College Romance
Getting Settled In
Previous ChapterNext ChapterToday marked the first day of my college career, and I couldn't have been any less prepared for it. I was in my room, scrambling to get everything packed up before lugging it all downstairs. I wasn't about to be late on the very first day, would kind of impression would I be making if I let that happen? But finally, after about nearly an hour, I managed to get everything packed up and ready to go. I picked up my bags and was about to head out of the door, when I remembered that I was about to forget the most important thing. Quickly racing to my bed, I pulled open my nightstand drawer and pulled it out. It was a ring that Tavi had made for me out of nylon and an acorn cap. Though it didn't look like much to everyone, it meant a lot to me.
I rushed downstairs with my bags in hand and was greeted by my mom and little brother at the front door, "Are we ready to go?"
Mom gave me a smile and put her hand on my shoulder, "We're not going with you. Because there wont be enough room in the car."
I began to get puzzled, "That's never been a problem before."
"Well, it is now," she grabbed my free hand and I felt something cold touching my skin.
I looked down at my hand and unclenched my fist. It was a slightly rusted car key that I had only seen once before. I looked back up at mom with awe, "Y-You mean..."
"Take good care of it Vinyl, your father would be so proud of you."
Tears began to roll down my face as I gave mom and Tex one last hug, "Thanks mom, I couldn't have asked for anything better. I love you."
"I love you too Vinyl. Now, you better get going before you're late."
I broke our hug and gave mom a bright smile, "I'll be home for Christmas."
With that, I hurried out the door and headed into the garage. I opened the door, and there it was, the car that my father had always wanted me to have. It was a 1967 Chevy Corvette with a red paint job and black trim. Tears welled up in my eyes again and I packed my things in the trunk. I climbed into the driver's seat and turned on the car. The engine purred just as good as I remember it. I pulled out of the garage and waved goodbye as I headed off for Canterlot University.
It was a short and very uneventful drive to campus, but it was a very exciting moment for me. I took a detour from the campus's main building in order to get my things up to my apartment at the Cloudsdale Complex. It was only about another five minute drive before I was there. I parked my car and looked at the building. It wasn't that tall, but it had the highest class feel to it. The entrance was freshly paved, the shrubbery was well kept, and the atmosphere was on high. I couldn't wait to see my new apartment.
I got out of my car and got my things out of the trunk. Before I could even make another move, there was already an apartment staff member at my side with a luggage cart.
"Thank you," I reached into my pocket and gave him a five before placing my things on the cart and pushing it into the lobby.
The things about the Cloudsdale apartment complex is, it's also a five start hotel. There were tons of people crowded into the lobby who were either checking in or checking out. The people at the front desk didn't seem to be phased by it in the least. They were quickly, and flawlessly filling out paper work, handling payments, and giving and taking room keys. I got my spot in line an was at the front in no time.
"Hello, welcome to Cloudsdale Apartments and Hotel. How may I help you?" asked the lady at the front desk.
"I'm here about an apartment."
"Name?"
"Vinyl Scratch."
She typed my name into the computer, "Ah yes, here you are. Your mother set you up with apartment number 283. Just fill out this form and you'll be off to your apartment."
I quickly filled in the form as accurately as I could and handed it back to the lady and she handed me my key, "Thank you, and enjoy your time with us."
I gave her a smile and quickly made my way to my room, though the crowd kind of slowed me down a bit. I got up to my room and noticed that the door was already opened.
This can't be right, I thought to myself. I should be the only one staying in this apartment. Unless mom sprang for the roommate package. I walked into the apartment and dropped my bags in shock. Sitting on the couch smiling at me was my upbeat, black haired, and warmhearted girlfriend.
"Hi. Surprised to see me?" her smile widened as she got off the couch and walked up to me.
"More than you might think. I didn't expect to see you here."
"I kind of expected it. My mom knew your foster mom from this college and they quickly became friends. Over the years they've been talking more and more. So when she heard that you were going to be going to Canterlot like I was. They kinda planned on getting us the same apartment."
My jaw hit the floor, "H-How in the...What?"
She giggled cutely, "Let's not let the details bother us. Besides, we need to hurry and get back to campus before we're late for freshman orientation."
"Do you want to take your car or mine."
"What kind of car do you have?"
"A '67 Corvette."
"Your car, definitely your car."
We rushed back downstairs and went out to my car.
"Mind if I take her for a spin Vinyl?"
"Sorry Tavi, but, my father left me this car. I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with someone else driving it."
"Fair enough, let's hurry."
We hopped in the car and drove off back towards campus, "So where is this orientation supposed to be at?"
"At the Canterlot Library in the east wing. Twilight is supposed hosting it."
"Twilight? Since when does she do anything other than study?"
"Well, being the librarian, she kinda has to set up the orientation."
"Since when did she get that job, last I heard she was working as a student assistant for Principal Celestia."
"Celestia was the one who swung the job for her."
"Oh. So, where is the library at?"
"Just take a left here and keep going straight, it'll be the last building on the right."
I followed Tavi's directions and we made it with only five minutes before the orientation started. Tavi showed me the way to the eastern wing and the campus's only auditorium. We managed to make it right on time, and took our seats in the back. The lights dimmed down and a single spotlight lit the stage.
