Author's Note
Stuck in a Greek airport for 8 hours and decided make a clop to pass the time. Sorry if my British slang comes out in this, if you need some help translating just assume everything you don't understand is a swear, your mostly right. (very tired will be mistakes be warned.)
The Story Part.
Morning.
The most evil creation of any universe, in all the dimensions spanning across all of time and space, through everything and nothing in the infinity of consciousness.
Let’s just say you’re not a morning person.
You roll over in your bed to escape the glaring sun, that burns rays of hatred into your eyes. Comfortable that you finally found a sanctuary for your weary form on the other side of bed, you sigh in content as the grips of sleep take you once more.
“Hey, get up its time for breakfast!”
You crack open a tired eye and stare at the origin of the noise coming from behind your bedroom door. You decide to do as you always do in this scenario, ignore it and hope it goes away… it never goes away.
The sounds of knocking grows louder and more aggressive, as the assailant talons pound harder.
“Hey dweeb, you gone deaf on me? breakfast, now!”
You moan audibly, it’s your only free day of the week you get as a veterinarian. Luckily for you, animals in Equestria seem to be courteous enough to take Sundays off as well; you think it’s because of their semi-conscious minds, its weird like that here in Equestria. You don’t complain though, it means you get to lay in for a change, except for when a certain someone comes knocking.
The knocking continues uninterrupted, as you fight the good fight. You throw the pillow over your head, doing all you can to drown out the noise.
“One last time, I know your awake in there get up or I’m comin’ in.”
Maybe it’s your mind trying to adjust to its rude awakening, but despite all logic and the knowledge that this won’t end well for you, you decide to tempt fate, as you make overly loud and obnoxious snoring noises.
The sound of frustrated growling ominously protrudes from behind the door, as you assume she hears you.
“Oh that’s it monkey man, now you’re gonna’ get it!” The voice yells viciously through the door.
You really wish you didn’t tell her your species was descended from apes; it only served to give her more ammo on you. You mentally berate yourself for that particular slip of the tongue, as you await the oncoming threat with bated breath; you assume the next course of action that she always takes, breaking down your door…
It doesn’t come.
Funny you think. It’s not like her to make threats like that and then not do anything?
You attempt to puzzle over the notion but the lust for more sleep overpowers any will to think coherently, as you snuggle back into the pillows.
Minutes pass as you try and fail to go back to sleep, unfortunately your brain is now fully alert and wired despite your body’s protests.
Why is it so quiet?
You puzzle over the notion. You haven’t had a peaceful Sunday morning in at least a year; in fact, you haven’t had a peaceful Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, hell any day in over a year. The thought troubles you deeply.
You try to reassure yourself, noting that she probably couldn’t break down the new bedroom door you just had installed. That door cost you allot of bits, as one could imagine, it was bloody hard to order and obtain a door able to withstand a griffon, specifically one for indoor use. Especially, when you had to order a custom griffon proof door without telling the proprietor, or your ‘roommate’ what the extra armoured barricade was specifically for.
Why one may ask?
Well let’s just say that because Ponyville is such a small town, word travels fast. This town has only ever been greeted by one griffon in its long lifespan, and let’s just say things apparently didn’t go well.
You mentally shrug; thinking was for anytime outside of bed. Content with the overly secure deadlocked door, you roll over forgetting that the sun has now mysteriously vanishes from your room. Eyes still closed, you enjoy the cool summer breeze as it blows across your face from the open window, lulling you back to sleep.
WINDOW!
You open your eyes and leap forward towards the open window, but it’s too late. All you see is a brown and white figure with a devilish smirk and a bucket of water.
Yep, typical bloody mornings.
As the icy cold water splashes your poor defenceless form. You’re a bit ashamed to admit it, but you scream like a little child and throw the covers off stumbling out of the bed.
“Jesus friggin’ Christ that’s cold!” you bellow out towards the laughing figure, who has toppled over onto your bed, holding her sides, and laughing hysterically at your flailing.
“Dude you should, haha, oh man, you should see the look on your face, what a nerd.” She cries out though the fits of her laughter.
You glare at her from across the room, hugging yourself with both arms and shivering.
“Damn it Gilda! was there really any need for that?! I swear sometimes I don’t know why I let you crash here! I could easily have you out on your feathery ass you know… Hello? are you even listening bird brain!?”
You’re expression changes to one of confusion as you look at the griffon who is suddenly frozen and slack beaked on your bed. Surprisingly in one of life’s great moments, a constant nibbling question is finally answered to you. Can griffons blush?
Answer, oh boy can they.
You spend a couple of seconds in silences, mussing over the griffons somewhat schizophrenic reaction. Slowly your follow the Griffons gaze down towards the catalyst of the situation, your very naked body. And, as if life wasn’t throwing you all its curve balls at once, you also notice that you are also going through a serious case of morning wood.
The silence in the room is deafening, Gilda’s reaction is beginning to concern you now. It’s been almost a minute without the she-griffon insulting you; you snap your fingers once or twice bringing Gilda back to her senses. She looks up at you with a very uneasy smile. “Hey KFC you ok?”
Surprisingly one of your little comebacks doesn’t get the obvious response you assume it would. Instead Gilda blushed even harder as she leaps backwards through the window, yelling something about being in her bunk. You don’t understand, must be a Griffon thing , you don’t bother thinking on it for too long, as the cool air reminds you that you’re now freezing all over, you shrug and walk towards the shower.
In the shower you have some time to think, oddly you think about life in general , something you don’t often do.
You begin to think about the family you once had and then you shrug, you couldn’t really give a toss in all honestly. Your dad was always a bit of a dick, and you always had somewhat of a distant relationship with your siblings. The only one you seem to miss is your mom, you hope she’s ok.
She probably is, she’s a tough girl you assure yourself. It’s been two years, life’s probably been hard but she’ll get on with her life you hope. However it’s still not easy without her, your mom was always something of a fall back in hard times, both emotional and otherwise, and now you have nothing but yourself. You try not to think about it, you have a whole new life to worry about.
Well that’s not fair, for the most part your new life’s pretty sweet, and you still get to take care of animals, hell! Even mystical and sometimes highly dangerous ones straight out of some old folk lore’s and fairy tale, not many people can boast that.
You also live in a fairly nice house, a bit cramped because of the size in comparison to you, but you can’t complain. Also the lack of any real meat and your hatred for cupcakes, means that you’re basically in the best shape of your life, whether you like it or not. And your friends with an adorable little yellow and pink mare who shares you passion for critters.
Yep life is pretty friggin’ sweet.
Ok now you’re exaggerating. Yeah you have a nice house but you mostly sick of it, it’s the only thing you see day in and day out, you try to go out and socialise but it’s hard. The pony’s all stare at you whenever you leave the house. You were never comfortable with crowds to begin with, so having a whole town stop and look at you, like some sort of zoo animal didn’t exactly help the old self esteem, or panic attacks.
Also there was that purple princess, who somehow got the lucky dip or something like that and became a different godly species of pony, she’s nice enough, but she won’t stop bugging you for questions about the world you grew up in.
Questions that admittedly you’re ashamed you don’t quite know anyway. I mean really can anyone really explain the entire workings, set up and manufacturing process of a fridge, without at least a little help from the web? If they can they obviously have too much free time, and your new life had little to none.
The other issue is that your job is pretty dangerous, all things considered, whilst Fluttershy who is effectively your boss even though she really isn’t comfortable when you remind her of that, handles all the smaller animals you always seem to get the bigger, meaner ones around the Everfree. You’ve got some pretty nasty scratches and bite marks, but thanks to a few magic darts e.g. pony equivalent of tranquilisers, and a blowpipe you don’t get many problems.
All that you would happily live with, if you could trade it for the worst problem, Her, the one who manipulates time and space to her own twisted comedy, the one who ruined sanity for you, and occasionally leaves baked goods around your house even when you know you didn’t let her in. Yes the one you simply refer to as ‘the pink devil.’ for your own mental safety you stay away from that one whenever you can.
One more problem comes to mind but you can’t quite place it...
“For the last time dweeb, breakfast! Man who knew apes likes water so much.”
Ah yes Gilda; Ok you wouldn’t say you disliked the walking anti-friend. Occasionally she could actually be a real blast to hang out with. Both of you get shit sometimes for being a different species, so you take it in turns to be an arse to the more outspoken pony’s in the community.
You say take it in turns but it’s always you who has to do the deed. Gilda never shows herself around town anymore, she didn’t really say why, but she did admit it had something to do with her best friend who as Gilda puts it ‘traded her for another pony’.
She never told you the full story but from what she did tell you it was pretty heart wrenching coming from the usually proud and out-spoken griffon and although you never like to judge based on only hearing one side of the story, if you ever meet that mare who hurt Gilda that badly, you were going to give her an earful that’s for sure.
You shake the water from your hair in a very dog like manor, as you reached for a towel, you're brain couldn’t help but keep going down memory lane, as you began your morning routine.
You and Gilda had been… well, good friends was perhaps not the right word, good acquaintances for some time now. Ever since you found her trapped under a tree, nearly one year after your arrival into this world.
The belligerent griffon had caused the tree to collapse, as she flung her incredibly sharp talons with reckless abandon across the canopy, again it was hard to get the full reason why, from the she-griffon, but you know it was on the same day her best friend dumped her, and it’s not hard to guess it was her way of venting her anger. Either way, she was hurt and in trouble and you knew you had to help, but boy she didn’t make it easy for you.
Throughout the whole encounter she was throwing all manner of curses at you, funny she was the only one that made relatively mundane words like Nerd and Dweeb etc. Seem genuinely hurtful, you had to admit you were impressed, lord knows what she could do with the type of swears you knew.
Her wing and leg where pretty badly damaged or in some places broken after you managed to convince her that you were here to help, she made you swear not to take her to a hospital she didn’t want anyone knowing she was here. (Seriously that mare really messes Gilda up) but you digress, you agreed you weren’t just going to leave here there. Luckily, being that she was basically a cross between a lion and an eagle and you were a zoo vet back in the day, you were pretty confident you could fix her up even if it was just a broken leg and wing.
After carrying her home and dressing her wounds properly, you were treated to a gentle thank you. Wait no you weren’t you where mocked, ridiculed and genuinely assaulted by the girl the whole time! No matter, it was all in the name of good, you thought she would be gone in a week or two anyway, and you could just live with your good deed as thanks.
That was one year ago.
You exit the shower and begin to rummage round your chest of drawers.
Throwing together a bland combination of jeans and one of your few non-stained shirts on, you pick up your white veterinarian coat out of habit and casually stroll down to the kitchen.
Before entering you get hit with an enticing aroma, it’s thick, smoky and lingers in the air hypnotically; you can’t help but begin salivating slightly as you wipe the drool on from the side of your mouth. Your curiosity is peaked now as you push open the door revealing a ‘cozy’ sized kitchen, with a wooden table that barely fits into the room. However your eyes are not so much looking at the kitchen that you got screwed over with, but at the beautiful sight of cooked fish.
“W-what, how, where?” you stutter in amazement.
Ah fish, the steak of the sea, god you haven’t had fish in a while! But you didn’t buy any? You can’t, you can only catch fish in Equestria and you hate fishing, so who?
“It’s called fish dweeb.” The overly cocky voice calls behind you as you turn towards your imposed roommate.
“How did you get fish? And why for breakfast, not that I’m complaining” you quickly add.
“Duh I’m a griffon it’s what we do, I’m a natural fisher, and anyway what’s wrong with fish for breakfast?” She says suspiciously squinting her eyes.
“Nothing, nothing come on let’s just eat.”
You both sit down and dig in, the fish tastes as good as it smells and the freshness of it as it almost melts in your mouth is intoxicating, back on earth this would be pretty high end stuff.
Maybe I can convince Gilda to get me fish for a rent payment. Not that you could convince her to pay rent in general.
Silence reigns, as you both begin to enjoy the meal. However you keep noticing Gilda fidgeting and looking off to the side, you give her a confused look as you try and figure out what’s gotten into the girl, something looks off about her, maybe even nervous?
Again her eyes dart towards the kitchen counter, you want to ask what’s up, but you keep getting distracted by the first real meat you’ve had in a long time, as you rip into a another chunk of the enticing fish. You let a little moan of satisfaction escape from your lips, which snap’s Gilda out of her trance.
“Ha thought you’d like It.” she states smugly.
You smile back at her. “Oh so you do think about me.” You prop your elbows onto the table and lean against your fists fluttering your eyes mockingly at her “I’m touched Gilda.”
Your little roast seems to surprise Gilda more than you expected as she chokes on a bit of the fish hitting her chest with a closed fist and coughing as she recovers from your accusation, you notice a small blush on her cheeks blushing or trying to catch her.
“*Cough* Yeah *Cough* right, only time I think about you is when I remember just how lucky you must feel to have such an awesome griffon hang out with an animal caring nerd like yourself.”
You roll your eyes but crack a genuine smile, which she returns as you lift another piece of fish into your mouth.
Again though you’re confused by the almost volatile reaction that light accusation had, she sounds normal but she still seems jittery, and continues to look towards the corner whenever you focus on your food.
Most wouldn’t notice the subtle body differences, but you can easily tell the Griffons nervous. She’ll tell me when she’s ready, you consider. Taking her pride into account as you start some small talk hoping to at the very least distract her from whatever’s plaguing her mind.
“So what’s your plan for today” you say between chews.
She gives you her typical response as she shrugs her shoulders, and brushing her, I guess you could call it a fringe, with an idol talon. “I don’t know; figure I’d see where the day takes me. Maybe head out to Cloudsdale since its still early, found somepony who’s willing to sell me some Canterlot Raider tickets for this weekend.”
The Canterlot Raiders were part of a Hoofball team in Equestria. Essentially it was American football which you to be honest where never that into, however American football never included magic and literal flying tackles, which you get defiantly get a good kick out of seeing.
The game can even get pretty rough and dangerous from time to time, obviously Gilda loves it, and honestly as much as you like it too, you mostly go to see Gilda’s reactions its oddly cute seeing the griffon so passionate for a change.
“Any chance of a spare ticket floating around?” you ask, you know she wouldn’t go on her own, but you also know she’s too proud to ask you to tag along, so being the good gentleman that you are you throw the metaphorical life raft.
Once again you’re rewarded with a genuine smile that graces the she griffon’s beak. “Well I guess I could have a look, I mean it is the semi-finals, buuut I think I can snag one if you’re that desperate to go with me.”
You laugh, “Of course.” You say slightly sarcastically, shaking your head as you both set off finishing your meal all the while you keep an eye on the griffon, who is now staring at both you and the counter when she believes you’re distracted keeping a worried gaze on her when you can.
You slouch back in bliss, as you bring a cup of coffee lazily towards your face, for a morning it’s actually shaping up to be a pretty good for a change.
“Well Gilda I got to say that was amazing, I could kiss you right now.” You smile at the griffon who is sitting across from you gazing at her talons in a nonchalant way. However you noticed a small blush hit her cheeks again.
“Eh, it was easy, I accidently caught more than I wanted to anyway, and I knew your lazy flank would just make burnt toast again, like you do every day.” She stated mockingly, lying back and looking at you with a playful smirk on her beak.
You roll your eyes. “Bloody hell, Feathers, would it kill you to take a compliment for once.”
“Pah, I don’t need some pony blowing my trumpet for me; I’m good enough to do that myself.”
“Gilda I don’t think that’s what that saying is supposed to mean.”
Gilda just waves a dismissive talon at you as she begins to check a wing casually for preening it’s something you’ve seen thousands of times, it looks kind of fun in all honesty, but Gilda never lets you try, she kinda’ funny that way but you understand, you wouldn’t really want someone touching your hair just because it looked like fun right?
As you look around the room something catches your eye it’s a feather, and next to it is a note which says it for you on the side of the counter.
How did I only notice that now?
“Hey Gilda there a feather in the middle of the counter over there, it’s a big one, is that one of yours?” you say trying to remember you knowledge of feathers of bird of prey.
Gilda’s face suddenly goes a bright red.
“No don’t!” she attempts to yell, but your already over there.
She turns her head away for a second it looks like she trying to hide behind her wing, honestly it’s pretty adorable actually, something you never thought you’d think of, when concerning the Griffon.
You hold it by the tip and examine it for a moment ignoring the note next to it.
“Yeah is that, I mean do you-“she trails off, in one of the weirdest completely off character moment you think you’ve ever seen in her.
You wait for a response that doesn’t come, slowly you consider the notion that maybe she left it by accident, it might actually be a bit embarrassing for the griffon, maybe it’s a faux pas, like having someone see your dirty underwear or some sort of griffon equivalent. Either way you think it’s best to be a good friend and take care of it for her.
“Don’t worry I’ll take it.”
The griffons face lights up in shock and excitement, something you find very odd indeed.
“Y-you will?!”
You stare at her in confusion, for a second. “yeah… sure, it’s no problem” you say taking the feather and walking towards the bin at the side of the room, you open the bin lid and toss the feather inside, rubbing your hands together as you turn back to towards the table.
“See all taken care of, honestly I don’t-“
The griffon was giving you the most shocked look you’d ever seen, her beak was completely open and eyes where as wide as saucers, she wasn’t moving an inch. You stay like that for a few seconds before your curiosity gets the better of you.
“Gilda, Gilda you ok there?” you ask with concern.
The griffon turns to face away from you her wings cover her face; you swear you can hear some sniffling and whimpering behind them.
What did I do? You think.
“Y-you could have just said no.” Came her small cracking voice.
Is she crying?
“What? what’s wrong, what did I do.” you ask you really don’t know what’s going on anymore, Gilda looks beyond hurt and you’re feeling a mixture of shock and guilt.
Like a flash the griffon turns to you with fire in her eyes as bright as a bonfire, she slams her talons onto the table you can hear it cracking and groaning from the force, as the claws dig in and the drops of tears fall from her eyes.
“You know what, Buck you, Asshole! How could you do that, just throw it away like it was nothing, you're just like her, and you know what, I’m not taking it anymore.”
You flinch as you expect to be torn asunder, but it doesn’t come instead you see the griffon dash over to the door, and fling it open, before turning back at you her face the saddest thing you’ve ever seen.
“I don’t ever want to see you again.” She screams, slamming the door and leaving you truly alone for the first time in a long while.
You still trying to wrap your head around what just happened, you don’t leave the kitchen for some time after whatever that was that just transpired.
The girl just snapped and went full crazy on me, you think.
Nah that’s too easy to just excuse her actions on insanity, she may be a bit irrational when she’s mad but Gilda’s got a pretty solid grip on reality, especially compared to some of the others you know in this town.
You can’t help but feel you really messed up, but what triggered it, was it the feather? You walk over towards the bin and remove the large brown quill.
It does look pretty you think as you examine, hmm it smells like her to…
Did you just think that?
Well it’s over now, whatever you did you’ve never seen her that pissed before, and then the guilt hits you, good lord she cried you hold your hands over you face and groan loudly.
Man I suck! you think as you’re pretty sure that’s, the first time that, that griffon has ever cried in her life.
You lay the feather gently down on the table with a sigh, as you hear a loud rapping at the door you consider letting it go on, but you know that it would be quicker just to see who it was, you decide to leave your thoughts for later as you walk towards the front door.
After a moment you remove the latch and open the door, revealing a yellow and pink little Pegasus you know as Fluttershy.
“Hello Fluttershy, I’m glad you took my advice about knocking at hearing level.” You almost robotically announce, deciding to go with the standard name instead of boss, which you know gets a funny reaction out of the mare, for obvious reasons, you’re not really in a joking mood right now.
The mare looks down shyly blushing. “Well actually I was here for ten minutes trying to get your attention; in the end Angel did it for me.” She mumbles, moving her large mane and revealing a very annoyed looking bunny with both paws folded, tapping its foot impatiently.
God, Angel sucks.
It’s a close second on the very small list of animals you hate, well it’s not really even a list, it only has Angel bunny and chimpanzees, creepy bastards that they are, the bunny is still pretty close to the top.
“I’m sorry I can’t really come hang out now, I have something I need to do Fluttershy, it’s kind of personal.”
“Oh sorry I don’t mean to be rude, but that’s not why I’m here, I’m really sorry to ask, but it’s an emergency.” she begins pawing at the ground again, before she looks up at you with more determination.
Immediately you know it’s about animals. Fluttershy would have very quickly given up asking if it wasn’t something to do with the safety of the animals of Equestria.
“C'mon it’s my one break in two weeks, can’t the animals wait a day...can’t you do it?”
“I’m really, really sorry, it’s just that it’s about the phoenix family inside of the Everfree, their little chick went missing a day ago, I just found her this morning, but the poor little one's broken its wing. I need your help to fix her and bring her back to her parents. I would do it myself but I have to go to Canterlot in thirty minutes to meet the princesses about that the wildlife reserve proposal with Twilight, and I won’t be back till tomorrow morning.”
Your eyes go up in surprise, did she just say phoenix!?
You’ve always loved birds they were so majestic and amazing, and the phoenix was the most badass and most amazing of them all. You only got a chance to see one once back in Canterlot, but it was enough to make you light the fire of your new obsession, you pretty much read everything there is to know about them. Even the weird stuff like a book on mating rituals you’re not sure why you bought. Hey it’s not creepy, you’re a vet it might be useful one day!
You stare past Fluttershy and into the basket concealed behind her, you’re a bit ashamed to admit, for the second time to day you squeal like a child as your mind temporally forces the awful feeling of moments ago in favour of crossing off an item from your bucket list.
“Shy, don't tell me there’s a baby Phoenix in the basket.” you yell excitedly, bringing two fists up towards your mouth in anticipation.
Fluttershy giggles at your reaction, before turning around and picking the basket up and handing it to you in one soft motion.
“I found her near my cottage next to the west entrance of the Everfree, she was all scared and alone I just had to help.”
You stare at the most adorable, and second most tragic sight you’ve seen today, a little tiny yellow and crimson Phoenix with a broken wing, it was trying to flatten it against its side but its wing was snapped out and unresponsive as it twitched weakly. The poor thing was cheeping quietly at you, in such a heart wrenching way. It was obviously looking for its mother, based on the way it kept looking around, despite its fatigued form.
“She’s so adorable; leave it to me, Flutters, I’ll fix this sweetie up in a second.”
You pick up the chick very carefully, cupping her in your hands as you turn back inside the house to your work room, where you practice your profession. The chick leans into your thumb nuzzling against it for warmth making you ‘aw’ at its over whelming cuteness.
“Can I keep it” you say turning to Fluttershy who follows you inside the house you give her your best pout, sticking your lower lip out and going in for the kill with practiced and honed puppy dog eyes.
Fluttershy giggles again at your response, but shakes her head. “Sorry, as much as I’d like to say yes, its parents probably miss their child terribly.”
You sigh and frown in response, not really meaning it.“Yeah you’re probably right, C'mon little buddy time to patch you up” you says opening the door to your work room.
Before she leaves, Fluttershy explains to you where she found the baby chick, you’re pretty sure you know the area well enough to get to its nesting place, and you certain based on your knowledge of phoenixes that you can find its real parents around the area.
It’s now late in the evening but the chick is for the most part good as new. It would usually be only a one maybe two hour job max, but you find the chick has a small fever from the wound which requires you to give it medication to put it to sleep whilst it fights the fever.
Also because of the age of the chick, and your over protective tendency’s to ensure it feels as little discomfort as possible, you have to be extra slow in healing the phoenix. It also serves as a distraction from your guilt ridden mind.
You wipe your brow as you lay the medical tools down and stare at the tiny thing. She’s sleeping soundly on the work table, cuddled up to some of the cloth you use to keep it clean, you very carefully pick up the cloth with the chick on it, and place it into the basket Fluttershy provided.
Once there, you wrap the basket in your embrace, and begin your journey into the Everfree, closing and locking your door as you walk towards the forest.
It’s getting dark by the time you reach a decent distance inside, but thankfully your boss explained that the chick followed the path or so it told her, so you don’t have to venture to far out of your comfort zone. You have Gilda’s feather, tucked away in your veterinarian coat on the inside pocket next to some sleeping darts you brought just in case. For some reason the feather makes you feel safer, and it’s an idea reminder to make sure you find the griffon after all this is done.
As you walk you start to think back to the she-griffon, you ask yourself frivolously why she acted so strangely, she stated to cry you grill into yourself again, man you feel like such an ass right now, but you don’t know why. It’s like you got blamed for a crime you didn’t commit, you grunt in frustration but you mind won’t stop questioning and blaming you.
I just hope she’s ok.
Sighing deeply, the thought takes you back somewhat. You never really grasped how much you care about her until now, but with her short absence in your life comes a deep clenching feeling of emptiness.
You may have had your rough patches with the she griffon, hell, ever day she finds a new way to rub you wrong. But she’s the closet thing you’ve had to normality in this world, all things considered of course, she never treats you differently, like other pony’s did, it’s like as far as she’s concerned your pretty much a griffon same as her, two fellow outsides. Though that doesn’t stop her calling you a monkey every so often, but you know she never really meant it in a hateful way.
When you call her feather brain though, it does make her lash out sometimes, it's all for fun and it usually ends up with you two wrestling inside the house. It was always a warm feeling seeing her smile, you don’t know particularly why you feel that way, but you never want to see her without one.
The sun is setting as you arrive at the place where Fluttershy stated she found the phoenix; you really don’t like being out this late in the forest. But you know the chick's parents are probably worried sick, and you would hate to have to leave them waiting any longer away from their bundle of joy. You look down at it once more inside of its basket with a tiny blanket covering most of its body, its breath is slow and calm as it nestles into the warm of the cotton interior something that makes your heart soar.
You look around at the area for a while looking for any tell-tale signs of the baby’s parents. You’ve spent twenty minutes searching the same supposed area you believe they would nest ,and you’ve very nearly about to call it a day, before it gets too dark to see.
Suddenly you hear a screeching sound come from the not too distant canopy. You recognise that call anywhere, as you adjust your ears towards the direction, trying to decide exactly where it’s coming from. The loud screeching chimes again, and as it does so the small bundle of feathers inside you basket begins to stir and naturally responds to the call, something you are amazed at as you’re sure that the chick should still be pretty knocked out all things considered.
You walk towards the sound, and against you better judgment you begin to leave the path and into the true depths of the forest. Again the screeching sounds of the older phoenix’s become louder and louder as you move closer to them.
The bushes and branches are getting thicker and thorny around you, and you have to use some cleaver manoeuvring and a few choice curse words to get by. But you eventually make it through to a small clearing, with only one a few scrapes and cuts on your arms.
You scan the blackened sky looking for some sort of tell tale signs of the mythological birds parents, or at least a nest, suddenly the ‘sign’ flies towards you face screeching loudly. You barely have a second to duck just before the sharp talons connect with the side of your face as you duck. It’s not deep but its smarts like hell, you turn in the direction it zoomed past, as you see it shoot up into the air presumably for another attack.
It’s too dark to make out but based on its size it’s a fairly large bird, and based on the claw marks dangerous too. In a split second decision you decide to go with you gut feeling that hopefully it’s the mother or father. You lift the basket up from the ground whilst ripping the cloth from the top of it off revealing the small baby phoenix.
“Wait wait don’t attack, I’m just returning your child!” You yell stretching out the basket and pointing the child out to the large shadow, that’s coming in for a second attack.
Sweat drips down your brow as you wince and turn your head away from the figure that is still bolting towards you with unmatched speed, waiting for the inevitable.
However after a few moments you realise your still standing arms stretched not daring to look ahead, it’s still tense as hell and your adrenaline is at full speed around your body, but you can’t help feel like a bit of a prat standing as you are. You decide to risk a glance, as you feel some large weight perched on your arm.
As you peer around you see the bird that was just aiming for you look down into the basket, it ‘kaws’ in surprise as it notices its child. The Phoenix immediately begins to lean down and nuzzle the child which it seems more than happy to return as the effects of the medicine begin to wear off.
You breathe a sigh of relief that your hunch was correct, but still don’t relax you pose, no matter how much the awkward position is starting to hurt. Hey just because you’re pretty fit now, doesn’t mean you’re an athlete ok.
The phoenix gives you a suspicious look but stops when the little baby cheeps at it. The bird looks at you one last time, before picking up the child by the scruff of its neck and launching off your arm.
You let go of a breath you didn’t know you were holding, and relax your body for a second, letting the basket fall, not only where you just holding two of the most amazing animals in this world, but one of them just tried to kill you all in the space of a few seconds it’s something that you need a moment for.
You walk over towards a tree and lean against it with an outstretched arm not long after you let the thoughts go through your head and calm down, another large creature lands on your shoulder with a rustle of its feather, you look up slowly at your arm noticing that another phoenix is using it as a perch.
This one is a different phoenix small but no less dangerous especially as you notice the purple colouring on its wings and deduce that it’s the mother of the chick.
I don’t care if it’s come to finish the job this is too cool. You think, as you look up into its eyes not breaking contact once.
Slowly the phoenix stretches a wing in front of its body, It plucks a single feather from the near end of its span; it’s a beautiful crimson and purple primary feather that glistens in the moonlight. It leans forward with the feather held in its beak. You almost robotically stretch out a shaky hand and very slowly pluck it from her mouth with your thumb and finger.
The bird lifts its head back up and nods at you, one last time before taking off. You are left speechless as you look down at the feather and spin it slowly between your fingers and thumb. You manage to whisper out the word “awesome.”
You think back to nine hundred page long book on ‘The gesture of phoenixes’ (ok so your obsession is a bit weird) The symbolic gesture of the feather as you remember it was as important a gesture as receiving a wedding ring. It had a number of different meaning though, in this case it most likely meant that they where forever grateful to you, and that you where essentially one of the family, something that makes you squeal in delight about as the realisation that you might get to study them is not lost on your mind.
Of course, the most common gesture for many flying creatures was as a gesture for some kind of lifelong partnership, much like an engagement ring but more personal.
Either way it’s something you will be forever grateful for, as you slot the feather into your inner vet coat pocket oddly feeling another similar item brush against your finger you raise an eyebrow for a moment before remembering.

You smack your head back onto the tree, as an overwhelming wave of guilt, and a sense of your own stupidity hits you and hits you hard, you feel ashamed of yourself, you know it’s not truly your fault, you didn’t do it out of any kind of malice. But Gilda didn’t know that, you effectively threw an engagement ring, or something like that in the bin, right in front of the person proposing.
“Man I really am scum.” You curse at yourself shaking your head in total disbelief.
You slowly get back up onto your shaky feet, silently stating with determination that whatever it takes, you were going to find her and make everything right. She was a friend. No she was more than that she was the only stable anchor in your mess of a life, and you’ll be damned if you loss her over some stupid misunderstanding.
You confidently storm out of the opening and make your way back to the path, wherever that was.
Five minutes later.
You’re lost…shit.
It’s probably would have been easier if you brought a torch, but you where so determined to see the baby phoenix home, that you negated everything else important to your own survival, a realisation that only becomes more apparent when you hear your stomach groan and whine, reminding you that you also haven’t eaten since breakfast.
Its dark now, much darker than before, the moon still shines through the trees, but it’s a cloudy night, or at least it is in the Everfree with its untamed weather.
You starting to think that maybe it’s best to find a solid tree to sleep in, or on, when a rustling noise comes from behind you, followed by a deep growling sound that slowly rises in volume. You turn to find the bushes behind you moving and thrashing around, as two more growling sounds join in a choir of terror.
You gulp audibly as you body begins to freeze up, you’ve heard that sound before from afar, one of the many risks with being an exotic vet is that most of the exotic animals in the Everfree are beyond hostile and deadly.
The three entities exit the bushes slowly confirming your fears.
Timber wolves.
These magical tree canines are at least you size, and each one of them are natural killing machines. It’s ironic, given their lack of any digestive track that they only ever eat meat, an irony that’s not lost on you being that you are now on the menu.
You begin to slowly back away, flicking you eyes between the three beasts, as they stalk their way around you. You make sure to keep facing them at all times, you know breaking eye contact from any of them could be seen as an opportunity for the wooden monsters.
You keep backing away as slowly as you can until your back hits a large tree trunk. You feel around the sides instinctively it’s a big tree and there’s almost no way to go around it without moving towards one of the creatures as they circle their prey.
It’s funny out of all of the ways you could possibly have predicted your end, eaten by tree wolves in a land of monsters and talking ponies was not how you thought you’d go. Something more along the lines of drunken dare gone horribly wrong, or hopefully a sex fueled heart attack where more along the lines of how you hoped you would die.
However beggars can’t be choosers, and right now your begging for any kind of miracle you can. But it doesn’t seem likely, as the largest of the pack hounds makes its way towards you, its body in a constant pouncing stance.
You entertain the notion briefly of using the tranquilisers you packed, but quickly think against it. Even if by some miracle the sleeping chemical would work against a creature with no flesh or blood, you would still be immediately jumped on both sides, by the other two before you could even think about reloading.
Another thought comes to mind as you fumble with a dart inside of you pocket, still never breaking eye contact with the three. Use the dart on yourself, it would be a bit of coward’s way out but if it’s a quick painless sleep, or ripped apart by Timberwolves in the middle of nowhere, you pretty sure you know which one you’re going to take.
As the wolf begins to make its killing leap your thoughts go back to Gilda.

You slowly open both eyes and almost wish you hadn’t, you’re at least a hundred feet above the forest if not more the air sobers you up immediately as your body begins to panic you hear a grunted and strained voice yell at you.
“Don’t, struggle, Dweeb!” it growls at you

“Gilda?!” you shout in amazement.

After a few moments you can see that even with her enormous griffon strength, she’s beginning to waver, and soon you’re steadily falling down towards the ground. You can see the edge of the forest, it looks familiar to you but in the darkness you can’t make out any discernable landmarks.
The decent is become more haggard and sloppy as she begins to tire out, you want to do something but without wings you can only offer moral support. Your about to speak up when the tip of a tree catches your foot, causing both of you to loss all balance. Gilda begins to walk away you panic as you try to rack you brain for anything to say to her.

You stop yourself when you notice what Gilda was walking towards, she lifts the long brown feather into her talons then looks at you. Immediately you see the beginnings of tears in her eyes matched with a confused expression patched to her face.

You sit up on you knees and look into the Griffons eyes to show your certainty thankfully she still seems to be listening to you which is a small blessing.
“Gilda I know you have every right to simply walk away, I won’t blame you but hear me out. If… If I'm correct in assuming that feather means what I think it means, then yes of course I feel the same way, you've been one of the only god-damn stable thing I've cared about since I came here I cant express how much I owe you. But Ah hell I don't know I'm not good at this sort of thing but the more I think about it the more that I... It feels like everything on this planet has simply stopped, nothing moves or makes a sound, as the two of you simply look at each other; you start to get worried as you watch her put the feather gently down on the ground.

“I thought I’d lost you, you stupid, stupid loser.” She whimpers in-between sobs, as you wrap an arm around the griffon trying to comfort her as best as you can with reassuring sounds. She leans further into your shoulder as she lets all her tears out onto your body.
You can’t help but notice just how soft her feathers and fur are as you stroke her gently. After a minute or two the griffon finally calms down, enough to let you lift her head up with hands you look into those perching amber eyes and think about what to say.
“I’m sorry for what I did, believe me I never meant to hurt you Gilda, and don’t worry as far as I can help it you’ll never lose me, I’ll always be there for you."
She whimpers into you a bit more slowly, catching her breath as she strengthens her hug you want to find more words to say however right now words feel cheap. So you do the only thing that feels right in this moment.

Gilda’s eyes shoot up in shock for a moment, but slowly close them as she leans into the embrace.
