3: "Miss Vinyl?"

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Vinyl was at her desk the next day of the fair. She was waiting for any-pony else who might come to her desk. Then a familiar-looking stallion walked up to the desk.

"Hey there," he said. "I was here yesterday. And I wanted to sign up. For a soldier."

"Okay," Vinyl replied. "Let me get the application." Vinyl went rummaging under desk before finding her stash of soldier applications.

"Okay, here you are, sir."

"Thanks," replied the stallion, and started to fill out the application.

A few minutes later, a small group of mares and stallions walked up to the desk and started asking questions. Vinyl answered them all to the best of her abilities, and before she knew it, she was talking to a group of 4 mares and 6 stallions. After a little while of consulting in their minds, all but 2 of the ponies signed up. After a while, a few more mares came to the desk, and some stallions, all throughout the day. Vinyl went and looked at her supply of applications and realized she was starting to see a dent in the tons of applications she made. This made her happy.

After a while, a familiar black pegasus flew up to the table. "Hello, Green-Fire," Vinyl said when she saw the pegasus.

"Hello, ma'am," she replied. "Do you mind if I could stay at your desk for this day?"

"I thought you had your own stand selling, what was it,... food?"

"I do. I mean did. Fair officials asked me to close down my stand."

"Why? What did you do?"

"I don't know. I think they said something about a health-code violation, but I read the health stuff before I even set up my stand. But it doesn't surprise me either way. Not too many ponies in this world like me... Only five I can think of."

"Who?"

"My mom, my brother, my husband, my little filly, and you."

"Well, those people who don't like you are dumb. I don't know how any-pony could dislike a sweet pegasus like you"

"Oh. Well -uh- thank you ma'am," Green-Fire said in her usual timid voice, which Vinyl found some-what charming.

"Hey Green-Fire?"

"Yeah, ma'am?"

Vinyl looked down at Green-Fire and said, "We are going to have a lasting friend-ship... I can tell."

"Oh. Well I -uh- hope so, ma'am."

"Well Green-Fire, The fair is closing down, now. Are you going home?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Are you going to come on down to my table again, tomorrow?"

"Sure."

"Great, well I'll see you then."

"Yep. You too, ma'am."

About 6 months after the fair, Vinyl was woken up by a knock on the door of the apartment she was renting. She was in apartment 34. She went rolled out of bed and opened the door to see a vaguely familiar stallion in the doorway.

"Miss Vinyl?", he said.

"That's me," Vinyl replied.

"I'm the manager of the Colt Construction Company. I just needed to tell you that the utterly huge build you asked for is now complete."

"Perfect! Thank you so much!"

"Your welcome, Miss Vinyl," the manager said, and walked out of the door.

"Now to start writing letters to all of the applicants..," vinyl said as she levitated a quill and paper.

The next week Vinyl Greeted all of her applicants in the large field of her base.

"Troops," She said to the 1598 ponies in the field. "I'm going to run an evaluation to see if you all are ready for the life of service. Now, all of you, split into 3 lines as even as possible. I'll let you figure it out. You should all be smart enough."

After a few minutes of shuffling around, Vinyl said to the troops, "Okay, this line here, you are doing push-ups. This line, you are doing sit-ups. And this line here, you are doing the mile run. If you run one time around the big field you are in,  that is one mile. Start here, and run around it once. Each of you received a tag when you came in? If not, raise your hoof. No-pony? Great. Now when you all are done with your time, there are 5 computers, walk over to them and type in your score. For those doing the mile-run, we have a sensor that will automatically log in your running time. When you all are done with your exercises, just go and do the next exercise, you don't need to wait for that group to be done, just do it. I will shout out the name of those who did not make it tomorrow at noon. Is that understood?"

"YES MA'AM!"

"Hmmmm... We'll need to work on that. Now, GO!"

Vinyl turned around to see Green-Fire right behind her with all of her bags packed and ready to move in.

"I'm here, ma'am," She said.

"Wonderful! My place is the building right over there. Open the door to enter and my place is the door on the very end of the hall."

"Thank you, ma'am."
