Colgate's Practice

The sun just rose above the horizon on a calm Saturday morning in Ponyville. Colgate got up and was wiping the sleep out of her eyes. Normally Saturday's are a rather uneventful day for her but this week it was different as her little sister Lyra was graduating from the Canterlot Vocational Academy with a dental hygienist certificate. Colgate was happy because she knew that her sister would do a far better job than her previous one did.

Colgate looks at the clock and shouts, "Damn it Colgate, you overslept! No time for breakfast today, I must get to Canterlot at once!"

Colgate quickly raced out the door and got to the train station just a minute before the train to Canterlot was leaving. While she was upset about not having any breakfast, she still had a beaming smile on her face. Sitting opposite from her in the car was Dr. Hooves, who also had a beaming smile on his face. Colgate saw this and asked, "Doctor, what has you in such a good mood?"

The doctor replied, "My little sister is graduating from the Canterlot Vocational Academy with a certificate in nursing. Now I will have a competent nurse." He paused for a minute and asked, "So what has you in such a good mood?"

Colgate replied, "Pretty much the same reason as you, except my little sister earned her dental hygienist certificate. She will be so much better than the one I had to fire on Friday."

Dr. Hooves asked, "You're talking about Lemon Hearts I take it? What did she do to get fired?"

Colgate replied, "She smacked Pipsqueak when he wouldn't open his mouth so she could clean his teeth. Luckily his parents didn't press charges."

The doctor smiled and they continued to talk about how things had been going in their practices and before they knew it, they had arrived in Canterlot. Colgate hurried over to the academy where she was greeted by Lyra in her cap and gown. Colgate hugged her little sister and said, "Lyra, I'm so proud of you! You remind me so much of myself!"

Lyra replied, "Well sis, I have always looked up to you as a role model." She paused and asked, "Guess what?"

Colgate replied, "What?"

Lyra had a beaming smile on her face and replied, "I'm graduating at the top of my class! The president of the academy is so proud of me!"

Colgate was ecstatic when she heard this. She replied, "I'm even prouder of you! I know you'll make the perfect........"

Celestia walked up to the two and said, "Lyra, you better get ready for the ceremony. You will be walking up to receive your certificate first."

Lyra nodded and said good bye to her sister. Celestia smiled and asked, "So how is my favorite dentist doing?"

Colgate replied, "I am doing wonderful! Seeing my baby sister receiving her certificate makes me very happy."

Celestia asked, "I take it you're going to hire her on the spot once she goes home with you?"

Colgate replied, "Yep, who better to have work with me than my sister. Her and I are a lot alike, we put a lot of value into hard work and neither one of us have ever had a thing handed to us."

Celestia knew that Colgate was knocking Twilight becoming a princess with the 'never having had anything handed to them' statement but didn't say anything. Colgate continued, "So your Majesty, how are your teeth? Having any problems with them?"

Celestia had quit brushing and began to eat more sweets than ever. She knew Colgate would be very angry if she found out so she decided to lie. She replied, "Nope, none at all. I know I have told you this many times but again thank you for learning that pain free root canal spell but I am going to thank you again, Thank you so much."

Colgate said, "Anytime princess." She looked towards the courtyard where Lyra's ceremony would be held and continued, "Well I better get going your Majesty, I want to get a front row seat for this."

Celestia smiled and replied, "I know you do. You have a good one."

Colgate headed out to the courtyard and got a seat up in the front row, right next to the aisle where her sister would be walking. In fifteen minutes the ceremony began. The band began to play as the graduates walked up on the makeshift stage that had been set up. Colgate shed a few tears of happiness as she saw her sister receive her certificate. It was a relatively short ceremony given that it was not a fancy university graduation. Within twenty minutes the ceremony was over and Colgate and Lyra were headed to the Canterlot Cafe.

Colgate looked over at Lyra and asked, "So Lyra, do you have a job lined up yet?"

Lyra replied, "No I don't. My adviser here at the academy was talking to Dr. White Tooth in Fillydelphia but I have heard that he is a horrible boss to work under."

Colgate said, "He is a total asshole Lyra. He is the bastard I had to work under after graduating from the dental academy in Manehattan." She paused for a minute and continued, "Lyra, since you don't have a job lined up yet what would you think about working for me?"

Lyra was giddy after hearing this question. She excitedly asked, "You want me to work for you?"

Colgate smiled and replied, "Yes Lyra, I want you to work for me!"

Lyra hugged her sister and said, "Of course I'll work for you. Finally, I'll get to be with my sister again, life will be so wonderful!"

Colgate said, "Lyra, you know I'm not going to relax the rules for you since you are my sister don't you? Yes we will get along more and be closer but you will still have to follow all the health code regulations that everypony else does."

Lyra replied, "I know big sis. I'm just so happy I get to work for you."

Soon the late afternoon had arrived and the two were waiting at the train station to head home. On the way home they sat across from Doctor Hooves and his younger sister, Twinkleshine. Colgate looked over and asked, "So doctor, will Twinkleshine be working as your nurse?"

Before the doctor could say anything Twinkleshine interrupted, "Yes, I'll be working as my brother's nurse. I am so happy that I can work for him. I have always looked up to him as a role model."

Lyra added, "I am so happy I can work for my sister too. She has always been my role model and hero."

The two elder siblings smiled and realized that things were going to be perfectly fine. Before they knew it the train had arrived back in Ponyville and they headed their separate ways. Once they got home Lyra asked, "Colgate, do I still have my old room or did you turn it into a guest room?"

Colgate replied, "I haven't touched a thing in there. It is still the same as it was before."

Lyra ran into her room and plopped down on her old bed. It was just as comfortable as she remembered it being the night before she left to go to the academy. That night after her and her sister had a good filling supper. When she went to bed she had the best night's sleep she had in ages, probably because she had no more exams or papers to worry about and she was happy that she was able to get a job so easily. Little did she know that things in her sister's practice would take a strange and very unexpected twist.
