Colgate's Practice

A Fresh Start

Previous Chapter

The time it took for Colgate's house and practice to be rebuilt seemed to take forever to her. Everyday she, along with every other pony who lost their homes and businesses would head over to the construction site to check the progress of the construction. She bumped into Mr. Breezy and said, "Oh hi Mr. Breezy. I see you're over here checking on the progress too."

Mr. Breezy replied, "Yeah and it seems to be taking so long. I don't know how much longer I can stand to stay at the inn. Yeah the gas company is paying for my stay but still, I want a real home to live in!"

Colgate laughed, "Yeah I hear you there! Good thing those motel rooms have kitchenettes in them, I don't think I could afford to eat out three times a day, every day!"

The two engaged in some minor chit chat as they headed back to the inn. While they were frustrated that things weren't moving along as quickly as they liked, they knew things would be done eventually. Finally though, just a couple weeks before the weather was going to turn cold, all the construction was completed. Colgate first headed to her house and was pleased with what she saw but what she was really excited about was checking out her new office.

When she headed in she was ecstatic, for the most part it was designed exactly like her old one, except that there was no basement in this one. When she noticed this she said to herself, "Oh thank goodness, I don't think I could stand to ever go into a basement here again."

Colgate realized that she was going to need new equipment and new furniture for both her practice and her home. It took her a few days to get all of that taken care of and then she realized she needed one more thing, new employees. On the first Saturday in December she headed up to the vocational academy in Canterlot to attend their graduation. She ran into Luna and said, "Oh hi your Majesty, how is everything going?"

Luna replied, "It is still tough without Celestia and it is even harder on us because we can not find White Tooth, who we believe is responsible for not just Celestia's death, but for the deaths of many ponies."

Colgate hugged the princess and replied, "I'm sorry your Majesty. I feel so bad for sending them all to Fillydelphia. Despite being a real bear to work under back so many years ago, I thought he would be the one who would take care of all their dental needs. I never imagined he would kill them."

Luna asked, "I know Lyra was your sister and Pinkamena was your receptionist, what happened to them?"

Colgate replied, "I honestly don't know. I gave them their bonuses, they went to Manehattan for some rest and relaxation but they never returned. It really bothers me, especially since I was always close with Lyra and grew close to Pinkamena but I know they would want me to move forward."

Luna hugged Colgate and said, "And that is why we think so highly of you. You lose your home, you lose your business, you go into a coma, die for a few minutes and your sister and receptionist go missing but you still persevere." She looked towards the academy and said, "We take it you are here to hire new graduates to work for you?"

Colgate replied, "Yep, you bet I am!"

Luna wished her farewell and Colgate headed to the commencement ceremony for the hygienists. She was watching all of the ponies go up and get their certificates when one particular pony caught her eye, Amethyst Star. She knew Amethyst loved Ponyville and figured that she would make a great hygienist.

After the ceremony she approached Amethyst and said, "Congratulations Amethyst, I'm happy to see a Ponyville native get her certificate."

Amethyst knew what Colgate was going to ask next and replied, "Thanks Colgate and I know what you are going to ask, and yes I would like to be your hygienist. It will be so nice to return home and to work for a pony who can persevere through anything."

Colgate smiled and said, "Wow, I can tell you're going to be amazing already! Now I need to find a pony who would be interested in being my receptionist."

Before she could walk even a few steps Sea Swirl, who had just got her clerical certificate rushed to Amethyst, who was a good friend of hers. The two began to talk a bit when Sea Swirl asked, "Amethyst, I know you have been actively searching but have you found a job yet?"

Amethyst smiled and replied, "Yep, Colgate came up here and hired me immediately after the ceremony."

Sea Swirl was happy and hugged her friend. She said, "Congratulations Amethyst, now I just need to find a job."

Amethyst tapped Colgate on the shoulder and motioned towards Sea Swirl. Colgate knew that she too is a Ponyville native and loved her hometown. She asked, "Sea Swirl, I know you love Ponyville and I am wondering if you would be interested in being my....."

Sea Swirl interrupted, "Yes I would love to be your receptionist!"

Colgate smiled and replied, "Well then, you're hired! Let's head back to Ponyville and get ready for my grand re-opening on Monday."

Her two new employees enthusiastically headed home with their new boss. After a day of rest they headed to the office early Monday morning. When the clock struck eight Colgate unlocked the door and just as the first snow of the season began to fall, in came Applejack, her first patient since reopening. Applejack said, "Howdy Colgate, how are y'all doing?"

Colgate replied, "I am doing quite well, how about you?"

Applejack replied, "Well Ah'm doing great. Ah'm glad to see you doing so much better and back in business."

Amethyst asked, "Well Applejack, shall we go in the back and get started?"

Applejack replied, "You bet!"

After Amethyst checked out Applejack's teeth Colgate headed over to take a better look at them and just like every other visit, her teeth were perfectly fine. This brought a huge smile to Colgate and she thought to herself, "Never again will I allow myself to descend into the madness I fell into. It is truly a great time to be alive!"
