The Great Divide of Equestria

‘Oh hi, Pinkie Pie,’ Fluttershy spoke softly to the Earth Pony as she bounced into her house. ‘Are you here to check on the birds?’

‘Indeedy I am!’ Pinkie replied in an excited fashion.

Fluttershy brought Pinkie outside, to where she was greeted by a flock of at least 30 birds, all different breeds, perched on a large tree.

‘Ok, just like we practiced.’ Fluttershy told the birds. To which, after a 4 beat count-in, they sang a beautiful melody. Pinkie was very impressed. She frolicked around and got into the song quite greatly.

After the birds finished the song, Pinkie gave a thunderous round of applause, which scared off the birds.

‘Oh, sorry Fluttershy, I didn’t mean to scare them.’ Pinkie apologised.

‘It’s quite alright, they’ll be back in a few hours,’ Fluttershy replied. ‘Would you like a drink or something to eat?’

‘Of course I would!’

Fluttershy walked back into the cottage, where she brought some water and a sandwich for both her and Pinkie, they ate in silence.

‘Oh yeah, I almost forgot,’ Pinkie Pie realised. ‘This may be a bit weird of me to ask, but have you been close to Rainbow Dash recently?’

‘Not more than we usually have,’ Fluttershy muttered. ‘Why do you ask?’

‘Well, basically, I’ve been having these CRAZY dreams lately. It involved the fall of Equestria and yadda yadda…’

‘Wait, what?!’

‘Lemme finish! And basically in my dream Rainbow Dash talked about how you and she were IN LOVE! I was like “WOAH!” and she was like “YEAH I AM!”’

‘Oh… well, I wouldn’t really say that…’

‘Fluttershy, I know you’re lying. Just spill the beans already.’ Pinkie had a grin from ear to ear at this point.

‘Gah, fine, me and Rainbow Dash… we’ve sorta been dating ever since we gave up the elements of harmony. You promise not to tell anybody?’

‘Cross my heart and hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye! Well I’m proud of you two, why didn’t you tell anybody though?’

‘I don’t know really, it’s just been something private, I guess.’

‘Don’t you think it’s something worth telling everybody? It’s something worth a party in my books!’

A knock is heard. ‘Coming!’ Fluttershy flapped her wings and floated over to the door. Rainbow Dash was stood in the doorway, inspecting herself in a hand mirror held in her hoof. Fluttershy opened it and dread shot through her.

Rainbow can’t know that Pinkie Pie knows the secret!

Fluttershy blocked Rainbow from entering by embracing her. ‘You seem… welcoming today.’ Rainbow responded.

‘Oh, sorry, it’s just felt like a while since I’ve seen you.’ Fluttershy said, still hugging her.

‘We saw each other yesterday, don’t you remember?’
‘Oh yeah, I forgot. Heheheh…’ Fluttershy zipped into the garden and whistled. Suddenly, a horde of rabbits, dogs, cats, and the like stampeded towards Pinkie. They picked her up and huddled away from Fluttershy’s home.

‘See you at the party!’ Pinkie yelled.

‘You too,’ Fluttershy looked at her hooves. ‘I’m such a meanie for pushing Pinkie out like that. But Rainbow Dash can’t know…’

The day had finally arrived for Twilight’s birthday party. Spike had agreed to take her for a look around the new Ponyville library, he knew it was going to be painful as Twilight would want every book there, but he went through with it so then Pinkie Pie could set up her ‘Super-amazing-awesome-craaaaazy birthday blast.’

Everyone was helping out with making the throne room look spectacular. Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy hung the banners from the ceiling. Applejack laid out the selections of food (that were probably made by her). Rarity helped with where the decorations were going in the room itself alongside Pinkie.

The Cutie Mark Crusaders also got dragged into helping out the ponies. They organised and put up the party games in a slightly clumsy fashion, but they did it nonetheless.

Finally, the preparations were complete, Pinkie jumped for joy when she saw the magnificent display.

‘Ok, everypony hide! Twilight should be coming any minute now!’ She screamed.

And everypony did as they were told, they all ran and flew to different places in the room. Conveniently enough, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy where hid in the same position, with no one else around. They hid under one of the banisters.

‘Are you ok, Shy?’ Rainbow asked the innocent mare.

‘Of course I am sweetheart, why wouldn’t I be?’ Fluttershy replied.

‘I dunno, for the past few weeks you’ve been acting a little strange, like you’re hiding something from me.’

‘Fine… Pinkie knows about us, but she Pinkie promised.’

‘Well, that pony does take things pretty seriously when it comes to Pinkie promises.’

‘Are you mad at me?’ Fluttershy braced herself for a serious yelling.

‘Of course not,’ Rainbow said with relief. ‘I’m glad you told someone, I couldn’t really hold it in for much longer myself.’

They both chuckled silently and gave each other a quick kiss. As soon as they did, Twilight opened the door and turned on the light.

‘SURPRISE!’ A roar echoed through the halls of the castle. This startled Twilight, but she was really ecstatic that her friends put this all together.

‘Hey Twilight, happy birthday!’ Pinkie squealed as she jumped behind one of the thrones, wearing birthday hat.

‘Wow, Pinkie, I wasn’t expecting this!’ Twilight was bewildered at the beautiful decorations.

‘What wouldn’t I do for my favourite princess in the whole wide world?’ Pinkie then looked at Celestia, Luna and Cadence, all 3 seemed to be a bit annoyed at the previous statement. She looked back at Twilight.

‘Can you not get your Alicorn buddies to beat me up?’ She said with a slight stutter to her voice.

Twilight sighed with a smile. ‘You have my word.’ They hugged.

‘WOW PINKIE! THIS PARTY IS A BLAST!’ Rainbow yelled at Pinkie, the sound of dubstep ringing in their ears.

‘THANKS!’ pinkie replyed. Everypony was up on the dancefloor as DJ-P0N3 was blasting out tracks at an ear shattering level. Pinkie went to the bathroom, as soon as she walked out however, her whole body twitched.

‘Oh no! There’s a doozy coming!’

As soon as Pinkie said this, a rumbling was felt beneath her feet. It was barely felt; it seemed that nopony else noticed. Pinkie did, however. The rumbling grew. One by one, the collections of ponies started to realise what was going on.

What was happening?
