A Second Chance
The New Chapter One
Load Full StoryNext ChapterAs I made my way into the airport, I shivered from the cold outside. I was flying from where I lived in Minnesota, to go see my family in Utah. As I walked inside the airport I looked up to the sign which had posted that all flights would be delayed for a while. As I looked for somewhere to sit, I began to notice the large amount of people here, along with the lack of a seat. ‘It’s the holidays, of course it’s packed in here.’
Finally finding an open seat, I began making my way towards it. Looking who I’d be stuck between for an indefinite amount of time, I saw a man and a woman, both of which had magazines in their hands. Looking closer I saw the woman had a comic, not a magazine. One looked very bored laying on the airport couch with a comic on her face, while the other was reading a magazine called Game Informer. I sat in between them because it was the only open chair. I tried making conversation with the bored one but she seemed off in her own little world talking to herself. So I looked to the other and started to say something, but he didn’t seem to be listening.
I sat in silence thinking before talking to the other. Before talking to her I looked at her appearance. She had a light tan, auburn hair, dark blue jeans, pink sneakers, and a white tank top.
I replied with “ Uh hi I’m Alex. So, what are you reading?”
She looked at me with the strangest expression then said ”I was looking at the pictures, why would I read it?”
I replied by saying “To know what the comic i-… you know what nevermind.” I officially gave up on that conversation. Turning to attempt conversation with the other person before finally realizing he had headphones in. After mentally facepalming, I tapped his shoulder to which he replied with
“Yes? would you like something?” taking in his appearance he had a light red shirt blue jeans, black sneakers, brown hair, and slightly tanned
“Hey, what’re you listening to?”
“The Living Tombstone.”
“Oh I’ve heard some of his music. Have you heard his New song about Five Nights At Freddy’s 2?”
“I’m listening to it now actually.”
“So, are you a gamer?”
“Yeah, how did you know?”
“I saw you with a Game Informer magazine, so I made the connection.”
“Makes sense.”
“So what kind of games do you like to play?”
“I mainly play strategy games, but I play shooters as well.”
“Like what kind of shooters and strategy?”
“You know the game Natural Selection 2?”
“Yeah I’ve heard of it before. Never played it though.”
“Those are the kinds of games I like best.”
“I’m more for the adventure, shooter, puzzle, and platformer games like Zelda, Mario, and Skyrim.”
“So, what’s your name?”
“The names Alex, and yours?”
“My name’s Tanner.”
“So, who’s the excitable on-”
Kira jumps in here, “Ooh are you talking about me?”
“Yeah.”
“Honestly? No idea,” I heard him say.
All of a sudden a Clerk comes onto on the P.A. system and explains that due to the raging snowstorm outside, all outgoing flights have been cancelled.
“God Dammit, well looks like my day just freed up. So do you guys want to grab a coffee,” I asked.
“I shouldn’t really drink coffee” Kira employed “But I’ll take a soda!”
“I could go for a coffee,” I heard from Tanner.
“Alright I'm buying. And little munchkin can have water”
“I’m okay with that,” she said, she then flicked my nose “but I’m pretty sure I’m older than you.”
With that we began walking to the food court, but as we were walking past a row of chairs I accidentally bumped into some guy who was trying to get up. With a grunt, he hit the floor accompanied by several splashes and cries of anger. “Sorry about that mate. Didn’t see you there.” Reaching out to offer him a hand up, it was quickly swatted away. As the guy stood up I was able to take in his appearance. He was a bit taller than me, had black hair that stuck out here and there, and gave me a glare that looked like it could kill.
“Well maybe you should look where you’re going,” He rebutted.
“Here let me get you a new coffee. Once again, I’m sorry about running in to you.”
“Don’t even bother. It’s not like you’d be smart enough to anyway judging as you keep walking into people” He snarled.
“Well no need to be rude about it. It was an accident.” added Kira.
“Then you shouldn’t have bumped into him then,” exclaimed the female in their group.
“Well if you would remember she wasn’t the one that did” noted Tanner as he adjusted his satchel.
“Don’t get smart with us nerd” said the final one in their group.
The tension in the air was thick. Kira was staring daggers at the girl. While Tanner muttered to himself quietly, the words ‘watching you suffer’ just able to be heard. “Hey man It was an accident. We can see you’re busy. C’mon guys, let’s go” I said.
“Where do you think you’re going? Too afraid to stand up for yourselves?” one of the guys called
“HA I knew they were wimps!” the other exclaimed.
At this point, I stopped and just stood there for a moment or two before I began walking again.
“I guess that proves it, doesn’t it.”
At this my thoughts began going down a darker road. “Why don’t we take this outside, then?” As much as I’d hate possibly getting arrested, I really just wanted to bash this guys face in.
“Look at that Jack, wimp’s grown a spine.”
”You know what I think they did Jack,” this was the last straw. I was ready to gut him there and then but, was stopped when Tanner grabbed my arm and spoke “Wait till we get outside, then you can beat the shit out of them.”
“If you guys are looking to start something, try not to use insults a five year old would say. It makes you seem idiotic,”Tanner spat
“Oh you’re so dead,” Jack exclaimed
“Then come on dumbass!”
We started heading for the door, Seth and his lackeys right behind us as we walked to the door, maneuvering around people as we went. Finally we reached the doors of the airport. Entering the snowstorm that now held us in its cold grasp, we continued walking until we were a good distance from the doors. Without hesitation one of them pushed me into a nearby snowbank. Caitlin was doubled over in pain by the time I had gotten up with Kira standing over her. Tanner and Jack were trading blows. Which left me with Seth.
“Looks like it’s just you and me then huh?”
“Less talking more fighting!!”
“Straight to the point then. Alright, come get some!”
The fight started with him running straight at me.I countered by sidestepping so he fell into the snow bank he had pushed me into before we started fighting. When he stood up, he threw a wide swing. Dodging and delivering a kick to his stomach, winding him. To my surprise, he recovered quickly. He quickly got up and began punching me in the ribs. Shrugging off the hit we continued fighting blow for blow. I begin hearing something other than the snowstorms howling winds. Deciding to ignore it, I continued hitting him. At this point my ribs were in constant pain, and breathing was beginning to become a chore. As the sound got louder I was able to identify what it was coming from. As if to further prove what it was, I saw a pair of lights beginning to grow brighter and brighter. As the vehicle was closing in I heard music blaring, but I wasn’t too sure what it was. The Music being a temporary distraction was all he needed, as I suddenly felt myself leaning against a car that wasn’t there before, and my face stinging. Getting back up, I tried lunging at him, only to be hit mid-air, and go crashing back into the concrete of the parking lot.
I suddenly realised our very big mistake, we were still in the parking lot. In a blizzard, that was so strong, drivers couldn’t see where they were going. I was suddenly very, very, worried. Getting up off the ground I tried to start running out of the way of whatever was coming towards us. I then felt something yank me back and back to the ground. Getting up again and turning around, I noticed Seth standing there, smiling, while the vehicle was approaching behind him. “Trying to run? I don’t think so.”
“I’m not running away from you! If you’d turn around, you would see what I’m running from!” At this, he just chuckled, all the while keeping up the massive grin on his face.
“Nice try, but I’m not turning around just so you can knock me on my ass.” At this point, I think the driver realized we were there, as they started honking. I saw Seth turn to the side slightly, and I saw the color drain from his face, along with his smile.
The driver of the SUV started turning, trying not to hit us, but this made things worse as they started swerving all over the place. The driver was less than a few feet away when he suddenly swerved to the left, hitting one of the cars that were parked there.
I saw some orange light coming from the inside of the SUV, and instantly realized what it was. A fire had started inside, and looked like it was spreading fast. Turning around and starting to run towards the airport building, the smell of gas hit me. At this, time slowed down. I saw the fire reach where the gas tank was, which had a large opening exposing the fuel inside. I heard someone yell “Oh sh-”.
All I could feel was an intense burning feeling on my back, and a sense of weightlessness. There was a ringing in my ears, and all I could see was an orange light. The last thing I saw before I passed out was a stuffed bear, burnt to the point of barely being recognizable. I could feel myself drifting off into unconsciousness, and the last thing I saw was the bear, flames slowly eating away at it, and a heart saying ‘Happy Birthday” in it’s hands.
I was in and out of consciousness constantly after that. I picked up a few words here and there, some of them being “male driver” and “only one dead.” to be realistic, I knew I wouldn’t be leaving the hospital alive. What kept me going so long was wanting to say goodbye to my friends and family really, but in the end my consciousness came to a halt, sending me into the dark abyss that awaited.
