Kindness is Key
Seeing Beyond the Surface
Load Full StoryNext ChapterDerpy Hooves fluttered down in front of her house. The windows reflected the bright afternoon sunlight as she stepped inside.
“Calvin?!” She shouted.
No response.
She ascended the small flight of stairs to the guest bedroom. She rapped on the door three times with her hoof.
Still no response.
She opened the door quietly and saw the human sitting at his desk, scribbling furiously.
Calvin was the third human to arrive in Equestria, learning its customs and traditions fairly quickly within his year long stay so far in Equestria. He had a job as a writer for the Ponyville Post, as he loved the local gossip and news. It also meant he got to spend time with Princess Twilight Sparkle, talking with her about news and rumors from Canterlot. His job meant long hours writing away at his desk in Derpy’s guest room. Derpy was the one who first found him in the Everfree forest while chasing a storm cloud off. Calvin had looked lost and confused. Being the kind mare she was, Derpy dove down and guided him out of the forest. Calvin slept at Derpy’s house, much to the enjoyment of her daughter Dinky, who loved the prospect of a new playmate. Calvin and Derpy would spend many stormy nights curled up together with Dinky, who was very rattled by the thunder and lightning. Calvin had never felt more cozy in his life. However, he knew he had to get a job. He was a journalist for the Providence Journal back home on Earth so he figured why not do the same here. The local newspaper signed him on almost immediately. Unfortunately, this meant less time with Derpy and Dinky, which unknown to both of them, he craved with a passion. Derpy’s smile lit up his day and made his heart flutter into his throat.
“Calvin?” Derpy asked quietly, jerking Calvin out of his writing frenzy.
Calvin jumped with a slight yelp, startled by the sudden appearance of the pegasus mare.
“Oh! Sorry! I didn’t know you were busy!” Derpy made a motion to walk out.
Calvin swallowed the lump in his throat as he turned to face the blond maned mare.
“No I was finished anyway. I think I need a vacation pretty soon.” Calvin sighed, putting his papers and writing utensils away in the desk.
“Alright, that just about does it.” Calvin said, putting the last of his work away and standing up. “What did you want?” Calvin asked.
“Oh, I was just seeing if you were home.” Derpy said sheepishly.
“Oh, well here I am. Wanna go sit on the couch downstairs?” Calvin suggested.
“I’d love to” Derpy said, content with spending time with the human.
That was one of the things that Calvin had trouble adjusting to. The very snuggly and clingy nature of ponies. Once he got over that, he savored the experiences with Derpy, the way her silky fur brushed against the bare skin of his hands and arms made him shiver.
Derpy felt the same way, she loved the way his fingers went through her mane as he would snuggle with her. They were no couple, but they just enjoyed each other’s company right? Derpy couldn’t hide her unsure nature and a crooked look made its way across her face. She loved the way his sky blue eyes sparkled in the light and the way the warmth of his large body spread over her smaller frame was almost dream-like.
She hopped up onto the couch and waited for Andrew to lay back before climbing up onto his chest and nuzzling into him.
Quite some time had passed before Derpy broke the silence.
“Calvin?”
“Yeah Derpy?” Calvin respond.
“Do you think I’m ugly?” She said almost in a whisper.
Calvin sucked in a large breath, not expecting any kind of question like this.
“I knew it. I can be as kind as anypony but no stallion will ever want somepony like me.” Derpy made to get up but Calvin held her down.
“Derpy Hooves, don’t you dare say something like that. I think you are beautiful from your mane to your tail, no matter what anypony says.” Calvin held her forelegs and looked into her sparkling golden pools.
“What about my eyes? Nopony likes that freaky part of me.” Derpy frowned again.
“Your eyes are one of your best traits. It sets you apart from other mares, that is what makes you special. You’ve got the looks and the mind. Don’t let anypony tell you that you are not loved, because you are. Dinky loves you, I love you.” Calvin let the last part slip out of his mouth.
Derpy’s heart went into her stomach. Did he really say what she think he said?
“What did you just say?” Derpy’s head cocked to the side.
“I said I love you...” Calvin whispered, a blush painting his cheeks a rosy pink.
“That’s what I thought...” Derpy leaned in to Calvin’s face, her muzzle inches from his mouth.
“Calvin, you have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for you to say those three little words to me.” Derpy said softly, her breath hitting Calvin’s nostrils.
Her breath smelled of blueberry muffins and was absolutely intoxicating to Calvin.
“Why me?” Calvin asked.
“Because nopony ever cared for me and Dinky like you do. You’ve become a part of the family. Whenever you’d go to Canterlot, Dinky would sit around with nothing to do on the weekends and I would just wait for you to return, not wanting anything other than to cuddle with you and have you run your fingers through my mane. You show kindness to somepony as different as me.” Derpy said, smiling.
“If it makes you feel any better, I can’t help but notice you have a nice flank.” Calvin smirked. This earned him a light bop on the head with Derpy’s hoof.
“I’m flattered. But do you really mean it? Do you really love me?” Derpy asked.
Calvin could see the sincerity in her eyes. He knew the right answer for her and him.
“Yes Derpy Hooves. I love you with all my heart and soul and little Dinky too.” He said in a soft voice.
Derpy closed the gap between them and her lips met his. The soft flesh of her lips tasted exactly like it smelled, like fresh blueberries. The two stayed like this, Derpy’s tail flicking in excited motions. Calvin brought his hands to her ears and began to scratch behind them lightly. Derpy let out a happy sigh as she now completely melted into his embrace.
“EWWW!” Dinky’s high pitched voice came from the doorway of the den.
Derpy pulled away from Calvin quickly with a light smack and stared wide eyed at the little filly in the doorway.
“I-uh didn’t hear you come in sweetie!” Derpy’s blushing face was lit up with embarrassment.
Dinky’s face lit up and she bounced over to the two grown-ups on the sofa as Calvin sat up, still holding Derpy close. Dinky hopped up, sat beside Calvin and nuzzled her head into his side, making sure not to poke him with her horn.
“Does this mean you might be my new daddy?” Dinky looked up hopefully at Calvin and Derpy.
“It just might Dinky, it just might.” Calvin smiled warmly as he looked at the grey pegasus in his arms. Derpy smiled back and nuzzled herself with Calvin, feeling his warmth envelope her body once more.
“Mommy, can Calvin be my new daddy?” Dinky asked her mother.
“Well little Dinky, it’s going to take sometime, but right now, he’s on the right track.” She smirked before kissing Calvin again.
“Ewww!” Dinky whined as the two continued to kiss.
They could only laugh at the filly’s discomfort.
“You’ll understand when you’re older kiddo.” Calvin said, rubbing the top of Dinky’s head.
