Part 2

The warm sun hung high in the sky as the four ponies made their way through town. It's golden rays heating the air, creating a balmy summer's day. There wouldn't be many more days like this one left this year, summer was already winding down, and fall was just around the bend. Still, Twilight was grateful she could spend it with her friends. Well, they may not of been her best friends, but this day was too nice to spend cooped up inside the library. Actually, that wasn't really true, not totally. Trixie had become one of Twilight's closest friends. Except she was quite a bit more than a friend now, even if at times the blue mare was frustratingly embarrassing. Even now, the former show mare trotted along with her head held high, just to draw attention to the collar and tag she wore. The looks and giggles she got just seemed to please Trixie, assuring her that more ponies knew who she belonged to. But they just made the purple librarian blush as they continued towards the market.

But Twilight couldn't really complain. Applejack was busy getting an early start on apple bucking season. Rainbow Dash was likely helping with that, or sleeping in one of the apple trees, either one was very likely. Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy had both likewise disappeared somewhere for a few days. Fluttershy had mentioned something about some sort of bird migration, and Pinkie had excitedly offered to go with her. Knowing the pink earth pony, it wasn't going to end up being the quite time that Fluttershy was used to. And Rarity, well, Twilight wasn't really sure what she was doing. Something about Canterlot and a client, though the designer had kept the details of it all rather vague. And, of course, Spike was in Canterlot as well. Twilight wondered if the two of them were seeing each other while they were both away.

As that thought passed through the lavender unicorn's mind, her dictionary-like brain ended up pulling out other possible meanings for the phrase 'seeing each other'. One of which made her stop dead in her tracks, her cheeks turning a bright shade of violet as she tried to push back the thought and mental imaged by sheer will alone. This change wasn't lost on Trixie either, who let the other two mares continue on by themselves as she stepped back to look at the troubled unicorn.

"M-mistress? Is something wrong?" She asked in a low whisper, looking worried as she leaned in close. This managed to snap Twilight out of her mental struggle, the librarian shaking her head to help fling away vulgar thoughts about her little assistant and best friend.

"W-what? No, it's nothing. Hehe, I'm fine," she offered with a sheepish grin. Trixie, however, looked crestfallen.

"You don't like Trixie's collar, do you?" She said, having come to her own conclusion of what was wrong. Twilight blinked in surprise, reaching a hoof up to rest on the upset mare's shoulder.

"No, no! I do, really. It's just, I had something else on my mind, and I'd rather not think about it right now." She smiled back, leaning in to give a little nuzzle to the end of Trixie's nose. "Just thinking about Spike and some of our other friends. It's no big deal."

"Ah, yes. Mistress cares so much for everypony," Trixie said, more of her pleasant mood returning after that little nuzzle. "Trixie also hopes that they are all doing well."

"Heh, I'm sure they are. And remember, I said not to call me 'Mistress' in public," Twilight said with a little smirk before she started to talk past her lover. "Now come on, we're about to get left behind."

Trixie blushed slightly, at both forgetting what her mistress had ordered, and for being reprimanded in public for it. After a moment to compose herself, she took off, cantering up to the waiting librarian.

"Y-yes, of course, Twilight! Trixie is coming!"

The market was bustling with activity today. It seemed as if every pony in Ponyville wanted to take advantage of the warm weather. Merchants had set up tables and stands in front of their stores, while smaller sellers had erected stalls between the buildings or in the shade of the few trees that decorated the market square. Everything was being sold, from freshly picked fruits to freshly baked pies. Beadwork and other hoof-crafts, to flowers both grown and folded from paper. There were even a few performers, taking advantage of the large crowd to attract an audience.

Twilight couldn't help but smile as Trixie watched another unicorn up on an old wagon perform simple, but entertaining magic tricks. The former show mare had an embarrassed blush to her cheeks, as if she had only now realizes how silly she must of looked when she had done the same thing. Twilight took a step closer, leaning against her lover as she whispered softly into that blue ear.

"You were better than he is." The voice was soft and soothing, but also there was a slightly sultry tone. Trixie's blush just deepened at that. Her embarrassed look turning sheepish as she looked down at her hooves for a moment before leaning in herself. Pressing her cheek against Twilight's, she closed her eyes slowly.

"Trixie is, now.."

The two lovers shared the moment for a while longer before they rejoined their two friends, who had found a photo booth. Lyra had insisted they get some pictures done together, and they had both just finished when Twilight and Trixie returned. Lyra held up the strip of photos, each one showing the couple together, often with Lyra trying to pull some silly face for the camera. Bon Bon pouted slightly next to her as the mint green unicorn displayed the photos proudly.

"Those things always make my eyes look green.." the earth mare complained. This just brought a comforting hoof from her lover, pulling Bon Bon closer, within nuzzling reach.

"Aww.. Don't worry about it hun. Those baby blues must only be for me." Lyra said, giving her beloved a sly, but comforting smile. This seemed to do the trick, the earth pony melting into that smile as they both nuzzled and kissed tenderly. Twilight and Trixie couldn't help but blush at the display. Trixie found herself leaning just a bit closer to her mistress, thinking about doing the same with the librarian right here, perhaps even more. But before her imagination could run away with her, Twilight spoke up, gently interrupting the lovers' kiss as well.

"Um, heh, hey. Why don't we look around and see if we can find something to eat her, hmm?"

"Great idea! I'm starving" Lyra laughed, still with one hoof about Bon Bon's shoulders. With that the two couples made their way through the crowd, browsing at the different stands and stalls set up to offer quick, cheap meals. As they went, they also shopped around, every table and stand seeming to offer something new. In the end, Twilight had purchased two new books, sold by a small collector hoping to clean out space for some new items. Lyra had found a new set of strings for her lyre, while Bon Bon had some new spices tucked away in her saddle bag, hoping to use them in a new batch of taffy. Their quest for dinner not yet forgotten, the friends had settled on a small cafe, which had set up tables and chairs out front to offer diners a chance to eat out in the fresh air.

As dinner came and went, the four friends talked and laughed, going on about any topic that came to mind. The day, all the things they saw at the market. About what each of them has been doing lately. The sun was starting to get low in the sky, the shadows getting longer as the light slowly shifted towards a warm, pleasant orange. Bon Bon noticed this, quickly finishing her drink with a sense of urgency.

"Sweety, would you mind if I go look at something for a bit?" She said, giving a smile as she spoke to her beloved mint unicorn. "I won't be gone long. You just stay right here, ok?"

This caught Lyra a bit by surprise, but in the end she just smiled back and nodded, "Alright. Just don't get lost, ok?" she responded with a little wink. At hearing this, Trixie perked up too. She watched as the cream earth mare got up from her seat, starting to walk off back into the market square. This was her chance, if she could be alone with Bon Bon for a few minutes. She could apologize, smooth things over between herself and the earth pony, then her mistress would be so proud when she told her back at the library. With a quickly placed smile, she looked over to Twilight.

"Mis- Twilight, is.. Would it be alright if Trixie went with Miss Bon Bon?" She asked in a hopeful voice. Both Lyra and Twilight blinked at that, a little surprised at Trixie's request. Twilight nodded.

"Ok, just don't get into any trouble, alright?" At that Trixie's smile grew as she quickly left her half-finished drink and galloped off to catch up with Bon Bon. As the show mare left, Lyra just looked over at the slightly embarrassed librarian, a little smirk to her lips. Twilight could just sigh, her hoof pressed to her forehead with a small shake to her head.

"Is.. Is it alright if Trixie accompanies you, Miss Bon Bon?" Trixie said as she caught up with the earth pony. She tried to put on a pleasant, reassuring face, but in reality she was more nervous than the first time she had gone on stage. Trixie was never one to apologize, much less worry what another pony thought. That is, at least not any pony she didn't consider special in her eyes. Bon Bon let out a rather annoyed, but relenting sigh, stopping in her tracks as she regarded the blue unicorn.

"Oh, fine. I guess it's ok." She said, resuming her little trot towards a particular store. "Just don't do anything weird, alright?"

"O-Of course! Trixie will behave." This just rewarded the unicorn with an annoyed grumble from Bon Bon as she narrowed her eyes, but other than that she didn't protest as the two got closer to the store. Trixie's mind kept turning flips. What should she say? How should she start this? Would Bon Bon even accept an apology, or would she just get more upset? In the end, with no delicate ways to say it coming to mind, Trixie just gave a sigh and let it all come out.

"Trixie.. Trixie wants to apologize.."

This made Bon Bon stop dead in her tracks. This was the last thing she expected to come out of the show mare's lips.

"Apologize? For.. For what?"

"For.. For what Trixie and Miss Lyra did." Trixie's head hung low, too afraid to look the other mare in the eye. "Trixie knows how much Miss Lyra means to you. We wish events did not have to happen the way they did. We.. I am sorry.." Trixie let her voice trail off, eyes closed as she awaited the earth mare's reply. She could be yelled at, forgiven, accused. Just the fact that she had gotten it out made the unicorn feel better.

Bon Bon couldn't believe what she had just heard. She chewed on her lower lip a bit as the words ran through her head for a few moments. Eventually, she just sighed, reaching over to place a hoof on Trixie's shoulder. This seemed to bring the show mare around, her ears perking up as she turned to look towards Bon Bon for the first time since she had spoken.

"Trixie, I.. I understand. I may not like what happened, but I know why it happened. If.. If Lyra hadn't done what she did, it would of been even worse." She said as she let her hoof rub comfortingly against Trixie's shoulder. Her lips starting to pull into a sincere, friendly smile. "You're forgiven. And I'm glad you wanted to apologize."

It took Trixie a moment to let that sink in. She had just apologized, and instead of being accused or hated, this pony had forgiven her, even accepted her. It made Trixie's heart soar, inside she knew she had done her mistress proud. Bon Bon let her warm smile continue.

"Now come on. There's something special I need to buy. And since you're here, you can help me pick it out!" The earth pony said as she let her hoof drop from Trixie's shoulder and continued on to the store. Trixie snapped out of her little daze, cantering to keep up as the two of them entered.

Inside awaited them a jewelery store. The cases and counters lined with all manner of fine designs. Rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, all crafted by hoof to exquisite detail. Trixie's eyes roamed over each item, the sparkles of the gems reflecting in her eyes. She had worn cheap costume jewelery at times when she had performed, but this was nothing like that. This was the real thing. Bon Bon had made her way over to a display case, slowly looking over and judging each item set out for view.

"What are we here to get?" Trixie asked, her eyes still roaming about all the many gems and fine chains. Bon Bon just shrugged at the question.

"Oh, I don't know yet. I haven't decided what I'm going to get her."

"Her? You mean Miss Lyra?" The unicorn had assumed Bon Bon was shopping for herself, but now that she thought about it, there wasn't any pony else who she thought Bon Bon would buy something like this for. Bon Bon just giggled as she compared two rings.

"Of course! I thought I'd get her a gift."

"A gift? You mean for her birthday?" Trixie asked, suddenly a bit worried that she should of thought of something to give to the mint green unicorn. "Or is it an anniversary gift?" Bon Bon just shook her head.

"No reason. I, well, I just decided I'd like to get her something. Lyra's been so good to me, I just wanted to get her something to show how much I care." she smiled to the blue unicorn, a happy giggle escaping her lips before she looked back to the display case and gently tapped upon the glass with a hoof. His attention gotten, the merchant reached inside and removed the requested item, a set of two horn rings.

Trixie thought about this for a moment. Bon Bon was buying something, an expensive piece of jewelery, for Lyra, for no reason other than she cared about her. No reason other than she loved her. Trixie had never really given anything to another pony. Of course, she had never really been in love with any pony. At least, not till now. So lost in thought, she didn't realize she was nodding automatically to a question from Bon Bon.

"Oh good! I'd like to see how this looks on a unicorn before I buy it for her."

This broke Trixie out of her own thoughts, just in time to feel two rings being slipped over her horn. Looking up, she saw them just in her peripheral vision. The rings were not jeweled, but they were connected by two delicate golden chains. The chains hung slightly, creating two graceful arcs leading from the smaller upper ring to the larger lower one. Bon Bon regarded them for a bit, tilting her head as she tried to picture her beloved Lyra wearing them. After a moment, Trixie composed herself, holding her head up and trying to look regal.

"Hmmm.. I think they're lovely."

"Trixie would prefer silver instead of gold."

"Maybe, but this isn't for you." Bon Bon snorted a bit before getting her composure back. Her mind made up, she told the merchant she'd take the rings. Trixie somewhat reluctantly allowed them to be slipped off of her horn. After a few more moments, they were placed in a bag, secured with a red ribbon. Bon Bon reached into her saddle bag and set out the bits for them. Trixie took note of how expensive those rings were, but the earth pony didn't seem to care, the smile never leaving her face as she handed over her bits and took the neatly tied bag in her teeth.

Their purchase made, Trixie and Bon Bon left the jeweler's shop, the earth pony looking pleased with herself as she happily trotted back towards their table and the two waiting unicorns. Trixie, however, hung back a bit, thinking to herself. Thinking about what had just happened. Bon Bon had just bought an expensive piece of jewelery, for no other reason than it was a gift meant for the pony she loved. A gift for the pony she loved. As that thought repeated over and over in the unicorn's head, Trixie felt something gently pulling her to go back into the jeweler's shop and find something. Something for the pony she loved. As that realization dawned on her, another fact came to mind, one that had instantly turned her mood somber. She had nothing.

No money, no real property. All the former show mare had was herself, and that she had already given to the one pony she loved. She belonged to Twilight, mind, body, and soul. But still, she couldn't help this feeling, this unreasonable need to give her more. To give her something that truly mattered. Something to express her love for the wonderful unicorn she would give her life for. But still, there was nothing left for her to give. Nothing she could do to buy or find anything to give. But there still had to be something. Something she could give Twilight. Anything.

As she kept to her thoughts, she soon found herself back at the table with her two friends and her beloved. It didn't take long for Twilight notice the crestfallen look on Trixie's face.

"Is everything alright?" Twilight asked as Trixie took her seat next to the purple unicorn. Trixie didn't look up, still lost in her thoughts. She nodded slightly at Twilight's question.

"Yes, every thing's fine, Mistress.." Her voice was a soft whisper, forgetting for a moment that she was in public still. Twilight seemed more worried for her lover than the show mare's momentary forgetfulness. Gently, she reached a hoof over, pulling Trixie closer and letting the blue unicorn rest her head against the librarian's chest. A hoof slowly stroking down that white and blue mane as Trixie looked across the table as Lyra started to unwrap Bon Bon's gift to her. She watched as the green unicorn's golden eyes lit up, seeing the two horn rings. A green glow gently lifted them up from the bag, levitating the rings slowly over the also glowing horn.

Lyra's eyes watered slightly as her hooves went around her lover, pulling the earth pony into a deep, tender kiss. When their lips finally parted, Lyra still held Bon Bon in the embrace.

"I love them! Thank you so much, baby." Lyra's words were just above a whisper. They brought an embarrassed but happy blush to Bon Bon's cheeks.

As Trixie watched, she felt herself warm slightly, her pulse quickening just a bit. A realization had formed, and it slowly pulled her own lips into a happy smile. After letting the idea form fully in her mind she nuzzled herself into the soft fur of her beloved librarian. Perhaps there was something she could give Twilight after all...
