I drastically upped the dosage one night so that Twilight and Spike would fall asleep on the couch together. I needed the opportunity to test just how safe sedating them was. Waiting in the kitchen, I quietly listened to their mumbles and whispers until I heard only silence. It didn't take long, only a few agonizing minutes. I found them sound asleep, curled up together with Twilight around her young charge. She had draped a wing over him, and they were both dozing contentedly just in front of the flickering fireplace.
Carefully, I moved Twilight's wing so I could get to Spike. She didn't respond at all, her limb was completely limp. I picked Spike up and he didn't even stop snoring when I carried him to his room and tucked him into his bed. I gave him a shake, and then a light tap to see if I could wake him up. Even with a firm slap, he refused to stir. Satisfied with his reaction, I figured it was safe enough for me to approach Twilight.
When I went back for Twilight, she was entirely unresponsive. I rarely had a reason to be grateful for my earth pony strength, but I suddenly found myself glad for it. Her larger body was difficult to carry and I actually ended up dragging her to her bedroom and gracelessly tossing her onto her bed. When that didn't wake her up, I knew my dosage had been accurate. Content with that knowledge, I almost left. Instead, I stayed and watched her sleep for a while.

I was the first awake the next morning. I usually needed little sleep, and truth be told, I was much too excited to sleep at all that night. I wasn't that far off. “Good morning Princess, and Prince!” I winked at Spike. Unlike Twilight, he always enjoyed being called Prince, although he would never admit it. He was always such a polite young drake. “Did you two sleep well?”
Twilight answered groggily. “Mhmm.” I smiled at her. She did not have a case of bedhead, and after the care I took of her she still looked perfectly presentable even after stumbling out of bed in a stupor. I thought over how much her life would improve when I was in charge of her. She sleepily started to eat her breakfast, and I couldn't help but be fascinated with her mouth. By now I knew how much sedative it would take to make them pass out, and how much would put them in a deep slumber.
I was nauseous during their dessert. My hooves were shaking as I placed the tea-cups in front of them, and I'm sure I was short of breath. Neither Twilight nor Spike seemed to notice my tense state, or at least didn't comment on it. Twilight took a sip of the potion I'd brewed for them and then looked at me with a raised eyebrow.
“New recipe, Clean?” She asked.
My nervousness overtook common sense, and I panicked. I believed everything was over, that my plan had failed. I couldn't find an answer as the gears of my mind ground to a halt. All I could think was that she knew, and that thought consumed me. She knew what I'd done and what I was planning for that night. Instead of answering her and coming up with an excuse, I just stuttered like an idiot while turning red. “Well... It's.. umm...”
“No need to be embarrassed, Clean. It's fine!” Twilight smiled warmly, reassuring me, while Spike frowned. He clearly didn't like the change, but drank some anyways.
I took a breath, and did my best to recover. “Thank you... Princess.”
Of course she had no clue. Even if she identified that it's new, it doesn't mean she knew what was new. She trusted me completely. I turned and left them to their dessert, and nervously listened to their chatter from the kitchen.
Most of what they said was inconsequential, but Spike reminded me of why I should never underestimate a dragon.
“Twilight, the tea tonight, does it taste a little... bad? Kinda” he smacked his lips, “like magic does?” Of course he could taste the potion. Why hadn't I considered that? He formed spells in his breath, he might even have been able to decipher it. My panic attack continued in the kitchen as I nervously listened intently.
“Spike, Clean's tea always taste like magic!” Twilight giggled warmly, but my mind was screaming. Did she know? Had she always known?
“Right...” Spike sounded dismissive, I could almost hear his eyes rolling. Did he know?
“Besides, I'm sure if he added something to the tea, it was just for our health. Now be polite and drink it. You don't want to hurt his feelings.”
“I guess.” He still sounded concerned. I was ruined, of course he knew what the potion was. How had I miscalculated this? How was I going to explain a zebra potion that made them more compliant? “Thanks, Spike.” Twilight was grateful for his consideration. I was more so. I'd done it, successfully dosed them with the potion. After tonight, things would be much easier. And I certainly owed spike something. I just hadn't decided what yet.

Spike thought on this for a while. He was still young, but dragons are never something to be underestimated. They can be terrifyingly intelligent when they need to be. “Well, we've just got to make her understand that the two of us can handle it. Twilight wants you to spend some more time on yourself, go out making friends or read a book or something. Maybe if you can make the time to read a few books she'll accept that you aren't working too hard.”
I thought on it. It wasn't a grand scheme like I would come up with, it was simple and honest. I was thinking something more along the lines of carefully instilling a fear of hiring new cleaning staff.
