Rush and Skye's Escapades
The Surprise
Previous ChapterChapter 3: The Surprise
Rush was walking alongside Skye on their way to Sugarcube Corner. They wondered why at seven o’ clock there was barely anypony around. After all it wasn’t that late out, and yet the streets looked totally deserted.
“Hey, Skye, I’m glad your cutie mark is the same as ever,” Rush said to start up conversation with his friend. Skye looked at his cutie mark. It was a heart, surrounded by a cloud with wings. It represented his love of freedom and flight.
“I’m glad yours is the same as well,” Skye said to said to his friend. Rush’s bass clef showed off his love of mixing music and “Dropping the Bass!” as his friend had put it. They both had an ongoing joke when they were colts, and they always got into arguments about what they would do and how they had so many interests, that when they grew up, their cutie marks would always change. In their class the next day, they learned that their cutie mark was permanent, but they still kept the joke going.
They had finally made it to a large, gingerbread, looking structure, which Skye assumed was Sugarcube Corner. They walked up to the door and knocked, and surprisingly it was open. They pushed the door open and walked into a completely pitch dark room. Then, out of nowhere, lights came on and lots of ponies were screaming “Surprise!” Even Rush said it.
Skye stopped for a second, on the verge of a heart attack. He wasn’t expecting this many ponies to be here, and he sure as hay wasn’t expecting a surprise like that. All around him, mares and stallions of all colors and heights were smiling at laughing at the shock expressed on Skye’s face. Pinkie Pie bounced over and Rush and Pinkie hugged. They’d only seen each other a few hours ago but they act like it was years since they’d seen each other.
“Pinkie, we scared him good! I bet he wasn’t expecting that!” Rush said to his sister excitedly.
Skye looked all around the room and even recognized a few ponies. There was Pinkie Pie, Lyra and Bon Bon, and even Derpy! He also saw some pony that looked familiar. A white mare with purple shades and a light and dark blue mane stood at a table with headphones on. Skye tried searching his memories for any memory of the familiar mare. It hit him instantly; it was Vinyl Scratch, the famous DJ. Rush had a few of her CD’s around their last house. One, he remembered, was of her lying on her turn table; shades hanging a few inches lower than normal, showing off her crimson eyes, and her holding a different Vinyl Scratch album cover.
“Rush, you got Vinyl Scratch to play here?!” Skye asked in amazement. Rush just stared stupidly at his friend.
“Vinyl Scratch is playing here?! Where?” Rush asked. His friend pointed out the white mare over to the side of the room behind her turn table.
“Sis, you got The Vinyl Scratch to play here, tonight? I LOVE YOU PINKIE!” Rush shouted while hugging his sister. The music was loud but that didn’t stop everypony from having a good time. Skye was so busy finding familiar faces he completely missed the big, white, banner that said “Welcome to Ponyville”.
Before Skye could say hi to anypony, Pinkie had dragged him to get cake and meet her friends. They sat in a circle, talking until Pinkie brought him over, in the form of her pushing him from behind. There were five other ponies in the circle, and Skye was eager to meet as many new friends as possible, since he had just moved in a few days ago.
“Howdy there, pardner, name’s Applejack and Ah’m happy as hay to meet ya” said an orange mare with blonde hair. She had her mane tied up with a tie and she wore a dusty Stetson on her head. On her flank, she had 3 small apples as her cutie mark and they suited her well.
“Hi, I’m Fluttershy” said a yellow mare with a pink mane. “I’m happy to meet you, but if you don’t want to meet me, that’s fine.” She had a few butterflies on her flank and she hid half her face behind her mane. She was barely audible because she spoke in a whisper, but the music playing in the background wasn’t helping either.
A white mare with a purple mane spoke next and in a very fancy sort of tone. “Hello, darling, I’m Rarity, and it’s a pleasure to meet you. I own the Carousel Boutique here in Ponyville, so if you ever need an outfit, and I’m sure you will, you mare killer you, come find me.” She had three diamonds as her cutie mark and her hair looked like it was very carefully taken care of.
“Hey there, hot shot, the names Rainbow Dash, and don’t you forget it.” This mare had a real cocky tone in her voice and it slightly annoyed Skye. She had a light blue coat and a rainbow colored mane. “Anyways, nice to meet you. As a fellow Pegasus, maybe we can get together sometime for a fly-over tour of Ponyville.” Her cutie mark was interesting, because it looked like a cloud shooting a rainbow colored lightning bolt.
“Sounds like I’ll have to take you up on that, Rainbow Dash.” Skye returned with a slightly cocky edge to his voice, which seemed to annoy Rainbow Dash just a bit.
A lavender mare with dark blue hair, followed by a streak of purple, and a streak of pink, spoke next. “Hello there, my name is Twilight Sparkle, and I’m pleased to meet you. I run the library in Ponyville, so if you need some reading material, I’m your mare.” Her cutie mark was a six pointed star, eclipsing a four pointed star, being surrounded by sparkles, the universal symbol of magic.
“It’s very nice meeting you all,” said Skye sincerely. “I hope I can really get to know you all a bit better when there’s not blasting music from all around.”
“Well, sugarcube, we’ll let ya get back tah yer friends and we’ll catch up another time, how’s that sound?” Applejack asked over the booming music.
“Sounds good, I’ll catch up with you all later,” said Skye. None of the mares must’ve heard him over the loud music. Skye walked around talking to somepony every now and then. He was really looking for Rush somewhere. He found his friend still practically standing at the door, staring at Vinyl Scratch.
“Dude, you haven’t moved since I pointed out Vinyl Scratch?” Skye asked, already knowing the answer.
“Yeah man, I can’t talk to her, I’m too nervous,” He responded.
“Dude, you can do it. Go talk to her, you both like mixing music. I’m sure she’ll like you.”
Rush’s mane changed from a calm magenta, and started turning yellow and white again. His eyes grew wide and he started hyperventilating. Skye saw what was happening and slapped him with his front right hoof.
“Snap out of it Gold Rush, pony up and go talk to her!” Skye shouted. Rush’s mane slowly faded back to a light red, but not quite a pink. His eyes returned to normal and he shook his head a bit. The look came over Skye again and Rush just nodded.
Rush’s mane changed very quickly to a yellow and black, and Skye knew from experience this was a surge-of-confidence color change. “Okay, I’m gonna go over there, and talk to her, see ya Skye,” Rush said before trotting off.
“Good luck Rush, you got this!” Skye shouted back.
Skye wandered over to where he saw Bon Bon sitting on a couch and decided to join her.
“Hey Bon Bon, where’s Lyra?” the white Pegasus asked. The cream colored mare turned to her new friend and spoke over the loud music.
“Lyra went to go get some punch; she’ll be back in a second. Look, there she is now.”
The mint green unicorn of Skye’s dreams walked over, with a thin trail of punch running down from her mouth. She rubbed the remaining punch off of her chin and greeted Skye. She sat down next to him, and it looked a bit, peculiar. She sat as though she wanted to lay down with the back of the seat as her headrest. Skye was about to ask Lyra why she was sitting like that but Bon Bon stopped him.
“She doesn’t like being asked about it, it makes her feel like other ponies look down on her, which is ridiculous,” Bon Bon explained.
“Oh ok, I won’t mention it,” he said to Bon Bon. “Hey Lyra, how’s it going?” Skye asked. Lyra looked over at Skye and smiled.
“Well, pretty good I suppose. I had a bit of a long day though, and I couldn’t wait for this party!” Lyra said.
Skye had forgotten about Rush while he was sitting there talking to Lyra. He looked over to find him, slowly trotting over to Vinyl Scratch’s turn table. Vinyl Scratch turned towards him and they started talking to each other. Skye couldn’t hear anything over the loud music but they seemed to be hitting it off. Rush must’ve complimented the white coated DJ, because her cheeks turned a bit red, and she was giggling and looking away. It took a second but Vinyl lowered her shades for a second and showed off her red eyes to Rush. He went over to whisper something into her ear and after a few seconds of thought, she smiled, stepped back and let Rush do his thing. The music instantly stopped, and everypony was confused as to what was happening. They looked in the direction of the two DJs and a few seconds later, a disc was swapped out with one of Rush’s own. Another party song came on, and Skye could tell everypony liked it. Even Vinyl Scratch was bobbing her head to the music and smiling.
Skye was happy that Rush and Vinyl had hit it off so well. His night wasn’t that bad either; he’d met tons of new friends, had delicious cake, and got thrown a welcome party when he moved up here.
The night and party continued on, but eventually everypony left. Rush, Skye, Vinyl Scratch, Lyra, Bon Bon, and Pinkie were the only ones left. Pinkie Pie retired early, which Skye hadn’t thought possible with all the energy that pink pony had.
“I should probably get heading home, I’ve got to cook lots of dishes for a friends catering tomorrow,” said Bon Bon, with a tired expression plastered on her face. She walked out after saying goodbye to everypony who was left. “Bye, Skye. Welcome to Ponyville, I hope you like it here,” she said as she left.
Rush, Vinyl Scratch, Skye and, Lyra were left at sugarcube corner and, not wanting to be a burden at the bakery any longer, headed towards Rush’s house. They all talked of great party festivities and they had a good laugh about the time when the music cut out. Eventually, they made it to Rush’s house, where he invited them in for the night, since it was a bit late to walk home alone. Skye and Lyra Sat down on Rush’s couch while Vinyl Scratch took a look at his sound system. She grabbed a pair of headphones and looked over at Rush.
“Hey, you mind if I check this out?” she asked.
“Go ahead, you might actually like track three,” he replied. The DJ pony put the headphone on her head and turned up track three. She started bobbing her head and grooving to the beat. Rush could tell she liked it, a lot. After she checked out a few more songs, Rush noticed his friends Lyra and Skye at the other end of the living room.
Skye looked over at Rush and Vinyl Scratch who were talking while they looked in his direction. Rush whispered something that made Vinyl Scratch look back in Skye’s direction, giggle, and then nod her head. They both turned and headed up the stairs, but Rush stopped, turned back and winked at his friend. Rush obviously wanted Skye to be alone with Lyra. I guess he did notice me blushing, Skye thought to himself.
“So, how long have you been in Ponyville, Skye?” Lyra asked as she walked over.
“Well, I’ve only been here about a week, but I haven’t met anypony because I was too busy moving.”
They continued the nice conversation until he noticed something on his shoulder. Lyra had fallen asleep on Skye’s shoulder in the middle of her sentence. Skye’s face turned bright red and he thanked Celestia that Lyra wasn’t awake to see him do it. He had a crush on Lyra after all, so this couldn’t turn out so bad. Skye decided to call it a night and lay down next to Lyra. Yeah this was a good day, he thought to himself.
