In deep space there are clouds of chaos. Smaller ones break up against the very strong fields. They move the entire astroid to avoid larger ones.  Maybe most the ponies live underground/in the asteroid to avoid cosmic radiation? Did they know about cosmic radiation? probably some ponies started getting cancer early in space exploration? Did celestia and luna know about it from before they started to explore the stars?
