The war that's determined by sea, air, and heroic actions in the Pacific
Chapter 5: The Battle of Midway
Previous ChapterNext ChapterMidway island is now the most important island to the American's at this point. The Japanese wanted to invade it. Lt.Crowe was now assigned to Midway and he was in charge of all USAAF (United States Army Air Force) squad's at Midway. (A Lieutenant is a higher rank than a Captain in the USAAF)
Dawn June 4th
"All squadrons get airborne now! This is not a drill!", The Midway HQ said on the speakers.
"All squadrons this is Lt.Crowe, defend Midway at all costs. Protect the airfield, oil storages, and anything else important."
This is Wildcat Squadron 5 reporting in. We're right with you as your wingmen Lieutenant."
"Nice to have you boys here! Now follow me everyone!"
American Wildcat and Bufallo fighters were in the air and standing by for Lt.Crowe's orders.
(Bufallo fighters were like the Wildcat fighters but they were smaller and Japanese pilots mistook them as Wildcats.)
"Here they come lock and load boys!", Lt.Crowe said to all of the pilots.
"Look at all of them Leuitenant! There are like a 100 bomber's there, easy targets!
There were Japanese fighters and dive bombers in the sky. They had Kate and Val bombers with a pound bomb on each one of them. And they had 'Zero's' for their fighter escort.
"Alright boys here's how you hunt bombers, you're faster than they are so use that to your advantage. And you're more manueverable to, so don't hang around to long or their gunners will chew you up. And if they have a fighter escort take evasive maneuvers or their escort will send you home in a lunchbox. Got it? Now let's go get us some kills everyone!", The Captain of Wildcat Squadron 7 said.
American and Japanese aircraft were filled in the skies and bullets flied everywhere. The American pilots got easy bomber kills.
"Scratch another one Lieutenant!", one of his wingmen said.
"I just blew that Jap's half end off!", a pilot from the 2nd Buffalo squad.
"He's going down!", a pilot from Wildcat squadron 7 said.
"This is too easy! The Japanese pilots suck at this!", a member of the 8th Buffalo squad replied.
"Watch out Leuitenant there's an unidentified plane on the horizon, it's not one of ours!", another pilot from the 2nd Buffalo squad said.
"Well if it isn't the infamous Leuitenant Crowe, did you think we're going to let you shoot down our bomber squads? We won't let you!", the Japanese ace said.
"Who do you think you are mister?", Crowe said to the ace.
"I'm Kazuya Yamashita, Japanese ace and pilot of the 13th squadron."
"You're the squad that killed my brother at pearl! I'll kill you for this so your friends will get the message!"
"You American scoundrel, you'll not going to survive this!"
"We'll see about that!"
"Sir we'll keep the fighters off of you.", one of his flight men said.
The Japanese ace was flying a J2M7 Raiden, it was nicknamed "Jack" by the allies. The plane was as fast as a wildcat and could carry plane-equipped rockets on them. But they lacked in firepower and armor.
Crowe chased the ace and he was heading towards the airfield. There were TBM Avenger torpedo- bomber and SBD Dauntless scout/dive-bomber were aircraft lined up along the main runways in the right island of the Midway Atoll. He chased the Raiden with his wildcat and passed above the naval yard and went to the airfield where they passed the B-25 medium and B-17 high level bombers taking off the runway. Their mission while the American fighters were defending Midway were to attack the spotted Japanese fleet off Midway. The B-25's were America's newest bomber aircraft that they had. They carried 250 pound bombs and torpedoes as their payload and they had front cannons like fighters did. They had medium sized armor, 2 engines, and decent gun turrets for defense while the B-17 bombers were slow but they had tough armor, great guns on them, 4 powerful engines on thier body, and could carry about 20-30 bombs that were more than the B-25's have but the B-17 doesn't carry torpedoes.
As the pilots zoomed over the airfield Crowe damaged the ace's Raiden but it was still in good shape.
"You're better than I thought but you are ruthless!", the Japanese pilot mocked at Crowe.
Crowe fired his machine guns at the Jap but the bullets missed and he was doing loops.
"Wait if I found his weak spot it must be his engine! I'll go to the clouds and do a surprise attack.", Crowe thought to himself.
Crowe tipped his plane to the clouds and then he disappeared. The Japanese ace didn't know where he went until suddenly he saw Crowe if front of him. Crowe dived down from the clouds, stabilized
his plane and fired his machine guns to the Jap's plane. Crowe shot his engine and his plane's rudder in the back.
"No you American pig, you'll pay for this!", the Jap said to Crowe. His plane was on fire and then exploded in the air and he didn't eject in time.
"That's the beginning of my revenge there Jap.", as Crowe said his last words to ace.
"Crowe this is the Midway naval yard we need your help now!!!"
"Go ahead.", Crowe said
"There's a group of torpedo bombers heading towards the hospital ship which is carrying hundreds of wounded men and very important medical supplies that we can't loose!"
"I'm next to the hospital ship and I see the torpedo bombers heading there now!"
"Hurry they're about to release their payloads!"
Crowe raced towards the five Japanese "Kate" torpedo bombers and went behind them. He then shot down 4 planes and then headed towards the last one. He fired his machine guns at the bomber but it released its payload. Crowe was shocked at the payload that released. The torpedo was heading towards the back of the ship at full speed but something happened.
The torpedo that was heading towards the back of the ship missed the ship by a couple of inches and then exploded when it just hit the shore.
"That was very goddamn lucky Lieutenant, you saved tons of lives today!", the HQ radio operator said to Crowe.
"In my book HQ, skill always beats luck."
"Well you always get that from your cousin in Australia."
"Lieutenant the Jap bombers are retreating!", one of Crowe's wingmen said.
"Nice job everyone! And we took minimal losses to, nice work!"
"Crowe this HQ, CINPAC got the word and he's proud at all of you fly boys!"
June 6th, 1942: Off the coast of Midway.
The Americans had their carrier force ready and planes were ready for takeoff.
"Japanese planes 12 O'Clock! Prepare to take off fighter squadrons now!", Fleet Admiral Nimitez said aboard the USS Enterprise.
"This Lieutenant Crowe Admiral, my fighter squad is up and ready to engage!"
"Nice to see you Lieutenant, now take out those dive-bombers!"
"Affirmative! Engaging now!"
The American Wildcat carrier-based fighters shot the Japanese bombers out of the sky and lost only one plane but the pilot ejected in time.
"All bombers are destroyed sir!", Crowe said to Fleet Admiral Nimitez.
"Nice work Lieutenant, land on the USS Enterprise to refuel and re-arm.
"Affirmative!"
Crowe then went to the Enterprise and landed on its flight deck.
"Crowe we're equipping bombs for your plane right now.", one of the workers said to Crowe.
"Alright and the bombers are ready to take off?"
"They are and they are taking off right now."
"Alright thanks!"
Crowe then took off and responded to the bomber planes.
"This is Lieutenant Crowe all squadrons sound off!"
"This is baker squad, all torpedo bombers are ready to go!"
"This is Charlie squad all dive-bombers are reported in and are ready!"
"Follow me men!"
All of the American planes followed Crowe's Wildcat and we're scouting for any contact.
"Lieutenant have you found any contact?", Nimitez said.
"Negative. Wait new contact, Japanese heavy cruiser!", Crowe said.
"Take it out!", Nimitez said.
Dauntless Dive-Bombers headed towards the Cruiser and sank it with only 2 bombs.
"Cruiser is down sir!", Crowe said.
"Nice job, keep Scouting the area.", Nimitez said.
"Uh sir...!"
"What is it Lieutenant?"
"We've found the enemy fleet!"
"Nice work we found the pride of the Japanese fleet! All airborne units go in for a full scale attack!"
"Affirmative, bombers split from formation and attack the aircraft carriers. We'll deal with the fighters!"
"Affirmative Lieutenant, bomber squads are now attacking."
"This is group 5 we're attacking the Soryu!"
The American dive bombers were heading towards their target while avoiding anti-aircraft guns and flak in the air."
"Approaching target, bombs away!"
The bombs that fell went through the Soryu's flight deck and exploded with fierce force.
"Direct hit! Soryu is sinking."
"This is group 2 with groups 4 and 1 we're attacking the Kaga."
The bombs fell to the ship and exploded in the middle of the Kaga's body.
"Kaga has been sunk!"
"Groups 3 and 6 are engaging the Akagi now."
The bombs went towards the Akagi's magazine and a humoumgus explosion rocked the ship and exploded.
"That's it for the Akagi!"
"We've knocked thier carrier's out nice work! Return to the Enterprise and the Yorktown immediately.", Nimitez said.
"Affirmative Fleet Admiral, let's go home boys we did a great job!", Crowe said.
The next day June 7th
"Scout ahead of the Carrier's screen for enemy activity Lieutenant.", Fleet Admiral Nimitez said while aboard the USS Enterprise.
"The Japanese didn't wait long. Zeroes incoming!", Lieutenant Crowe said while flying his Wildcat fighter.
After a giant dogfight in the air all of the enemy planes were destroyed. (Dogfight: A type of battle against planes that's this: if you attack me, I attack you. Or fighter vs. fighter.)
"Important enemy aircraft are approaching this way. Protect the Carrier's!", Nimitez said.
"Heading towards them now sir!", Crowe said.
"This is the USS Yorktown, Japanese dive-bombers incoming towards the bow of the ship!"
Japanese 'Val' dive-bombers released their payloads and the Yorktown had an explosion.
"We've took a hit. The flight deck is on fire and we have casualties aboard."
"Can you return to Midway for repairs?", Nimitez said over the radio.
"We can but it will take a while sir."
"Alright put out the fire on the flight deck and retreat to Midway when the bombers are gone."
"Sir all bombers have been destroyed!", Crowe said.
"Affirmative the Yorktown and a destroyer are heading back towards Midway but we still have enough aircraft to attack. Head toward north of the carriers screen. The bomber squadrons will follow you.",
Nimitez said.
5 minutes later.
"Sir we have found an enemy 'flat-top'.", Crowe said. (Nickname for an Aircraft-Carrier)
"We have finally found the Hiryu! Attack it now!"
"Affirmative approaching target.!"
"Bombs away Lieutenant!", One of the bomber leaders said.
The bombs went through the Hiryu's flight deck and exploded inside the ship. The carrier was destroyed and fires were everywhere on the ship.
"Sir the enemy flat-top has been sunk!", Crowe said.
"Nice job return to base right now.", Nimitez said.
"Affirmative. Admiral it's June 7th and do you know what think has happened during this entire battle for Midway?"
"What is it Lieutenant?"
"It's been six months and I think Pearl Harbor has been avenged by us."
The Battle of Midway was a fierce fought battle. The Americans thought that they were going to loose this battle but they had luck with them. Their pilots did a strenuous job for defending Midway against the Japanese. The American dive-bombers sunk the 4 Japanese carriers that were in this battle.
