Rehabilitation Is Magic

Princess Chrysalis stepped into the throne room. She felt the atmosphere stiffen immediately. The tastes of fear and apprehension struck her emotion glands immediately.

“You summoned me, Princesses?”

Celestia nodded, and Luna waved away the guards and scribes nearby. The room emptied quickly.

“Yes,” Celestia said. “We captured one of the...rogue changelings who attacked the wedding. The ones in league with your doppelganger.”

“And?”

Celestia glanced at Luna. “We wanted to consult you about what to do with them.”

“Surely you have a plan already?” Chrysalis asked.

“We do,” said Luna “We had planned to interrogate them, but there may be another way to handle it.”

“We could use mental magic to make them more agreeable to us. If a changeling like yourself helped imprint some of your memories on them, it might make them more sympathetic to us.”

Chrysalis stiffened. “It seems a little...underhanded.”

Celestia nodded. “Yes, but if it helps protect my kingdom, it is a sacrifice that must be made. If you do not want to help, I will respect your wishes.”

Celestia had always been good at masking her emotions. Chrysalis opened her mouth to refuse, but a pang of guilt shot through her. Disappointing her mentor, her confidant, her lover, it made her feel ill.

“Of course I’ll help,” Chrysalis said, without quite meaning to. “It is for the good of the kingdom, after all.”

Celestia smiled. “Thank you, my faithful ward. I’ll meet you in the dungeon, I must prepare some spells beforehand. The guard will show you the cell.”

Chrysalis bowed and turned to leave. She paused; for a moment, she had gotten the distinct feeling that she was doing something reprehensible, disgusting. She shook her head and continued walking. If Celestia approved, it couldn’t possibly be that bad.

The door closed. Celestia sighed. “You haven’t told me what you think, sister.”

Luna took a sip of her tea. “We discussed it already.”

“That was in the context of politics and security and...and fear.” Celestia sunk into her throne. “I should not have had Twilight and Cadance in the meeting. They might have clouded my decision.” Celestia turned to Luna. “You haven’t told me what you think, outside that context.”

Luna took a sip of her tea again. “You want my personal view on the matter?” She set her teacup in its saucer, and rested them on the end table. “I know you spent a long time forging all those fake memories, took great pains to individualize them from the imprints you used.” Luna turned to Celestia. “But in my opinion, it would have been more merciful to seal her in a statue.”

Luna stood up. “And to be frank, the intimate way in which you siphon her magic has not escaped my notice.” She turned to Celestia. “But I suppose if the guilt can be borne, the results are tactically palpable.”

Luna walked down the steps. “I’ll take my leave, sister. I imagine you must prepare for your...reformation.”
