I went to my first con as my own design. Then encounter this cool merchant cosplaying as, who else, the merchant from Resident Evil and he just so happens to have the last item I need at a reasonable price. Convenient? Yes. Awesome? Also yes. So I pay for it, then all of a sudden the lights go out... for me anyways. Now I'm in an anthro version of Equestria with the powers I have thought of for my character. What can possibly go wrong!
