Chapter One
If you're reading this then you probably have some sort of idea of who I am. Therefore, you are somepony who is interested in, or perhaps just stumbling upon, the only story I can truly call my own.
My name is Lightning Flash, which I guess might give some insight into how destiny expected me to shape the world. No easy task, high chance of failure, and yet, I'm not sure I'd swap that raw, youthful ambition for anything Equestria has to offer. It is mine and I own it.
I wasn't always so driven, however.
I was born in Trottingham and lived there for most of my young life. My brother, Storm Flash, and I loved to dare each other and we were in constant competition: especially, for him at least, when flying was concerned. I remember he used to talk of joining the Royal Guard, an older boy's dream my Mother used to say, sometimes forgetting her little foal was nearly sixteen when he first realised his dream. Maybe it was because she was an earth pony, or maybe just too timid, but she never wanted us to pursue aggressive careers, or even pursue careers aggressively. She loved art and loved a pony who educated.
Who'd have thought such hooflums could have been born to such a gentle pair as Mr. & Mrs. Flash?
I feel they brought it on themselves when they called us Lightning and Storm.
At the age of seven I learnt to fly. I didn't think much of it back then being so young, though I don't remember thinking much of anything until high school. By that time, Storm had run off to join the Royal Guard and that really hit me as the first time I experienced intense emotion. I felt abandoned, betrayed by his selfish fixation on what I had always assumed was just a fantasy. It hurt, but I did my best to shoulder the pain and I tried to move on. My parents seemed to have the same idea because no more than a few months passed before we were packing up our lives to go to Manehattan. There I found a taste for art and athletics, and a liking for girls.
Actually, I found my true passion in life while trying to impress a girl. Don't ask me to recite the specifics, they have long been suppressed. No, it the generalities that I find to be more significant in this case. For I gave up my pursuit for female affection and found a passion for volitation in the same. Foalish. Mistake.
Or, to put it another way, I simply began to live up to my ill-chosen name.....
