Living with the Sparkles
Starry's Fever
Load Full StoryNext ChapterFlash was awoken from his slumber by a loud distressed wail and sat bolt upright. For a moment he was confused as to what time it was, then noted that it was still pitch black outside so it must have been the middle of the night. The room was dim and covered with shadows, but Flash could just make out the silhouette of his wife and distraught two month old Starry in her hooves, trying her best to calm her with a worried expression on her face.
Flash frowned, worried, and got up to join his anxious wife and child. As his wife turned towards him, he noticed the uneasy look etched on her face making his stomach churn with worry.
"Is Starry alright? She's not sick is she?" Flash asked her nervously, seeing the slight flush in his filly's face as well as her distressed cries. He put a gentle hoof to his filly's forehead and was taken aback by the warmth he felt there.
Twilight looked at her husband helplessly and shifted the filly in her hooves trying to soothe her, but it was no good. Starry was ill and it was up to the young couple to help her the best they could.
"Has she just got a fever? Do you think she's in pain as well?" Flash asked her nervously as he listened to his daughter's whimpers, praying that his little filly wasn't in pain.
Twilight shook her head to Flash's relief. "No I don't think she is in pain, but you know what fevers are like, it makes you feel awful. Especially if you've never had one before," Twilight said, a hint of worry still in her voice.
"She was fine when I put her to bed though" Flash replied, watching the filly whimpering in her mother's hooves.
Twilight gave Flash a sad smile. "That's the thing with kids; they can be fine one hour and off the next," Twilight said. Flash could tell by her voice that she was worried, but she was putting on an act to hide it.
Flash placed a foreleg around Twilight's shoulders ad gave her a reassuring kiss on her forehead, making her smile appreciatively and lay her head on his neck while trying to rock Starry at the same time. Flash always knew when she needed support or comfort, and for that she was grateful.
"Maybe she just has a bug or something? Foals get sick like this often right?" suggested Flash hopefully as he felt his daughter's forehead again and found it wasn't as hot as he originally thought, but still warm.
Twilight nodded. "Yeah they can be, I think. Seeing her like this is worse than I thought it would ever be. She sounds so miserable," Twilight says sadlyvand Flash rubbed her shoulders gently in reassurance.
"Could we get her some medicine?" Flash asks, but he looked to the floor when Twilight shook her head.
"She's to young," She replied, "At her age, the best we can do is try to cool her down with a wet cloth and hope she sleeps it off." Hearing the foal whimper again, she cuddled Starry closer to her body with a soft coo.
Flash sighed, but agreed to Twilight's judgement; she was to young to drink the medicine, but that didn't make Flash feel less hopeless on what to do.
"Why don't you go downstairs and get a cold cloth for Starry's head?" Twilight suggested. "It's better than nothing at least. Take Pepper with you-" Twilight added, with a nod towards the dog in the room, who seemed to be pacing around, "-she's as edgy as you are, and that's not helping anyone."
Flash nodded and gave the still whimpering filly a gentle nuzzle, before gestering to Pepper to come with him. Pepper looked at Starry nervously, not wanting to leave her, but followed his owner downstairs nonetheless, leaving Twilight alone for the moment with the sick little filly.
Upon reaching the lower level of the house, Flash proceeded to get a cold cloth for his daughter's head, hoping that this strategy would at least give the little filly some relief from the fever making her feel so unhappy. Flash felt useless in the fact that he couldn't do much for the little filly, considering her age, and Pepper nudged his owner in an effort to calm him, making Flash smile gratefully at his friend.
Flash suddenly heard Twilight give a yelp from the bedroom, and he and Pepper both froze. Why had Twilight yelped like that? Then Twilight's voice came from the bedroom.
"Er, Flash could you come back up here please!?" Twilight called out in a pleading voice. Flash's face instantly paled, thinking of the worst, and he and Pepper bolted back upstairs, where Twilight was holding Starry a little further away from her body than she had been when they'd left the room, with a look of revulsion fixed on her face. Flash was about to ask what was wrong, when he suddenly saw exactly what was causing Twilight's behavior.
Starry seemed to have been sick. She had thrown up all over Twilight, and Twilight was beginning to look slightly nauseous herself.
Pepper shuddered and stuck his tongue out at the mess on Twilight before retreating form the room. If there was one thing the dog wouldn't want to stick around for, it was vomit, and this more than the german shepard ever wanted to see, regardless who made it. Flash couldn't blame the dog for her quick exit as he himself cringed before giving out a sympathetic laugh at the scene in front of him.
"Oh sweet Celestia, what a mess! Are you two alright?" Flash asked gently as he went over to investigate.
Twilight glared daggers towards her husband. "Do I look alright Flash?" she asked him in disgust, "I've just been thrown up on!" A look of revulsion came over her face as she looked down at her soiled fur. "Ugh...It's everywhere," she shuddered as she not to look at the mess.
Flash snorted, but this just caused Twilight to get more irritated than before. She wasn't in the mood to see the funy side of it, when she was the one who was covered in their daughter's mess.
"Oh, I'm glad you find it funny," Twilight said, "But do you think you can take Starry before I add to the mess as well?"
Flash quickly shut up, and gave his wife an apologetic look. "Sorry, I know it's not funny; it's just the look on your face was priceless! Here," Flash held out his hooves for the filly, "Give me Starry, I'll clean her up so you can get cleaned up" Flash said as Twilight passed a calmer Starry to Flash trying not to throw up herself.
"Now if you excuse me, need to go clean up before this get's any bigger," Twilight replied quickly as she rushed to the bathroom.
Flash quickly turned his attention back to his baby filly, who was still whimpering a little, but was a lot calmer now, and when Flash placed his hoof to her forehead, he was relieved to find that it was cooler than before, but it was still a fever at present.
"You seem better Starry," Flash noted with relief, "Obviously whatever was in your system, you got out; even if it was all over your mummy. Have to admit though, it was a good shot," Flash said in amusement as he carefully cleaned the remaining mess from his daughter's face before changing her diaper and sitting down in the rocking chair with her cuddled in his loving hooves, where Starry looked up at her daddy, slowly calming down despite the last lingering fever.
Flash heard a noise at the door and noticed Pepper peeking through the open door, obviously wondering if it was safe to come in, and Flash chuckled.
"You're all clear bud, Starry is feeling better," Flash said cheerfully as the dog came back into the room, joining the father and daughter by the rocking chair. Pepper nudged Starry and felt the slightly cooler temperature of her head and gave a goofy dog smile at his owner.
"Yeah, she's still warm, but she seems to be doing better" Flash said with a smile. "You can go back to bed if you want. I think she'll be alright for the night," Flash added reassuringly to his dog who nudged one of his legs before returning to his bed.
Turning his attention back to his little filly who was still awake due to her warm head. He picked up the cold cloth he had set down after he had taken Starry and put it on her forehead. Starry recoiled a little at the sudden change in temperature, but quickly relaxed, making Flash smile warmly at her.
"Does that feel better sweetheart? It's no fun being sick is it?" Flash said softly as he watched his daughter's eyes slowly begin to close as her father rocked her gently, keeping the cold cloth on her head and after a few minutes the baby filly had finally returned to sleep, still a little warm but on the mend.
Flash smiled lovingly at his little foal and gave her a gentle kiss on the cheek, careful not to wake her, before standing up from the walking chair; thinking it might be time to put her back to bed when Twilight came back into the room, looking a lot less green than before.
"How is she?" asked Twilight gently as she walked over to them and smiled at seeing Starry sleeping peacefully in her husband's hooves.
Flash smiled. "She's doing better. I think whatever she had is out of her system now, so she should be able to sleep off the rest of the fever. How do you feel?" Hiccup asked her quietly.
Twilight shuddered. "Better now that it isn't all over my fur," Twilight said in disgust as she picked up Starry with her magic and placed her in her cradle, gently removing the wet cloth off her head and placed a light blanket on top of the sleeping filly, before turning to Hiccup with a small smile.
"We'll just let her sleep that off now," said Twilight quietly as she moved away from the cradle, and Flash placed a foreleg on her back giving his wife a sheepish smile as she looked at him.
"I'm sorry that I laughed earlier by the way Twilight," Flash told her apologetically. "I know it wasn't funny considering what was going on. I just couldn't help it when I saw your face, it was priceless!" Flash grinned as Twilight kissed him on the cheek, giving him an understanding smile.
"It's fine Flash, I know you didn't mean it," Twilight said, causing Flash to let out a sigh of relief. "But-" she continued, causing the smile on Flash's face to fall, "-next time Starry is sick, I'll let you be the bucket, then let me know how funny it is," Twilight said calmly with a look in Flash's direction.
Flash's face instantly paled.
