Chapter One; Family Outing and Answers
“Hey mom, aunt Tia I was wondering..... Could we..... I don’t know..... Have like a family night or something? I know you two are busy with alot but..... I’d like to spend more time..... More free time doing something fun with the both of you. With no responsibilities and no duties.” The question comes after mom finishes raising a half moon. The whole process while still enjoyable, doesn’t stir me as it used to, leaving me sitting on my haunches with head slightly lowered. Both celestial sisters turn and look down at me, their expressions neutral as they sit on my sides.
Luna is the first to give me a hug as she glances at Celestia before speaking. "And how long have you been wanting this my little moon?”
“About a week I guess. If you can’t then I understand, would be nice to have though.”
Before I can stand or do anything Tia grabs me in her wing as well and looks at me. Her features stern. “You know what you’re asking is something very serious to even consider. The effects it would have on Equestria as a whole without the leadership of me and Luna.” While speaking I can’t help but cower a bit, feeling dejected at her words and tone. After a minute of silence she continues. “However, I think its worth the risk to spend time with family. And it could be a good thing to be able to take a step back and have a break from our royal duties.”
“Sister, I don’t think it was a good prank to play on Moon. Though I do agree constant routine of dealing with our royal duties has become not only boring but stressful as well. This break will be most welcome.” With a squeal I jump up and give them both a hug tightly. “However it is time for bed my Moon. I shall see you in the morning if my duties don't take to much time.” Both Tia and mom escort me to my room and after my preparations are finished they both take time to tuck me in. Before I fall asleep Midnight flies in through the opened window and perches above my head after giving his round of loving nuzzles.
As my normal morning rituals end I can’t help but notice something is different, both mom and auntie are acting really strange but keep silent. The one hint I have is how secretive they are when I approach them, catching the slightest hint of a message being sent. But despite my questions they remain silent. After breakfast they go to their seperate rooms, leaving me alone in the throne room. After a length of time they return, minus their royal accessories. “Hey auntie, don’t you have some function or meeting or something to attend? Why aren’t you dressed for whatever?”
“Its a suprise Moon.” With that said a blindfold covers my eyes from behind and a wing is draped across my back. “Trust us Moon, and no peaking.” Those are the last words I hear before earmuffs are tightly placed around my ears, leaving me both blind and deaf. Hesitantly I follow the wing, trusting both mom and auntie as I fight to keep from pulling them off.
'So Whiny, what kind of torture are you gonna subject me to today huh?’ Nightmare mocks as it takes form, glaring at me from behind her cage.
'You can mock me all you want Nightmare, but I remember you made me an offer a while back. I don’t know how much I can trust you but if you want my trust than continuing to mock me is not the way to earn it.’ My retort only earns an angry snort from her. Despite myself I lean against the bars, staring at her. 'I have no idea why you are only attracted to power and negative emotions, but I do wish you’d change.’
Unaware of my inner dialog the wing finally stops after what seems like hours. ‘I’m going to remove you earmuffs and blindfold but I want you to keep your eyes closed until I tell you to open them ok.’ Celestia’s words break up the chat mentally, my response is an affirmative nod. Not long after both items are removed but no sounds reach my ears as I keep my eyes tightly shut. “Now Moon, open them.”
Eagerly I open my lids, the sights greeting me is pure shock. Beyond Luna and Tia I notice we're at a theme park, both sisters smiling happily. “You asked for a day of fun, well hopefully the fun will be doubled or possibly even more.” Speechless I can only hug them as mom speaks first. Its apparent the sight of the sisters is obviously a rare thing as the ongoers stop and stare at us, but I’m oblivious to it all.
“Anything you want to do, no matter the expense or how silly it might be.” With the reigns I expected removed I look about for a few seconds, then a smile curls my lips.
“Hmm, alright.” Eagerly I make my way towards the nearest coaster, both mom and auntie giggling as I try to contain myself. I'm barely able to refrain from galloping towards the ride, watching in anticipation. While I am anxious and curious about the ride the fact that both Luna and Celestia have agreed to do this and on such short notice make my smile so wide it almost hurts. My heart beats rapidly in the joy of the situation and I give both the solar and lunar regents a quick loving nuzzle. “Seems like the ride is set up to allow three ponies to be in a row. Who wants the outside, middle and inside?”
“where do you want to be Moon?”
“Hm, the inside seems like it might be the safest since its closest to the ground. The outside then will be the most dangerous, and the middle would be the halfway point. I guess I'll try the outside then.” As we get near the entrance a pop and shimmer of light appears next to us, a familiar Draconiquis arrives.
“So, little Moody has learned to flip around her constant frown it seems. I have heard what you've recently been dealing with, how are doing now?” Discord hands Celestia a summoned flower bouquet as he speaks to me, bowing low to the sisters. “You ladies are looking so very happy today, is there room in your little ensemb for a fourth?”
“Hey Discord. I've been doing good, in fact so far this day couldn’t get any better since I finally get to be with both mom and auntie outside of the castle and get to do something fun with them.” The appearance of Discord and our short conversation causes the ponies around us stare. A few in contempt but the majority are just awed. “I did want to spend the day with just mom and aunt Tia, but I’ll think it over on the ride. In the mean time I’m sure you could get a spot in this group of riders.” I finish just as we're motioned forward after our long wait. Both Celestia and Luna refuse to be advanced to the head of the line on account of their status. The hand shows me how to get into the harness and secures the three of us once we're all set.
“Anxious Moon?” Luna decides to take the middle spot and looks at me with a grin as we're lifted into the air, our legs dangling below us. A long arm holds the slightly swinging carriage as it begins to spin slowly.
“Very much so mom, how about you?” I have to speak up as the spinning begins to quicken. The wind whips our manes and tails into a wavy line behind us, causing me to laugh which turns into a gasp as the carriage swings a bit more forcefully and we begin to lift onto our sides. Nervously I watch as we are lifted completely onto our left sides and create a ninety degree angle with the arm, the ground rushing rapidly next to us. As I get a grip on myself I stretch out my legs as if I had wings. “WOOOHHOOOOOO, FASTER!” Despite the rushing winds in my ears I can barely hear the two next to me giggle as they watch me.
In to short of time the ride ends and we're back on tera firma. The thrill and joy still coarsing through my veins as we regroup with Discord. “I guess for now you can join us as long as you don’t cause any trouble.”
“I wouldn’t dare dream of it, I'll be a perfect little angel.” Before he says angel he turns suprisingly into Fluttershy’s pet rabbit. Earning an eye roll before we push on towards the rows and rows of games. As we get ready to approach a booth with a stack of five bottles in a pyramid I notice somethings wrong. “Hey, where's mom? she was with us a minute ago?”
Only answering in a huff Celestia stalks off, leaving me to nervously follow with Discord walking next to me. “Oh, seems like your mom couldn’t fight off her addiction. I wonder which one it is now. What do you think Celestia? maybe she should learn some restraint from you?” His normally joking tone turns somewhat serious only increases my nervousness.
“What addiction Discord? I didn’t know mom’s..... Hooked on something, is Cele.....”
“Do not answer her Discord, she'll find out soon enough.” Her rebuke to the chaos spirit worries me even more, leaving me hoping that this day won’t be ruined.
“Oh sorry Titi, I forgot you don’t want anypony to find out about your *ahem* thing for..... Cakes..... Oh my, did I say that out loud, do forgive me Celestia.” All Discord does is laugh and grin as auntie stops, her tail gives an annoyed twitch before she resumes. Upon entering the tent we find mom sitting before an arcade game, her expression serious which causes Celestia to clear her throat loudly. “I have always wondered how your flank has gotten so big, its cause you can’t stop can you?” As I look at mom aunt Tia turns to face Discord, her expression is one of terror as Celestia’s ear and left eyelids twitch, glaring daggers at him.
The rest of the days goes by without incident, though the knowledge of both mom’s and aunties’ addictions are mentally filed. A part of me already wants to call Discord and see about setting up a prank.
The next few days go by quickly and routinely. Its not till the day before my next visit with Sunshine I work up enough courage to have a serious chat with Twilight, Celestia and mom over the events of the fight in the castle ruins. Due to their duties the explanation is set for after sunset and in Celestia’s own room. My decission and what I learned are eating away at my nerves slowly but surely, eventually forcing me to go to the kitchen and grab an entire cake. Its at this time I realize that since the treaty was finalized I have not seen nor heard from Prince Blueblood. Which worries me as well as improving my mood.
Due to the requested time to chat both auntie and mom decide to perform their duties from Celestia’s own eloquent balcony. As the trio settle after the sun is lowered and the rising of the moon I take a deep breath with my back turned to them, trying to steady my nerves before turning. Twilight sits close to Tia on her left side. “I..... I remember you had a question about our fight Twilight..... And its time I answered them..... *sigh*..... First, I didn’t answer you back then because..... I was both scared and didn’t trust you back then. But now..... I don’t know if I've earned your trust yet or not, but you have earned mine, so here it goes.”
With a deep breath I begin, thinking back on what I've learned both before and after the fight, also making sure the Nightmare is securely locked away. “First off Nightmare Moon found a way to protect herself from the effects of the Elements of Harmony. But she needed me to cast the spell..... It was very draining and needed alot of power and the proper dispell to cancel it for a short time. I needed the distraction caused by both the mixture of the power of the elements and my shadows so Nightmare Moon couldn’t see my true intentions or cancel my spell.”
“How..... How long before the fight did you plan that? and what happened to the remnant? I thought it would have been destroyed when Nightmare Moon was defeated?” Twilight’s questions brings a harsh smile to my lips, revealing my fangs a bit.
“You remember back when I was in the hospital and the remnant seperated from me, well since then. As for why the remnant returned to me instead of going away..... Well..... From what I can figure out..... Since it was a part of me since I was conceived and since I lived through the fight it was able survive through me though it took a while for it to regain its ability to speak to me. I’m also sure you're curious as to why the remnant was able to split from me.” I pause just long enough to take a breath and allow them to nod. “As far as I am able to tell the only reason it was able to break free was due to how close Nightmare Moon was to becoming fully formed. Was there any other questions you have?”
“Yes I do. How was the Nightmare able to find a way to find a spell to cancel out the elements and do you know if that knowledge is readily available?” Twilight is the first to speak up, extremely concerned.
“I can’t remember where the spell was found and I have no idea how it was able to know about it. All I can remember is that it was a very old building far to the east, beyond the borders of Equestria. So I’d have to guess its very hard to get to. I can show you the spells if you want. But for ease of purpose if the spell does become known I’m the best way to get it.”
“For now I don’t see a reason why the spell should become knowledgeable. And we'll see about learning the spell later. I am wondering how were you able to hide Luna from myself and Discord?” Celestia responds after a minute of thinking.
“I was able to learn how to travel to a..... Not sure how to explain it..... Guess it was a plane or something. But it was a shadowy version of Equestria. It was something the Nightmare taught me as well.” My gaze falls to mom as I wait, wondering what her question can be.
“How are things going between you and your guest?”
“It can be stressful and annoying at times mom, I'll admit. But I think I’m finally beginning to understand it. Its still gonna take alot of time before I can work with it. Any other questions?”
“Yes, though this doesn’t have anything to do with the current topic. Are you looking forward to your birthday coming up my little moon?” The lunar sister asks in an attempt to lighten the mood with her smile.
“I..... I guess, though I still don’t think its a..... Good idea. I just don’t feel..... Comfortable with it yet.” The change in topic lowers my somewhat neutral attitude. Leaving me to wonder how I can get out of this without lying.
“Well its to late to cancel it Moonshade, though the reason why the ball is being thrown has been kept hush.” Celestia comments as I answer, looking apologetic.
“Know what, I have an idea mom, auntie and we don’t even have to cancel the stupid ball off. How about we have just a small party instead? You, mom, twilight and gang and Lily with her friends. For the ball I'll still attend but..... Instead of being for my birthday..... Which once others find out alot might leave anyway..... Have it for something else instead.” My counter offer has me look up at the sisters hopefully while Twilight stares at us.
“You still think that alot of ponies don’t like you Moon?” the question from Twilight is met by a weak smile.
“Yeah, they don’t show it when I'm with you, Tia or mom. But when I’m alone or nearly alone..... You should see the looks they still give me..... They're of either disgust or fear, except for the few I've met during the treaty work for the zebras.” As I mention this I struggle to keep from sinking under the wave of depression wanting to overwhelm me. “Maybe this ball could..... Help me improve my standings aomewhat with others.” My words draw helpful grins as we create a four pony hug and break apart, going our own ways.

“Hey Rainbow Dash, I hope I didn’t interupt anything.” As the rainbow maned speedster lands, clearly somewhat upset, I can’t help but wonder if I made the right move. Its been two days since I explained things to mom, Celestia and Twilight and both days Celestia or mom inquired about some of what I told them, trying to get me to remember exactly where certain things were found or if I could remember certain things. Today I was able to get a reprieve and decide to learn something new.
“Uh yeah..... So whats up Moonshade?” I can tell she’s slightly annoyed but is trying to hide it. Which is, from what I understand, a suprise from the brash and arrogant mare.
“Well..... I've sorta learned how to..... Create wings out of shadows, see.” In a few seconds a pool of shadows gather along my sides and form into wings resembling mom’s but matching my coat color. The move causes Rainbow to jump back startled. I wait for her to resettle before I continue. “I think..... Having wings, even fake ones, would be less unsettling for other ponies over my gaseous form and..... I’d like if you could teach me how to fly properly.”
“Soo, you created fake wings. Do you think they are able to work properly like real wings should?” Obviously she’s very skeptical of this idea as she looks over my wings carefully, even going as far as testing their solidness and flexibility. “Hm..... I guess I can help you. For starters you need to loosen them up. Your wings are the right size and placed in the proper positions, but there are way to stiff.” After complying she reexamines them. Finally after four more attempts she approves of how the wings are shaped and their ability to move. “Now lets see if you can get them to flap together.”
For the next hour we just stand on my balcony, even Midnight joins in as all that gets worked on is syncronizing my wings. “So..... Keep working on that, once you got the movements down I'll help you. Soon you'll be blazing around the sky if your fake wings can hold up. Now I uh..... Gotta go and..... Help AJ.”
“You like her don’t you, why not ask her out?” My question causes her to blush fiercely before she takes off, a rainbow trailing behind her as she heads back to Ponyville. With a giggle I continue to practice for another hour before calling it quits. I grab my saddlebags and my journals along with my art supplies, humming softly. Immediately I’m joined by Solar and her squad as I make my way towards the garden. “Hey Solar, I..... I've been thinking. How do you think a trial combat session sounds? Just you and me..... See if I can..... Keep from succumbing to the other side of me.”
“Well its about time you gathered up the nerve to try again. But this time there won’t be any giving up princess. If you want to do this then you have to promise you'll give it your all, understand.” Her tone conveys both relief and anxiousness at the upcoming sparring session. “I'll see about getting the practice arena booked for us next week.”
“Alright, I promise I will give it my best Solar. Hopefully I can keep myself under control.”
“I know you can.”
With a smile and nod I settle down upon a bench and begins to fill out my journals, noting that I need to get new ones soon I begin to fill them out. Noting how much cooler it has been getting as I work, three of the guards mock battle eachother as the lieutenant stands watch. Midnight decides to fly off to the nearest fruit tree and begins to feast, his muzzle soon covered in fruit chunks and juices. The peaceful surroundings bring a genuine smile to my lips as I go to work.
The time seems to slip quickly away as I spend most of my day in the garden. After finishing the journals I spend some time playing with Midnight as well as Solar and her guards. Finally we end up going back inside in time to meet the rulers for dinner. “Hey mom, auntie, guess what I learned to do.”
“I have no clue my little moon, did you learn how to finally clean your room or keep it clean?” Mom’s response causes me to blush a little, knowing that she’s right. My living space is definately not very well kept and I can’t seem to bring myself around to clean it.
“I don’t think thats it Luna. I hear its such a jungle in there the maids refuse to go inside lest they become lost forever or eaten by some unkown thing.” Celestia adds her two bits with a laughing smile.
'I really need to bring myself around to atleast making a dent in the mess.’ My mental admonishment brings me a slight smile. “Nope, I've learned how to give myself wings, see?” Before I answer I stand up and gather the shadows to me and form the same pair of wings which I had earlier, matching their proportions and flexibility. “Rainbow Dash is even gonna teach me to fly once I get used to flapping and moving them in unison.” To emphasize my point one wing is folded against my side as the other is halfway extended. When I try to fold it the other wing pompfs out to its fullest extent, the little show causes the sisters to laugh.
“I know you'll get used to it soon enough Moonshade, just don’t give up.” With mom’s word of encouragement I sit down and resume eating, keeping my wings going as I still struggle to get the hang of them.
“If you have no special plans for tomorrow Moonshade I’d be honored if you can join me and help me perform some royal duties. I know things have been rough for you, but me and Luna have decided that we need to start talking to you about your future. I know its fun but you can’t just spend time playing around inside the castle.” Celestia’s words cause me to look up at her, open mouthed and in complete shock. “However you don’t have to give us an answer now . We shall you give you some time. Whatever you wish to try we shall support you one hundred percent.”
The subject leaves me completely silent as I think it over. 'I never would have made that demand of you Moonshade, in fact I would have given you complete command of my forces and made you my second.’ The remnant’s voice sneers at me, either to taunt or try to entice I have no idea.
“Well Midnight, seems I have something serious to think about, and that means I won’t have as much time to spend with you as I used to. You'll cope won’t you?” An affirmative chitter and wing hug from him earns him a kiss on top of his head before I flop onto my bed, front legs outstretched to my sides and hind legs bent so they're still planted on the floor. Mom’s moon already risen a half hour ago.
It takes me about a month to start getting the hang of synchronizing the wings, also during the elapsed time I also give possible jobs a thorough thinking, already having tried a few but failed, some spectacularly. It wasn’t until my latest visit with doctor Sunshine that I began to inquire about how to become a psychologist. Also it has seemed that Rarity and Applejack have heard of my dilema and offered to have me try out helping at the farm or being a model.
“Hey Rainbow, how are you?” As expected the rainbow speedster arrives not only twenty minutes late but also tired, a big yawn escapes her muzzle as she lands in front of me. “I think I got the wings finally synchronized, see.” To show I flap, extend and fold them. Both wings moving in complete unison, causing me to proudly smile.
“I’m doing good I guess. Thats cool Moonshade, now, watch how I take to the air and do what I do.” With a bunching of her legs and a powerful kick she times it to where her wings begin flapping at the height of her jump. “Now you do it, peace of cake.” Despite her assurances I crash to the ground on twenty attempts. The last crash while painful also showed some improvement and wasn’t as hard as the earlier attempts. “Heh heh, you're starting to get the hang of it. I..... Gotta go, keep practicing and you'll get it. Then you'll be speeding throw the skies, it'll take you ten seconds flat, see ya Moonshade.”
The next day is Nightmare Night and despite my wishes to not celebrate the occasion both mom and aunt Celestia have finally badgered me into going. Which is why I’m somewhat grumpy as I arrive via royal chariot, touching down in front of Carousel Boutique. Most of the ponies out and about stop and stare, expecting either princess Celestia or Luna. the majority of them turn their expressions sour as they recognize me and give me a wide berth. I shrug it off as I knock at the door to Rarity’s who promptly answers.
“Hey, I've been thinking. I don’t think it’d be to bad of an experience to atleast try modeling, if you're still willing and neec the help. But I’m also here cause I've sorta been coerced by mom and Celestia and I need a costum for tonight.”
“Well darling I don’t need the help now but come closer to Hearth’s Warming Eve I could use somepony to help show off my work, and I’d be honored if you can help. As for your costume what did you have in mind?” She asks as we enter her work space. A trio of blurs dash past us but come to a crashing halt as the spot me.
“Hi Moonshade, hope you're doing good today, looking forward to Nightmare’s Night princess?” The girls speak in unison with smiles.
“Hm..... I don’t really know. I guess the idea of Nightmare Night is to be scary right, so lets try that. And hello to you as well girls. No I’m not really looking forward to it, though this is my first Nightmare Night I'll be celebrating.”
“Ideeaaa!” In a rush Rarity hurries and begins to go to work, leaving me alone with the girls.
“Are you serious, you've never celebrated Nightmare Night before?” Sweetie Belle’s squeaky voice comes out full of shock.
“But Nightmare Night is like..... The coolest holiday ever. How could you not have celebrated it when you were filly?” Scootaloo adds, her wings buzzing as she hovers a little off the ground.
“Well, I don’t know how much you know about me, but I am older than I look.”
“How much older are ya princess Moonshade?” Apple Bloom’s question brings a sour smile to my lips, I begin to debate if I should answer or not, but her look makes my decision for me.
“I’m a thousand and five years old Apple Bloom, when I was a filly we didn’t have Nightmare’s Night. And please, don’t call me princess, Moon or Moonshade will do.” The answer stuns the little fillies, leaving them stuttering. About what I couldn’t guess, their looks cause me to giggle.
“Ah know, why don’ we show prin- Moonshade around tonight? Show'er what Nightmare Night is all about.” Apple Bloom’s offer comes after a few minutes. Eagerly the others agree.
“CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS NIGHTMARE NIGHT GUIDES..... YAY!”
“Shh girls, Rarity is working. Besides I don’t..... Think its a good....”
“Well I think its a marvelous idea darling, the girls need a chaperone tonight and you are basically under orders to spend some time having fun tonight. It shall do you good Moonshade.” At Rarity’s interruption the girls hug me with smiles and bounce around in circles, babbling nonsense. “By the way your costume is finished, come try it on.”
With a sigh of defeat I follow her. The costume is done in blacks and reds, including a very fancy cape and old styled clothes. “Wait, you decided to dress me up as a vampire Rarity? really?” The style finally hits me as I think back on a rare show I caught with Twilight and girls.
“Of coarse dear. With your unique look it fits you perfectly, go and try it on.” With an eye roll I put the costume on. As usual it fits perfectly, and has no movement restrictions. 'I think I'll try this out. Its no suprise the costume suites me so well, and Rarity did make this for free. No sense in throwing away her efforts.’ The sight in the mirror I’m looking at is suprising as I turn and pose, checking the costume out in different angles. “Thank you Rarity for the costume and the chance to try something unique.”
“Its nothing darling. Now stop back here around five so you can get dressed, get your makeup on and pick up the girls, unless you want to spend some time with them now?”
“C'mon Moonshade, we want ta show ya our clubhouse. Plus sis has been wantin ta talk ta ya.” Apple Bloom is the first to enter as I remove the costume and hang it up. All Rarity does is motion me towards the door with her head and a smile, the trio of fillies follow behind me.
“Are you hungry Moonshade? Its getting close to lunch time.”
“Actually I am starting to get hungry Sweetie Belle. Should we get something to eat now, or would your family mind having me over for lunch Apple Bllom?”
“Nope, us Apples are always happy ta have friends an family over.”
“Well well, if it isn’t the three little blank flanks. What do you think their costumes are gonna be Silver Spoon?” The mocking voice comes from behind. Judging from the girl’s reactions and the voice I figure the speaker is a filly around the same age as the three I’m babysitting. “And who are you?”
“Can’t ya jus leave us alone Diamond Tiara? Why do ya gotta tease us all the time?”
I notice the girls are tensed up, ready for a fight. All I do is sigh and look at Apple Bloom. “Who are these two fillies, and why are they teasing you?” My gaze falls upon the two. The first one is pink with a white streaked purple man, a tiara sits atop her head. The pony next to her is grey with a light grey mane and she’s wearing a pair of cyan glasses and a matching necklace.
“I’m Diamond Tiara, and this is my friend Silver Spoon, who are you?” The pink filly answers, clearly a little displeased by my presence.
“Their family is very rich, has been fer a long time. They tease us because we don’ have our cutie marks yet.”
“Well you know the saying that bits ain’t everything right? No matter what you can’t buy the most important things in life, you can only earn them.” I look at the two bullies as I speak, the words directed at them as well as the girls.
“What can’t you buy with bits Moonshade?” Scootaloo’s question is also directed at the pair, earning a smile from me.
“You can’t buy love, true love. Nor can you buy true friendship, respect, manners, morals, or true happiness.” A sneer crosses Diamond Tiara's and Silver Spoon's lips at my answer. “Judging from your friendships and how much your families love you, I’d say you three are alot richer than those two. And in things that are more important than bits or material goods.” With a humph the two fillies turn and walk away arrogantly. “Alright girls, I’m starving, lets go.”

Chapter Three; Nightmare Night and Applebucking
“Hey girls, Moonshade. How'er ya'll doin?” Applejack’s warm greeting as we enter the farm house has a relaxing effect despite my growing dred at watching over these three tonight.
“Heya sis. Ya don’ have ta worry ‘bout findin us a chaperone, Moonshade agreed to watch over us tanight.” Applejack’s one raised eyebow and gaze tells me exactly what she’s thinking, making me rethink what I got myself into.
“Ya sure yer up ta it Moonshade? Mah sister an her friends can be quiet a hoofful.”
“I’m doing good Applejack thanks, and no I don’t think I’m up to it, but I got no choice. Mom, Rarity and these three have already roped me in to it.” My answer brings a round of laughs from the four, which is broken up by the sounds of hungry stomaches. "But thats not why I’m here, but first can we get some food please?”
“Sure thing, lemme guess yer here ta try yer hoof at apple buckin tomorrow right?”
“Yep, though you're gonna have to show me how its done, or can I just use magic?” As the food is set upon the table a familiar bat flies in through the window, chittering at me in admonishment. His suprise visit startles the others. “Hey sleepy head, you were the one who didn’t want to wake up today, so don’t blame me for being left behind. Oh, Applejack, girls this is Midnight.” After his chittering dressing down is finished he looks at the food longingly. “Hey, is there any chance he can eat an apple or two Applejack?”
“Hey Midnight. Ah heard ya adopted a pet from Fluttershy, so this is the lucky guy huh?” The comotion in the dinning room draws the attention of Winnona who takes immediate interest in Midnight. “Ah guess he can. But not to many apples, or Ah'll be chargin them ta the princesses.” With her consent Midnight flies off towards the nearest tree and begins to eat. “As fer yer question about apple buckin’ Ah guess ya can use magic. Ah don’ think yer strong enough ta do it properly, even if we had time ta train ya.”
“Alright, thanks Applejack. You..... Got a place for me to sleep tonight so I don’t have to fly all the way back here from Canterlot?”
“Yep, Apple Bloom'll show ya after tanight. Be ready ta wake up extra early, fair warnin’.” As the food is finally devoured the girls pull me energetically with them, a laugh from the orange coated farm mare meets my pleading look for help as I dissappear from her view.
The rest of the day blurs by. Once they settled down it was suprisingly fun. By five me and the girls enter the boutique and go our seperate ways to get into our costumes. While she’s helping me get ready Rarity gives me a two mile long list of rules. All I can do is nod, knowing I won’t be able to remember them all. “Ok girls, you three ready?” The thundering of small hooves racing down the stairs answers me and once they spot me all three of them let out a scream and scatters. 'Great, I hope I didn’t scare them to bad. And I hope I don’t scare off the other ponies, specially the foals.’
“Hey scaredy fillies, lets get going, I can see a couple groups already making their rounds.” In response the trio form up in front of me, Scootaloo dressed as Rainbow Dash in a Wonderbolts costume. Sweetie Belle is dressed as some sort of singer, including a headset microphone. As for Apple Bloom I can’t really tell what she’s supposed to be, all I know is she doesn’t look to excited about her costume which is a very formal looking gown, even her mane and tail are styled. “Ok, so whats exactly do we do on Nightmare’s Night?”
“CUTIE MARK CRUSADERS CANDY COLLECTORS..... GO!” In a surge of engery they rush out the door, leaving me to follow as Rarity watches us, giggling.
“We gotta try ta hit every house an collect candy. The goal is ta try an fill yer bucket up ta the brim at the least.” As Apple Bloom explains Scootaloo thrusts a bucket into my muzzle, which after the suprise I grasp with my magic. The force and how deep the handle went causes it to be punctured by my fangs.
“And because this your first Nightmare Night ever you get to participate Moonshade, and sorry about that.”
“Thats alright, you didn’t know my fangs are real.” The four of us begin to make our rounds as we talk. My appearance with a bucket raises eyebrows of the houses we've visited so far, but unlike the looks I previously recieved these seem more curious than anything.
“Don’t worry about it Moonshade, they find it weird that a grown mare is going around with a bucket also asking for candy with a bunch of fillies. Not alot of older ponies do it.” Sweetie Belle’s explanation seems to make sense as I look about. Only one other grown mare is going from house to house, a very large bucket dangling from her mouth.
“NIGHTMARE NIGHT, WHAT A FRIGHT, GIVE US SOMETHING SWEET TO BITE!" The montra of the night is repeated as we get to our fifth house. In suprise both Lyra and Bon Bon answer the door, their gaze falling on me and the awkwardly held bucket in my magic. A silly grin decorates my muzzle.
“Hi princess Moonshade, I didn’t know you celebrated Nightmare’s Night. How’d you get roped into escorting those girls?” Lyra recognizes me immediately with a smile while dropping some candy into the three fillies’ buckets.
“Hey Lyra, Bon Bon, how you been? And actually..... This is my first. Tuanks to mom, Applejack and Rarity I’m stuck watching these girls for the night. And thanks to Scootaloo she felt I needed a first hand experience with this night, which includes gathering candy.” My answer causes a smile on their lips as Lyra begins to levitate some candy to my bowl, but is stopped by Bon Bon.
“I don’t recall hearing the princess say the magic words. Until she does she shouldn’t get any of our treats.” I just look on in shock at Bon Bon’s words, pleading, hoping she’s joking. “We're waiting princess.”
“Please don’t make me. And please don’t call me princess, just Moon or Moonshade.” At this point the three fillies join in to encourage me. So with a sigh I mumble the words out under my breath.
“What was that Moonshade? We didn’t quite hear you.” Lyra taunts me with the dangling candy pieces. The crowd behind us blocks my exit in a semi circle as they also begin to encourage me.
“Fine..... Nightmare night, what a fright, give me something sweet to bite.” The words are heard over the crowd, but still I’m refused. In a huff I finally give in. “NIGHTMARE NIGHT, WHAT A FRIGHT, GIVE ME SOMETHING SWEET TO BITE!” As Lyra and Bon Bon smile and wink at me I can’t help but give them a mock glare, even showing some fang, earning laughs from them and the fillies. As we pass by the large crowd gives way with cheers and applause. “I'll get you three fillies back, just you wait.”
After a few hours we've covered the entire village, just in time to see a large crowd gathering in front of a large stage. Its at this point while me and the girls are in the back that I’m suprised by a visit from mom, her expression thoughtful and worried as she settles next to me. “Hey mom, whats wrong?”
“Nothing to be concerned about my little moon, enjoying yourself tonight?” Her answer is followed by a nuzzle, the entire scene is watched carefully by the three fillies in front of me. “I see you've been a chaperone and partaking in the most important part of this night.”
“Suprisingly I am. And yea I got hooked into watching these three by Rarity and Applejack.” I return her nuzzle with my own, smiling happily before I seperate from her and my expression turns serious. “Aren’t..... Aren’t you affected by what this celebration re.....”
A feather lays against my lips before I can finish my question. Zecora’s speech and tricks on stage are ignored by the two of us. “I did in the begining my daughter. But the first night I deigned to see what the celebration was about I learned what joy and happiness this night can bring to the foals and the suprise that ponies enjoy being frightened if its done properly. So I make sure that each Nightmare Night I visit a different city and spread the happiness I can bring.”
“But..... Doesn’t it sadden you to have a night named after your..... Other self?”
“No my little moon it doesn’t. In fact I find that tonight is the only blessing I have from my time as Nightmare Moon. And it is a very good blessing that has opened my eyes. Now, its time for my act soon, I shall see you later on tonight.” With a smile and kiss mom hurries away into the woods. All I can do is sit there and watch, mulling over her words.
“Hey Moon, hello..... Are you awake?” Sweetie Belle’s question snaps me out of my trance. With a quick clearing shake of my head I give her a smile.
“Yea, sorry just had something on my mind. What are we doin now?”
"We gotta go ta the statue o Nightmare Moon. Its part o the tradition, now lets git goin’.” Apple Bloom leads the way with Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo flanking me.
“We have to sacrifice some of our candy to Nightmare Moon so she won’t come and bother us for an entire year.” Scootaloo explains as we approach the statue. I can’t help but giggle as I watch the events that unfold. As the candy is begining to pile up the statue begins to move. A couple of large bolts of lightning smash into the ground while the wind picks up. Its at this time some members of the lunar guard appear, only they're supporting the iconography of Nightmare Moon.
Once everything is in place the voice of Nightmare Moon echos through the night. “This offering of candy shall be sufficient to keep me from eating YOU!” As she finishes another bright flash appears, causing the foals to scream and run away. The girls I’m watching cower behind me a little as they watch the candy being swept up by mom.
“So, that was your big performance?” I step out of the shadows with a smile, helping her gather the remaining pieces. “How can you find that fun?”
“You remember what your friends said when you first visited a carnival about being frightened?”
Her question opens up a flood of memories and I sort through them. ‘That was the best she could do when trying to impersonate me, pathetic just like you are.’
'Shut up will you, she’s not trying to actually be you. She just wants to scare the foals for some reason.’ Eventually I come across the memory I’m searching for. The task made all the more difficult as I try to ignore and push aside the ones involving the past murders and tortures that the remnant shows me.
“Yea..... Sometimes its fun to be scared, if its done properly. But still, why do it mom?”
“Because Moon, it not only shows that my night has become appreciated but it also helps me to connect with our subjects in a personal way, making it easier for them to be able to approach me.” Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo and Apple Bloom burst out of their spot as mom talks, giving her a big group hug.
“Alright mom, I think I understand a little. I need to get these three back to Rarity's, its getting late. Is there anything else happening tonight?” Despite the yawns the girls protest a little.
“Yes there are alot of games to play, when you're done you can join me in doubling the fun.” She smiles as I walk off, carrying the now sleeping fillies. The rest of the night is spent in joining mom as we play a multitude of different games and mingle in with population. Despite my desire to stay I make my way to Sweet Apple Acres after only spending an hour playing, knowing I gotta be up early tomorrow.
“Alright Moonshade, here’s the guest room ya'll be sleepin in. I know ya were out for a long time tanight but that ain’t gonna be an excuse fer not bein able to work early.” Applejack warns before going back to her own room. Without a second wasted I fall on the bed and drift happily to sleep.
All to soon morning comes, accompanied by the shouting of Applejack and the smells of fresh cooked breakfast. “C'mon Moonshade, time ta rise an shine, these apples ain’t gonna buck themselves.” I only manage to groan and swat at the noise while turning onto my other side. Unfortunately she has help and after a minute of pesting I finally wake up. Midnight gives a last chirp before leading me to the kitchen downstairs. “Mornin’ Moonshade. Hehe, ya should get a good look at yerself after wakin up, but it won’t matter. Eat heartily cause we got alot o work.”
“Morning Applejack, when you said early I shoulda known you meant early. Hay the sun isn’t even out!” I take my first look out the window, suprised that its still dark out as I dig into my plate, stuffing my belly fuller than I’d normally do. “How much work we got cut out for ourselves today?”
“We got a whole field ta try an clear. If we don’ we'll loose that part o the harvest with how cold its been gettin.” As she says that we head outside followed by Big Mac. In mostly silence we work throughout the day, even with my magic going its a hard job. Halfway through I give an attempt at trying to buck just like Applejack is. All that the attempt does is earn me a shooting pain through my hooves and a laugh from the two Apples. It takes us till dinner time when we finally finish. Though we're sweaty and tired we cleared the entire field. “Thanks fer yer help Moonshade, here’s a gift fer helpin us. Tell Celestia an Luna we said hi.” Before I leave a bucket full of apples is pushed towards me, sitting next to my full candy bucket.
“Will do Applejack, and you didn’t have to give me anything. The experience was enough, though I don’t think I'll be looking to do this for the rest of my life, but it was worth trying out, take care.” With a groan and pop of my back me and Midnight fly back to Canterlot.
Over the next week Rainbow Dash stops by for about an hour to work on my takeoff and landing skills. The landing practice while rough is still alot easier than figuring out how to take off. Once she’s happy with both she finally takes me out for a short flight around a tower, continuing to show me how to properly turn and maneuver around obstacles. The one day I don’t have flying practice I end up having an unexpected time with mom and auntie one morning which leads to us playing out in the garden. Unfortunately it leads to something terrible happening to Midnight which I fear will leave him unable to fly anymore. During my time at Fluttershy’s I meet a strange pegasus mare, something about her reminds me of myself from not to long ago. The experience of meeting her stirs something inside of me that makes me want to help her.
'Something about the event that caused Midnight to be injured is suspicious, like he was intentionally injured, but wh..... I bet it was Blueblood or one of his cronies.’ The thought angers me as I meetup with mom and Tia. A freshly bandaged Midnight is still nestled in mane.
‘You should teach him a lesson. He can’t hurt something you care for without repercussions. Find a way to hurt him as he hurt you.’ I can feel the remnant’s reaction to my anger over the situation even as I try to calm down.
'As much as I’d like for him to be guilty I don’t know that for certain. It won’t be fair to accuse him without proof.’ I retort, not really paying attention to the guards or other ponies around me as I finally enter the mostly filled throne room. A deep sigh releases a touch of my anger as I sit next to auntie. My stiffened posture, the way I entered and my barely contained snarl point to my self contained anger. Aunt Tia’s only reaction at the moment is a raised eyebrow and a concerned look.
After a whispered word to her commanding officer she returns her attention to the line of ponies, the words exchanged are barely registered as I work on calming down. “Ok ponies, the princesses need to have a private word, please exit the room.” With loud grumbles and complaints the room empties, to include the guards.
“What is wrong Moon that has you so upset?” The question breaks through my concentration and instead of just answering I show her Midnight, specifically the his injured wing. “When did this happen? What happened?”
With a deep breath I can feel myself slightly calm down. “It happened shortly after you and mom left me and Midnight in the garden. As for how I have a suspicion but no proof. I hope he will be able to fly again, gonna take him back to Fluttershy's in a moonth to have it reevaluated.”
“Who do you suspect caused it? Are you sure that it wasn’t an accident, that he didn’t get his wing caught on something?”
“I won't tell you cause it won’t be fair to accuse without proof. As for how I know it isn't an accident, well watch this.” I show her what I saw in that moment. Midnight is playing in a clear open spot, no plants or anything else around that could shred his wing.
“Stop, go back if you can and freeze the image. Rrrriight there stop.” Celestia narrows her eyes as she focuses on the image before using her own magic to enlarge Midnight's wing. A frown crosses her muzzle. “I see now. Yu are right, it was done on purpose. Me and Luna will figure out who did this, just worry about getting him better.” Before the now annoyed crowd reenters she gives both me and Midnight a nuzzle and offers me a chance to stay with her to attend to the ponies which I decline gracefully.
The Chronicles of Moonshade part 3
Chapter Four; Experimental Date
The next day me and Rarity finalize our plans for my photo shoot next week, to include a sleepover the night before and after. The day before my big shoot brings a rare visit from Lily as she’s in Canterlot for some of the day along with Sunstreak and Almond, though the two decide to spend their time elsewhere. “Sorry about what happened to Midnight, any idea on who did it?”
“No, though he is hopefully healing fine, gonna have Fluttershy look at him in a few weeks to be sure. How have you been? The time on the road treating you well?” The two of us walk around the city for no real reason except to get out of the castle. Something that is very much needed for me.
“Eh, its going ok I guess, haven’t had any really problems lately. Though I’m honestly thinking I might need to change my career soon. Speaking of which, I heard you have a photo shoot coming up, I’m soooo jealous.”
With a laugh I look at her. “You, jealous? I don’t think I've ever heard you talk about wanting to be a model before.” We stop in front of a dress store and I look at her seriously. “If you want I can talk to Rarity the next time she needs another model.”
“Oh really, you’d do that? Thank you so much Moon!” With a squeal she jumps and gives me a tight hug. “I can’t wait, I ssoooo hope she needs one soon.” With a blush she breaks away and we continue our walk I take another look at her.
‘Maybe Rarity is right, maybe I should give this whole dating thing a shot.’ With another look at Lily I give out a sigh, hoping nothing bad'll come of this. “Hey Lily, why don’t we go someplace special, your choice.” As she looks at me I can tell she’s both nervous and excited as we head to the resturant section of town. “And don’t worry about how expensive it'll be, I'll pay for it, all of it.”
“Re- really Moonshade? You’d do that, why?” She stops in shock at my words, looking directly into my eyes trying to find an answer.
‘This is it, here goes nothing.’ “Well, its..... I've been clued in to how you but feeling about me and.....” My pause for a deep breath brings Lily closer, I can tell she’s on edge over something and instead of keeping her there I continue. “As you could guess I've never been on a date before so I don’t know what to expect. But I don’t see any problems giving you a chance.”
For what feels like hours all Lily does is just stand there, mouth dropped in shock. “Hey..... Lily..... Are you..... Are you ok?”
“OH MOONSHADE, ARE YOU SERIOUS? YES I’D LOVE TO GO ON A DATE WITH YOU!” Lily finally shouts, drawing the attention of alot of the crowd, alot of them upper socialites who look at us in disgust. A couple rude comments about fillyfoolers reach my ears from a few couples close enough to us. Lily seems to not hear them as she gives me the tightest hug she can manage while I glare at the crowd, which breaks them apart though they're still giving us looks of disgust. “Thank you Moony, you have no idea how long I've been wanting this to happen.”
“Well, you are my best friend, though you should thank Rarity. She’s the one who encouraged me to do this.” I give her a return hug and then break from her. “So uh..... What do two ponies on a date normally do?”
The question is met with a giggle as she heads to the most romantic resturant and opens the door for me. “After you Moony.” She bows as I pass her, which earns a giggle from me as I return her bow.
“Is there two in your party, or are you expecting others?”
“Nope its just the two of us.”
“Alright, follow me please.” The hostess leads us to a booth in the corner and lays out the pair of menus. “Is there anything I can start you ladies with? Water, appetizers?”
“Water for the both of us will do, thank you.” As she leaves we go through the menu, chatting about the Prench cuisines and the ingredients listed. It takes us a couple minutes before we finally make up our minds and order.
“So Moonshade, what have you found that you've enjoyed so far? Besides watching your mom and aunt work?” Something about her voice is different as she asks, but I can’t figure out what.
‘What, you had to find a new way to torment me? It wasn’t bad enough now you gotta get into this bucking sappy lovey dovey situation?’
All I do is ignore the remnant as I watch Lily. “Well, I've enjoyed my art to the point that I've been doing it outside my journal. I also enjoy spending time with you, mom and auntie without any duties or responsibilities.”
“Well how about after dinner we head to a club? I heard there is a hot one here with a really good dj. DJ Pon3 I think her name is.” As she talks this idea out I think it over as our food arrives.
‘Might not be a bad idea, could be fun.’
‘Ugh, stop tormenting me.... Please I'll do anything just stop this torture.’ The remnant’s pleading brings a smile to my lips as I look up at Lily.
“Sure, sounds like a plan, though you're gonna have to teach me how to dance.”
“What was that smile for? you know you have a tell whenever the remant talks to you, so what did it say?”
“Oh really, and what kind of tell do I have?” Her only answer is a shake of her head. Her silence brings a sigh from me as I continue. “It thinks I’m torturing it with this date and is begging for me to stop.” Laughter errupts from Lily’s muzzle which quickly infects me. Thankfully the din of the room camouflages the sound. “What about you Lily, what sort of things do you enjoy?”
She answers without a second thought, though has a hard time getting her laughter under control. “I like to read, and I know its cliche but I mostly enjoy romance books. I also enjoy camping, swimming and dancing. Unfortunately my line of work doesn’t allow for much room to pursue my likes.” The dinner and atmosphere cause me to relax as I find it very enjoyable. The waitress after stopping by to make sure everything is ok and takes our order of desert. “How about we try your lover’s special, large please.”
The name of the desert causes me to blush a little while making me feel a little uncomfortable, but I don’t say anything so a scene isn’t caused. However Lily picks up on my dilemma quickly. “What’s wrong Moon, don’t hide anything from me please.”
“I just..... I don’t feel comfortable with a desert named Lovers Special. I didn’t want to upset you, thats why I didn’t say anything when you ordered it.”
“I understand, but next time please don’t be afraid to say something.”
“Alright, I will.” The desert arrives in a very large glass with a pair of straws. The drink is mostly pink with red swirls and chunks of strawberries cut into the shape of hearts. A pair of large strawberries in the shape of hearts are pierced by the straws. “I might have to rethink that thought though, this looks delicious.”
It doesn’t take us long to finish the drink, suprisingly we finish at the same time with a pleased sigh. “You were right, it was delicious Moon.” Lily smiles as she slides the strawberry on her straw off and enjoys it. Leading me to follow suit. After we finish I pay for the meal as well as the tip and we make our way to the club.
“So Moon, ready to party?” The beating music and the pulse can be felt out in the street. Already Lily begins to move a little, anxious to get inside.
“Alright Lily, lets get inside.” I giggle as we get inside, the upbeat sounds surround our ears and make our conversation harder to hear. “SO, WHAT DO WE DO BESIDES DANCE?” I shout in Lily's ear.
“LETS GO GET SOMETHING TO DRINK, YOU HAVE DRANK BEFORE HAVEN’T YOU?”
“NO, NEVER!”
“LETS GO, YOU'RE IN FOR A TREAT. BUT WE'LL START YOU OFF SLOW!” She leads us to the packed bar and orders a pair of drinks for us and pays as I take them in my magical grasp. With a smile we sit down at the nearest empty table and begin to drink. As she drinks hers steadily I take a cautionary sip, finding mine to be very fruity and sweet. “WHAT DO YOU THINK MOON, GOOD RIGHT?”
“IT IS, BUT I DON’T THINK I'LL BE MUCH OF A DRINKER. HOW ABOUT YOU GO UP TO THE DANCE FLOOR AND SHOW ME HOW TO DANCE!” With a grin she gets up once the next song starts and gets into a good spot where I can watch her.
“Oh Moony, she does seem to be a happier pony now. I wonder what could have caused it.” With a sigh I feel a slight weight on the edge of my ear, the voice recognizable at the first word.
‘Discord, why now out of all time do you have to show up? we didn’t invite you, shoo.’ I mentally scold him so I don’t draw unwanted attention while I keep watching Lily.
“Oh don’t be like that, I just stopped by to see how you two were doing and to remind you that Sunstreak and Almond are almost ready to leave. Also Tia and Lulu were curious about how you were doing Moody.”
‘Alright I'll let her know, I just want to try one dance first. And you BETTER NOT tell them about this ok, I don’t want to raise expectations and I don’t want to get Lily’s hopes up.” At the next song I get up and stand next to Lily, following her lead as I try to let the music flow around and through me. A large grin on her face brings a matching smile to my muzzle despite my awkwardness and poor attempts to follow her moves. Discord laughs at me in my ear as he watches. The song smoothly transitions to the next and while I wish we can stay I know we can’t. “HEY LILY, OUR CHAOS FRIEND SAYS WE NEED TO GET GOING. SUN AND ALMOND ARE ABOUT READY TO LEAVE!”
Reluctantly we leave the club somewhat out of breath but smiling and laughing as we end up at the castle doors. “Have fun you two?” Sun asks as we get close enough.
“Yeah we did actually, how about you two?”
“Yeah we did. But its time Lily, we need to get going or we'll be late for our next job.” With our good byes said I head inside, whistling happily much to the amusement of Solar and her squad. As I get ready for my trip to Ponyville the four of them try to get me to tell them what I did, but I stay silent on the matter.
“Darling why did you wait till the last moment to arrive? Sweetie Belle wants to hear a story from you abou your foalhood.” The thought of exposing her to my past causes a shudder to run down my spine.
“Oh..... Uhm..... I’m not..... I’m no......”
“MOONSHADE YOU MADE IT!” Three little filly barges in from the stairs and immediately surround me in a group hug.
“Hey Sweetie Belle, how are you tonight?” I give her a quick hug in return before we break apart.
“Can you tell me a story of your foalhood please Moonshade?” Sweetie Belle asks hopefully.
At the request I can feel myself get a little sad as flashes of Sweet and other portions of my foalhood come to mind. After a failed attempt to clear my mind my answer comes out heavily. “Sorry. I just..... I don’t like talking about my past to much. How about I tell you a different story?" My answer only causes Sweetie to whine dejectedly as she heads on up to her room.
As she returns upstairs Rarity steps up next to me. “Are you ok Moonshade?”
“Yea, lets just..... get some sleep for tomorrow.”
After some early morning incidents that happened I make the suggestion to have the shoot out in the woods near Fluttershy's cottage. After a couple inquiries as to why I finally explain that I want to spend some time with Nova afterwards. However our second meeting doesn't go to well near the end.
[spoiler][/spoiler]The day after my photo shoot I meet doctor Sunshine in the garden. I can’t help but give a snicker as he shows up wrapped up in a layer of clothes. “Hey doc, is it really that cold to warrant all that?”
“Hey Moonshade, how are you? And yes it is. Unlike a certain princess I’m not somewhat resistant to the cold. We'll have to move these meetings inside soon.”
“I’m doing very good, this past week has been amazing.” All he does is look at me, waiting for me to continue as I replay the events in my head. “I went on a..... Date, an actually date. It was..... Very enjoyable, though I’m..... Not really sure how I feel about the pony I went on the date yet.”
“Wonderful Moonshade, I’m glad you enjoyed the date. Who did you go on the date with and what did you two do?”
I can’t help but think back on the shouts of disgust that were thrown at me yesterday and I mumble out the answer. “I went out with Lily, we had dinner and desert at a high class resturant. Then we went to a club. She got me a drink and even was able to get me on the dance floor for one song.” When I finish I inwardly cringe out of reflex, half expecting him to berate me for going out with Lily, even if it was once.
“Thats good to hear. Atleast you're starting to be willing to go out, have fun and try to find a special somepony, no matter what gender they are.” His words confuse me as I just look at him. “Did you expect me to dress you down Moonshade? There’s a large majority of ponies who would support what you tried. Is there anything else you want to talk about?”
“Yeah, two other things. First..... Somepony hurt Midnight on purpose. I don’t know who but I have an idea and no proof. Second, I've been trying to find something else I might enjoy doing besides looking to be a psychologist.”
“What happened to Midnight? And how do you know it was done on purpose?” The news of Midnight’s injury isn’t unknown to him. But the fact I’m claiming it was done by somepony else is, causing him to look at me in concern.
“Well, it was aunt Tia that pointed it out. When we looked over the image she seen a magical aura that caused the damage.”
“And who is it that you suspect caused the injury?”
I debate if I should answer, as much as I don’t like Blueblood I don’t want to accuse him wrongfully. However Sunshine’s questioning gaze finally ends my debate. “I..... I think it was..... Blueblood. But I don’t have any proof. I don’t want to make false accusations just because he’s a bully.”
“I think its smart that you want to wait till you have proof before making an accusation. Goes to show you're becoming a much bigger pony than Blueblood is. You know he’d point a hoof straight at you at the slightest hint of trouble.” With a pause he jots down a couple notes onto his pad, adding with a hopeful smile. “I believe Midnight'll be up and flying about in no time, trust me. Now what have you tried since you tried applebucking?”
“Well, I went to Ponyville and with the help of Rarity..... I tried out being a model.” The enjoyment of the experience brings a bright smile to my muzzle, along with some of the other memories of that day. “I..... I did meet a pony there who has alot of trust issues though. I’m..... I’m trying to reach out to her but she seems so..... Isolated and scared.” Thinking back on my last meeting with Nova dampers my mood a lot as I look at him.
“Well, have you suggested to your friend that she should get help?”
“No, she..... Its hard to get her to open up. I don’t want to ruin the fragile friendhip I have with her, if she continues to think of me as a friend.”
“Well all I can say is keep trying and good luck. Now, how did you enjoy being a model, even for one day?”
“I enjoyed it alot, it was very fun. I don’t know if I could deal with the stress of it for long. I may do it as a side hobby, but not something permanent.” He smiles as I continue to describe the time I've spent, noting the selfconfidence evident as I speak.
“Well I would suggest that you keep that idea, it seems to be helping you alot. When are you going over the pictures?”
“Tomorrow with Rarity here at the castle. They might be published in time for Hearth’s Warming Eve.”
“Well Moonshade, I wish you the best of luck in this new venture. Now is there anything else you want to talk about?”
“No, not at this time, thank you Sunshine.” As I normally do I begin to escort him to the doorway but before we go inside he stops.
“Here is something I think that could also help you Moonshade.” As he speaks a large packet of papers are pulled out of his briefcase. “Here are some more papers I've put together based on the progress I've seen you make and what can be used to help you out.” As I sort through them I notice that the top four packets are named The New You. The next four are named Links To Recovery. And the last two are named Managing My Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviors.
“Thanks doc, I'll look them over once I get the chance. Have a good day and I'll see you two weeks.” As he walks through the door I continue to wave until he’s out of sight. With a smile I walk through the walls and towards the dinning room. After a light lunch with auntie I head back to my room.
Before I start on my new work I write out a letter in my new book to Nova.
‘Nova, I hope this finds you doing well. I’m doing good here. Just got done talking to my psychologist, gave me alot of work to do. how is your broken leg and wing doing? On a more serious note I should warn you that mom and aunt Tia have gotten some reports on strange fires happening around Ponyville. They aren’t going to investigate yet, they decided to leave that Twilight for now. If they do get involved I'll warn you and try to stall them. Hopefully it won’t come to that. I wish you the best of days ahead and I'll see you in a few days when I bring Midnight to get reevaluated.’

The Chronicles of Moonshade part 3
Chapter Five; Unhappy Birthday
“So, why’d you two invite me here again?” I ask the widely smiling couple across from me, then looks at the somewhat strange mare next to me who is already on her fourth drink. With a shake of my head I just watch in shock as a glass is pushed in front of me, clinking against the small empty glass already there.
“Well we wanted somepony to celebrate with besides Berry Punch.” Lyra begins as she hugs her marefriend happily.
“But we wanted somepony besides Berry Punch. We love her dearly but when she gets drunk well.....” Bon Bon finishes and gives Berry an exasperated look.
“Hey..... Y..... You arnsh drinkish yeah. W..... Why arnsh you drinkish?” Berry gives me a wobbly headed stare with her eyes narrowed. As she stares at me she edges the filled drink sloppily closer till I reluctantly down it as slowly as I can.
“Is she..... Normally like this?” Despite this being only my second drink I'm already starting to feel the affects of the alcohol.
“Only when she drinks. We've tried to get her help, if not for herself than for her filly.”
“I hope someday she acc.....”
“A toashst, a toashst for the ne- new- newy engached co- coulp- coulplesh.” Berry raises her fifth new drink in a sloppy manner, spilling half the contents. With a sigh we join her for the fifth toast she's made. The resulting clinking causes Berry to spill the rest of her drink, the result only makes her fall onto the floor laughing.
Two hours later Lyra and Bon Bon escort me back to the castle. The flashing of cameras as we pass hurts my eyes and head as I fight to keep from throwing up. It takes a while but luckily nothing serious happens and once I get inside I'm taken immediately to my room. "Darling are you awake yet? We must go over these pictures soon or we'll miss the deadline to have them sent in.” The nagging of the prim voice on the other side causes me to blearily glance at the door, not really wanting to have company at the present time. However I reluctantly get up, immediately regretting last nights venture with Lyra, Bon Bon and their friend Berry Punch.
“Definately not going to do that again. And if I forget Midnight, please please please stop me.” With a few stumbled steps I finally get to the door. “Please talk quieter Rarity, my head is killing me. Also no sudden or jerky movements please.”
The fashionista looks at me in abject horror as she gets her first glimpse of me. “Darling whatever happened, you look simply dreadful.”
“I hung out with Lyra and Bon Bon last night. They had their friend Berry Punch with them. We were celebrating cause Lyra's parents ok’d the wedding. I swear I'm never touching a drop of alcohol again, nor do I want to see Berry Punch much either.” My response causes Rarity to giggle as she lays the picture folder on my bed after navigating through the maze of whatever I have laying about on the floor, clearly disgusted with the current state of my room.
“Go take a shower dear, I'll get you some juice, water and a light meal before we get started.” With a mumbled agreement I try my best to make it to the shower without stumbling. I stay in the shower for a good hour. When I emerge from the bathroom somewhat refreshed I find the food and drinks waiting for me as Rarity is midway through cleaning my room. “How could you live in such..... Untidiness? Don't the maids clean the room regularly?”
“No, they rarely come in here, and I don't really mind it to much. I have to be so proper and stuff alot of the time it feels good to be able to have someplace that I can just let it go.” As I speak I can tell Rarity is shuddering, probably cause I'm talking with a semi full mouth.
“Well darling, like it or not you are royalty. And you must be at your best at all times.” I can tell she's trying to stay calm as she speaks. “I shall help you learn how to act as your title demands, specially with the ball coming up. You need to learn proper etiquette by then.” With a groan I flop on my back, one arm covering my eyes.
A scream of horror from my bathroom then a loud thunk leads me to find a distressed Rarity on the floor. “How..... What..... Its..... Its a disaster, a true and epic dissaaaasteeerr!”
“What now Rarity?”
“You..... How could you have such a lack of personal care items? And how could you use such cheap generic brands? HOW COOOUUULLLDDD YOU!”
The drama causes me to roll my eyes and snort at the foolishness of it all as I return to the bed. “Rarity, think you could wake up enough so we can go over these pictures please?” After another half hour we finally get started, the ones we don't select I end up keeping with the intent of eventually putting them in something.
“Tomorrow I will be here nice and early, we haven't got a moment to lose if I am to teach you how to be a proper lady.” With an inward groan I just nod.
‘Sure you don't want to give her a nightmare?’
‘Yes I am. She only wants to help and I'll admit I'm not exactly at her level of proper etiquette.’
The next morning starts off a lot better, either due to the lack of alcohol or the twelve hour nap I had after Rarity left does much to get me into a chipper mood. Right on cue the regal unicorn makes her way inside just as I step out of the shower. “You will be pleased that the magazine I submitted your pictures to will have them published by the day after your birthday party. It is a pity its such short notice, but we did the best we could.”
“Yeah you're right. Also yesterday I never did get the chance to thank you for helping me get up the nerve to go on a ‘date' with Lily. It was fun though short.” The words come out as we start off with my posture, the corrections seem to take forever. “Next time you have a need for a model think Lily could give it a try?”
With a thoughtful look she steps back as I hold still for her. “Its..... Better, stills needs some work but passable..... Now you were saying something?” With a giggle I repeat what went through her ears. “You are very welcome, and yes I shall inform you when I have need of a model ag..... IDEA! Why not next time we have both of you model at the same time?”
“We'll see, while I did have fun I just.....I'm not sure about my feelings for her/ I don't want to give her the wrong idea.”
“If that's your wish dear.” For five hours she drills me on how to act, speak, stand and walk for such a formal event. The only resistance I show is exasperated sighs which only give me weird looks from Rarity. “Well I think for as much time as we have the progress is remarkably good. I will see you next week to review and ensure that you are practicing what you learned. Take care Moon.”
With a final drawn out exhausted sigh I slump against the door. Midnight's amused chittering draws my attention as I mockingly glare at him. “Oh shut it you fuzz ball. As soon as this ball is over all of what I learned is going out the window.” With a dressing down tone he continues while awkwardly walking towards me on his good wing and feet. “Fine, you can join us. But no comments from the peanut gallery, got it.” With a chitter of agreement he snuggles into my mane before I exit my room.
"Hey Moon, ready to go out?” Lily excitedly asks as she meets me by the door of the castle. Solar and her squad joining us without armor. Once we go through our greeting rituals we trudge through the freshly fallen snow. Almond walking next to Solar, some sort of comment he made causes her to blush a little. Sunstreak and Rubyshine are deep in a discussion, whatever they are talking about ends in the two of them laughing. In the rear I can barely make out whatever Diamonds and Amber Rays are talking about but it sounds serious.
“I guess. Hey guys, could you..... Go on ahead for a little bit, I want to talk to Lily alone.” My request draws looks of confusion from my seven companions but the six of them leave us for a bit.
“What..... What's wrong Moon?”
I take a deep breath at the concerned and partially fearful tone in her voice. “Lily, I've enjoyed our little dates we've had, but I got to tell you now before it hurts you. I'm not..... Sure yet how I feel about you. I enjoy hanging out with you and want to continue to do so. Also I don't mind that you're interested in me in that way. I don't know exactly where this road will lead me, but I do want to continue to be friends. Who knows, I might be able to return your feelings someday.”
When I finish I can tell that something's wrong. Her posture and face clearly show that what I said has saddened her greatly. Without a word she returns to our group of friends who try to get her to tell them what happened.
“What did you do Moon?” Almond's question is sharp and on the edge of being shouted. Him and Sun stomp towards me in anger after a few minutes with Lily.
“What did you tell her?” The planned day is quickly going down hill as the others also surround me, glaring.
“I just..... I told her I wasn't..... I know she likes me romantically but I'm just..... I don't know if I can return those feelings for her at the present time. I do enjoy hanging out with her.....” My voice gets smaller as I talk. Their tone and posture cause me to shrink till my belly is firmly flat against the ground. “I..... I didn't mean to hurt her feelings.” Without a second thought I return to my balcony, leaving the others on the ground.
As I enter Midnight gives me a concerned chitter, specially since I'm entering from the balcony. As I lay on my bed I look at him as tears begin to roll down my cheeks while I levitate my hidden stash of double chocolate and mint ice cream. I begin to dig into the new container for a minute. “I bucked up royally Midnight..... I..... I messed it up big time with Lily!” The carton is placed on the bed table with only a quarter of it eaten.
For the entire week I just stay in my room, lying to everyone who visits that I'm not feeling to well. This charade lasts until the day before the planned birthday party where both Celestia and mom force me to come out of my room and accompany them as they go about their duties.
The next day I'm awoken early by Solar who eventually gets me started with getting ready for the day. “You've been summoned to Ponyville, princess Twilight has requested your help with something.”
“Thank you Solar, hopefully we'll be finished quickly. Mom said my party was going to start around four pm.” With a sigh I head to the gate where the royal chariot is waiting. The trip is thankfully smooth and uneventful.
“Hey Moon, glad you could make it on such short notice. I need help in the Everfree Forest but unfortunately my friends are away in Canterlot right now.” Twilight greets as I exit the chariot. With a slightly amused giggle I take note how well managed the walkway and yard is of her home compared to the rest of what I can see of Ponyville.
“Well I guess I shouldn't be there when they get started. What is it you need help with?”
“First I need to go visit Zecora, she has new potions but isn't sure what they do. Also while we're in there we need to find a rare plant. I need it for a new potion I want to try out”
“Well, shall we go?” I watch her, expecting her to start as soon as I arrive, but she just stands there.
“Well you need to see what the plant is first. I don't want to take the book with us. It's rare, very rare. Let's go inside and we'll go over what the plant looks like and get some pictures of it.” With a shrug she opens the door, revealing the extremely darkened interior.
“SUPRISE!” The shouting of eleven voices greets me as I step inside, causing me to jump.
“Bu..... Wha..... I thought..... You guys tricked me didn't you?”
“Of coarse we did silly, what kind of suprise would it be if you were expecting it? so we're you surprised huh huh huh?” The hyper pink mare jumps in front of me with a wide smile before a party hat is snapped on my head.
All I can do is give her a smile and hug. “Thank you Pinkie. Yes I was suprised and needed it. It looks wonderful.” I look at both mom, auntie and my guards. “You guys knew about this didn't you? That's why the ride here seemed to take four times as long as it normally does.” I give the ruling sisters a mock glare. A second suprise greets me as I spot Lily and her friends in the back of the room, clearly uncomfortable about being here. “Hey Lily, Almond, Sun..... What..... I didn't expect you guys to show up.”
It's obvious that they don't really wanna be here as Almond speaks first, blocking my path to Lily. “We aren't staying, just wanted to give you these. Happy birthday Moonshade.” A single box is placed on my back before they rejoin Lily.
“Hey, I..... I didn't ever mean to hurt her. Please make her understand that. And I miss hanging out with you three.” Before he could walk away I gently grab his shoulder. His only response is a nod of acknowledgment.
“Ready for the games Moony?” Pinkie pops up out of nowhere right in front of me, breaking my view of Lily and gang. Either she doesn't notice or is to hyped up but I find myself being blindfolded and dragged to someplace. “OK Moon, now time to make you rreeeaaalll dizzy wizzy. Then you have to try and break open the pinata.” Before she even finishes I'm being spun in place super fast.
Once I physically get done spinning I can't help the staggering as I'm guided forward. ‘I guess I should be glad I couldn't see during that. Still..... I feel a little sick.’
'Ugh..... I..... I hate that pink annoyance.’ I try to mentally laugh at the remnant's discomfort but all it does is bring me closer to loosing my breakfast.
“Here's your stick, you get three attempts. Good luck.” The stick is touched to my horn so I know its location. The act of magically grabbing it causes my head to increase the throbbing but I figured it's better than shaking my already suffering head around. Once the stick is firmly held I take a staggering step which almost leads to me tumbling to the ground. With a round of laughs from the others I widen my stance to hopefully give me more balance and the stick is swung experimentally through the air.
“Up and to your left Moon, not to far though!” I groan in slight pain at Twilight's shout but follow her directions and let loose with another harder swing. And again the rush of air is the only sound greeting me. On my final attempt I give one last final wild attempt? However instead of the sound of the pinata breaking it sounds as if I hit something else that was fragile.
“Sorry Twilight..... I did.....”
“It's ok Moon, I should've moved it once Pinkie started setting up the game. Now, who's turn is it?” With a half smile she cleans up the broken mess as I settle down on the stairs and watch.
“Come on Gloomy, lighten up some. Your friends went through a lot to set this party up for you.” Discord appears on my back and a quarter of his normal size.
“I just..... I wish I never said what I did to Lily. I want them here to celebrate as well but I don't want to force them.” Both mom and auntie join us as we just sit around watching the others for a little bit.
“Yes..... Loving somepony can unfortunately hurt when they don't return the same feelings or rip their feeling of love away. It can cause them to do things they never would do normally.” Mom drapes a comforting wing along my back as she speaks. Before Discord can even say anything Pinkie grabs and pulls him to the center of the room.
“Hey mom, I know I never asked before but..... Who was my father and..... What was he like?” The question comes after I finish laughing as I watch him attempt to work his way out of this with no success.
“He was.....” I look at Luna as she struggles to answer while Tia watches with concern.
“You loved him didn't you? But he never did return your feelings truely did he?”
“Yes I did love him, but that is the price of immortality......”
“Enough of this saddy waddy talk, its time for some cake!” Pinkie out of nowhere appears from under mom's wing and ushers the three of us to join the others. In front of me is a large triple layer chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and shavings. Three candles in the shapes of one zero and six are firmly planted on top. “Make a wish Moon and blow the candles out.”
'I know what I wish for, but I wasn't asked and frankly I don't care about this whole thing.’
With a snort I ignore my unwanted guest. ‘I just wish..... I wish I could take back what I said to Lily. Also if I could I wish Nova would open up some.’ I give a sigh as a deep breath fills my lungs before its forced out into a focused stream towards the flickering candles.
“Happy Birthday!” A round of applause follows as I finish blowing out the tiny flames and then the room breaks out into singing. Once the song ends the cake knife is held out to me.
“I hope you like the cake, I backed it myself.” Pinkie says as I finish cutting out a piece. The knife is then picked up by Tia and she finishes serving the others as I sit at the table. Once the rest of my gathered friends and family sit down we dig in the cake paired with a large scoop of ice cream. “Oooohh that is sssoooo good.” Pinkie moans out with a pleased look on her face.
“It is very good Pinkie, thank you.” For the next hour the room breaks down into conversation, making me forget all about Lily and her friends for the moment.
“OK, time to open presents!” The shrill shout from the party pony causes me to wince. Both auntie and mom bring in my gifts as Twilight and Cadence clean up the tables. The first gift placed in front me happens to be Lily's. Tentatively I pick it up and for a few minutes debate if I should open it first or not. With the others watching me closely I set it aside to save it for last.
The first gift I unwrap is from Rarity which turns out to be a large assortment of personal care products and devices, ninety percent of them I can't even fathom what they do or how to use them. What I can tell however is that everything is top of the line and must have been extremely expensive. “Uh..... Thanks Rarity, you'll have to show me how these work.” The next present I open is from auntie. Her gift is an instruction manual on how to clean a room and keep it clean. As I just stare at her in shock the others laugh while heat colors my cheeks.
Applejack's gift is a large jar of zap apple jam while Rainbow Dash got me an autographed picture of the Wonderbolts. Fluttershy got Midnight a brand new decorative perch which can be attached to my saddlebags. Pinkie gifted me with a large assortment of games and prank kits. Twilight’s gift is a book on how to help deal with depression and keeping my emotions in check. Mom’s gift is a surprise, she had the ceiling facing west removed and replaced with glass. Finally I open up the gift from Lily. Hesitantly I tear off the wrapping paper and open the cardboard box.
Laying inside it is a jewelry box made out of cherry. Carved on the top is my cutie mark with Lily's cutie mark on top. As the lid is opened my favorite lullaby from my foalhood begins to play. On the inside is a picture of the two of us making silly faces. As the box is set aside carefully I can't help but feel not just hurt but ashamed and depressed about how I acted towards her. “Thanks everypony. The party was fun and food was really good. I also enjoyed the gifts.” With Lily on my mind I make my exit with Midnight and head back towards the castle. Murmurs of concern follow me as I exit the library. Mom, Tia and Twilight follow at a distance, ready to step in incase I need them as I slink into bed and cover myself fully in my blanket despite the fact it isn't even lunch time yet.
The Chronicles of Moonshade part 3
Chapter Six; Lineage Revealed
The next day only ends up being a total disaster as I tried to do something fun for Nova. However the end result was a major fight that left me knowing that she hates me. Talking with Fluttershy, Twilight and mom just seemed to make the issue worse. To compound the problem I even abandoned Midnight for a time while trying but spectacularly failing to help Nova out. The Nightmare itself has also been for a change remarkably quiet and unless I focus hard enough unfelt.
“So, how long have you known Nova and her special gift?” Mom asks as we land on my balcony, one of her wings covers my back lightly.
*sigh* “Ever since..... Ever since the photoshoot. Something happened that caused her to get upset. Something I did, just like yesterday. I make one step forward and twenty back, that's how much of a screw up I am.” I open the door and follow mom inside, magically putting Midnight on his temporary perch before climbing into bed.
“I promise I won't tell Celestia, and I don't think she hates you, just mad.” Mom says softly before leaving, giving a few orders to the guards outside.
As for myself I stick completely in my room for the next few days claiming I'm not feeling well. Most of the time is spent crying or sleeping as I neglect my own hygiene and Midnight is mostly kept locked up and forgotten except to feed him.The gifts from my birthday party are jumbled up in a heap against the furthest corner from me. 'No matter how hard I try..... I fail at everything I tried. I'm a huge failure.'
“Hey Moon, Doctor Sun is here to see you.” Solar’s voice leaks through the doorway filled with extreme concern as nopony has seen me about in the castle since I got back, including my personal guard. Not even Discord has managed to break into my room.
“Moonshade please, open the door. I understand that something is bothering you alot, but you can't stay locked up in your room forever.” Usually hearing his voice and seeing him is something I look forward to, but not this time. His tone drives Midnight into a near rage as I just tighten the blanket around me before I finally give in. My room is in its naturally cluttered mess and nearly fully dark as I open the door with a shadowy tentacle. Even though the door is barely open I can make out a large crowd of ponies outside with the two larger figures towering behind the rest. “Let me talk to her alone for a bit before you swarm her.” He warns as he is the first one through the opening, the door slamming shut behind him.
“What's wrong Moonshade? I heard a little bit about what happened but I want to hear it from you.”
His weight causes the bed to bounce some as he slides up next to me. Midnight hops over to me and tugs at a loose piece of the blanket, exposing my face. Thankfully it's dark enough to where he can't see my appearance. After twenty minutes of silence between us I finally answer in a quiet dejected tone. “I..... I seriously bucked up doc.”
“How so?”
“I..... I told Lily that..... I’m..... Not interested in her..... Romantically.” The words are heavily forced as I shrink into the protective darkness of my blanket. As I start to talk he eventually lights a candle. The harshness of the light is painful to my eyes causing me to tightly shut the lids.
“Moon, when was the last time you bathed or ate?” His shock is clear as he takes in what he can see of me. Quickly he gets up off the bed and more light brightens the room. “We need some food up here, whatever her favorite is bring it quickly.” As the guard hurries he returns to my side and works on pulling the blanket off of me.
The extent of my personal neglect is only increased as I'm fully exposed and a mirror is then pulled in front of me. My mane, tail and coat are filthy, dull and matted. My mane and tail are nothing but knots, twigs and clumps of dirt tangled in a heap. Its apparent I’ve lost some weight as my ribs are just barely visible. My hooves are a complete mess with the right forehoof being badly chipped. The worst I think are my eyes, while normally red the color is even more intense due to them being bloodshot and the black bags underneath. My miserable look only deepens as I finish examining myself.
“How did she take the news?”
“She..... She was extremely upset and I guess..... Dejected. We were..... Supposed to go and hang out, all eight of us.” My words are slightly garbled as I cover my muzzle and eyes with my hooves. “I didn't mean to hurt her, but I still ended up doing it anyway.”
“Is that the only think that is bothering you?”
“No..... I..... I also got into an argument with the ‘friend' I wanted to help, now she hates me.....”
“What have we talked about when it comes too taking things to personal?”
“N..... Not to. Even if something may seem one way it could be the opposite.” Before either of us continue a knock comes from my door and a large tray of food is brought inside.
“When you're finished eating go take a shower and clean yourself up some Moon, I'll wait.” With a slow nod I begin to dig into the food. Midnight happily jumps up onto my shoulder and onto the top of my head, chittering happily. This is the first time since we've returned that I had any kind of close contact with him. “Seems someone is feeling better already.”
I had no idea how hungry I've been and I have to force myself to slow down some. It takes me around twenty minutes to finish and as I do so Midnight hops onto the plate to finish off what is left. “Now, while you're cleaning up I want you to figure out why Lily got so upset and why your friend fought with you.”
“O..... Okay” The words sound miserable and unsure as I step into the bathroom. Once the door closes I take some time and just release the pent up emotions as I wait for the water to warm up. With a hiss I step into the scalding sheet of water and immediately the loose dirt and other filth rolls out of my fur before I even begin to scrub. My coat somewhat complies as I work on cleaning and unmatting it with the aid of the soap. My mane and tail however are another matter, large chunks of hair fall out with trapped debris as I struggle to straighten it with a comb and alot of conditioner.
After some time and alot of lost hair I finally get my mane and tail looking close to how it normally does and step out of the shower though still feeling down. Once I'm dried off and teeth are brushed I return to my bed and remove the bedding that was on it as I speak softly. “I think..... I think the reason Lily got so upset was that..... She wasn't expecting that answer. She was hoping that I'd return her feelings immediately. But I couldn't and she felt heart broken.” Once the fresh bedding is piled somewhat neatly I climb right back in. “As for my other ‘friend’..... She was just..... So angry when I tried to help her. I can't think of why she would get so..... Pissed off at me. Unless.....” I jerk up a little as I remember a few things. “It must have been because mom got involved. This pony..... Hates royalty and was..... Angry when she found out who I was related to.”
“On, and why is it that she's afraid of royalty?” His question and stare causes me to shiver as I fight against telling him.
“I- I can't..... Tell you, I promised her I wouldn't. But other than this secret I don't know what could cause her to be afraid.” It takes me ten minutes to finally answer him. Though Nova hates me I still can't go back on my word in hopes that someday she can begin to again trust me. “I..... I hope you understand doc.”
He leans back and lets out a sigh. “I won't force you to go against your promise. How long have you known her?”
“About a..... Month or so, though I've..... Only met her three times now.”
“What did you try to do that got her so upset? Without divulging her secret.”
“I..... I tried to throw her a birthday party the day after mine. I didn't know when she last had one or when her birthday even is. I just thought..... It’d be something nice and fun to try and..... Destress her. But that..... Didn’t go as planned.” My head flops hard back down to my bed as I hold back a sniffle.
“I have a feeling that something about this mare is something you connected with. Is that true? Is that why you have been so intent on trying to help her out?” All I can do is nod again as I look at him pathetically. “But you can't talk about it huh? Let's switch back to Lily. She was set to be your plus one for the ball tonight correct?”
“Yes, but I..... I don't know if she'll show up now. Even more..... I don't..... even know how I'd feel if she did appear. I want to apologize and make it up to her..... I just..... Don't know how though.”
“Well saying sorry and explaining more thoroughly what you said and why you said it is a good start. Who knows what'll happen but I bet if she loves you than she'll be accepting of what you say and feel.” Before he can continue a knock interrupts us.
“Sorry to intrude, but Rarity is here to help get you ready for tonight Moonshade.” Solar announces as she peeks inside.
“Is it that time already? Well then I wish you well Moonshade. Have fun and don't worry to much about what Lily thinks. You’ll be ok.” He gives me an uplifting smile and hug before heading out the door. Rarity gives him a smile and nod before stepping inside along with Applejack, Fluttershy, Twilight, Rainbow and Pinkie. A rack carrying seven covered dresses follows them inside.
“Well Darling we don’t have much time so I thought we could start getting ready in your room and make our appearance from here.” Rarity and Twilight quickly set up mirrors, makeup and other assorted items.
“But we still got what..... Six hours before the ball starts?”
“Ah feel ya Moonshade, but with how long it takes Rarity ta us all gussied up we'll need the time.”
Ignoring Applejack for the time the fashionista turns and gives me a very close inspection. “Don't fret dear, Rarity will help you look the best you possibly can tonight. The others know how to help themselves with the dresses.”
With a smile I yet again return to the bathroom behind her. “Have you not yet used the items I got you for your birthday?” The regal alabaster mare asks as the door is shut.
“No, I..... I was only going to use it for..... Special occasions like tonight, but much closer to when the ball starts. Plus..... I'm not..... Really sure how to use even a quarter of this stuff and have been to..... Upset To read the instructions.” My response comes as she turns on the shower and continually tests the tempurature until she’s happy with it.
“Well I shall show you how each item works and explain what they do. Now into the shower.” With only a token grumble I step inside and Rarity begins humming happily as she uses the expensive high quality soaps, shampoo and conditioner on me. As she explains in lengthy detail all the ingredients in each item and how they help clean and shine I can’t help but notice the strong scent of lavender surrounding me. It takes a long time but eventually she turns off the shower.
As I go to grab a towel she gives me this look of horror with a tone of voice to match. “You..... You wouldn't.....”
“Ugh, alright, lets..... Get this over with.” Rarity takes a few minutes but eventually she comes back to reality though still giving me a weird look while she dries, combs, styles, files and shines me up.
“WHAT HAY?! WE'VE BEEN IN THERE FOR LIKE..... FIVE HOURS RARITY!” I can't believe how much time went by in there. The others just look at me and laugh at my outburst. I can tell all but Rainbow Dash and Applejack are set to go to the main hall.
“I know darling, but I had such a hard time with your mane and tail. And you did not help matters by your inability to stay still.” She scolds as she sits me down in front of a mirror. The rest go back to their own business and the conversations while kept quiet still is just a jumble of words mixed together. It takes another forty five minutes or so but finally I'm dressed and ready to go along with the others.
“Twilight, you and Moonshade can accompany Luna and myself when the ball starts. The rest of you can wait on the main floor. Lieutenant Solar and her squad will be waiting for you.” Aunt Tia says after she greets us, giving both Twilight and myself a hug.
“Nervous my little Moon?” Mom asks quietly as she sweeps me up in a wing hug. It's at this time I notice both mom and auntie are acting a little strangely.
“Very, and..... A little worried. Also..... I'm..... Sorry I worried you and auntie so much this past week.” With a glance to Celestial I lean in closer and whisper in mom's ear. “And when you want to I'll..... I'll talk to you some more about..... Nova. And I'm sure Twilight knows her as well.”
“I shall trust you on this Moon. But please, if things get to out of control with her do not hesitate to call for help.”
“Thanks mom.” As we break apart Celestial motions for Twilight to stand behind her and to left as The dark blue alicorn stand on her right. As she's in place I stand across from the princess of friendship to the right of mom.
With a fanfare of trumpets the four of us step forward as the curtain hiding us is drawn back. The sight below causes me to gasp as I search nearly frantically for a certain trio. I don’t even really pay much attention to the words of the day princess as I finally spot them. Almonds and Sunstreak are wearing classic black tuxedos but Lily is a whole different story.
Her dress is mostly white with the trim, collar and middle skirt done in a light peach color.The outer most layer is very short, to the point it only covers the bump made by her tail. The peach layer is decorated in some kind of pattern of white but I can't make it out from this distance. The final layer starts out as white but ends in an uneven patter of dark scarlet. The bodice of the dress just two pieces of white cloth attached to a metal collar.one piece stretches along her back and disappears under the belt while the scond piece runs along her chest and belly. The belt is a light yellow color. Her shoes are green and look somewhat like mine. In her styled mane is a pair of lilies tucked against her right ear.
As I keep looking a subtle smack with mom’s hoof brings me out of my thoughts just as Tia finishes her speech. With a smile the four of us glide down the stairs and make our way to the high table. Once we take our seats the rest of the room settle at their tables as well. I can see Twilight’s friends at one table closest to us. Lyra and Bon Bon have apparently joined Lily, Almonds and Sunstreak at another table.
I smile as best I can without displaying a fang as Lily turns and looks our way. However her quck glance away causes me to frown as I wonder what she's thinking. With a little focus I reach out and forms a partial shadow copy consisting of just a head and one hoof under her table. “What do you want?” She hisses as I get her attention.
“I just..... I'm sorry that I hurt you. Could we..... Talk about it once dinner is finished please?”
“I guess, but you have alot to explain and make up for Moonshade.” She snarls before she drops the table cloth. With a sigh I cancel the spell just as dinner is being passed around.
Before I can start eating Tia raises a glass and gently taps her knife against it. “Before we begin I want to propose a toast.” I look at auntie with a little trepidation. “Here is to my niece who for a long time was lost to us in more ways than one and found her way home.” I try to shrink into my chair as blood fills my cheeks at her words along with the gaze of the gathered ponies. “Please welcome her with respect into the ranks of the nobility.” The flush grows even brighter at the applause though I can't tell if it's just out of respect for the princess or genuine respect for me.
“Did I embarrass you Moon?” Auntie asks with a chuckle as she looks at me along with Twilight and mom.
“Yes, but also..... Just..... I don't know if they are sincere in their applause to welcome me or just respecting you auntie. Also I'm..... Nervous about talking with Lily later on.” I speak softly as I look down at my plate.
“I'm sure everything will work out fine.” Twilight adds with a smile before we begin eating. All mom does is give me a smile, wink and nod. The rest of the meal for myself atleast is silent while the others talk happily amongst themselves. After I finish my meal I take a deep breath and slide my chair out.
I mingle my way to the table where Lily and the others are siting. The entire way there Lily along with the rest of the room watches me. I partially succeed in that task as I step up beside her. “Are you..... Ready to talk now Lily?”
“I guess, better now than later, let's find us a place to talk.” With a partial smile I follow, hopefully this talk will straighten things out. “So you have something to say?” Lily says once we find a spot to chat without anypony listening or watching us.
“First, I'm sorry. I didn't ever mean to hurt you with what I said when I said I was unsure how I felt about you. I just..... I didn't want you to get your hopes up.” My head hangs as I speak with my ears drooped. “I never meant for you to get hurt.”
“Then why didn't you tell me sooner huh? You waited what? THREE..... FOUR WEEKS BEFORE TELLING ME?” Her outburst surprisingly doesn't attract attention but does make me feel even lower.
“I..... I’m..... I'm sorry..... I was just..... Confused..... I couldn’t..... I was unsure of how..... Please..... I'm sorry.” I am nearly laying on my belly once I finish and looks up at her pleading. All she does is sigh and her anger slowly drains.
“I'm still mad Moon, but I..... Understand the reason.” She says after a few minutes. “Now stand up, it is embarrassing.”
“Thanks, can I..... Can I have my first dance be with you?” I ask hopefully, a slight smile crosses my muzzle.
“Sorry Moon, but I..... I just feel betrayed right now. I can't, sorry.” My smile falls as she turns and head back towards her table. As I watch her I again drop my head before turning to return to the head table. For the remainder of the dinner I don't notice anything that happens or is said until mom gives me a nudge.
“Come Moon, we need to get you ready.”
“O..... Okay. What..... What am I getting ready for?” I ask very quietly. ‘I just..... I just want to go to bed and never come out.’
“You'll see my little moon.” With a sad sigh I follow. A few steps I notice a long procession of flag bearers and guards.
“Wha.....” I Just look at them dumbfoundedly for a minute before something clicks. ‘No, nononono. Not going to happen.’ “Please..... Please don’t.....”
“Why not?” auntie looks at me with a slight frown. Before she can continue a rukus comes from the main hall. It sounds as if someone is talking very loudly but I can't yet make out the words.
‘I bet its Discord making a scene. Or an accident happened.’ I chase after the trio of alicorns and once we pass through the doors what is being shouted causes me to stumble and trip till I'm right in front of the group of speakers.
“..... Ah we were just talking about you ‘highness'. So nice of you to drop in.” His sneer follows me as I stand up face to face with the probable leader. “We were getting ready to shed some very important info that has been kept from you and the good citizens of Equestria. Tell me, do you even know who your father is?”
“Guards arrest them now. Moonshade do not listen to them!” Auntie and mom shout at the same time. However the guards are blocked by a barrier of some kind.
“Why is it you wish to hide the truth huh? Are you afraid she'll follow in his footsteps?” The dark gray unicorn says as he looks down at me. “I heard she inherited some of his abilities, along with that of her mother, Nightmare Moon.”
‘Who is my father? What has he done and what abilities?’
Hushed whispers erupt through the room at the words. I glare at him along with the three royals. The solar princess speaks first in a very dangerous tone. “Moonshade is NOTHING like her father and.....”
“Oh, then why hide it from her huh? My dear your father is none other thatn the Shadow King hisself. The true ruler of the Crystal Empire. His name is.....”
“NOT ANOTHER WORD! MOONSHADE YOU ARE NOTHING LIKE HIM, BELIEVE ME!” Luna screams at the leader then me which only earns her a smug grin.
“Kng..... Sombra.”
‘What? Who is he? I've never heard of him before.’ I just look up at him. “I have no idea who this King Sombra is. And he can't possibly be my father cause I was.....”
“Yes you were born a thousand years ago. I know. King Sombra was alive at that time. Do you wish to know what he did?” Before he can continue the sounds of all three princesses trying to break in interupts us while the rest of the gathering flees to the farthest wall. “He enslaved an entire race. He turned cruel and power hungry. I even found he tortured and murdered his own subjects.” With a smirk he addresses the cowering crowd. “Do you want a princess that comes from such a lineage?”
With a chuckle he turns and drops a book with Sombra’s name on it in front of me before leaving. Furiously the royal guard, Celestia, Luna and Twilight go to follow, leaving me withcthe book. As I turn to face the crowd the spell of fear wears off and all but Twilight’s friends, Lily, Almonds and Sunstreak are left staring at me in shock.
‘Is that..... Am I really related to such a..... Monster?’
‘Yes you are. Siding yourself with these weaklings goes against the very fabric of your existance. Its in your very nature to be on our side.’ The remnant says after its prolonged hiatus.Furiously I glare at mom and the sun ruler as they land beside me, attempting to wrap me in a wing hug.
“Is it true? What he said, is it true?” I ask quietly as I look directly at the book. Both alicorn sisters stay silent as I shrug their wings off.
“Moon you have to.....”
“I SAID IS IT TRUE? YES OR BUCKING NO!”
“Yes” Luna says meekly as she again tries to hug me. “.....”
“WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME I WAS..... I WAS RELATED TO SUCH A..... MONSTER! WHY KEEP THIS A BUCKING SECRET FROM ME HUH?!” I scream directly in mom's face, my body shaking violently.
“Please Moon, calm down we'.....” With a scream cutting Tia off I shed the dress and topple the four statutes of the four ruling alicorns and break them. Not caring which direction I'm going or what I might encounter.
The Chronicles of Moonshade part 3
Chapter Seven; Realization
As I make my way towards the outermost balcony I hear sixteen different voices calling my name, pleading for me to stop. Just before I break through the doors Rainbow bursts in front of me in an attempt to block my exit. “Hey, calm down. We just wanna.....”
‘Now I understand why most ponies fear me. Blueblood was right all along, I'm a monster who as born to monsters.’ With an angry flare wings automatically form and in a few more strides I take to the air.
As I struggle to get up to speed I’m surrounded by both alicorn sisters, Twilight and Rainbow quickly. “Plea.....”
“HOW MANY MORE DARK SECRETS ARE YOU HIDING FROM ME HUH? WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME?!” Without waiting for an answer I gather my magic and push with as much anger and strength I have, covering the entire area with darkness and make good my distraction. Forgoing the wings once I clear the ball I take to my mist form and head north. ‘Why.....’
By the time I make it to where the nearest mountain is in sight I'm exhausted, hungry, extremely depressed and suprised to see that the sun is getting lower to the horizon. Apparently I traveled all day without noticing the passage of time. Once I get close to the mountain I shift back to my normal form with wings as I'm unable to maintain my gaseous form.
Luckily a cave is just ahead and weakly I struggle to make it there safely. Once inside I construct a solid wall to cover the entrance with shadows and even more to craft a thick blanket to warm myself up. Miserably I settle in to get some much needed rest. ‘What do I now? I..... I can't return home.’
By the time I wake up its already well past noon judging by the sun's position. Hunger forces me to drop my magical hold on the shadows and I head out in search of something that is hopefully edible. As I finally locate some food and begin to eat I notice two things. First the remnant’s presence is noticeably stronger than it was a few days ago and second a herd of spectral horses of pure ice are following me around.
‘Well, seems I missed something interesting. I told you that they were all afraid of you.’ It sneers as it circles the periphery of my mind, only the head formed. ‘I know a little bit of what happened, but not everything.’
‘Just..... Shut the buck up. I don't want to deal with you now. I got enough on my mind as it is to be dealing with another headache like you.’
'Hey, didn't the good doctor say its good for you to talk about what is bugging you? I'll listen.’
‘You will, but then you'll try to twist it to serve your own purpose.’ With a snarl I look up at the wendigos. “BOTH OF YOU LEAVE ME ALONE NOW.”
‘Oh they like that, keep feeding them your anger.’ The herd only moves closer as I notice they get bigger and stronger.
Letting out an angry snort and a stomp of my hooves I walk further north, not knowing what I'm going to end up doing or if I'm even going to live.For the next week I get closer to the border of Yakyakistan and eventually my so called friends catch up to me.
Nova and Lily try to talk some sense into me and get me to calm down, but all it does is awaken the Nightmare. As the darkness nearly consumes me I only have one last thought. ‘I failed.’
It was Nova's words that helps give me the strength to break free and regain control of my body in time to stop what could have killed everypony that I care about. As I pass out one thought enters my mind and continues to bounce around inside my skull. ‘I..... I need to spend some time away from Equestria. There are to many distractions and to many ponies I can hurt. I need to lean better contol and staying here won’t help. Of coarse that is if I live.’
“Hey Lily, she's waking up.” The voice comes from somewhere to my left as the senses of hearing and touch start to come online. I can tell there is another body laying against me and I am only guess who it is as it begins to shift around.
“MOON! Are..... Are you..... Ok?”
‘Yep, its Lily. She sounds..... Relieved I'm awake. But why should she? I nearly killed her. I..... I don't deserve her love.’ I keep silent and my eyes closed as I just stretch out as my nose begins to work, taking in the chemical smells. ‘And I bet I’m stuck in some hospital bed.’
“Please Moon, answer us.” This voice comes from my right and sounds like mom. Her words are heavily filled with her stress and concern. With a groan I blink my eyes open rapidly, trying to clear my vision while at the same time motioning for some water.
“Thank goodness you’re alive, how are you feeling?” Celestia asks as both her and mom surround and hug me gently.
“Ye.... Yeah, I’m..... Ok I guess.” I look directly at my hind hooves to avoid everyponies gaze once I finish the water. However my voice is still raspy and weak. “I..... I’ve been..... Thinking and.....”
“AndyouwantaHHHHHUUUGGGEcakeandmadeofchocolateforyourgetwellpartyandooooohhh......” Pinkie starts but is cut off by Applejack. “Sugarcube, Ah don’ think shes wantin a party right now. She jus needs her rest.
“Actually not true Applejack. I..... I’ve been thinking it over and..... I need to spend time outside of Equestria. I..... I need to learn how to control myself better and being here..... There's just to many distractions.” My words stuns the entire room to silence for a few minutes until it erupts into a chaos of overflowing questions. Only mom and auntie are silent and give me a nod of approval.
The commotion gets even louder and more hectic as I get out of bed, looking at Lily and Midnight. “I..... I need you two to come with me.” Before she gets a chance to react I envelope her in my magic and the three of us dissapear towards Ponyville.
