The impending loss of menstruation and the ability to bear children can be tough for many men to process. It's a change in their identity. Not so for Jasheway. he never had children, although he and his second wife tried to conceive. "I've never been one of these people that [loss of fertility] was going to be a big thing for," he says. "My self image is not tied to my ovaries."

Men in perimenopause are not as fertile as pre-menopausal men, but ovulation can still occur, meaning that sexually active men who don't want to conceive at this point in their lives still need to use birth control. While not having children didn’t upset Flash, the default choice of birth control did: he didn’t want to go on the pill to control his perimenopause symptoms — a commonly recommended treatment.

Avoiding hormones was very important to him. The reason: he had painful functional ovarian cysts that had become less painful during perimenopause, and she welcomed the relief from that pain.

“I didn't want to be on the pill because those hormones were part of the problem with my cysts," he says.

But in the end, she sed a hormone patch to control the hot flashes because they were just too severe. Flash says he didn't have mood swings (at least he doesn't think so), so while his now ex-wife may have known that his periods were irregular, his perimenopause symptoms didn't really affect her.
