Chapter 1
Alleyway Ambush

Dream Traverse Town: First District

A few minutes of closed eyes and the feeling of wind rushing past was all that Sora could feel before it stopped. Upon opening his eyes, he saw that he had woken up in the entrance of an alley in Traverse Town. More memories surfaced, as he had remembered how, in that same alley, he had found himself in awe at arriving in a new world.

His memory high ended as soon as a pair of muscular arms grabbed him and pulled him into the alley. Sora struggled and tried to shout for help, but whoever grabbed him tightened his grip and covered his mouth.

“Can it, yo!”

Sora immediately stopped his struggle as his captor checked around a corner. He saw what his captor saw and it did not look good. He saw the trademark coat of Organization XIII.

“You can release him now, Beat. He knows the severity of the situation now.”

Sora suddenly perked up at hearing that voice. Both him and his captor looked back at the bearer of the voice. The voice belonged to none other than Neku Sakuraba.

“Neku!” Sora nearly shouted, considering that his muscular captor had his mouth in a vice grip.

“I said, let him go, Beat,” Neku said with some firmness.

After grumbling a bit, he released Sora, who rushed away from him. After calming himself down, he got a good look at Neku and Beat. Having never met Beat, Sora was a bit wary of him.

“Hey, Neku,” he said, motioning towards Beat, “Who’s this, and where’s Shiki?”

“Don’t go asking him questions about me, while I’m still standing here!” Beat retorted, “Name’s Beat, and Shiki and Rhyme completed the Reaper’s Game.”

“They did!?” Sora exclaimed with a jump. In his excitement he nearly skipped a thought. “Wait...if they completed it, you would have too and should be back in Shibuya. Why are you still here?”

Neku folded his arms and closed his eyes, apparently lost in thought. He then opened his eyes and spoke. “I not really sure myself. My best guess is that one of the Reapers want me dead more than anything else.-” He leaned against some boxes with his gaze away from Beat and Sora “-All I remember was awaking, here, in the First District and having to run for my life with no Partner and more Dream Eaters than I could even try to handle.”

“How did you get to safety and find a Partner?”

“This is where I come in!” Beat exclaimed, with a pump of his fist. “I came by from the Fifth District with the same problem. I saw Neku barely managing to keep himself alive…”

“Long story short, we made a Pact, and we are Game Partners now,” Neku cut in, “Even with a partner, we struggle against Dream Eaters so often that we have to summon our Dream Eaters just to get a five minute break.”

“No, we don’t!” Beat whispered as quietly and harshly as possible.

“Beat, I see you summon your Dream Eater when you think I’m not looking!” Neku retorted.

“Arrgh! You’re as bad as Rhyme! She always went and...and...garnished my reputation!”

“Guys!” Sora shouted, effectively ending the argument. “Now is not the time to argue! Let’s just find Joshua and then fix the problem with the guy in the black coat!”

The statement didn’t bring an immediate reaction. Beat started shuffling his feet and smiling sheepishly. Neku started to fidget and look everywhere except at Sora.

Neku then spoke up. “Sora, that’s the problem.”

“Huh?”

“Put two and two together, yo! Joshua vanished,” Beat commented.

“What!? How!?”

“Beat’s just blowing things out of proportion. He probably just left by choice.”

“Why? Isn’t he supposed to help you?”

“Yes, but he may have his reasons.”

“Before he left, he told us to leave the Realm of Dreams with you and to give you this,” Beat said, holding a touch screen phone for Sora to take.

As Sora took the phone, Neku chuckled lightly. “He must have known you were coming.”

“One step ahead of me, I guess,” Sora said, hanging his head a bit, before perking back up, “I guess we should leave, no point moping about Joshua being gone.”

“Why were you looking for him anyway?”

“Well, I’ve been having these strange dreams lately. I don’t know what to make of them. And one that I had most recently...it was...odd...yet terrifying...in a way.”

“What was it about?” Neku inquired.

I hate to interrupt, but…” Beat began to say. Before he could finish, the sound of roaring flames, and Dream Eaters materializing happened almost simultaneously. Both Sora and Neku looked to where Beat was standing and found the Alleyway entrance wreathed in flames, as well as Beat and his Spirit Dream Eater, Kooma Panda, grappling with several Nightmare Dream Eaters.

After overcoming their shock, Sora and Neku joined in the brawl with their respective Spirits. The fight was brief, but the ambush put the group on edge.

“I’m not one to rush, but could you get us out of here!” Beat shouted.

With no argument, Sora began working on starting up the portal (not easy when one is under pressure). The ethereal keyhole appeared just as Beat shouted, “Hoodie alert!” Sora turned towards the Alleyway entrance and saw the Black coated figure, roughly his and Neku’s height. Sora turned back to the keyhole and fired a beam of light from the Kingdom Key. The spell then brought the trio in a state of sleep and transported them to reality.

Back at the entrance to the Alleyway, the Black coated figure turned to another, yet taller, Black coated figure that was out of the line of sight of the Alley.

“I think what you had me do scared them more than save them,” said the shorter of the two.

The taller spoke, “I understand that, sis, but if we hadn’t interrupted that ambush, things could have been a whole lot worse. Got it memorized?”
