Chapter Nineteen: Luncheon
"Alright... Lemme show you how to perfectly angle your wing. You need to push your inner wing feathers out a little more, and your outer feathers less. Then, push your wings back a little, and flap in smooth, long strokes. Got it?" Soarin asked Rainbow Dash, who was listening to him intently. She nodded, and fluffed her wings out.
"Like this?" She asked, doing what Soarin had instructed her to do. Soarin observed her wings, and gave her a nod of approval.
"That's perfect, Dash. Nice job. Ready to try it out for real this time?" He asked her, prepping her to take off. Dash grinned, and nodded, plastering a look of pure determination onto her face.
"Ready as I'll ever be..." She said, before shooting up into the sky. Soarin started to observe her once again, giving a blank nod, looking at her figure slowly ascending into the sky. He saw her bend down, and open her wings further. He knew she was going for it.
Slowly, Rainbow's body started to free fall, before she started flapping her wings at an incredible pace. Soon, she would be going fast enough to break the sound barrier! Soarin was silently praying that nothing bad would happen this time.
Soarin could now see an air cone starting to form around Dash. He grinned. It wasn't becoming fluffy, signaling that it wasn't about to materialize into an air cloud. Slowly, the air cone began to tighten around Dash's body. But now Soarin was worried. Dash was going so fast, he was afraid that she might not start flying up fast enough! She might crash!
But his thoughts dispersed the minute after he thought them. At the very last second, the air cone was so tight, Dash knew it was time. Mere inches before she made contact with the ground, she pulled up quickly, resulting in a very loud boom.
There was a rainbow of colors extending outwards, with a colorful trail following after the mare who conjured it. Soarin could see her beaming face, as she started flying in a semi-circle motion, making a rainbow in the sky. The other Wonderbolts and the recruits all came forward to see what was going on. But they stopped in their tracks once they laid eyes on the beautiful sight before them.
"Woah..." Soarin heard Spitfire saying in disbelief.
Rainbow Dash made her way down to the crowd below, and beamed in pride. Soarin ran up to her.
"Wow! Rainbow! That was incredible!" He told her. Spitfire was the next to speak up.
"Of course... I've seen this happen before! But to see it so close... The last time I was unconscious... Now I get why everypony was cheering so loudly... Rainbow Dash! That was amazing!" She congratulated, praising Dash for a job well done. Dash blushed lightly, before realizing what she was doing, and shook her head.
"Thanks, Spitfire. Means a lot, coming from you." She said, putting her hoof behind her neck. Spitfire nodded, before returning to Button Down. Soarin then turned back to Rainbow Dash, once he saw everypony had gone back to training.
"You wanna get lunch early? Since we perfected the move, we can go to the mess hall a half hour before anypony else does. And lunch is over for the other recruits! We'll have the entire cafeteria to ourselves." Soarin suggested. Dash instantly nodded, jumping up in joy.
She hadn't eaten lunch with her coltfriend for quite a while, and was really looking forward to it! Soarin started to walk towards the hall, gesturing for Dash to follow along. She quickly nodded, before turning to her parents.
"Do you mind if me and Soarin eat lunch early? You guys can come in when the others do." She told them. Firefly looked over to Blaze, expecting an argument to arise. But Blaze simply brushed it off with a shrug.
"Go ahead. Have fun." He said, looking back to his wife. Dash nodded in surprise, but flew off behind Soarin nevertheless.
Once they were out of sight, Firefly turned to her husband, and gave him a weird look.
"What?" Blaze asked her. Firefly raised an eyebrow.
"It's nice to see that you trust them together, finally!" She said. Blaze just gave her an obvious look, and crossed his hooves.
"Are you kidding? No way! I'm totally following them!" He said. When his wife heard this, she just groaned, and flew off to watch the other training practices.
"Woah... This place is deserted!" Dash said, as she and Soarin entered the mess hall. There was no lunch mare, but she had left a bunch of food out for the recruits to take if they were hungry. Soarin and Dash made their way to the counter, and saw the section which had the lunch for all the personally invited recruits, and the Wonderbolts.
"Yeah... We spent quite a lot of time out there, learning the tricks. The others must be in the weight room, or the gym right now with some of the other 'bolts." Soarin predicted. Dash nodded, and took a dandelion salad, while Soarin grabbed a cheese sandwich. They went to the farthest booth, and sat down besides each other.
"This is nice... We hardly ever get to eat together..." Soarin said. Dash nodded, and smiled gratefully.
"But it makes me treasure these moments even more..." She told him. Soarin grinned, and took his marefriend's hoof from under the table. He gave it a light squeeze.
"I know..." He said, using his free hoof to eat. Dash did the same, and they ate in silence, simply enjoying each other's company.
Dash leaned back onto the cushiony back of the booth, and sighed, closing her eyes. Soarin saw this, and leaned back with her. They both burped loudly.
"Excuse me..." They said at the exact same time. They stared at each other, before bursting out laughing.
Once they had calmed down, Dash laid her head on Soarin's shoulder. Soarin smiled, and put his hoof around her. It felt perfect.
It seemed as if they had everything. But what they didn't know, was that something very bad was about to happen. But, they didn't have to worry about that just yet. They were simply sitting there, snuggled up together, and taking in each other's scent.
From afar, Rainbow Blaze was watching them. And boy, he was angry. How dare this... this... MONSTER be touching his daughter like that? Blaze was extremely angry, and was losing control of his actions. He snuck down, and went inside the kitchen, where he saw just what he was looking for.
It was a knife.
