A Possible Lead

"Are you sure about this Sam?" asked Dean as they drove down the freeway in the '67 Chevy Impala, Sam pouring over their father, John Winchester’s journal.

"Well, I mean... I think we're out of options Dean, I mean, between Zachariah, Castiel and the Demons, they're all chasing us Dean, ever since Anna dropped off the radar, dad said he found something in California, around Stanford, he said he knew I’d be safe going there because of it, so whatever it is, it must be dangerous for dad to trust my safety to it."

"So, this... What, superweapon? is in California?" asked Dean, glancing at Sam confusedly.

"Apparently so." sighed Sam.

"No, you're right, it's the best lead we got, it's just, I'm tired of running." said Dean.

"Hey, you know anything that can kill an Angel? I'm all ears." said Sam.

"Yeah yeah, I get it." said Dean.

They drove in silence for a few hours before Sam spoke.

"Hey do you mind if I drop in at Stanford for a minute? I mmean that were dad journal says anyway." asked Sam.

"Why? I thought you ditched that life, you plannin' on running away again?" asked Dean jokingly.

"Ha ha ha." laughed Sam rhetorically.

They drove for a few hours until they reached their destination, they got out and presented themselves as school inspectors and they were allowed free roam of the school, Sam went to his old locker that he never cleaned out and saw it intact surprisingly, he opened it and took couple of pictures of him and his friends and Jess.

They told the school they were satisfied and left, as they sat in the car thinking, Sam spoke up.

“Well we got a big fat plate of nada.” Said Dean.

“Yeah, didn’t find anything out of the ordinary.”

Then they saw a boy walking out in a black hoodie that covered his face and he was looking around as if paranoid.

"Classes ain't over yet, right?" asked Dean to Sam.

"No, not for a few hours." said Sam, sounding enthusiastic and suspicious as he always did when they found something.

The kid got in a red convertible car and drove off, Dean left the engine off until he passed and started it when he did, staying a few car lengths behind.

"Wait... We're following a kid, because he left early... Isn't that a little weird?" asked Sam.

"Well, he was in a hurry to leave, that's for sure, plus if you go home sick, don't parents pick you up, or the school drops you off? I'm tellin' ya man, he left when we did, and the way he was looking around and behind him, he was paranoid." said Dean.

"Ok, but if we get arrested for stalking..." said Sam.

"Yeah yeah, I got it." said Dean.

"Hey, wait, did... did we leave Stanton?" asked Sam, this was weird because he never knew anyone who lived more than a couple miles from the school, this kid had drove almost 5, maybe more.

"Yeah, this kid lives a long way away, maybe he wants to be alone for a reason?" said Dean, that said to Sam ‘see, we’re getting somewhere!’

The kid then turned onto a dirt path that would only be visible if you knew it was there, Dean followed and by the time they caught up, he had parked and was inside.

“Dude.” Said Sam with a ‘really?’ look as Dean cocked his pistol.

“What? Can’t be too careful man.” Said Dean, Sam summed everything up with moving his eyes up diagonally and giving a sideways nod in reluctant agreement before getting his own pistol.

They exited the Impala and pointed their pistols, it was an unassuming cabin in the woods, which meant there was definitely something strange here.

They knocked on the door and it opened seemingly on its own, the brothers shared a look and entered.

“Hello?” asked Sam as they went in, they started to sweep the house before the door slammed behind them, they didn’t bother checking it as it most likely wouldn’t open.

“Hey Dean, look.” Said Sam and gestured with his gun, they saw all sorts of symbols, all demon repellent, as well as Angel.

“Well, he knows his stuff.” Agreed Dean in a mumble that only Sam could hear.

They entered the living room and saw the kid sitting facing away from them, leaning forward on a chair in front of a fire with his hood still up.

“Well, that’s not suspicious.” Said Dean.

“There is no need for those.” He said, suddenly the brother’s guns were next to him on the table, as he pressed a sigil, including the knife that Ruby loaned them.

“And why not?” asked Dean, not before he mouthed ‘told you!’ to Sam, who shrugged worriedly.

“Please sit.” He said and suddenly two chairs were next to him on either side.

“We’re fine.” Smiled Dean, feigning polite decline.

“You follow me home and then try to break in, you owe me some civility.” He said, he only turned his head slightly, allowing the brothers a view of his nose and mouth, but not much else.

“Sure.” Said Sam, Dean looked at him and widened his eyes and raised his eyebrows but ultimately agreed.

They sat down with him and looked at the fire, glancing at him and each other every now and then.

“So, care to explain why you followed me?” he asked.

“Well… erm, see we’re Hunters, I’m Sam, that’s Dean.” Said Sam softly, trying to keep the kid calm.

“Where are your parents?” asked Dean.

“None to speak of, looks like we have something in common.” Said the kid, never taking his eyes off the fire.

“Oh, what’s with the warding?” asked Sam.

“Well, gee, I don’t know, I thought it was nice décor… what the fuck do you think it’s for?” asked the kid and Dean made an expression that said ‘Ok… that happened…’

“Is that Enochian? How do you know it, and more importantly, who are you?” asked Sam.

“I go by Joe now.” he said.

“What did you used to go by?” asked Dean.

“Not important, I know Enochian because I was taught it, from who? I don’t know.” he said.

“Well-” started Sam before the earth moved beneath their feet.

“Could it be an earthquake?” asked Sam.

“Is it ever?” asked Dean quickly and was quickly up with Sam, surveying the room.

“Can those symbols keep them out?” asked Sam.

“No, I didn’t think I’d need to, they just mask me.” He said, not getting up, they heard the door swing open, and in walked Zachariah and Castiel.

“Ah, boys, thought we’d find you here.” Said Zach, as if talking to a misbehaving child.

“We have been tracking you for a long time now.” Said Castiel.

“And you have led us, to here.” Said Zach and raised his arms and turned around.

“Where did you learn that warding?” asked Castiel.

“They didn’t though, did they Castiel? our young friend here, in fact did.” Said Zach and approached before the brothers stood in his way.

“Come now boys, is that necessary?” asked Zach and tried to fling them with two fingers, a whooshing sound was heard, but otherwise no proof he had used magic.

“Your powers are useless here.” Said the kid, not moving from his spot, not even moving his head to address the Angel.

“Who are you?” asked Castiel dangerously.

“Nobody important.” He said.

Castiel started to approach but was blocked by the brothers.

“Move, he is not your problem, we cannot allow someone, who knows this kind of magic to roam earth free.” Said Castiel.

“So what, you gonna kill a kid? That’s not you Cass, him maybe, but not you.” Said Dean referring to Zachariah.

“What makes you so sure that’s a kid? What makes you, so sure, that is a 15 year old teenager?” asked Zach cockily.

“We’re not, but anyone who knows this kind of stuff, is worth keeping away from your junkless ass.” Said Dean.

“Dean, Dean, Dean… Dean. You really don’t know what you’ve stepped in, this supersedes you, our superiors even, this means, we have a free pass to beat the living, or even non-living crap out of you, if necessary.” Smiled Zach as if he had just made a good offer.

“Well, we’ll fight you anyway.” Said Dean with no hesitation and a smile of defiance.

“No, you won’t.” said the kid and stood up, turning to the 4.

“Please, the adults are talking, we can get to you later.” Said Zach.

“I’m not scared of you.” Said the kid and moved between the brothers.

“And what can you do? Draw some more?” asked Zach sarcastically.

“Get out.” Said the kid, a flash of light and both Castiel and Zach disappeared.

“How did-” started Sam.

“Enochian symbol of control, I can’t control them completely, but I can control where they go, but it won’t last for long, now that goes for you two as well, leave.” Said the kid and sat back down.

“What? No we- you’re in danger, they know where you are now.” Said Sam.

“And? As I said, I’m not scared.” Said the kid, again focusing on the fire.

“Look, we know you wanna stay, but you can’t, they’ll send more and eventually they’ll get to you.” Said Sam.

“I know.” Said Joe and never moved.

“Look, we’ll drag you out if we have to.” Said Dean.

“Poor Dean, trying to save someone who doesn’t want to be saved…” said Zach as he reappeared and the wall with the Enochian was cracked, Sam‘s lower jaw twitched, meaning they were in big trouble...

Zachariah flung both brothers against opposite walls.

“Now then, we can talk.” Said Zachariah.

“Sure, talk.” Said the kid and Zach sat next to him.

“Now my clever young friend, where did you learn that Enochian?” Said Zach as if speaking to a good friend.

“Nowhere.” Said the kid.

“Really?” asked Zach, sceptical of the answer.

The boy got up then and walked out of the room, and house, into the front yard, simply ignoring the Angel, and Zach teleported the brothers out as well, but they were next to the kid, not to Zach, making it seem like a standoff of sorts.

“Well boys, is this what it’s come to? Killing each other in a field? How poetic.” Said Zachariah.

“Well you know that we’re suckers for a good ending.” Said Dean.

“Well, here we go.” Said Zach and flicked his two hands as if he were a magician and the brothers went flying backwards.

“Now, again, we can talk.” Said Zachariah and flicked his fingers, but the boy barely batted an eyelash and Zach lowered his eyebrows, looking in amusement, but he was really afraid, the kid shook his head and clicked his fingers, making Zach disappear, he then pierced his hand and put an Enochian banishing sigil on a tree.

He saw the brothers run up with their weapons but look confused when only he was there.

“I sent Zachariah away with a sigil.” Lied Joe.

“Good, so now what mr. has a plan?”

“Dean, don’t be a smartass, he just saved our lives, if we hadn’t followed him we and he wouldn’t be in this situation.”

“Maybe, but they might have found me, sooner or later.” Said the kid.

“Look, we’re sorry for dragging you into it, ok? But we did and you are.” Said Dean.

“Now, we-” the kid stopped as a flash of light was seen and Castiel was there, powered up slightly from heaven granting him some extra power to deal with the kid, and with the element of surprise, flung Joe back into the house via a closed window, but then they noticed the light never left the house that Castiel used to throw him, something was wrong, and there was an earthquake, the brothers ran forwards, Sam cut his hand and hit the sigil and sent Castiel away before he could get the kid or them, and they ran back into the house and found Joe getting up in the living room from the glass that littered the floor.

“What happened?” yelled Dean over the noise of collapsing… ground?

“I think Cass set something off!” exclaimed Sam over the sound, they had the feeling they weren’t going to last long in here judging by the way the house was shaking and creaking violently from the very rapidly moving ground

“The magic here was been released, we’ve got to go-” Joe cut off as the light exploded and the ground opened up beneath the house, seemingly swallowing them whole...
