Forgive Me for Being So Blind

Previous ChapterPrincess Celestia reviewed the royal duties of the day, drawing a small cup of tea to her lips and turning the scroll over in her magic. It had been several decades since the Princesses' coronation, and the restoration of Equestria was practically complete. The sisters had faced some difficulties, freeing the Crystal ponies from their dark ruler and dispelling Tirek and his brother, but all together the alicorns had proved capable in their leadership. The sun had risen nearly a half hour prior, and Celestia looked up from her scroll for a moment as Princess Luna approached.
"Good morning, sister. We trust the night was well?" Luna stifled a yawn.
"T'was as any other night, sister. However the Timber wolves again lurked on the edge of our borders." The dark alicorn sighed and lowered her voice. "We understand that the Tree of Harmony is valuable, but must our castle have been built in such close proximity? The Everfree Forest is dangerous, and 'tis one of the few places we could not remove Discord's magic. It seems that this forest is cursed." Celestia set her tea down, raising a front hoof and smiling.
"Come, Luna. 'Tis rather late to change the castle's location, does thou not think?" Luna rolled her eyes, but Celestia giggled. "Worry not, sister, thy wards shall protect our residence and the denizens within." The younger princess scoffed.
"We know that, Celestia! We art not a fool. Our magic is strong enough to withstand those simple beasts. 'Tis merely an annoyance." Luna yawned. "We must retire until evening. We shalt see thou then." Celestia dipped her head and her sister turned away, trotting at a moderate pace to her bedroom. Celestia rose from her throne and stepped onto the balcony, affection filling her heart as the sleepy town below began to waken. Rolling the scroll on her throne neatly, Celestia spread her wings and glided down onto the streets below, saying kind words to her subjects. Ponies who were in her presence greeted her warmly.
"Good morning, Princess!"
"The sunlight is most refreshing indeed, Your Highness!"
"Tis a beautiful day, Princess!"
"Thy sun shines so brightly, Your Majesty!"
Celestia took each compliment with good grace, returning the compliment whenever she could. The Princess admitted that the warm sunshine on her back was lovely, and would often pay respects to the weather ponies for such a fine, clear day. The younger princess watched all of this from her window in the castle, noting as she did everyday that their subjects were quick to greet the morning and to offer kind words to Celestia. Luna turned away from the window and drew the shutters tight, engulfing the room in the darkness she was much more familiar with. The blue mare closed her eyes, the loneliness in her heart swelling as she remembered the strictly polite words, the emptiness of the night save for the few uncivilized creatures that roamed the Everfree. The tired pony pulled the blanket tightly around her and sighed.
'Nopony is ever wake long enough to enjoy the wonders our night has to offer...'
