Chapter 1 Our new friend, a spark of hope atlast?
A gray unicorn with yellow eyes stepped out of a cave, shutting his eyes against the blinding sunlight. His mane and tail are a darker gray, with his mane being in the Twilight-style and his tail in the rainbow dash-style. His cutiemark was a purple swirl. Next to him hovers a silver parasprite with brown eyes. The unicorn yawns, blinking a few times.
"Vortex? What are you waiting for?" The parasprite asks. The gray pony sighs.
"I'm worried, what if we don't find anything to eat?"
"Don't be such a downer! We've always found food before!" The parasprite exclaims happily. Dark Vortex turns his head to face his friend.
"Ricki, how can you be so positive? A changeling could get us at any moment!" Ricki rolled his eyes.
"We'd see them coming from miles away! Come on, let's go get some food."
"Okay." Dark Vortex mumbled. He followed Ricki as they left the savety of the cave.
Intermission
A few dead tree's stood on the red, rocky surface of the badlands. Dark Vortex always felt sad when he passed them, they had once been living things. Now, they were lucky the sun hadn't burnt them to a crisp.
"This place never changes, does it?" Ricki asked sadly. Dark vortex nodded slightly in response.
The two stopped to take a drink from a puddle of water. It took them a few more hours before finding a small berry bush. The berries were completely dry but still edible. They quickly ate and threw the seeds on the ground, hoping that new bushes would grow. This is how they had spent every day, with the occasional hiding from changelings. Dark Vortex was a unicorn with formidable powers, but he didn't have the courage to fight. Ricki did, but he was just a parasprite. A ball of fur with wings.
The cave they lived in wasn't all that cozy, but it was a safe place to hide. True, it did get very cold during the winter, but Dark Vortex just used his magic to stay warm. Winter, a time were young fouls should be playing in the snow. Snow, Dark Vortex had never seen such a thing, nor any of the other ponies who lived in the badlands. There was no time for fun, survival was the top priority of any creature.
Intermission
The sun had already begun to set as the two friends finally returned home. It took Ricki about half an hour to convince Dark Vortex that nothing would attack him in his sleep. The cowardly pony retreated to the end of the cave and laid down. Ricki flew over to him and positioned himself on his friend's horn.
"Goodnight, my dear Vortex." And with that statement, he began humming a soothing tune. Eventually, he started whistling too. And despite Dark Vortex's fears, he fell asleep with Ricki still on his horn.
Intermission
The next day, the sun shined even brighter than the day before. However, Ricki managed to coax his unicorn friend to go outside and look for food. They quickly ducked behind a rock when they heard somepony shouting.
"Get off me, you pests!" It was a female voice. Both Ricki and Dark Vortex raised their heads a little above the rock. A red alicorn was fighting off a bunch of changelings, all on her own. Her cutiemark was a black spider. She had a short, black mane. And a long, sleek, black tail. Her light-blue eyes burned with rage. She kicked with her hindlegs, sending one of her attackers to Celestia knows where. Her horn began to glow a white color. She fired a beam of magic to every changeling that dared approach her. It wasn't too long before she had managed to kill or scare them all off. Then, her eyes found Dark Vortex. She didn't hesitate before firing a beam at him, too. The unicorn's horn began to glow, and he levitated himself into the air, avoiding the alicorn's attack.
"You can fly!?" She gasped. Dark Vortex brought himself back to the ground.
"Umm, I guess I can." He said in a small voice.
"who are you?" She asked. He shyly rubbed the ground with his left hoof and didn't answer.
"His name Is Dark Vortex and I'm Ricki!" The parasprite said, hovering in front of the other pony.
"What's a parasprite doing here?" She asked, completely ignoring Ricki's introduction.
"We're best friends!" Ricki answered, pointing to himself and Dark Vortex.
"A pony and a parasprite? That's a new one." The alicorn mused.
"So, what's your name?" Ricki asked her.
"My name is Scarlet."
"You looked pretty cool fighting those changelings, right Vortex?" At the mention of his name, the unicorn looked up and nodded. Scarlet thought for a moment.
"Would you two like to help me make my dream come true?"
"What is your dream?" Ricki asked. Scarlet's eyes began to shine.
"I want to build a town were everypony will be safe. Somewhere no changeling can harm anypony."
"That's a pretty good dream." Dark Vortex interrupted.
"Thanks, 'Tex." He smiled a little at the nickname. "I think we know a place to start, we can lead you to it." He offered.
"Vortex, I'm tired!" Ricki complained.
"Really? Well, okay then." He opened his mouth and Ricki flew in.
"Did you...Did you just eat your friend?" Scarlet looked confused.
"Don't worry, he's in a separate chamber in my body."
"You're a strange bunch, but I'll come with you."
Intermission
Dark Vortex led his new friend to a place, shielded by giant red rocks. Scarlet gasped.
"This is perfect! Thank you!" She exclaimed. They spent the rest of the day building two little huts.
Dark Vortex smiled, maybe there was hope afterall?
