The night had been a terrible time of tossing and turning for Twilight, who found that she couldn’t get to sleep. As excited as she’d been to get to studying, she’d been unable to actually focus on the books in front of her eyes. She’d tried retrieving a different doll from her closet, but reading with Mr. Elephant just hadn’t been the same. When her mom finally came in and said it was time for her to go to bed, Twilight couldn’t remember a thing she’d read. She’d brushed her teeth and crawled into bed miserably, missing her favorite study buddy and hoping that she’d think of a way to get him back the next day without having to wear the diaper.

She did finally manage to sleep, but by the time she was actually snoring on her pillow, the birds outside were starting to chirp, and not long after her alarm was starting to buzz - Something she totally missed.

Twilight only woke up when her mom came in and shook her awake, saying, “Twilight. Twilight! You’re going to be late for school!”

That woke Twilight up, and she jolted up shouting, “I’m awake!” Looking at her clock, she saw it was nearly eight - It was a fifteen minute walk to school, which started at eight thirty, so she’d barely have time to get ready and go.

Frowning, Twilight Velvet said, “Are you okay, sweetie? You look a little…”

“I didn’t sleep too well,” Twilight said, quickly. It was true, after all, and she couldn’t have her mom thinking she was sick. If Twilight Velvet thought that her daughter was sick, that would mean staying home from school, which was terrible any day but especially bad on the day she needed to rescue Smarty Pants.

Hopping out of bed, Twilight Sparkle put on a smile and tried to look cheerful and energetic. “I’m fine! Let me just get dressed and I’ll be ready to go.”

Velvet frowned in motherly concern, but then nodded, turned to walk towards the door, and said, “I’ll go make you some cereal. Don’t take too long, now.”

“I won’t!” Twilight said, speeding around and past her mother to get to the bathroom across the hall, so she could brush her teeth. She’d normally take her time, wash up a bit, use the toilet, but in the hurry she was in, she decided that her usual procedure for getting ready could be thrown out the window, and she just hurriedly brushed her teeth, gargled a bit of sink water, and ran back to her room to get dressed.

The diaper almost made her late by itself. She’d briefly glanced at it last night, before tucking it under her bed so her family wouldn’t see, but she’d not taken the time to figure out how to put it on. The darn thing didn’t go on like a skirt or pants, and figuring out which way it was supposed to face and then pulling it on took several minutes longer than it should have. She lacked foal powder, but that wasn’t something that Twilight really noticed.

Tugging her tail through the little hole available, she got to her hooves, wobbling a bit as she compensated for the extra bulk between her hind legs, and then she got dressed in the rest of her school uniform.

While the diaper certainly wasn’t made to be discreet, the plaid skirt on Twilight’s uniform mostly managed to cover up the white padding. Mostly. If anypony was looking for it they’d spot it in a heartbeat, but Twilight hoped she could keep her back to a wall or stay sitting down whenever possible. There was nothing to do for the soft plasticy crinkle it made when she moved around, but that would hopefully be covered up by the hustle and bustle of schoolfillies going about their business.

All dressed, with her diaper covered up as much as ponily possible, Twilight shouldered her backpack, made sure she wasn’t forgetting anything, and hurried downstairs.

Night Light had already left for work, going in a little early that morning, but Shining Armor was finishing up a bowl of oat cereal as Twilight Sparkle hurried into the kitchen, hopping up onto a chair in one leap and grabbing a spoon so she could down her own bowl.

“Peanut Butter and Jelly for lunch,” Twilight Velvet said, setting a little brown bag on the table with ‘Twilight Sparkle’ written on it in blue marker.

Twilight Sparkle didn’t respond, too busy downing the cereal to answer, but once she finished the bowl (In record time, too,) she grabbed the bag and hopped off the chair, saying, “Thanks mom! See you later!” Then, she took off for school, disappearing out the back door at a full sprint.

Twilight Velvet smiled, sighing contentedly. “They grow up so fast,” she commented to nopony in particular, though Shining Armor made a noise of acknowledgement as he rinsed his own cereal bowl in the sink and started walking to leave. Velvet continued, nostalgically. “Today she’s running off to school, learning all kinds of new magic, but it seems like just yesterday she was still in diapers.”

“Yeah, sure mom,” Shining Armor said, not really paying attention as he, too, headed out to school. Of course, there was no irony to her statement at all. None. At all. Really.

...

It wasn’t a long walk to school, but with the obtrusive diaper between Twilight’s legs making her waddle and announcing its presence with a noisy crinkle, Twilight felt the full length of the walk. She was glad she didn’t run into any other students on the way, but that was only a small consolation. The Canterlot suburb had plenty of people out and about in the morning heading to work, running errands, going to school themselves, but most schoolfillies her age had already left so that they wouldn’t be late.

Arriving at the big brick building which constituted the private school’s campus, Twilight hesitated, her horn glowing for a moment as she tugged the back of her skirt down a little to help cover up the bulky padding. It was either go in now or else find a dumpster out back, toss the diaper, be late for class, and probably never see Smarty Pants again.

Swallowing, she made sure nopony was walking behind her and trotted up to the schoolhouse, holding her bookbag tight. The schoolhouse doors were well oiled and lighter than her door at home, so she’d never had any trouble pushing it open or shut with her magic, but she was so distracted that she nearly walked straight into the schoolhouse door anyways, only stopping and hesitating at the last second, horn glowing again as she pushed open the door and strolled inside.

The clock on the wall let Twilight know she only had five minutes to get to class, which was way less time than she wanted. She liked to get to class ten minutes early, organize her notes, and review the reading material and her homework before it started, not show up with only a couple minutes to spare.

Hurrying to her locker, she stored most of her books, saving only the one on magical theory that she needed for first period. Turning to hurry down the hall, she tried not to run - It made her waddle more pronounced, and it was against the rules. She wanted to join the Hall Monitors once she was old enough, no reason to get on their bad side.

As she passed the Fillies’ room, though, a filly she didn’t recognize suddenly stopped in front of her, spinning so that she was almost nose to nose with Twilight. She was bigger than Twilight, maybe a grade above her, with a white coat and blue mane, though her cutie mark was concealed beneath the plaid school uniform, just like everypony else’s. (That was intentional, the School’s stance was that it fostered unhealthy competition.)

“Inside,” the filly commented, pushing open the bathroom door with a hoof, rather than her horn. “Now.”

Twilight froze, glancing to the side, but nopony else in the hall seemed not to care or notice.

“If you want your stupid doll back, you’ll hurry up,” The filly repeated, frowning.

Nodding quickly, Twilight said, “Uh… Okay,” and stepped inside, hearing the door shut behind her as the filly followed her in.

Two other fillies were waiting inside, a pink and purple pony Twilight barely recognized, and one of Twilight’s classmates from third period, a filly with a pale green coat and dark brown mane.

“Oh my gosh, she actually wore it!” The white filly behind Twilight giggled, lifting the back of Twilight’s skirt with her hoof so she could get a clear view of the diaper.

“Seriously? Let me see!” The pink one said, leaning to her left so she could peek at Twilight’s backside and see the white padding peeking out. That filly laughed, and the green pony smirked a bit, though she at least declined to comment.

“That means I won the bet, Trust,” The white filly added, smirking as Twilight pulled away, backing up against a stall door.

Twilight finally remembered why she recognized the pink filly, her name was Trust Fund, her dad had donated a bunch of money to the school and given a big speech on the first day about the importance of education. “Nuh-uh,” Trust Fund said, after a minute. “You said she’d do anything for the doll, Top Line, all she’s done is wear the diaper.”

“You have Smarty Pants?” Twilight asked, hopefully, noting that the white pony was apparently named Top Line. “Can I have her back?”

“She’s in my locker,” the green filly said, answering Twilight’s first question. “But I’m not supposed to give her-”

“Shut up, Obsequity,” Top Line said, rolling her eyes as she looked at Twilight. “So what’re you saying, Trust?”

“That I bet by the end of the day we can get her to give up,” Trust Fund said, smirking as she took a step closer to Twilight.

Twilight glanced away, not wanting to hold eye contact with any of them for too long, holding her book close to her chest in an unconscious defensive gesture. “I… We’re going to be late for class. Can I please have Smarty Pants back?”

Trust Fund shook her head, smirking and giggling as Twilight blushed. “Let me see the diaper,” she said, making a motion with her hoof so Twilight would turn around. Twilight obeyed, and after a gesture from Trust Fund, the other two fillies crowded around, giggling. Trust fund prodded the padding with a foreleg, making it crinkle which in turn made Twilight blush and shy away.

“I told you, she’s a pushover,” Top Line said, snickering. “And a huge foal, too, I mean who else plays with her dolls once they’re her age?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Trust Fund replied, apparently satisfied with what she saw. “Well then, if you want your stupid doll back, you’ll wear that diaper for the rest of the school day. Between the three of us, we’re in pretty much all your classes, so we’ll notice if you cheat. If you take it off, even for a minute, your doll is toast.”

Twilight made a squeaky noise, paling. How was she supposed to wear the diaper all day? Everypony would see! Worse, she had to pee, and she wasn’t sure if she could pull the diaper around her ankles to use the bathroom and pull it back in place properly.

Then, before she could ask anymore questions, the bell rang. All four fillies in the bathroom looked up at the sudden noise, then at each other, realizing that they were all going to get in trouble if they didn’t hoof it to class. They all galloped out the door and scurried to class, leaving Twilight in the dust as she tried her best to run with the fluffy bulk between her hind legs.

Smarty Pants stolen, wearing a diaper to school, and now she was going to be late to class.

Worst. Day. Ever.
