Chapter 1: Midnight

It was dark.

For the first time in many days, it was dark. After all, today was Night Day. The only day of the year to be nighttime. It was bit of a contradictory name, sure, but it was still a happy day.  Everypony had a day off to sleep in peace. It's very hard to sleep in the day.

It was going to be dark for the entire day. This is why it is the unicorn, Midnight Blue's, favorite day. He was the secret and sole student of the Night Princess. His cutie mark was a waning crescent moon with a five pointed star next to it, in the cradle of the moon's curve. He got it on his very first Night Day, when he was just a little foal. If Supernova knew about it, she would have him executed. To prevent slow, painful death by stoning, he wore a cloak to cover his flank. The cloak was the color of a cloudy night sky, which his parents had told him about when he was young. His namesake coat color combined well with his slightly lighter blue and purple mane.

Midnight woke up to see Princess Luna descending from the sky, her mane having been devoid of magic for years. The princess of the night had lived in exile for many years, cast out by the corrupt Supernova. Supernova Star was once a kind and benevolent ruler known as Celestia. Now, her flaming mane and bright coat commanded respect from all.

As Luna descended, Midnight called his brother, Morning Streak. He was the polar opposite of Midnight, with a sunny yellow coat and carefree attitude. Even stranger, he was a pegasus. He had a kind air about him, with a cutie mark of a fluffy white cloud with the Sun peeking out from behind. Morning Streak didn't like Night Day. He loved the day, but even he knew Supernova was an awful pony.

Midnight and Morning saw Luna standing next to the window, which was wider than Midnight thought, apparently.

"Midnight and his brother. How nice to see you, for it's been so long," Luna said.

"Princess, you know I study for you, after all, I'm still your student," Midnight stated. "Right?"

"Yes, however, now is not about your studies. This is about my sister," Luna said, rather bluntly.

Midnight gasped. Luna never talked about her sister. This had to have been something very important.

"We need to retrieve the Elements. I trust you know what I am talking about?" Luna asked.

"Yes, I do remember, from the books you gave me. The Elements of Harmony have the power to dispel evil. Do we have to use them on Supernova?" Midnight asked urgently.

"Yes. I have found five ponies to bear the Elements and defeat her. Your brother is one of them," Luna said.

"What?!" Midnight and Morning said in unison.

"Yes, you and your brother are both representatives of an Element of Harmony. I shall let you figure out which one for yourself," Luna said.

Midnight was shocked. He and his brother were completely different, and he could not understand why they were both an Element. Perhaps it was just personality, after all, Morning was compassionate and caring, maybe he represented Kindness. However, Midnight had no idea what Element he might be. He tended to be studious, and not interact with much of anyone besides his brother.

"You must go into the Everfree Forest to find the Elements, as soon as I bring the other ponies here. My sister has hidden them there," Luna told Midnight. "The Elements, that is. Not the ponies."

Midnight wondered. Who could these ponies be? He didn't know anypony in Ponyville, or anywhere else for that matter, besides Luna and Morning Streak.

"One of the ponies live in Ponyville, on lives far north, in Vahnhoover, and two of them live in Baltimare. They are fillies." Luna said.

"Fillies?" Midnight asked. "How can two little fillies represent the spirit of an Element?"

"I will explain later, Midnight. For now, I must go, and bring the ponies here," Luna said.
