Chapter 3: Mist

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Misted Breeze lived far north, in Vahnhoover. Yes, such a place did exist, look on a map. It was cold, and not very populous, but he didn't mind. There was snow everywhere, but Mist's eyes couldn't see it. His eyes were clouded, unusable. He didn't care, for it didn't stop the grounded pony. He didn't have to fly, or use magic. He couldn't. He was a strong pony, and the earth beneath his hooves showed him where to go. He didn't need eyes to see, the ground gave that ability to him.

Mist lived in a house on the outskirts of the town, and he didn't interact with other ponies very often. He had been told that he was too blunt, and needed to speak figuratively. He never got why; his parent had always taught him to be honest. Yes, parent, singular, as Mist's mother died during childbirth. Then again, Mist's father also told him that there used to be a second princess, called Luna, who had the most beautiful mane, according to him. She ruled over the night, whatever that was. Mist had not heard of Night Day, since he was blind and didn't interact with other ponies.

Luna was tired from flying so far. Vahnhoover was almost as far away as the Crystal North, which had resurfaced recently. The evil King Sombra was stopped by her sister before he could do anything. In fact, the nightmare door that led to the staircase to the Crystal Heart was what caused Celestia to turn into Supernova in the first place. Alas, Luna had arrived at a house on the edge of Vahnhoover. She flew through the window, which was open, for some strange reason. She called out to Mist:

"Misted Breeze, it is Luna, princess of the night! I have come to give important news."

"Luna? From Father's stories? I always thought he had made it up. What is night?" Mist inquired, sincerely not believing that Princess Luna was here, and really not knowing what a night was.

"Yes, I am that Luna. A night is, or at least, was, a dark time of day in which everypony sleeps. I have come to tell you something." Luna said.

"Well, out with it." Mist replied.

"You are an Element of Harmony." Luna stated.

"Sounds important. What's that?" asked Mist, quizzically.

"The Elements of Harmony are magical gems that can be used to destroy or reform evil. For example, my sister, the tyrant." Luna said with scorn.

"So, let us go," Mist told her.

"Not yet. Wait here, there is one more pony I must retrieve," Luna said.

"As you wish, Princess."

Luna flew off, heading back to Ponyville. She had just realized that she could have started there to begin with, instead of going all over Equestria. That would have been a lot easier for her. Alas, it was too late, and she left, thinking deeply about the recent events, about her sister, and about the bearers of the Elements of Harmony. She wondered if they could stop her sister in time.
