Spike is older and is still after Rarity until Twilight tells him information that forces him to give Rarity up. He ends up finding out who his real special somepony is and when he does all hell breaks lose when king Sombra returns! King Sombra wants revenge for being sent back to the darkness, he joins forces with Queen Chrysalis. Spike has to join the main 6 in stopping king Sombra and not only does it push Spike's relationship to the limit but as the fateful encounter approaches the situation becomes more dire than ever before...
