Not all universes are created the same, after all, and the dimensional differences between versions of an alicorn can result in each one controlling merely an aspect of a domain rather than the whole thing. Cases like these have been known to display a fascinating phenomenon upon their activation, where each instance of the alicorn is subsequently attracted to its counterpart across the multiverse, and upon their meeting, they are both compelled to activate their shared domain and assume its power.
The method of said activation likely varies on the domain in question, and it is yet unknown whether or not factors like primary or secondary domain hold significance. However, it has been reported that the longer amount of time a domain has gone unrealized, the more... intense the shared ascension becomes.

Solaris shifted his weight a bit, his expression becoming suddenly unsure. “You know… if we both have access to this place, then there’s a good likelihood we have access to each other’s realities, as well. We could possibly set something up where we could come visit each other. See how things work and all that.”
Celestia thought about that for a moment. “You know, that might be interesting. It also would allow us to help each other out if anything ever goes wrong in either of our realms.”

It took a handful of ‘diplomatic discussions’ for Celestia and Solaris to work the tensions out of their systems. However, when they tried to go back to their respective realities, a very unique problem presented itself.

Or at least, they were in the normal sense. Yes they could return as they were, but doing so would likely destroy everything as soon as they appeared. So, they had to ‘get dressed,’ in a whole new meaning of the term.
Taking their forms that now spanned the breadth of the realm, they did their best to use their newfound power to force themselves down back into a manageable size. More than once they lost concentration as their power was compressed and it reflexively burst out of them again like a muscle, but they kept at it. In fact the first couple of times that they managed to get back into a physical body they just detonated immediately as soon as they stopped focusing. Their success however only grew as they practiced, though and while exploding back to their full form from every accidental twitch or spasm also exacerbated their insatiable libidos, they were learning to control that, too.

“Agreed,” Solaris said with a gentle grasp at his groin. His bulk that was far more masculine than his more lithe brother now, the toned muscles shifting under his skin as he tried not to subconsciously flex his newfound strength that threatened to explode from his body with every motion. “This’ll take some time to get used to.”
Celestia let her aura suffuse her and allowed clothes to appear over her form. “So, is this finally our long goodbye?”

At least one is realized upon ascension (for that is what triggers it in the first place) but the second may lay dormant for decades, centuries, even millennia before it awakens. The reason why this happens isn’t fully understood, but one theory is that it is a safety mechanism of sorts, a failsafe of destiny that waits until the time is right. Certain magics or states of mind have been found to contribute to this protective dormancy, and these barriers may be active without even the alicorn’s knowledge. In fact, before this writing it was not even postulated all alicorns have two domains, and as a result, some have gone impressive spans of time without realizing their true potential.
However, it also should be noted that in these instances of extended inactivity, the alicorn’s second domain was not found to be lacking. It may never actually be known for certain what awakens a secondary domain, but it is this author’s theory that, like primary domains, secondaries merely require a simple trigger, requirement, or catalyst, to be released.
If this is the case, then that trigger could range from something as complex as creating a new spell, to something as simple as adopting a certain mindset.

Celestia stared up at the ceiling with unfocused eyes. “Night and Dreams, Love and Sex, Friendship and Magic… and me, with the Day.” She couldn’t be happier that those three had grown into their power and now held mastery over their dual domains, but a small part of her wondered why she still had only one. She was technically their lesser now because of it, and while none of them would ever admit such a thing (or likely even see themselves as such) it didn’t stop it from being the truth.
“How quickly things can change...” Celestia wasn’t sure how she’d feel if any of them did try to claim superiority over her, but the longer she thought about it, the more that she realized... she wouldn’t care in the slightest. She might even welcome it, in fact! She’d had the throne to herself for one thousand exhausting years, so if somepony else wanted to take the reins from her, they could have it with their blessing.
“Maybe this is a sign,” she thought aloud. “A sign to let things change. I’ve been doing this for so long, and carrying this burden by myself has gotten so old… do they even really need me anymore?”
