Chapter 14-Sawyer versus Mason

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

As Swampert and Sceptile stood on opposite ends of the field, Steven and Ash looked with interest at the two Trainers.

"I know Sawyer." Ash said. "He won't go down without a fight."

"And I know Mason." Steven replied. Neither will he."

As Brock called for the battle to begin, both Trainers smiled at their opponent.

"Alright, Swampert, Barrier!" Mason yelled. Swampert nodded and raised its fists horizontally. A light blue screen appeared, and Swampert glowed red, his Defense stat raised.

"Sceptile, Dragon Claw!" Sawyer cried. Sceptile's claws grew large, and he slashed at Swampert. Swampert flinched, but as a result of his defense being raised, he took less damage from the attack.

"Swampert, Earthquake!" Mason called. Swampert slammed his fists into the ground, and the earth began to shake and move. Sceptile took damage from the Ground-type attack, but he soon steadied himself.

"Leaf Storm!" Sawyer ordered. Sceptile summoned a cyclone of leaves and shot them at his opponent. Swampert furrowed his eyes, knowing the Grass-type attack could easily knock him out.

"Sludge Wave!" Mason responded. Swampert summoned a ball of purplish-black acid, and sprayed it against the Grass-type move. The resulting collision locked the two Pokemon in place.

"I see." Sawyer said. "As a Water and Ground type, Swampert's only weakness is Grass. By using Poison moves, he counters that weakness by using a move that Grass-types are weak to. And by raising his defense, he managed to give himself a leg up."

"Not bad." Mason replied. "You analyze your opponent's Pokemon effectively, Sawyer. However…"

Swampert then leaped into the air, and roared.

"This battle has only just begun. Swampert, Earthquake and Sludge Wave combo!"

Swampert slammed into the ground once more, and then unleashed the Poison-move. As the ground-type move damaged Sceptile, making him flinch, the poisonous liquid hit Sceptile, full-force. As Sceptile leaped out of the way, Sawyer growled.

"A combination attack, huh?" He said quietly. "Sceptile, Leaf Blade!"

Sceptile rushed forward, the leaves on his wrists merging and glowing bright. As he prepared to slam them into Swampert, Mason smiled.

"Swampert, Muddy Water!" Mason cried. Swampert formed a sphere of muddy liquid and blasted Sceptile, full in the face. As Sceptile leaped away, Sawyer saw a thick coat of mud obscuring Sceptile's eyes.

"He lowered Sceptile's accuracy by using that move!" Sawyer cried. "Alright, Sceptile, let's go!"

As Sawyer drew his Key Stone from his journal, Mason tapped his own Key Stone on his Mega Bracelet. The yellow beams of energy cascaded from each Key Stone and bonded with the beams coming from the Pokemon's Mega Stones. As they linked, the two Pokemon grew larger and changed into their Mega Forms. Sceptile and Sawyer watched as Swampert's arms and fists grew larger, and Swampert hunched over, a result of Mega Evolution increasing his size.

"Rain Dance!" Mason yelled. Swampert formed a ball of water vapor in his right fist, and threw it into the sky, which clouded over and began to rain.

"Why did he make it rain?" Rarity asked.

"You see, Rain Dance not only makes it rain, it boosts the power of Water-type moves." Steven said. "I see why Mason did it. Water moves aren't effective against Grass-types like Sceptile, so giving his Water moves a boost in power is a welcome advantage."

"Hmm…" Sawyer said. "Stay on your guard, Mega Sceptile!"

"Tile!" Sceptile responded.

"Now, Ice Punch!" Mason yelled.

"ICE PUNCH?" Sawyer said, shocked as Mega Swampert cloaked his fist in frost and lunged, punching Swampert in the chest at blinding speed. As Sceptile was sent flying, Twilight gasped.

"How'd Swampert move so fast?" Twilight asked.

"Swift Swim." May replied.

"Swift Swim?" Twilight asked.

"That's Mega Swampert's Ability." May replied. "A Pokemon with Swift Swim gets a speed boost when it rains. Now, Sawyer is in real trouble. Apart from Swampert knowing an Ice move, which is double as effective against a Grass and Dragon type like Sceptile, Swampert is now a great deal faster."

"Indeed." Steven said. "This battle isn't over, not by a long shot."

"Use Dragon Claw!" Sawyer yelled. Sceptile recovered from taking the Ice-type move and lunged again.

"Ice Punch!" Mason responded. Swampert used its greater speed to dodge Sceptile's attack, before landing a second Ice Punch. As the two Pokemon dodged and weaved, landing their attacks in an almost beautiful dance, Mason smiled.

"Let's end this! Swampert! Ice Punch and Hammer Arm combo!" Mason cried. Swampert cloaked his fist in orange energy, before the ice covered it, and he leaped into the air. Sceptile unleashed Frenzy Plant, as Sawyer ordered, and Mega Swampert dodged the thrashing vines with ease before slamming his fist into Sceptile's chest, kicking up a large explosion of dust. As the Rain Dance stopped and the dust settled, Sawyer gasped. Sceptile lay unconscious under Swampert's fist.

"Sceptile is unable to battle!" Brock called. "Mason wins!"

As everyone watching clapped and cheered, Swampert helped Sceptile to his feet, as their Mega Forms faded, returning them to normal.

"That was a great battle, Sawyer." Mason said, extending his hand. "I would be honored to battle again sometime."

"And I earned lots of Experience from this." Sawyer said, taking Mason's hand and shaking it. "I hope we can battle again."

As Swampert and Sceptile shook hands, Mason stretched and then, his stomach rumbled, along with Ash and Sawyer's.

"Looks like someone's hungry." Twilight said.

"Cookout, anyone?" Brock asked.

"Sure." Ash said. As everyone split up to gather supplies, a Fly Drone watched from a tree. It sent the feed of the battle to Corvo, before flying away.
