Who You Are
Prologue
Load Full StoryNext ChapterMy name is Sunlight Shimmer. Some name, huh? I mean, I could've been called Ella, Evie or maybe Emily. I mostly like names and words that start with an E. It adds an elegant touch to everything. But no. My parents just had to call me Sunlight. Sunlight Shimmer. I wonder if my name has a meaning. For example, it could be the light of the sun shimmering in the sky. But I'm just saying, it's not like it ACTUALLY meant that. Otherwise, it would be...exciting? I don't really know which word to use and it HAS to start with an E, because those words are always so...eccentric. Let's just assume that, but E words are way more than exciting and eccentric.
But let's go back to the beggining: I'm Sunlight Shimmer. I'm currently in 9th grade and I'm almost fourteen years old. I live in Happy Person City. Believe it or not, that's the real name of the city and people aren't even happy there. Every day, I hear loads of cars honking their horns and I even hear people shouting angrily. It should've been called Angry Person City.
So, in HPC, I live with my aunt Starla and my older sister Sunset Shimmer. We've been living with our aunt for quite a long time. I don't really like telling people why I live with her, but I guess it'll be okay if I say it once to the person or people who are reading this. Speaking of which, I'm trying to "write my thoughts inside a notebook". I don't exactly know what use it could be in the future, but it feels great to finally tell someone about my life.
The reason why my sister and I live with our maternal aunt is because...our parents died in a plane crash. I was about five years old when it happened and my sister was around nine. When we found out about it, my sister was depressed for two months and I always cried to sleep every night, so then aunt Starla, my mom's sister, let us stay with her. Sunset felt a lot better after moving in with her, but I didn't change that much. I still continued to cry every night. Aunt Starla tried to help me psychologically and a few things changed about me. I didn't really cry anymore, but I was still grieving for my parents.
Which brings me to this: I'm also being bullied at school. Maybe you think that I'm a beautiful girl with shiny aquamarine eyes and cool nerd glasses, but then we'd be talking about my sister.
I admire my sister a lot and I've ALWAYS wanted to be just like her: confident, brave, selfless, quick-witted and supportive. I mean, she always gave me support when I needed it most and she gave me good advice for...everything. In short, she's the best big sister I've ever had, even though I only have one!
Nevertheless, even when my sister was there for me, I still got bullied at school. Sometimes, I feel like the whole world is against me...what did I do? I mean, I wouldn't say that the WHOLE world's holding a grudge against me, but that's how I sort of feel when some kids bully me.
Come to think of it, I've always wondered why I get bullied so much. I don't know if I'll ever find the answer to it, because I still don't know why every student at my school hates me. Sure, I get straight As in every subject and I'm pretty good at sports (which explains my tomboyish personality and style), but I don't see why anyone would abhor me. Although, I don't really like my physical traits.
I think that I'm too tall and that my hair looks awful! I mean, short blonde hair? I don't think I've heard about worse hairstyles than what I have. In fact, this is exactly why I'm a victim of bullying. I think. Students criticize me a lot about my look and tend to call me weird names, which I was not able to tolerate, of course. In short, every day at school was a holy visit to hell. But today was different: it wasn't a day like the others. I sure was freaked out.
It was during my second class of the day, which was P.E. My teacher was shouting to keep jogging around the gymnasium and boy, was it big! I was still jogging, but my heart was beating so fast that I thought that I'd puke. So, I stopped running, bent down and put my hands on my knees to get my energy back.
That's when Mrs Hoovesley, the school's principal, said something that was heard through the speakers in the gymnasium. Her stern voice echoed, which paralyzed the students - it happened everytime the principal announced something.
"Sunlight Shimmer is reported to the principal's office. I repeat, Sunlight Shimmer is reported to the principal's office.", she said.
I stood up properly and started to panic. I looked around the gymnasium to see if she wasn't referring to another Sunlight Shimmer. Nope, the eyes of all the students AND the teacher were on me. Well, now you can clearly understand that I hate going to the principal's office. It always freaked me out for some reason. I've never really been there, but from the experiences of many students, I figured out that it was the scariest place ever.
Practically everybody in my class once had a tiny trip to the principal's office. Cherry Belle went there because she hurt a person and had to apologize to him. Benny Whinesberg crapped his pants at school and was sent home. The more bad experiences I count, the more scared I feel.
My P.E teacher had her arms crossed and she also told me to go to the office. I gulped and went towards the door that would soon get me out of here. I heard whispers behind my back, but I tried to ignore them as much as I could. Finally, I turned the doorknob and went outside the gymnasium. Well, that was a first - I was able to exit the gym and now I was in the dark, obscure halls of the school...yikes. But I tried to be brave, just like my sister and walked to the office. Then, I noticed that the door was completely closed. Since I was a tall person, I looked through the office's door's window and...I saw Mrs Hoovesley talking and laughing with...
"Aunt Starla.", I whispered.
Suddenly, the door opened and I saw Mrs Hoovesley. Now, this is where the weird part comes.
"Top of the morning to ya, Sunny!", she said with the most bizarre smile ever.
