Who You Are
Chapter 2: The First Day At A New School
Previous ChapterBEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
Yes, the alarm just rang and you might think that I'm desperately trying to sleep for at least five more minutes. Well, you're right. After seven and a half hours of sleeping, my mind is still saying: "I WANT TO SLEEP MORE!".
Since I did have school today, I decided to get out of my (super comfy) bed, much to my ire. That's when I noticed that my sister was nowhere to be seen.
I was positive that she didn't leave for school yet and that she was still inside the apartment, so I reluctantly changed myself, brushed my teeth and my hair. Then, I prepared my schoolbag and saw the brochure about Canterlot High lying on the floor. I looked around the bedroom to make sure that no one was around and quickly took the brochure to put it inside my schoolbag. After that, I went to the dining room, where I saw my sister eating pancakes with maple syrup. I sat next to her with my elbows on the table.
- Good morning, Sunset! I said with an overly exaggerated cheerful voice. Are you feeling okay this morning? I asked, while thinking of her texting to her friends last night.
She took a bite from her pancake, chewed it and swallowed it, then she replied to me: "I'm feeling good as ever! I'm especially excited to meet the students from CHS!". Then she asked me hesitantly: "You...know who I'm talking about, right?"
I quietly whispered some incomprehensible words while looking at the floor. Sunset raised one eyebrow and asked me if I was okay.
"Of course I'm okay! I just didn't sleep that well last night so now I'm just...uh...sleepy.", I answered with a sheepish smile, even if I knew that I sort of lied to her.
My answer to her was true and false at the same time. True, because I fell asleep around 11 o'clock in the night and I woke up at 6:45 a.m., but it was also false, because I was sort of angry at Sunset, to be honest. Normally, if she discovered something new or if she just met a new person, she would've immediately told me. But she didn't this time. Sisters are supposed to tell each other everything! So, that's why I hesitantly answered her question last night.
Luckily, she believed me. I didn't want her to be upset again. The only problem with that was that I had to be upset. Darn it.
Aunt Starla came inside the dining room with a plate for me. It had three pancakes, each of them over one another. There was lots of maple syrup, just how I liked it.
After I finished eating my yummy breakfast (which didn't make me feel that sleepy anymore) - followed by strawberries and a glass of chocolate milk - I wore my winter clothes and took my schoolbag with me. I stood in front of the door, waiting for my aunt to get ready so that we could ride in her car to go to school.
Once everyone was ready, I went outside with my aunt and my sister and we went inside our car. Before I got inside the car to sit in the back seat, I felt a warm touch on my shoulder. I turned around, only to see Sunset behind me.
- You can sit in the front seat for today. I don't want to see you with that Grinch-like face, and especially not on our first day at Canterlot High, she said with a friendly smile.
- Um, uh, thanks, sis, I stuttered.
I really wanted to tell her why I was acting strangely earlier, but I didn't want to cause any...problems. But it was too late. This proved that I'm not good at keeping secrets. It also meant that I had to find a way to literally zip my big dumb mouth. In fact, I even found a zipper on E-Bay...perhaps I could buy it?
- By the way, Sunset, I'm sorry for acting weird earlier. It's because you didn't tell me before about your new friends, so I felt, like, freaking pissed off about it and-
- It's okay. I knew. And I'm sorry too for not telling you, she interrupted. Then, for some reason, she winked at me. Looks like things are back to normal, I guess.
Wait, how did she know?
(...) I guess those were just some sister senses. Maybe some supernatural powers, but who'd know?
After a few minutes spent inside the car, while going to school, my aunt suddenly asked me about a thing that I've never thought of.
- Say, Sunlight, I know it's a bit too early to ask, but do you think that there might be anyone you might...like at CHS?
I narrowed my eyes, not understanding what she meant. My aunt stayed quiet, then she asked again with a mischievous smile.
" Just...how would your dream boy be, hmm?"
"Aunt Starla! Why would you ask her and not me? Do I look that bad?!", Sunset exclaimed.
"No, Sunset, you look beautiful.", I answered sincerely.
"Thanks, Sunny, but-", my sister turned around towards my aunt and shouted to her: "What's so bad about me?!"
My aunt sighed and replied to my "raging demoniac sister". But it turned out that she didn't know what to say: "Sunset, I didn't ask you because...um, actually, you're just...you look-"
"Beautiful the way you are.", I added to make my sister feel better and I earned a reassuring smile from her. I thought that my aunt would stop asking these random and weird love questions, but I was wrong.
"So, sweetheart, how would your dream boy be like?"
I stayed quiet for a while, while thinking of a credible answer. Truth be told, I didn't want a date. Not only because I was the hate target in the past (which made it unlikely for me to hook up with someone), but I wasn't the type of person who was into romance. Actually, I honestly liked things related with action, comedy or sitcoms, so I couldn't see how the heck I'd be able to "smooch a guy just like that". Finally, I answered my aunt's question, but it just made things worse.
- I...um, don't really want a date, aunt Starla. I mean, I'm not that much into love stuff and-
- Really? she asked with an insisting tone. Why'd you hesitate then, huh?
- I was thinking of an answer! I retorted.
- Thinking? You've got lots of things going in that mind, Sunny...
- For God's sake, would you just leave her alone? She's just fourteen! Sunset said with irritation.
- I'm not exactly fourteen yet, I pointed out, much to my older sister's annoyance.
My aunt continued to drive the car and before I knew it, I arrived at Canterlot High! As soon as the car stopped, I rushed outside to see the school. As I was running, my aunt held my arm and told me: "Just tell me about your tiny crushes and all. I was a love expert when I was your age."
My eyes were half-lid, as if I was telling my aunt: "It's not going to happen. Seriously.". Then, she let go of me and I said bye to her, when I realized that my sister left me behind. I ran to her and walked with her inside the school.
Before going in, my sister was going to push the door open, but she stopped and looked at me with her turquoise eyes.
- Aunt Starla can be pretty crazy sometimes, right? And as much as I know you, you're not the kind of person who'd want to get into "love stories", she said. She even imitated the quotation marks for "love stories" with her fingers.
- Yeah, I replied casually. But it's best to ignore her, we all know how she is.
Then, we both said in unison: "Crazy."
- Well, what are you waiting for? I asked her. I thought that you just made friends in this school, so let's go meet them!
- After you, I insist, Sunset said as she opened the school's main door for me.
- Merci beaucoup! I said with a horrible French accent, then I made my way in the school, followed by my sister.
The first thing I noticed about the school was that there were students. Well, that's for sure, but in this school, there were lots of them! The main hallway had banners and there was also a place where trophies and medals were stored. The walls were sort of beige and the floor was blue with a few spiral decorations. As for the students, I couldn't help but notice how their clothing styles and personalities were different. I saw a musical group walking and the members were dressed like...rock stars. A boy with spiked blue hair and a leather jacket that was under his white T-Shirt mostly caught my attention. The way he was playing his electric guitar really amazed me. And Wait, could it be that I'm...no. No, I do not have a crush on that guy!
There were other people who were pretty different from the musicians too: fashionistas, tech people, bookworms, emos, etc.
I walked around the school with my sister and saw some people saying hi to her as we walked. The weird part about that was that they also called her by her name, as if they knew her for a long time. Some saw her and had a frown on their face, for some reason. Either this was a coincidence or there was something weird going on. But never mind that.
After an eternity of walking, we finally arrived inside a classroom where there were six girls standing. One had light blue skin and had multicolored hair. She was holding a soccer ball. Another one was hiding her face with her pink hair and she wore a white sleeveless shirt with a green skirt. Another girl had long, curly purple hair and was dressed elegantly. There was also a girl who had blonde hair and a stetson hat covered the top of her head. Finally, there was a girl with puffy and messy hair with sky blue eyes. So, they were just standing there quietly, until the blue-skinned girl threw her ball up in the air and came close to Sunset.
- Hiya! So you're that human counterpart student who's new to Canterlot High, huh? she asked with a smile.
- We are SO happy that you're here, darling, the purple-haired girl added.
- Ah heard a lot 'bout ya...everyone has, and ah'm sure that you'll fit right in! the girl with the stetson hat continued.
- Wow, it's, um, really nice to meet you! So, uh-, Sunset stuttered.
- GAH! the purple-haired girl screamed.
Everyone in the classroom (which meant me, my sister and the group of girls we just met), stayed quiet, wondering why she screamed like that.
- Sweetheart, your jacket is so...well, actually, I'm not saying that it's bad, but, um...it does not go well on you.
- Rarity, it ain't much of a big deal! the girl with blonde hair said.
- But still, she needs to wear better clothing, Applejack! Rarity retorted.
- I...ugh, whatever, Applejack finally said.
My sister was feeling pretty awkward. To make the "awkward" moment go away, she asked hesitantly before clearing her throat: "So, I need a new jacket, right? I can...buy one myself, Rarity."
"Oh, certainly not, dear! I'll make one especially for you, alright?"
"Okay...", she answered slowly.
"So, if we go back to the main subject, guys? Sunset here is gonna join CHS!", the girl with the soccer ball exclaimed.
"And Sunlight too, you know.", the shy pink-haired girl murmured.
I smiled at her, who then turned around as she squealed (or at least, I think she did). Then, when I felt confident enough, I asked the girl group about their names and some questions about Canterlot High.
"Name's Rainbow Dash. Consider me as the coolest person here."
"Mah name's Applejack, nice to meet ya!"
"Call me Rarity, darling."
"I'm Pinkie Pie!", and she shook my hand with lots of strength.
"I'm...Fluttershy.", but her voice was almost inaudible.
I laughed and all of us, including my sister, visited the whole school before getting ready for our classes. While we were walking around, Applejack asked me about some information about myself.
- So, Ahm guessin' you're a high school junior or a sophomore, Sunlight?
- No, actually, I'm a freshman, I replied. I look too tall, right?
- Not that much, although Ah know a guy who's a tad muscular and taller than ya, she said with a wink.
- Really? Who?
- Let's just say that you'll meet him right...
A loud and hoarse voice was heard nearby, and I saw a white-skinned muscular guy running around the school screaming "YEAH!". Applejack continued: "Now.", after being briefly interrupted by him.
- You'll just like this school, Ah know it, she told me.
- Thanks, Applejack, I answered, knowing that today would be a great day, because I met such amazing people who are now my...wait, are they my friends? I'm not sure about that yet.
- We're ALL friends! And for that...PARTY AT SUGARCUBE CORNER!! Pinkie shouted excitingly.
- Wait, what's a Sugarcube Corner? I asked hesitantly.
Everyone (except Sunset and I) gasped of fear. Rainbow Dash explained to us what the place was and apparently, it seemed like a place where we could get delicious treats. What a relief, I haven't eaten cake in two years!
Unfortunately, our visit ended and I had to part ways with my sister's group so that I could go to my class. I looked at my schedule for the day and my first class was...science. I don't like subjects that are too easy for me, but maybe this school's science classes weren't really too boring. I went to my locker (which my "friends" showed to me) and opened it to take my material for class. Everything was okay and cool, until...
This boy came next to me. And I'm not talking about Flash Sentry (Pinkie Pie told me about him). So, he had messy pitch black hair and his skin was practically white. He wore black jeans and a white T-Shirt, which was partly covered with his black leathery jacket. His eyes were as blue as the ocean. I knew about that when he looked at me while he was next to me, because his locker was next to mine. Did I have a crush on him? I don't know, but my heart was beating abnormally fast and my hands were starting to sweat.
I smiled at him, but he didn't exactly do the same thing.
I immediately described him as mysteriously...mysterious.
