Prologue

The cold winter night was dropping snow to the streets of Canterlot. The moon hung behind white twisted clouds mixed with the beautiful configuration of stars. It shed a eerie light onto the city, that was now fully asleep.

But one mare was awake in the late hours, walking through the streets, thinking about the days past events that will forever haunt her mind.

"I'm sorry Ms.Blaze, but the tests show your- um- infertile. Your chances of having a filly are zero to none, I'm sorry. I wish there was more we could do."

She winched as the words crossed her mind as she fought to hold back the tears.

She turned through a gate that led to a small park. Snow covered trees lined the sides of the walkway, seperated by the occasional street lamp. She came to the centre of the park where a large oak tree slept under a blanket of white snow. The moon, casting a dull grey shadow across the ground in front of her, still beamed in the sky as the city slept.

She stopped just before the shadow and sighed, not knowing what to do next, simply walked to the base of the tree and sat herself down. She closed her eyes and embraced the cold atmosphere surrounding her. Trying to clear her mind of all thought like she intended.

Her eyes opened, and they traveled to the giant castle that sat just over the trees. It glowed in the night, illuminated by thousands of torches evenly spaced around the exterior of the castle, to show a little eveness to the uneven architecture.

Her mind was now flooded with thoughts on her future. What would she do? But by now the mares options were gone, she would never have a son or daughter to call her own.

She placed her face in her hooves and started to cry. Short dry sobs cut through the quiet night, her tears now streaming down her face and onto her white coat making it a light grey color.

A sudden gust of cold wind chilled her and she tightened the grip around herself as it picked up. She looked up from her hooves to see a dark black cloud of smoke churning in front of her. Startled, she jumped back and pinned herself as close to the tree as possible, the smoke only a few feet in front of her.

Her short ragged breath was the only sound she could hear. But a dark, deep chuckle pierced the silence. The laughter lasted only a few seconds before finally stopping, covering her in silence once again.

"What seems to be the problem my dear?" a dark voice bellowed from inside the smoke,

"Um-um- I was- *gulp* I was tested infertile today. " Ms.Blaze said, clearly afraid,

"Well, Ms.Blaze, you seem to be in luck," the dark voice stated,

"I have recently found myself in a predicament that is seemingly oppisite to yours." The voice seemed to drift as if the pony saying it was pacing back and fourth.

"Where are my manners, I am King Sombra." Ms.Blaze gasped at the remark. Could this really be the pony that almost took over the Crystal Empire?

"As you may know already, I am a "evil" king. People cower before my name and do as I please, and at the moment, you are in the perfect position to help me." she could not see it but the King was smiling his evil smile behind that curtin of black smoke.

"I feel as if my time in this world is coming to an end. And I need someone to carry on my legacy."

"You expect me, to carry on your evil ways?" Ms.Blaze asked,

"No,no, no my dear. Nothing like that, meerly, take care of my future." confused, the mare replied,

"I'm not following you."

"Well, I'll put it to terms for you. My magic has gotten so powerful that I am able to create a son for myself without the use of a mare," He paused for the quote to sink in.

"I am unable to take care of the small colt due to my, occupation." he said, with a little slur,

"Thats where you come in. All you need to do is raise the little colt as if he was your own." He appeared to be wrapping up, but the mare had several questions.

"How will this keep your name alive?" asked the mare,

"Well in a couple of years I will return to see how my little champ is doing, and if he agrees, he will be eire to the throne. A prince! A prince of darkness!" as he yelled the final words the cloud started moving faster.

"So, is it a yes or a no? I'm not one for waiting."

The mare thought out the pros and cons of the situation. What would he do to her if she said no? What would happen if she said yes? As the questions filed themselves in her mind she made her choice.

"I will take the colt." she said with a little hesitation,

"Very well, name him whatever you like, but there is one surprize I'll let you find for yourself." he laughed as the cloud dissapated into the air around her.

When the smoke finally cleared all that was left was a old cardboard box that sat in the snow where the smoke had once been.  She looked at it, puzzled on what she should do next. She carefully approached the box till she was right over it. She stood there in silence but then a little voice cut through it.

"Mama?" the voice had come from the box. She carefully opened the flaps to the box revealing what was inside. Inside the box was a tiny white colt, with huge blue eyes and purple hair. But the one thing she immediately saw was one pair of wings and horn, all on the same little body.

"A alicorn?"
