The Unexpected Part 1

It was a beautiful Spring day in Canterlot, and all the nobles, the Elements of Harmony and Twilight’s parents were all gathered in the Canterlot Royal Gardens. Princesses Celestia and Luna stood on a large wooden stage in front of the seats where  all the guests had gathered. The stage was decorated with bright blue and purple flowers. A podium stood at the front, and a large red curtain hung at the back, hiding whatever was behind it.

On the other side of the curtain, a few anxious handmaidens were busily preparing the pony-of-honor for her big day. “We are almost done with your make-up Twilight. Just a little bit more eye liner and you will be ready for your coronation” Rarity said just as they finished with Twilight’s make-up.

“Thank you for helping me get ready for this day ladies, it really means a lot.” Twilight said after they finished. Twilight moved to her position behind the curtain as Celestia prepared to start Twilight's coronation as the newest princess of Equestria and co-ruler of the night.

****4 YEARS EARLIER****

Twilight was practicing a new spell that allows her to change into any creature she can think of. This spell would be able to go into other border lining countries to get valuable information about threats or future peace and trade documents without being detected as a pony.

The downside to the spell is that it uses a lot of magic to cast. If the spell is done incorrectly or something misfires, the results cannot be undone. If it is done correctly, the caster can hold the spell without any use of magic after it is cast.

The reason Twilight was practicing the spell was to help the Equestrian Army to get the information they needed from the countries that pose a great threat to Equestria.

“I hope Shining Armor knew what he was doing when he asked me to find a spell that will help the safety of Equestria.” Twilight said to herself, doing her best to concentrate. “This spell may have been easy to find, but looking at what it says in the book, this is a spell made to be used by unicorns of a greater level than I am.”

She was right, the spell was originally created by Starswirl the Bearded shortly before he died. Even Princess Celestia gets weak after using the spell.

‘So many things could go wrong if I mess up this spell...’ she thought to herself as she started charging up her horn to start the spell. ‘...I could turn into a gryphon or a minotaur and not be able to turn back.’

Just as she was casting the spell, Rainbow Dash burst into the library through an open window. As she burst through the window, Twilight was casting the spell and got thrown across the room into a wall.

She hit the wall with such force, she was out cold for five minutes.

As she was waking up, she saw a rainbow mane and two magenta eyes staring at her with worry showing in them. “Twilight... Twilight, are you okay. I didn't mean to make you mess...” she said before she trailed off staring at Twilight as she was getting up. “...up your magic. Um, Twilight, when did you get to be the same height as Princess Luna? And how long have you had wings?”

Twilight stared at Rainbow incredulously, “What are you talking about?” she asked. “I have always been about the same height as you, and I am a unicorn and have never had wings.” she said matter-of-factly.

Rainbow just gave her a look that said ‘Really, you’re that naive to notice you’re staring at the top of my head.’  “Just look behind you and tell there are no wings. Then turn back and face me and tell me how much of my head you see.”

“Fine, I’ll look behind me and prove to you...that...there...are...no...wings.” she said as she looked behind her to find two rather large lavender wings.

“I told you you had wings. Now do my other request.” Rainbow said.

Twilight looked at her with an incredulous glare. “I see your rainbow mane and tail, your eyes, and the top of your back.” Twilight said not getting what Rainbow was saying.

“You mean to tell me that you can’t notice you’re not looking at me eye-to-eye anymore.” Rainbow said with annoyance in her voice.

“Now that you mention, I can see that now. But if I now have wings, and am taller doesn't that mean my horn is longer too.” Twilight said with slight panic in her voice.

Rainbow thought about that for a moment, which is something she doesn't normally do, she looked at a picture of their group of friends then back at Twilight. “It actually is slightly longer than it was before.”

Twilight started to panic as she was trying to think of any other explanation rather than the obvious. Sadly she couldn't think of another explanation and tried her best to relax which wasn't working.

“Rainbow, do you know what this means?” Twilight asked her friend.

“What does this mean Twi’?” Rainbow asked, with a puzzled expression on her face.

Twilight sighed knowing that would be the answer. “It means, I am now an alicorn Rainbow. It also means that I will have to let Princess Celestia and Luna know what just happened.”

“What about Spike and the rest of our friends? How are you going to let them know what’s going on?” Rainbow asked, starting to sound a little worried.

“I don’t know. All I know is that I want you to gather our friends here at around 5 today, and I will send a letter to the princess’s and let them know it is an emergency.” Twilight ordered.

Rainbow gave a salute and left immediately.

‘I sure hope Princess Celestia and Luna won’t be mad at me.’ Twilight thought to herself as she went to get Spike to send the letter.

“Spike… Spike where are you? I need you to send a letter to the princess, it’s an emergency.” She screamed to all of the library.

“I’m in the kitchen, what is i…whoa. What happened to you?” Spike asked as he came out of the kitchen.

“I’ll explain when all of my friends and the princess’s are here. Now please take a letter and then send to the princess.” Twilight said in the most soothing voice she could muster at the time.
