Light.
A blinding white light fiercely struck her eyes as she opened them, breaking out of her thousand year slumber. As expected, a yawn was elicited as she sat up and excavated herself out of the dirt. Her slit eyes look tired, despite the lengthy sleep she had and her face a complete mess. It composed of mud and leaves, and various insects nested on her. The creature did not seem fazed by this, and simply shook her face; magic rippled through her which erased the dirtiness on her, and replaced it with cleanliness. It then spread both of it's wings which oddly did not seem to match, and shot into the sky, wanting to take a look at it's surroundings.
The creature could be seen looking at said surrounding's quite oddly, an expression of confusion written on it's face. It's face calmed considerably when it seemingly reached a conclusion and started to slowly descend to the ground.
"What in Tartar-" The voice it uttered, though feminine, was rather harsh and coarse. Quickly muttering under her breath, she snapped her talons and a glass of water appeared floating in midair, and the creature caught it and casually drank it.
She sighed, 'That's better...' The creature thought before resuming her speech, "Now, what in Tartarus has happened to the old draconequi colony?" She asked particularly no-one, tilting her head. She figured that they had all moved, which was quite odd seeing as that Equestria was their most frequent playground.
The creature was a draconequus, a being composed of many different animal parts such as lion, eagle, dragon and the like. Their bodies were long and slender, often containing any variation of brown fur, and everything else including their limbs, ears and wings were, as said before, made of different parts. Their hair were usually snow white, and their other hair: their manes, were usually black and ran down their necks.
Compared to other draconequi, she was a tad bit shorter than most. Also, Her hair was asymmetrical, her tail was lighter than the usual cardinal red, and the hair at the end of it was a light pink rather than white.
She shrugged, "Strange..." Though, to be honest, the very essence of being a draconequus was to be strange, and they normally weren't bound to rules, even ones they set themselves. She sat down to lay on the muddy grass which purified just before her back touched it, and sighed. She closed her eyes, 'Now, what do I remember?' she thought to herself, 'My name is Siren... I'm a draconequus... I have magic...' Siren could only blink as she struggled to think beyond that, and could only scratch the side of her head with a blush. 'And that's it.'
She blinked, surprised at how devoid of memory she was.
Siren sat up, "Well, it's not like it matters. I'll just locate the new colony and it'll all come back to me." Though suddenly, the light of Celestia's sun was blocked by what seemed to be a hooded figure, and from her eyes, it looked like a pony. She hissed, "Pony..." Siren could see the figure smile as it discarded it's cloak,
"Not quite right," It said in an oddly melodic voice, "Though I assure you, I do not bite." Siren's facial features calmed when she saw it was only a zebra, though she was quite curious as to why she was here.
"Oh yeah? Who are you?" She asked demandingly. Though despite the zebra being just as confused as she was, she chuckled,
"I am Zecora, an inhabitant of the Everfree." Zecora introduced herself simply, before her friendly face was replaced by that of concern, "I'm quite curious as to why you're here, care to privy?"
The draconequus sighed, seemingly ignoring her question, "What year is it?" And Zecora frowned, but decided to answer her question regardless.
The zebra blinked, "The year two-thousand-and-sixteen; everyone knows this, where have you been?" Siren had to chuckle at that. She had taken a thousand-year nap inside dirt, and she was also quite surprised that no-one had dug her out yet, not even other draconequi.
"Well, sleeping actually. For a thousand years right under this spot," Siren says as she taps a patch of muddy grass right next to her. Her face turned serious though when she stood up to ask her another question, one of considerable importance. Zecora had to step back a little bit as she witnessed the full height of Siren, and even more so at the expression on her face, "So, I suppose the war between draconequi and alicorn is over, hm?"
Zecora nodded her head. It was obvious that Siren was not up to date on this era, "Fortunately, yes. I heard that war was quite a mess." She addressed as she recalled some of the history books she had cooped up in her hut, "Thousands of years ago, did that war end, though only recently did relations amend."
Siren could only look at the zebra quizzically, "You mean... We're actually friendly with the ponies?" Zecora nodded with a smile. Siren was confused; ponies could not live with the chaotic draconequi due to their conflicting agenda, and it was also impossible due to the king, who was the spirit of chaos and disharmony and favored chaos over order. It would also be quite complicated integrating draconequi into normal lifestyles when that was the very thing they opposed.
"Precisely," She stated, "Though rather than 'they', I would say, 'he'." Zecora corrected, though Siren did not get what she meant by that. She tilted her head and motioned her paw to ask her to elaborate, and the zebra's face looked a bit more uncomfortable, like there was some sort of grave truth to all this.
"Discord is the only draconequus around, and all the others, I'm afraid, are nowhere to be found."
"Nowhere... to be found?" She parroted. Zecora expected her to to get upset, or even worse, start to sob, but surprisingly her demeanor was calm. She suddenly sighed, "Figures. The king was always so stupid..." She said, but Zecora pressed on.
"But what of your family? Or to them, you also give your apathy?" Zecora frowned, and much to her surprise, Siren waved her hand dismissively, seemingly uncaring.
"There's no concept of family in our culture. When we learn the basics of our chaos magic at a tender age, we have to fend for ourselves." Siren explained. Zecora frowned even more; in a world of harmony and friendship, not having a family seemed foreign to them. Even the harshest creatures, the dragons, had family.
"That seems horrible." Zecora reckoned, but Siren shook her head.
"It was manageable. T'wasn't that bad as others may think it to be, especially since all bodily needs are taken care of with my magic." The draconequus affirmed as a white sparkle twirled around her clawed fingertips before it disappeared in a snap.
Zecora could only stare at Siren, baffled. Nevertheless, she started to walk forwards, "C-Come, we shall go to my homestead. You must be hungry, so let's make sure you are fed." Siren tilted her head in confusion; if she knew of draconequi, surely she would know of their reality-warping abilities, essentially making her able to make her own food out of thin air. Though, she wondered how food of a newer era was like. So, she shrugged and nodded,
"Sure, why not? I suppose I can't spread chaos on an e-" She coughed, hoping she didn't hear, "I mean, you know... Let's just go." Zecora turned her head around and blinked, then turned it back around.
Princess Celestia sat in her study room, deep in thought. This was where she spent her time when she wasn't listening to snobby nobles at the Solar Court, or simply sitting on her throne. It was quite obvious that she was rather distressed, and often times where Luna, who was woken up by her sister's unease, asked what's wrong, she would normally dismiss it as stress from a long day as ruler of Equestria.
But that wasn't it.
She knew something bad was up; a quiet hum turned full blast. She sighed, closing her eyes. When you have been ruling Equestria for a thousand years or two, you could sometimes tell when something ominous was up, even if the intuition was unsubstantiated. Though even if whatever it was was a threat, it certainly did not show. Nothing sinister was happening around them, or threatening aura being displayed which villains would normally show. Neither was there any dark or malevolent magic associated with the being. No, instead, the magic was rather chaotic, incomprehensible... Like someone she knew.
"How odd." Celestia put a hoof to her lips. She quickly shook her head, "No matter. I will have to send the girls to investigate; hopefully they can provide much needed answers." She said to herself as she summoned a scroll and quill, quickly writing a letter to her faithful student.
Suddenly, a loud flash noise caused Celestia to jump a little, prompting her to look behind her with a frown. Once she realized who it was, she sighed. Celestia closed her eyes briefly before opening them once more, "Discord, that was very uncouth of you. You could've knocked."
"You're right, I could've." The master of chaos himself grinned, "But last time I checked, I'm not a member of your orderly little pony kingdom now am I?" He chuckled as he continued even more, "Oh, you should feel lucky, and you know it—this method of entry is a lot tamer than how I used to go about breaking into this spotless room: that alone should earn me a little praise."
A small smile emerged on Celestia's lips, "I suppose, But at least give me warning before you come in... however you do." Discord brushed his chin with a finger,
"I'll keep that in mind, Celestia~. Though, before we get started, I might as well promise not to do something brash or any of the sort, like making your tea taste like a hot, fiery jalapeno," He stated, eliciting a brow raise from the princess. Discord crossed his arms and rolled his eyes with a smile, "I know, quite rare for me to be on my best behavior, but it's true." Celestia blushed, the memory of her yelp at her morning breakfast, and the mess of tea she made still engraved in her mind.
Discord continued, "I'm afraid there's a matter that has come up that I believe the both of us simply cannot pass up."
Celestia walked to her window that overlooked the city, "I see that you've sensed it too. And it's true that we cannot dismiss this either." She was met with unexpected silence, however, and turned only to go wide-eyed at the sight of Discord staring inside her fridge and she also noticed the little chaotic touches he applied around the room, like the flowers dancing for instance,
"Whaaat?" Discord turned his head right around without moving his body, and unsurprisingly, his neck did not snap. "I don't think I've been in here before, but this room is so dull and orderly, I just had to apply some touches. Y'know, spice some things up for you!" His eyes widened moreso than Celestia's when he looked into the contents of her fridge, "My word! Celestia, you have absolutely nothing in here! Simple foods, salads, etcetera... I mean, the only good thing here is cake, but I say that doesn't count!"
Celestia merely shook her head with a short giggle, "I have a reputation to uphold, Discord. That includes maintaining the state of my body."
The lord of chaos rolled his eyes, crossing his arms. "You'd think with the recent endeavors of a certain six, those snobby subjects of yours would cut you a little more slack. Perfect Celestia with her perfect smile, room, diet, psh! Is there anything imperfect about you?"
She smiled, obviously taking notice of his indirect flattery, "Thank you for the compliment, Discord."
He shrugged as he took out some cake, "Say, you don't mind if I eat a slice of this cake, do you?" Discord smiled , and Celestia nodded back at him.
"Go ahead."
"Terrific! I should visit your poor, lonely soul more often. We could even come to a mutual benefit: My comedic values for a piece of your delectable cake." He took a fork out and stuck it onto the cake, simply opening his stomach and plopping the whole cake in, closing it afterwards. He smiled at himself for a second or two before a lightbulb appeared atop his head, "Oh! I apologize, we've gone off-topic."
"No need to apologize, it was my fault too." Celestia replied. She concentrated her horn to feel the magic from the Everfree once more, all the while keeping an eye on the draconequus in front of her. It was then when Celestia realized a connection. One between the one she was feeling, and Discord himself. "Chaos... magic?" The princess uttered in realization. It did make sense now that she thought more about it. It explained the unusual aura surrounding the being despite the little malevolence it bore or lack thereof.
A herd of blank mannequin ponies suddenly popped into existence behind Discord and became animate, stomping their hooves on the floor and cheering which caused a slight rumble within the castle. Normally, guards would've rushed in by this point, but for this period of time there was strictly no admittance to ponies other than Celestia and Luna themselves. The master of chaos clapped his hands together, "Oh, I thought you would never figure it out, Tia~" Discord smiled as he snapped his talons, making the mannequins disappear.
Celestia only gave him a stern look and sat down back on her chair, not amused, "Remember your own rules, Discord. No fooling around; we may have a crisis on our hooves." Discord only nodded, his mouth becoming a zip which he zipped up. "This... whatever it is, wields chaos magic. Like you do, Discord. If left unchecked, it could spell trouble for everypony."
Discord blinked for a while and then started to snicker, "Rules? Oh, Celestia! I'm honestly surprised you can look at me in the eye and ask me to follow rules." He said as his eye started to extend several meters until it reached Celestia's, causing her to back up a little. "I don't follow rules, Celestia. Not Discord's," He pointed to a confused looking clone of himself next to him which poofed away the next second, "Not me," He pointed to himself, "And certainly not you, Celestia~ ...Well, I mean, you don't have the Elements in your backpocket, I can assume?" He joked as the aformentioned snicker turned into full-blown laughter. Though once he realized his companion was not laughing along, he coughed as a single sweat bead drizzled down his forehead (which was actually chocolate).
He shrugged, "What? Do you really want me to be a mushy suck-up about this? I complimented you; at least let me feel a little edgy once in a while!" He pouted, "Oh fine! I suppose you and the girls keep me on a leash sometimes, but-"
"Ahem!" Celestia harshly coughed.
Discord made himself comfortable in his cotton candy cloud chair once more, "Yes, well, I do have an interesting theory to propose, if you don't mind." The princess nodded, and Discord cleared his throat. "Many beings can wield chaos magic, but it is very, very rare. The once-in-a-millennia type rare. Surprisingly, I'm not the only one who can use chaos magic currently. Besides that other thing we're sensing right now, there are two more: Pinkie Pie—should come as no surprise, and some other pony I don't really know."
Celestia raised a brow, "Are you suggesting that Pinkie Pie or this other pony could qualify as the cause of this influx?" She suggested, but Discord shook his head.
Discord snapped up some tea for him to sip, "No, in fact, I was only ruling them out. They're chaos prowess are too weak to be compared to what's in the forest. The same goes for any other species that can potentially wield chaos magic. It's only a small amount." He motioned his hand to emphasize this.
Celestia tilted her head, "What are you getting at, Discord? I don't under-"
Once he took a sip of his tea, he found that it was too bitter and snapped up some sugarcubes and dropped them into his tea. Once he took a sip again, he smiled. "Well, I believe that it's another draconequus. Crazy, I know right?" He grinned slyly, anticipating her shocked reaction.
As expected, Celestia stood up from her chair full height in shock. As far as she knew, with the exception of Discord, the draconequi were extinct. There was also the problem of how Celestia herself was not able to detect the being in hiding, and also surprised at it's ability to
hide at all considering how powerful it was. Less powerful than she, but still something worth going over.
"Discord, you and I both know that isn't possible. The possibility of there being a survivor after what..." She paused, her facial features going glum as she looked at the chaos master sympathetically, "..happened is unlikely. We shouldn't assume without further ground."
The draconequus squirmed a little, his efforts to hide his discomfort quite obvious, "No need to lecture me, Celestia. It was only a theory. Besides, it'd be a worse case scenario if another creature somehow managed to amass this much chaos magic. Well, far more troublesome at least."
A flash of worry appeared on her eyes, but it went as quickly as it came. "I've sent the girls to investigate. I'd also strongly advise you to go with them."
He grinned, "Oh, gladly!" Discord was going to inquire about whether he should go, but he was happy that it was cleared up. He sauntered towards the door and opened it with a snap for him to leave. Though, instead of walking out, he made a portal through the door and left through that instead.
Celestia chuckled at his antics and closed the door with her magic, returning to her meditation.
Twilight happened to be walking around a chalkboard with a chalk in hoof, and her students in the makeshift classroom was a bored, nonchalant Spike and an interested Starlight Glimmer.
"-And that, is why a true friend should help a friend in need, even if it means some sort of compromise. I learnt that myself not too long ago." Twilight explained with considerable enthusiasm. She had been teaching Starlight more of the wonders of friendship, and since she mostly talked from experience, their lessons were that much more effective. It also helped that her faithful student had the willingness and enthusiasm to learn. She smiled giddily to herself, this is what she loved: sharing her knowledge and experiences with others. What better topic to share than friendship? Spike, on the other hand, was not helping.
"Twilight, why am I even here? You always do this..." Spike moans as he rests his chin on the crystalline desk, inspecting his claw. "I mean, I've been with you and the girls on adventures, I'm practically a friendship veteran myself!"
Twilight smiled at him nonetheless, "I know Spike, but it doesn't hurt to be reminded about it! These lessons help me remember my experiences just as much as it helps Starlight learn." She then walked to him and pulled his chin up, "Now, no more ruining the mood, okay Spike?" She asked gently, and Spike tiredly mumbled yes nonchalantly.
Starlight decided to pipe in, "Thank you again, Twilight. These lessons are helpful as always! I'll make you proud." She beamed, and that made Twilight warm and fuzzy all inside. This kind of reminded her of her days with Celestia as a filly. She sighed to herself; Twilight never imagined herself to be a princess, let alone having a faithful student. The lavender mare imagined she'd be a teacher at Celestia's school or hopefully the librarian of the Canterlot archives. But just because she couldn't be either of those things anymore, it certainly did not mean she had any regrets, not one.
"I'm sure you will, Starlight. Though, as you already know, you have to go experience friendship also. Knowledge of it won't cut it; I've learnt that too." Twilight also explained before placing a hoof on her chin, "Speaking of friends, how is everything going with Trixie?"
Starlight beamed brightly, "Oh! It's been great! It's nice to have someone to relate to, even if her wrongdoings were on a smaller scale than mines." The unicorn nervously chuckled, blushing too. Spike shrugged, managing to smile,
"Eh, I'd say you shouldn't worry about that aspect of what you've got in common with Trixie. Doesn't really do you any good, Starlight." Spike advised, and she nodded. Spike suddenly realized something and turned to Twilight, "Hey Twilight? I'm gonna be having a hangout with the guys this weekend. Mind if I go?" The drake queried, and Twilight tilted her head at him.
"Guys? Who?" She replied, wanting to know who Spike was hanging out with. He is a baby dragon after all; his safety mattered to her.
Spike shrugged, "Y'know, Big Mac and uh, Discord... People you know, so... It's alright, right?" He inquired once more, and Twilight thought this over for a bit before eventually allowing him.
"Alright Spi-"
Before she could finish her sentence, a vertical line appeared out of nowhere. Everyone scrunched her face up in confusion until a eagle talons and lion paws emerged out of said line to pry it open, revealing a yellow portal. The one who stuck his head out was the obvious Discord.
"Did someone say my name?" He sung, his whole body now out of the portal and looking at the trio upside-down. He slithered down an invisible wall to the ground to meet them at ground level. "I'm touched to hear that you all make sure to keep memory of me, despite my rare appearance." The spirit of chaos dramatically placed a palm to his chest smugly. Though Twilight merely blinked at him, and Discord rolled his eyes. "Okay, you're not the first Alicorn princess to act rather surprised at my abrupt entry. I mean, come on, that wasn't even alarming by my standards! Who's next? Luna? Cadence? Psh!" He shook his head and slowly moved his talons towards Twilight's mouth, the latter doing nothing to stop him, and morphed her idle expression to a smile, "See? Now you're happy to see me, and likewise!"
Twilight shook his hand off and went on to ask him why he was here, "Discord? What brings you here?" The alicorn turned to her number-one assistant who shrugged in response, "Is it Spike? I heard your... 'hangout' wasn't until this weekend?"
"Oh, that." His expression turning pouty, "T'was supposed to be an S-Class secret, Spike. Now we just have to hope they don't revenge crash our party too," whined Discord, and Spike gave him a nervous smile. Discord waved it off however, "No, I assure you it's not that, Twilight. I'd imagine you're going to have to bring along your lovable companions for this one. I don't have much info, but me and dear Celestia have sensed a large abundance of chaos magic in the Everfree, so we better get a move on before ponies suspect that I'm the source of all the chaotic happenings and chocolate rainclouds... I seriously need to get an alibi for that type of thing..." He prompted, muttering the last part quietly.
Twilight walked a bit around the crystalline room, a hoof to her lips, "Chaotic magic? A large abundance?" She thought aloud, "The only entity with a huge amount of chaos magic is Discord... Could it be?"
Discord immediately knew what she was thinking and shook his head no, "I'm the last draconequus around, I'd doubt there'd be another. Well, kind of." He then groaned, "Well then, hurry along. I'm anxious enough that I could just snap myself there and leave you here."
Twilight nodded and followed Discord out, stopping at the door-frame, "Starlight, can you take care of the castle while I'm gone?"
The heliotrope-colored pony nodded, "Will do, Twilight!"
Twilight smiled at her as Spike hopped onto her back, and she galloped off.
