Chapters Audio log #1- Hi there. My name is Leonard Church. I am a young scientist, and the son of Dr. Cobalt Church. He is a very rich scientist who's scientific field is based around Artificial Intelligence- AI. But with this scientific field comes a bad reputation. Some people think that he tortures other peoples' minds in order to create the AI. That would be incorrect. Instead, he tortures my mind. He wants to make an AI based off of my mind. The reason? Because my young mind is apparently more evolved than other’s. After all, I was taught by the best. But what does this have to do with me? Well, two things actually. One, he recently made an official AI, and decided to implant it in me. Now any normal kid would have declined, but I’m not really a normal kid to begin with. However something did concern me…
I recently transferred into a new school, thus meaning into a new city too. And tomorrow marks the first day of school for me… and with the AI planted in my head, things might get ugly. In class, I think that having two voices in my head may be a little distracting. See, when I was younger, my father would homeschool me, and harvest the knowledge that I had gained so he could create a smart AI. This leads me to my second point- My reputation. If people know who my father is, that could permanently taint my reputation in this school. Wait, what? Uh-huh... Okay, Alpha. Whatever you say. Wrapping this up, I am starting the middle of my Junior year in high school. I hope that I can survive without being noticed. At least, too noticed. This is Leonard Church signing off.
"Well, this is it. Canterlot High." Church said plainly, looking a the tall, empty building. Nobody was around to stare at this magnificent sight with him. Well, except for himself.
'It's a lot bigger in person.' A voice in his head spoke. Church sighed and shook his head.
"Way to point out the obvious, fucking retard." He said with an attitude. Nobody was around, so he could speak to himself without looking like a retard himself. He stood for a few more seconds before the voice in his head spoke again.
'Why don't we go in?' It said, as a little white hologram came out of nowhere. Church shrugged his shoulders.
"You're in charge, Alpha." He said, as he strutted towards the glass doors. When he stepped into the school, it looked a lot bigger on the inside than it did outside. At least to him it did. There was a high ceiling, a chandelier, a trophy case, lockers... Nothing out of the ordinary. It was a pretty tidy school.
"Looks boring. We should explore a little." Spoke Church, his voice echoing in the large room.
"Okay, let me be the voice of reason here." Began the white hologram. It spoke out loud this time, as it was in it's physical form. "We could get in trouble from going into restricted areas. This school could be super tight with it's rules- we may not even be allowed in here now!" He looked around, knowing that the Alpha was exaggerating.
"Override exception, let's look around a little bit." Church said smiling at the closest door. It was across the hall, and a very dim light was flickering on and off. Alpha sighed.
"It wasn't an exception. It was a fucking warning." He said, also staring at the door.
"Well, let's go." Church said, as he began walking towards the door. As he neared the door, his hand began to tremble and his stomach dropped. Soon enough, he was in front of the door, and he began to hear voices from inside.
"Ugh, sister, you need a tighter grip!" The first voice spoke.
"I'm trying me hardest, Tia! I'm gonna... I'm about to...!" The Alpha immediately came out in his holographic form, and simultaneously he and Church yelled the same words.
"The fuck?!"
'The fuck?!'
Without thinking, Church busted into the door as the Alpha went back into Church's head. When he got in there, he saw two grown woman sitting on the ground, and a fallen ladder.
"You do not know how to hold a ladder correctly, Luna! You need to get a tighter grip!" The rainbow-haired lady yelled at the Bluish Purplish lady.
"Well... At least I was trying! You took your sweet time up there with that light bulb! You knew that I couldn't hold the ladder for very long!!" Church just stood there amazed by what was going on in the room.
"I'm sorry, am I interrupting something?" Church spoke out, grabbing the attention of both women.
"Oh, we're incredibly sorry! We were just changing the light, but my sister wasn't doing anything while she was up there, and-" The blue lady began as she quickly stood up, dusting herself off. She then got a look at Church.
"Oh. Pardon me, but I haven't seen you here before." The other rainbow haired white lady also stood up.
"That's because I'm sort of new here. And well... Let's not get into details." He began, thinking about the two of them and what they were really doing. "Do you happen to know where Principal Celestia is? She's supposed enroll me in the school or something." He said. The white lady walked up to him.
"Well, I believe you would be looking for me then." She said with a smile. He then looked at her, and stared at her.
"You're the principal?! But how?! You're so... Hip!!" He said in disbelief. Alpha sighed in his head.
'Great. Young Principal shatters Church's fucking reality. Stop the fucking presses.' It said. Principal Celestia laughed at Church's odd remark.
"Thank you. I do try my hardest." She said putting her hand on his shoulder. "I don't believe I've gotten your name yet."
"Oh right. I'm Leonard Church." He said, scratching the back of his head. Celestia's pupils contracted.
"Wait, Church? As in Cobalt Church?" She asked in a more serious tone. Alpha sighed in Church's head.
'Oh boy, here we fucking go.'
Author's Note
Well, that's chapter one. I just need to address a thing.
At the end of most chapters, there won't be an authors note unless I need to discuss important things like turns in the story, oooorrrrr... Anything else. So, good chat mate.
“Well, Leonard, answer the question. Is Cobalt Church your father?” Celestia asked in a stern tone. Church looked down in shame. This could ruin his reputation. It would start with the principal, and spread throughout the school. As a matter of fact, rumors were spread that a student with a bad reputation couldn’t participate in any school events, like the recently passed Winter Snow Ball Dance. It wasn’t like he cared about that kind of thing, but this could seriously damage him during these next few years.
‘Don’t worry, Church. I have a plan to improvise. It’s coming riiiiiiight about…’ Alpha said as he paused. Right after he paused, there was a knock at the door of Celestia’s office. ‘...Now.’ Alpha finished as the door opened to reveal a teenager who Church could only assume was another student at this school. He had blonde hair, large round glasses, and wore a purple shirt.
“Oh, good morning Doc. How may I assist you?” Celestia asked, diverting her attention to the student.
“I’m just wondering if my MCAT has been graded yet. Because it’s been 3 months since I’ve submitted it.” The student said, staring blankly at Celestia. Luna immediately stepped forward and responded.
“I told you, DuFresne, the Seniors haven’t even taken the MCAT yet. And you’re a Junior.” She paused to rub her temples. “I’ll submit your test in a month. That’s the best we can do.” The student sighed and a look of disappointment grew on his face.
“Oh well. I’ll wait. But remember, I’m gonna check in a month. Please do turn it in by then.” He said, as he slowly walked backwards towards the door.
“Thank you for trying to stay focused on this, DuFresne. We'll do our best.” DuFresne… Church had heard that name somewhere before, but where?
“With all due respect, please call me Doc, Principal Celestia.” The Principal smiled patiently at ‘Doc’ and sat down in her desk.
“Thank you for visiting me, Doc. I’ll get it done.” She said in an attempt to rush him out. He quietly nodded and left the room. Celestia sighed and sat back in her chair. She was obviously stressed.
“So… Who was that?” Church blatantly asked. In his head, Alpha sighed at the question.
‘You are fucking stupid, Church.’ Alpha said regretting the fact that he let Church bring attention to himself. Meanwhile, Celestia stared at the ceiling and folded her hands.
“That is Francis DuFresne. One of the smartest students we have ever had at CHS. He is aspiring to become a certified medic, and he’s very determined. He submitted his MCAT test last year, and he’s been eagerly waiting for it to be graded.” She said poetically. She looked down at her desk, and straightened up the papers that were sitting there. “His only flaw is the fact that he always has his nose in a book or he’s getting his homework assignments done 20 weeks early. And even during his free time, he never socializes. He doesn’t normally come to any dances. The only one I remember him coming to was the most recent Fall Formal and… Well, things didn’t go so well then. I just wish…” She paused, looking at a paper that was on her desk. Her eyes lightened up as she looked at the paper. “I got an idea.” She said without finishing the sentence. Luna then began to speak.
“If you’ll excuse me, I have a few papers to file.” She said as she walked to the door located in the back of the room. Church was surprised at the span of their attention.
“Oooookay then. I guess that finished talking about that guy.” He said, dismissing the entire conversation. He looked down to the watch on his arm. 7:35. His first class would start in 25 minutes. He grew even more nervous about her questions about his father. Did she know Cobalt? ‘Sorry, Church. I don’t have any backup plans this time.’ Alpha said in a sad tone. Sweat started to form on Church’s forehead. Celestia had already grabbed her phone, and was calling someone.
“Sorry, Church. This’ll only take a minute.” She said as she began to tap her foot impatiently. A moment later, she began talking.
“Sunset! How are you this morning?” Celestia asked the person in a cheery tone. All Church could hear from the phone was muffled light-hearted talking. “Already on your way? That’s good! I actually have an extra-credit assignment for you, if you’re willing to take it.” She paused again. “Well, I actually have a new student here today. His name is Leonard Church.” Most people called him just ‘Church’, but it was whatever. “Could you possibly show him around the school? I don’t actually have the time to do that today, so it’d be fantastic if you showed him to his classes.” A tour guide? Would that really be necessary? It sounded like a bunch of dead weight to him. “You will? Awesome! Thank you Sunset, this means the world to me.” Okay, he could now tell that she was being sarcastic. “Alright. See you in… 10 minutes? Thank you Sunset. Goodbye.” She put the phone down sighed loudly. Church could see that she was stressed.
“So, someone is gonna show me around the school?” Celestia nodded slowly, obviously not wanting to focus on that. She looked dead ahead at Church, and remembered what they were originally talking about.
“Now, about your father…” As soon as she said that, Church’s body shook.
‘Oh great fucking God. Kill me now.’ Alpha remarked, Church also wanting to die. Celestia stood up, and walked towards one of the many tall file cabinets. She picked up a picture that was resting there.
“Did you know that your father used to be my High-School sweetheart?” Suddenly, Church stopped shaking and his eyes widened. His father was what?! “He used to be a really smart and fun guy. He was also really fun in bed.” She said, staring at the picture and biting her lip. Church sighed as he heard this surprising revelation.
‘Great. We’ve now discovered that your dad wasn’t a fucking introvert, and we may have finally found your mom.’ Alpha blatantly said as Church looked up. This couldn’t be happening. Celestia was his mother?!
“To this day, I still thank your father for being such a great man. And for using protection.” She said, putting the picture down and falling back into her chair. As Celestia said that, Church let out a sigh of relief. “I don’t think I’ll ever meet a greater man than him. He was the best of the best.” Church shook his head and looked dead straight at Celestia.
“Principal, I hate to tell you this, but I’m afraid that we aren’t talking about the same guy. He may have been different back then, but since I was born, he turned into a psycho-killer mad scientist guy.” He had to admit, he was exaggerating a bit. His father had never killed anyone before. His dad was a quiet man, mostly keeping to himself- well, except for when he was doing his AI experiments. He also left Church home almost every night just to go do field tests or something. It wasn’t pleasing.
“I’ll admit he may be a different man now, but I believe that he’s still a good person on the inside, despite the world’s opinions of him.” She said. As she was going to continue, there was a knock at her door.
‘Ummm… I gotta log off for now, Church. See you in a minute.’ Alpha said, logging off and giving Church much less of a headache. Church was surprised at this, but it was whatever. Just as Alpha said that, Church heard the door open behind him. When he turned around, he met eyes with a red and yellow-haired girl.
“O-oh. I take it that you’re Leonard Church?” She asked with surprise in her eyes. He slowly nodded and she smiled. “Nice to meet you! My name is Sunset Shimmer.”
Audio Log #2
Hey guys, it’s Church again. I wanted to bring you an update on everything that has been going on recently. First off, I met this really neat person named Sunset Shi- Alpha, shut the fuck up. She’s nice and you know it. Sorry, but she is a really interesting person with a… unique group of friends. I also talked to a student named Doc today. I think I figured out why I recognised him earlier this morning. I’m looking through my dad’s experimentation logs and I see that he’s been experimenting on a subject named DuFresne, which just happens to be the last name of Doc. I'm pretty sure that's just a coincidence, but you can never be too sure. That’s pretty much everything notable that happened today, I’ll talk to you tomorrow. This is Leonard Church, signing off.
CHAPTER 3- Boxed In
The halls of CHS were never quiet. At least, they weren’t in the ears of Frank Dufresne. Even when the halls were bare and no students were present, it seemed that the walls were talking to him. They obviously were not, but every day he would hear whispers in his mind that were telling him about the “Mercenaries” or the “states”. It was almost as if someone were warning him about something.
“I can’t fucking believe I forgot my lunch!” A voice shouted in the hall. Dufresne looked in the direction of who was shouting, and saw Dexter Grif- a heavier-set teenager that he was all-too familiar with. He wore an orange tank-top and had a fully grown-out chinstrap beard.
“Look, would you stop complaining if I gave you my lunch?? God, you are such a fatass!” Said his companion, Simmons, who was taller and skinnier than the heavy teenager. He had bangs of brown hair, a ponytail, and was cleanly shaven. Dufresne walked up to the bickering duo.
“So, how’s the number one couple in CHS?” He said sarcastically. The duo looked up to him and immediately stopped arguing.
“Fuck off, Doc! I’m having an existential crisis!” Grif said while making both of his hands into fists. “I forgot my Masala at home and I’m going to die without it! I rely on indian food to live!” He said, his eyes watery. Simmons sighed, looking to Doc while pinching the bridge of his nose.
“I am trying to get him to stop complaining by just giving him my food, but he won’t take it because it isn’t indian food.” He said with disappointment in his voice. Grif turned around and pointed at Simmons with anger in his eyes.
“It’s Masala Monday and you know it!! I'm gonna starve if we don't do something!!” He sighed and folded his arms. “I'm thinking of calling mom to bring me my lunch, but she's probably busy with Kakaina or something. Why did that little bitch have to be born last week?” He said in reference to his little sister. Doc looked to Simmons and sighed.
“Since when was Grif into Indian food?” Doc asked suddenly. Simmons looked to Grif and back to Doc.
“You know what? I don't even know.” Simmons said.
Church and Sunset stood outside of Celestia’s room, both waiting for the principal to do some scheduling stuff. It was quiet between the two of them, and the silence was very uncomfortable. Sunset decided to start some small talk.
“So…” she began. Church looked to her to see what she wanted. She needed to keep the conversation alive. “So why are you coming to this school? Have you heard about some of the things that happened here?” Dammit! Why would she word it like that?! She sounded like she didn't want him here.
“You know, I wanted to get out of homeschool. I mean, I technically have graduated High School, but I think I need some time outside of the goddamn house.” He said nonchalantly. He knew he was lying, as he was also trying to find a certain someone in this school. Sunset nodded in understanding.
“Yeah, I know the feeling. Being cooped up is not as good as being out… in… a school.” She ended the conversation awkwardly. The duo then continued their uncomfortable silence. Suddenly, Church’s phone starting ringing.
“Sorry, I should take this.” He said, grabbing his phone and putting it to his ear. “Who is this?” He asked.
“Yo dude, this is Alpha.” The caller said, surprising Church.
“Alpha?! The fuck are you doing in my phone?! Don't tell me you deleted anything!” Church yelled as silently as possible. Yelling silently wasn't very possible however, so when he glanced back at Sunset he saw that she had a somewhat concerned look on her face.
“Look, I'm not in your fucking phone. I'm actually communicating through your mind, dumbass. But that's not what matters, just hear me out.” Alpha paused before continuing. “That girl is really bad news. She's the one who apparently turned into a demon on that one night. Look it up.” Alpha said.
“Dude, I already knew that. We aren't pals, she's just showing me around.” Church said through clenched teeth, glancing at her through his peripherals. Celestia opened the door as he gave Sunset another glance.
“Of course you knew that.” Alpha replied sarcastically. “You just need to be careful, dude. Director Colbalt would hate-” Alpha began before stopping in disgust of his creator’s name.
“Just don't fuck anything up?” Church attempted to finish.
“Yeah, you got the gist of it.” Alpha said. Then the call hung up, and Church went into Principal Celestia’s office.
Sunset stood next to Church in uncomfortable silence in the small office. However, the proximity between her and the genius wasn't what made her uncomfortable. It was the feeling she had in her gut about him. For some reason, she knew that he was talking about her with whoever ‘Alpha’ was on the phone. She thought that she could have a second chance, but it turned out that this wouldn't be the case. She wanted to say something, but she bit her lip in fear.
“Alright, I have your schedule ready.” Celestia said, with the hum of her printer filling the room’s silence. It only lasted for a few seconds, and when Church’s schedule was done printing, she grabbed a sheet of paper and wrote something on it. She then handed the schedule to Church, the school bell ringing as he took it in his hands.
“Alright, according to this schedule my first class is… Math.” He said. Sunset also had math as her first period class. Looking at his schedule, however, she saw that he had the exact same teacher as her. Looking even closer, she noticed something strange. His schedule looked to be an exact copy of hers. She looked up to Celestia, who winked at her when they met eyes.
“Alright, off to Mrs… Harshwinny’s? I think that's how you pronounce it, at least.” Church said, folding the schedule in half. He turned and reached for the handle, before temporarily stopping at the sound of Sunset’s voice.
“Wouldja look at that! I also… have… Harshwinny.” She said awkwardly. Church nodded and put his hand on the handle of the door.
“Thanks, Principal Celestia.” He said in a flat tone. He then opened the door and walked out of the room, Sunset Shimmer following.
“I really hope he's like his father.” Celestia heard the voice of her sister state as the door closed itself. The white-skinned woman looked back at her sister with a confused look on her face.
“As a student or in bed?”
