A Stranger in a Strange Land

Ummm...hello?

____________________________________________________________________________________________
The presence of judgement pressed down on Twilight Sparkle like a thick woolen blanket in the stifling examination room, made only worse by the eyes of the four older ponies who looked down on her with matching frowns. The air was filled with the smell of failure, sweat, and tears of the previous candidates for a treasured place in Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns. Fillies and colts ahead of her had vanished into this room, taken their test, and left to a different room as not to disturb the next candidates, but Twilight could tell from the still smoldering marks on the walls how badly they must have performed. The only friendly faces in the room were her own parents, standing in their appointed places with identical nervous smiles pasted on their faces. They had placed so much faith in her abilities, and now that the test to hatch a dragon egg had begun, she couldn’t even make a spark with her horn.

She was going to fail.

"Well, Miss Sparkle?" a stern looking mare said impatiently, waking up the filly from her thoughts.

Twilight trembled, feeling a sudden weakness in her knees. She smiled awkwardly at the instructors, only to flinch under their stern glare. Failing this test would mean she wouldn’t be accepted into the school, and she had no idea how to proceed. Despite her ever-present fear of failure she started to cast spell after spell, trying to heat the egg but with no avail.

Searching her mind for anything useful she read about, she cast another spell, leaving a hardly noticeable mark on the egg. Her heart started to beat faster, sweat dripping from her face as she tried to cast the advanced spells she had read about, but she was unable to produce even a spark of magic. In a final act of desperation she jumped on the egg, despite the fact that the heat of her fur was nowhere near warm enough to affect the lava-proof egg.

She sighed mournfully and said with quiet voice, “I’m sorry for wasting your time.”

Resisting the urge to cry, she shut her eyes, closing herself into her thoughts. My mom and dad... they believed in me, and I failed. I’ve disappointed them in front of all these important ponies.

She quickly glanced at the instructors. The pens in their magical auras were writing in their notebooks at alarming speeds, the combined scratching of their pens sounding so much like tiny voices whispering, "Fail. Fail. Fail." She lowered her head and stared at the floor instead, unable to look at their stern expressions anymore and too afraid to see the almost certainly disappointed looks on her parents’ faces.

The stern mare finished, setting her pen down on her notepad as she looked up at the examinee. “Well, Miss Sparkle,” she said, her voice warmer and much less harsh, “I have good n—”

BOOM
With much more important matters than finishing, or listen to her finish, her sentence, everypony in the room looked up out the window to see a huge rainbow moving towards them. Suddenly, Twilight’s horn light up and started releasing a huge amount of magic, her eyes going white with pure power. Her magic is uncontrollable, but instead of turning everyone in the room into a potted plant, it instead begins the most powerful teleport spell to date, and the caster has no control over it. A mere second after the spell started, it finished, emitting a loud “POP”. When everypony looks up, the egg has been hatched, but Twilight is gone. Her parents start looking for her in the room frantically, while the judges try to calm them down and say that with that kind of power she could be anywhere, and to go talk to Celestia about a search within Canterlot, and after that to go look in places young Twilight went to frequently, as those places where the most likely places for her to be. A desperate Mother and Father do all of these. Celestia ordered a search of all of Canterlot and The Palace, while they go and look in their home, the library, and the park where she would sometimes play with Shining Armor or Cadence, each coming up blank and them getting more and more worried and desperate. The search by The Guard also comes up blank, as well as the follow-up one in nearby town and villages such as Ponyville. But alas, none of them come to anything, and a mother and father now must care for their remaining son and grieve in private.

But what did happen to young Twilight? This is what happened to her after her Teleport. Keep in mind, I am the narrator with the advantage of knowing quite a bit more than characters. As you'll see, dear reader, having her tell it would be out of the question.

Another loud POP can be heard in the wasteland that is Prance, a country caught in the end of the known world, and the unknown world. It, as well as its neighbors Germaney, the United Kingdom -of Highland, Whales, and Breatin-, the U.P.S.R. -Union of Pony Socialist Republics-, and many other countries in a rather large land known as “Europe”. This land was on the other side of the Everfree Forest, which, contrary to what you might think, was many hundreds of miles thick and went far north and south of Equestria’s western border. You also then had a small ocean. As such, it was never known about by even the Explorer Daring Doo, much less the rest of that side of the world, but there were more than enough crazy over the top WMDs in space for any of that to matter. With a yelp and a soft thud, a small filly lands. It was still Twilight Sparkle, but not the one that world, or the one she came from, knew. Her coat was now a very dark purple*, with a red mane. The stripe going through it was now a solid teal color, and her once purple eyes were now turquoise. This Twilight still didn’t have her cutie mark.

As Twilight look up, she saw a camp in the distance. When her stomach gave a large growl, she didn’t need any more motivation to go to it. As she neared, she started hearing voices. She couldn’t make out anything they were saying, just that they were talking. She was suddenly scared that they might be bad ponies, even though there was no apparent reason; it was just one of those gut feelings. She started sneaking very slowly as she got closer and closer-

SNAP

Twilight froze as the voices suddenly stopped.

“Arrêtez! Qui est là? Montre toi!” Shouted out a voice.

Deciding trying to hide and stay silent would only make matters worse, she replied, saying, “What did you say?” She had no idea what he had just said to her, although from the tone she was pretty sure the owner of the voice was telling her to do something, she wanted to be sure she actually wanted to do the command.
Twilight could’ve sworn she heard somepony mutter “Anglophones”, but she wasn’t sure.

Either way, a different, and very heavily Germane (hey, I'm just the narrator, don’t ask me why they name their languages the way they do) accented voice, said “We said, ‘Stop! Who's there? Show yourself!’, alzough vou didn’t know it at za time. Vould vou please do so? Ve von’t hurt vou.”

“Ok…” said Twilight, relaxing, just a little, and slowly stepping into the center of camp.

There was a campfire, with 6 ponies sitting around it, 3 on one side, 3 on the other, sitting in a line on two rather charred logs, with Twilight perpendicular to them; on one side were two Earth pony Stallions, one blue with a dark blue mane, blue eyes, and a Stick of Lit dynamite with a few bricks of what looked to be C4 in the “background”, and had a somewhat depressed look about him. The other was notably younger, with a somewhat dark green coat, dark sandy mane, green eyes, an anvil and hammer cutie mark, and air of somepony who knew they had a lot to do, but would do it with a smile, no matter how small. There was an Earth pony mare-ok, everypony there (except Twilight, of course), was an earth pony-with a white coat, a solid red mane and tail, and a revolver with the cylinder removed and right in front of it, facing upward. On the other side were 2 fillies and 1 colt. One filly was also white, with a purple mane and no cutie mark. She looked to be a little younger than Twilight. The other, who was closest to Twilight, was bright pink with a straight, darker pink mane and tail with a quiet and deeply scarred look about her. The colt was a grey color, with a butter mane and tail, and yet again no cutie mark. He carried an air of happiness and optimism with him.

Twilight took all of this in. Then she trotted over to the pink filly and hugged her. All 3 of the adults lurched at her as if to stop her, then stopped and stared in amazement as the pink filly froze, then relaxed and slowly returned the hug.

“What’s your name?” Whispered Twilight. “My name is ^*^*.”

Twilight Giggled “You said that pretty funny, especially the second part, but I like it.” Then with a look of concern and dropping her voice so that even could barely hear her, she whispered “Why are you so sad?”

At this, Pinkie froze, before she started to shake and then started to cry. “M-m-y where k-k-killed by *sniff* raiders a-a-a few *sniff* a f-f-few y-y-years ago.” She choked out in a deep, at least for a foal, and thickly accented Russian voice. Twilight’s eyes widened in horror and she hugged Pinkie even tighter and let her cry in her mane. She was crying herself, why would somepony do that? What did they do to deserve that? . After several minutes, Pinkie stopped crying, Twilight still hugging her. Finally one of the adults said, the green one, said, in crisp Equestrian, but with an odd accent,

“I never did get your name lass. Mind telling me what it is? Where are you from? And why are you here?”

Twilight sat back, with a look of deep concentration of her face. “I can’t remember my name. I don’t know where I was from. All I can remember is waking up near here. I came here because I was hungry and though you probably had food. Do you?” She ended with a hopeful tone.

“I sink we could spare some food for ze little one”, said the Blue stallion in a slight French accent. “After all, none of us managed to comfort Pinkie, but this one did without trying.”

“You vmake a goud point. Alzough, I hope I’m not za only one with more zan one question for zis one”, said the White mare, in a very heavy Germane accent. “Firzt, how in za world did you manage to hug az calm down Пинки? Second, why do you have a horn on your head? And sird, how do you know only Breatish? Everypony else I know scpeaks at least two languages, usually more.”

Twilight answered with, “I just saw that she was very sad, and thought a hug might help. I have a horn because I’m a unicorn, everypony knows that.” She furrowed her brow before saying, “Have you never seen a unicorn? And I thought I was speaking Equestrian, I’ve never heard anypony speak anything else until now. And where are we? Why have you never seen a unicorn? Are they rare here? What are your names? Then she walked up to the mare and whispered in her ear “And why did those…raiders…kill her family? What did they do to deserve this? Wh-”

“Zat is enough little one,” said the mare, cutting Twilight off. “I beliefe you hafe already acquainted yourself vith Pinkie. My full name is name is Grille-pain de Reparatur Pony, but vou can just call me Toasty.”

“Name’s Hope lass, nice to meet you,” said the green stallion, who was sitting next to Toasty. “This,” he said, gesturing to the blue stallion, sitting on the other side of Toasty “is Conducteur. I think it’s odd, but I don’t have room to talk, and Toasty’s full name is even weirder. Anyway, this-” he said while pointing right across from him to the grey colt, “-is Felix. He’s just a little crossed-eyed, but he manages pretty well.” Felix gave Twilight a large smile, and waved at her. “Lastly, this is Mięta Pieprzowa, but you can just call her Peppermint,” Hope gestured at the purple-maned filly. “Now, what will we call you?”

“Maybe we could call her Amni? It would make sense,” said Conducteur. After a moment of thought, Toasty said,

“It’ll hafe to do for nov I guess, until she rememberz or we sink of a better one. So, vhat do you sink, does Amni sound ok to you?” She asked Twilight.

Mulling over it Twilight, or Amni as we shall now call her, she replied, “That’s sounds like a pretty good name.”

“Well then, that’s settled. So, Amni, what would you like to eat? We have canned apples, a stew, some sugar apple bombs, aaaand- wait, where’d the rest of our grub go? Could’ve sworn we had some cram around here…” Before he took note of Felix, with his muzzle already half buried into a cram can, before he stopped, licked his chops, and smiled sheepishly.

"Sorry”.

Amni scrunched her muzzle and said “Did you just eat meat?!” Everypony then stared at her.

“What?”

“Amni,” Hope slowly said, “I don’t know where you’re from, but here everypony eats meat. Sometimes we don’t have anything else to eat.”

“Oh…sorry.” Amni’s stomach gave an almighty growl, prompting Felix to offer the rest of the cram to her, which she took in her telekinesis. She closed one eye and looked into the can, sniffed it, then stuffed her snout in and took an experimental bit. It wasn’t anything like what she had tasted before, but it wasn’t particularly bad-it was a flavor she could get used to-, so she finished the can. Feeling pretty full, Amni licked her chops. There was a short, slightly awkward silence before Toasty spoke up and said

“Amni, would you like me to show you how to use a gun? Assuming you don't already know how, I mean.” Twilight cocked her head to the side and asked,

“What’s a gun?” She began to shift around uncomfortably as everypony there started at her incredulously.

Toasty broke the silence by saying, “Well zen, I guesz it’z time you learn then, eh? Follow me”, standing up and gesturing for Amni to follow her. She picked up a small crate with her mouth, put it on her back, then started walking in a seemingly random direction. “Well? Come on”, Toasty said over her shoulder, prompting Amni to shake her head and follow her, saying,

“Wait up!”, before sprinting to catch up.

They trotted at a somewhat brisk pace for about 5 minutes, before coming to a stop on an open field, but it was on a short hill. Toasty set down the crate and opened it, while Amni caught her breath. “Vhy are you out of breath? This waz but a short trot, and you were carrying nothing.”

“I’m sorry *pant*, I’m just not used to doing this kind of stuff very much.”

“Zen you’d better start now”, Toasty observed. At this point she had taken a pistol, a small revolver, and a small-caliber rifle out of the crate, and had set up some used cram cans about 50 feet away.

"These”, Toasty started, “are guns. They come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes, calibers, and roles, but they all have a few things in common. First, they use some kind of bullet.” While she was saying this she pulled out a bullet to show Amni. “A bullet has a small piece of metal at one end, which is shot out by powder so that if goes really fast.” Putting the bullet down, she then picked up the pistol. “The second thing they all have in common is a barrel, which the bullet goes down, and is used to aim,” taking off the barrel and showing it to a fascinated Amni, “The Third thing all guns have is a trigger, which is what fires the bullet.” Putting the barrel back on, checking the safety, and pulling the trigger to a loud *BANG*.

After a few seconds of looking around, Toasty saw Amni on the ground with her hooves over her ears, trembling.

“Oh I’m so sorry mein kind,” scooping Amni into her hooves, whispering soothing words to her and calming her down, before putting her back down. “I forgot to warn you how loud guns are. Is there anything I can do to make up for it?”

“W-w-well, you told me what guns were, but not how they worked. Could you please tell me?” Amni said. “Are you sure kleide? I’m not sure you would-” Toasty cut herself off as Amni gave her a look that would have put Applebloom to shame

“Well I guess we’ll see what I can teach you. So, what would you like to know?” “So what exactly makes the bullet move? I know you said the powder, but does the powder do?” It was only at this moment that Toasty knew what exactly she had gotten herself into.

A few hours later, a rather exhausted Toasty and energetic Amni trotted back into camp. Toasty, feeling quite drained explaining just about every aspect of a gun, from what made the bullet move, to different calibers and what they meant, to different types of guns and their general roles. She was quite surprised, and maybe just a little scared, of how easily this filly learned things. She was like a KV-she just absorbed what was thrown at her without any problem. She had done what she intended to, which was show Amni how to fire a gun, and then have her do it. The possibilities for her telekinesis, once it was strong enough, were seeming endless. However Toasty could think about that later, Amni's endless stream of questions had drained her, and she was out like a light.

Author's Note

So? Feedback on this last part I added would be nice, and yes IK the filly Twilight is the wrong color, but Amni at least looks likes an OC, so good luck getting the picture you want. And if anyone feels like editing this, feel free to PM me
*I thought I should take the time to more thoroughly explain what I meant. My dog has mostly black fur, however, if looked at the right angle, you can see that there is brown hair mixed in. Similarly, Twilight/Amni's fur is about 70% black and 30% of varying shades of dark purple, and as such is more black than purple in coloration.

^*^*Pinkie's name looks like this Пинки Пай in russian. I decided to have it be in english so readers wouldn't have to go and translate it, but if you want the text so you can get an idea of what it sounds like, just PM me.
