Persona EG: Pursuing My True Self
Tues 8/30
Previous ChapterNext ChapterTwilight suddenly found herself surrounded by fog. She didn't recognize where she was for it looked nothing like Canterlot or anywhere she had been. It was quiet though...too quiet.
So quiet that she suddenly heard footsteps ahead and as she looked ahead she barely made out a figure in the fog. “W-Who are you?” she then called out.
The figure stood silent, almost as if studying her. “You've only just awakened to your power haven't you? It was no accident...but I wonder if you have what it takes. Show me, right now.”
Twilight only just noticed she was carrying a sword, a rapier to be exact. Where did that come from? Was this person, whoever they were, suggesting to attack them? Did she even have a choice?
This person felt dangerous and she'd do anything to protect herself. Twilight suddenly moved, raising her sword, which surprisingly was rather light, and struck her target. There was no blood but the figure did recoil slightly.
“Interesting...I didn't think you'd be able to reach me in this fog...I guess you truly do have the potential. You are rather weak now, but over time that may change. We won't see each other again for awhile but when we do, I'll be looking forward to see how far you've come…”
Morning
Twilight woke up suddenly, the back of her nightgown sticking to her since she had been sweating. She looked at her clock and was disheartened to see it was five thirty. She doubted she would fall back asleep as she laid back down onto her pillow and her brain was already trying to analyze what just happened.
That was two dreams she now had. The first was...odd to say the least. But this other one was much more forbidding… This couldn't be a coincidence, something was going to happen, if it hadn't happened already.
Once her clock had hit six, she got up and popped into the shower. Maybe it was just nerves about transferring to a new school. She shouldn't feel so worried since five people already opened up to her, which for any new student on their first day was quite an accomplishment.
After getting dressed, Twilight went to make breakfast while making breakfast for Spike as well. He had no issues when it came to food, whether it was wet or dry. She then turned on the TV and watched the news while eating her cereal.
The fog was going to stick around til the mid morning so all drivers and those walking on the streets were cautioned to be careful. Spike then gave a slight whine, as if he understood what was said. Twilight smiled and petted his head. “Don't worry, I'm sure I won't have to worry about any crazy drivers this morning. I hope Shining makes time for you when he's home.” She hated to leave him at home but she had no alternative.
Once it was a quarter after seven, she grabbed her bag and said goodbye to Spike before heading out the door. As the weatherman stated, it was still pretty foggy out. Luckily the path she took to school was already memorized in her head.
She was about halfway to the school when she heard, “Howdy Twilight!” She turned around and saw Applejack running up to her. There was a younger girl with a red bow in her hair that was following her. “Phew...didn't know ya took this route to school too. Oh, guess you two never met. This is mah younger sister Apple Bloom.”
“Nice to meet ya Miss Twilight,” Apple Bloom replied as they shook hands.
“Oh, Twilight is just fine. My brother's apartment isn't far from the school so I figured I'd just walk,” Twilight said. “Do you live in town too?”
“Nope, we just got off at the bus stop.” The three of them started walking. “Sweet Apple Acres is a couple miles outta town so we gotta take the bus. There are no school buses that come up that way unfortunately.”
“That's a far distance,” Twilight commented.
Applejack shrugged. “It is what it is, but Ah don't mind the walking. So, how did ya like yer first day at CHS?”
“Honestly? A lot better than most das at Crystal Prep,” Twilight said. “I appreciate you and the other girls taking me in.”
“It's no problem. Anyone at CHS is worthy of being our friend. But just so ya know, Fluttershy can be a bit timid, but she'll warm up to ya real quick.”
“And Pinkie?”
“She's a weird one...but in a good way Ah suppose,” Apple Bloom replied.
“Pinkie's a real unknown, even now,” Applejack said with a grin. “But she loves to make people smile which Ah find admirable. Ah could go on with the others but Ah’ll let ya get to know them yerself.”
Once they got inside, the three of them went to their lockers and classrooms before the school day began.
Twilight was currently taking notes in her history class. Unlike some of the other students, she was able to stay awake throughout the entire lecture.
“I can tell you what, this King Sombra was a real piece of work,” Mr. Doodle lectured. “You want to find the word 'dictator’ in the dictionary, you'd find a picture of him.”
Suddenly one of the other teachers abruptly walked in and whispered to the older man. “What!?” he almost yelled but got a quick glare. “I...I see. Everyone, I'll be back momentarily.” Mr. Doodle then left the room.
The silence was quickly broken as the other students started talking to one another. “Did something happen?” Twilight asked.
Both Applejack and Pinkie shrugged. “No idea, but it sure don't sound good,” Applejack said. The discussions continued until-
“Oh my gosh, they found a body strung up on one of the buildings in town!” Everyone's attention turned to a girl who was on her phone.
“A murder!?”
“Here in Canterlot?”
“Who would do such a thing!?”
Their voices were soon drowned out from the sound of sirens outside, which only confirmed the terrible news. “Golly...what a terrible thing to happen,” Applejack said, taking off her hat respectfully.
Once Mr. Doodle came back, it took a bit to calm everyone down it eventually they continued with the lecture. But no one, not even Twilight now, could stay focused on the subject.
Lunchtime
Despite all the chatter in the cafeteria, it was rather quiet where Twilight and the others sat. “Well, this is truly a horrible way to start the school year,” Rarity sighed. “I'm assuming no one else heard anything?”
“I'd give Spitfire a call but she's probably too busy at the moment,” Rainbow said. “How the hell do you not see a body on top of a roof?”
“Well it was rather foggy this morning,” Fluttershy pointed out. “It'd be surprising if you saw anything this morning.
“If it's alright I'd like to change the subject if we can,” Rarity stated.
There was another moment of silence. “So uh... anyone check their mirrors at midnight last night?” Rainbow asked.
“Seriously? We're gonna talk about that?” Applejack asked.
“I did! But nothing happened unfortunately,” Pinkie said sadly.
Twilight then remembered what happened last night. She thought maybe it had just been a bad dream...but she could remember everything vividly. “Um…”
“Of course nothing happened, cause it's just some stupid urban legend or whatever!” Applejack snapped.
“Actually... something did happen with me last night,” Twilight finally said.
“...What?”
“I know it sounds crazy but...it was like my mirror went transparent and I could put my hand through it.”
Everyone stared at her and she had no doubts they thought she was talking crazy. “Uh... you're joking right?” Rainbow tried to put on a brave face but even she looked unnerved.
“I'm really not…and then I felt something grab me too.”
Fluttershy seemed to shiver at the thought. “Freaky deaky!” Pinkie said.
“Uh Twilight, Ah'm sure yer not just making this up but maybe y'all were just... hallucinating or something?” Applejack suggested.
“No!” Out of frustration she banged her fist against the table. She looked down in apology. “I dunno...maybe...but I'll prove it.”
“Right...well you have fun with that,” Rainbow said.
“I'm surprised you of all people wouldn't want to find out for yourself,” Rarity said as she filed her nails.
“Oh give me a- I made up all that stuff yesterday! It's baloney!”
“Well as a good friend Ah'm willing to check it out for myself, regardless of how silly it may seem,” Applejack stated.
“Whatever.”
“If it's okay I think I'll pass…” Fluttershy said.
“Same for me darling,” Rarity said. “I think I'm going to need a warm bath tonight just knowing there's a killer of course.”
“Uh...so what do you think Pinkie?” Twilight asked.
“What do I think?” Pinkie repeated. “Are you kidding, of course I wanna go see!”
“Fine, we'll go meet in the girl's locker room after school,” Applejack stated.
Twilight wasn't sure what prompted her eagerness to prove her point but somehow she had a bad feeling about this.
After School
Once classes were over, the three of them met in the locker room. Perhaps it was because many were shaken up, but Principal Celestia announced over the PA that all sporting events would be cancelled today, meaning the room should be clear. “Alright, let's get this over with, Apple Bloom’s waiting for me outside the school.” Applejack then looked into the closest mirror. “So how does this work, your hand just went through?”
“...Something like that?” Twilight said sheepishly.
Pinkie kept poking the mirror. “Not working for me.”
“As Ah said, you were either hallucinating or dreaming,” Applejack said.
“Maybe…” Twilight looked into the mirror; her reflection looked right back. She slowly put her hand to the mirror.
“Now Ah'm no scientist but how in the hay would that work anyway?” Applejack said, her eyes closed in thought. “Ah mean, glass don't just turn to liquid-”
“Um... Applejack?” Pinkie said.
“-and if it were liquid how does it stay on the wall? Ah mean come on now-”
“Applejack,” Pinkie said, now looking nervous.
“Ah just think it's a bunch of horseapples-”
“APPLEJACK!”
“WHAT!?” Applejack finally looked back and her eyes widened as she saw Twilight's arm through the mirror clear as day. “Sweet mother of apples…”
“So uh... believe me now?” Twilight asked. She then pulled her arm out and no harm was done.
“Ah... Ah don't know what to say…” Applejack stammered. “This is…”
“Amazing!” Pinkie shouted. “If only the other girls were here!”
“Wait,” Twilight said. “We can't just tell people about this. I mean, maybe I am the only who can…do this but if anyone else found out.”
“Yeah...Ah get yer point,” Applejack said, pulling down her hat. “Yer the new girl here and ya don't want everyone alienating ya...so what now?”
Twilight suddenly grinned, a twinkle in her eye that only came up for two reasons: either she found a challenge that would put her to the test, or an opportunity to explore something no one else has done before. “I think we should see what's on the other side.”
“Ooh! I like that idea!” Pinkie said.
“Yer serious?” Applejack asked, now looking nervous. “We don't even know what's on the other side...but Ah can tell ya want to do it anyway. Fine...but we'll do it tomorrow cause Ah can bring some supplies.”
“And snacks.” Pinkie got stares on both ends. “What? It doesn't hurt to keep our energy up.”
“Fair enough,” Twilight replied. “But for now, we can't tell anyone, not even the other girls.”
Applejack sighed. “Ah don't like secrets but... alright. Let's get going before Apple Bloom comes looking for me.”
The group of four were making their way from school when they saw a group of police cars nearby. “Looks like they cordoned off the entire block,” Applejack said.
Apple Bloom groaned. “Sis, Ah rather not see...ya know.”
“Don't worry Apple Bloom they always cover up the victim,” Pinkie said. “Of course it'd be hard to get the body down, since when it gets all stiff-”
“I think that's enough Pinkie,” Twilight interrupted. They then saw Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy by one of the cars talking to another woman.
“Listen Dash, it's nice to talk and all but we're attracting company,” the older woman said. She had yellow-orange hair and was wearing a short-sleeved collared shirt with a small blue tie and khakis.

Rainbow turned around. “Oh hey guys. I was just chatting with Spitfire to get all the juicy details. Oh right Twilight, this is Detective Spitfire, part of the CPD.”
“Sparkle right? You're Shining’s sister?” Spitfire asked.
“You know him?” Twilight asked.
“Yep. Same class, different schools unfortunately,” Spitfire grinned. “We were both passionate about winning for our schools and I admit it got heated the times we met but yeah we're good friends now.” She then glared at Rainbow. “And I was explaining to Dash here we can't just openly discuss the case or the victim. All we can say is she was found laying on the roof this morning and the witness happened to be going out for a jog.”
“Oh come on Boss, not even who she is?” Rainbow asked.
“Oh I'm sure we could discuss a little bit right?” Detective Blitz suddenly walked up, carrying a tray of drinks. He then walked up to Fluttershy. “You like chai tea?”
“Um...well yes but I didn't-”
Blitz smiled and handed her a drink. “Chai latte, compliments of your good friend and Detective.” He then gave her a wink.
“O-Oh my…” Fluttershy was now blushing.
“You gonna stop flirting with the high schoolers?” Spitfire snapped as she grabbed her coffee. “We got a long night ahead of us Rook.”
“No doubt,” Blitz said, sighing slightly. “But something's really odd here.”
“Oh yeah?” Spitfire didn't seem to care anymore if everyone else was listening in.
“Well think about it Spitfire: the victim has no wounds of any kind, no signs of a struggle. She may as well as have dropped dead.”
“Er... what about poison?” Applejack asked.
Blitz grinned. “Guess those cop shows do educate. It's possible, since we still need an autopsy. But again, how and why was she up here? Seems like a lot of wasted energy.”
“Ya got a point there,” Spitfire replied. “Still, we can't make assumptions at this point...I just hope she died peacefully. Alright, I hate to do this but you guys gotta take off now. You too Dash! Skedaddle!”
No one decided to argue as everyone went their separate ways.
Evening
To Twilight's surprise, Shining was already home. “Oh good, I feel better now that you're home.”
“Seriously, I think you're worrying too much,” Twilight replied as she was greeted by Spike. “But why are you home so early?”
“Once I heard the news, I didn't have the heart to coach practice today,” Shining said. “Cadance suggested I go home so luckily one of the assistant coaches was able to fill in for me. I hope you're hungry cause I have dinner in the oven.”
“You? Cooking?” Twilight stared at him. “Who are you and where's my brother?”
“Ouch Twily...my cooking isn't that bad...it's better than dad's at least.”
“True.” Twilight smiled and sat on the couch. “I met an old of yours today.”
“Let me guess, Spitfire?”
“Detective Spitfire,” Twilight corrected him.
“Yeah she would correct me...her name explains her character perfectly. I didn't think she'd get through the academy so quick but she was dedicated to her future job. The bad thing is she has to deal with stuff like today.”
About an hour later they were eating on the couch as the evening news was about to come on. Twilight had to give her brother some credit. Sure he got one of those frozen pizzas from the store but at least it didn't get burned. It came out quite good.
“Maybe in a few years you'll master Mac and Cheese,” Twilight commented.
“We'll see,” Shining grinned slightly. “I'll take that as ‘you did a good job bro.’”
Soon the news came on. “This is CCN - Canterlot City News at five ’oclock. We begin tonight's news with a developing story about a recent murder that took place downtown between midnight and six o’clock this morning. The victim, who has been identified as Miss Holly Oates, a reporter based in Manehattan. Miss Oates was well known for her controversial stories and even more controversial interviews with individuals such as…”
“Sounds like someone wasn't quite a fan,” Shining said.
“Seriously, who goes after reporters?” Twilight asked. “Did she really upset someone that much they had a motive to kill?”
“After discovering the body, police are still in the process of finding out the cause of death, although at the moment it seems as if there was no weapon involved. As for other information and potential witnesses, the police have chosen not to disclose anything at this time.”
“Now I definitely pity Spits,” Shining said. “I sure hope this is the career she wanted.”
After they were done eating, Twilight went off to her room with Spike while Shining stayed in the living room and watched a recap of yesterday's football game. As she was looking through her textbook, she glanced over at Spike. “Something weird happened today Spike...well actually it happened last night too. I can't really tell Shining or anyone else but I think I'm safe with you.”
Spike looked at her confused. “Oh, its hard to explain but whatever it is it isn't normal...I just want to know what's going on.” She paused for a moment and shook her head. “Well, no point dwelling on it now...more reading for me.”
Twilight continued this for the next couple of hours before switching to a certain Daring Do novel before calling it a night. She had to be ready for whatever was in store tomorrow.
Author's Note
I'm so sorry for two things:
One, that was the best Spitfire pic I could find. And two, Holly Oates?
Oy vey.
