Blue, you got this!“This will never work!” Blueblood hissed from behind the corner. “I’m not submitting myself to such potential embarrassment!” “Blue, buddy, you got this,” Flash Sentry whispered with a conspiratorial smile. “Just do as we practiced and you’ll be fine!” He tapped Blueblood on the shoulder then shoved him unceremoniously into the street. The white unicorn stumbled a few steps forward, barely regaining his footing. In front of him, a group of three young mares were giggling in front of the jewelry store, window shopping. Blueblood's face twisted with fear. He turned around, seeking a way to flee. Instead, he saw Flash waving a hoof towards him, half forcing, half encouraging, his lips shaping a clearly identifiable "Get on with it!" "Humph!" Blueblood pouted. Easy for you to say! You just go out there in your flashy uniform, flap your wings, and mares start swooning! He looked at the mares. Despite himself, he had to admit they did look rather attractive, even if they were nowhere as refined as those in Canterlot. All this just feels wrong! Mares should be wooing me, not the other way around! I'm a prince, after all! There are bound to be herds of— "Excuse me." One of the mares—a fetching pink coated blonde—turned at him. "Could you help us for a moment?" Blueblood froze. His ears perked up and his pupils became as small as pinpricks as he returned the mare's glance. She's smiling at me! His tail whooshed in panic. Why is she smiling at me? "We're having a small argument," she looked over her shoulder at her friends. "And could use a stallion to resolve it for us." Be calm, Blueblood. You can do this! Take a step forward and accept their challenge. Put your vast knowledge of literature to good use! Make good of the words of Browning and Wordsworth: compliment their eyes, their mane, their hooves, then calmly and gallantly accept their request with three-eights of a smile. "Umm, uh-huh." Blueblood nodded. Drat! "Great!" The mare almost immediately pulled him in front of the store window, where several items of jewelry were displayed. "So, tell us. Which of these would most suit an earth mare?" Okay, I was off to a rough start, but I can do it! I know more about fashion and jewelry than half of Canterlot! It'll be a breeze to point out that the sapphire horn-ring is clearly the most exquisite of the trinkets on display by far, its radiance nearly as beautiful as their eyes... "Umm, I dunno," he muttered. Somewhere behind, Blueblood heard the unmistakable sound of a facehoof. "Umm, the brooch." He pointed at the first thing that caught his attention. "Really?" The mare tilted her head. She was no longer smiling. "Uh-huh?" Sweat trickled down Blueblood's face. This is a disaster! I feel so embarrassed! I knew it was a bad idea to go to this backwater village! Last time I let Flash talk me into— "Ha! There!" The mare stomped her hoof on the ground, her eyes narrowed in a smug expression. "Told you it's the brooch!" One of her friends pouted, while the other rolled her eyes. "Thanks," she added gently, then pecked Blueblood on the cheek. The Prince tried to react, to thank her, to make a compliment, anything, yet his body didn't budge. His eyes stared forwards, refusing to blink... until a wing gave him a sharp slap on the side. "Blue, what's wrong with you?!" Flash frowned. "Those were prime dating material! The blonde one even did all the talking, and you still choked!" Well, if you hadn't shoved me out there like a common peasant, maybe things would have gone better! Blueblood raised his chin indignantly. In truth, though, he had his doubts. As much as he hated to admit, his dating—and social—skills were non-existent. He was the highlight of social events and balls, but a few minutes in private would make even the most forgiving mare leave. Flash, by contrast, had been with so many mares that he had been forced to transfer to the Crystal Empire to get a pony of female persuasion even talk to him. "Look, it's really simple," Flash began. "All you have to—" "Will you stop bringing up 'the good old days'?!" Blueblood snapped. "We’re not in school anymore. I'm not Shining Armour, and I'm definitely not you!" He added a slight snort at the end of the sentence. "I can't just go and start a random conversation. I need to think a bit. Plan things." "Blue, all you need to do is be spontaneous." Flash placed his wing on Blueblood's shoulder. "Just look at a mare and compliment the first thing that grabs your attention. You bump into somepony? Great! Tell her how you have to stop meeting this way. You're waiting in line for something? Offer to exchanges places with the cute mare behind you, as long you get to chat with her. If she has a nice mane—" "Yes, yes." Blueblood removed Flash's wing from his shoulder. "Eloquently put, yet utterly pointless. Let's just go home. I've had enough for one day." "Buddy, you've tried to talk to one mare!" Flash frowned. "Seriously, trust me! You can't go wrong! All you need to do is say a few words. The moment a mare hears your Canterlot accent, she'll become putty in your hooves. These small towns are all alike. Tell them you're from there and they think you're related to Princess Celestia." "I am related to Princess Celestia," Blueblood grumbled. "So what are you worried about?" Flash nudged Blueblood in the flank. The Prince gritted his teeth. "Now focus, take a deep breath, and give a compliment to the first mare that comes out of this jewelry shop." "This is laughable," Blueblood moved a step away. Nonetheless, he did glance at the shop door. Oh, to Tartarus with it. He's already dragged me this far. What do I have to lose? "Just one try," he said adamantly. "Absolutely." Flash nodded in faux support. "And I just give her a compliment of some sort?" "Yep, yep." "And if she ignores me, we go back to the Palace?" "Bro, I'll fly you there myself!" Well, that sounds reasonable. Blueblood looked at Flash, then back at the shop. Door. Mare. Compliment. It sounded so simple in his head. The "perfect infallible plan" as the pegasus would put it. A bit too perfect, maybe, just as Celestia's grand galas. The jewelry shop door creaked open. Let's just get this over with. Blueblood closed his eyes, then trotted forward in the most dashing trope he could muster... smack into somepony. The strong smell of lilac perfume told him it was a mare. "Oh, dear me," he carefully articulated every word, making it sound as Canterlotean as audibly possible. "We have to stop meeting like—" he froze. "Rarity?!" "Oh." Flashbacks of the catastrophe that was the gala filled his mind; flashbacks of cake—huge, messy, sloppy cake—splashing all over his pristine coat and meticulously groomed mane— "So?" Rarity glared at him. "Are you here to give me your grooming bill?" "Pardon?" Blueblood took a step back. Of all the mares in Equestria, why did I have to bump into her? What are the odds? "Are you here to mock me again?" She squinted, glaring at him as if he were a pile of undercooked thistles. Blueblood swallowed. Sweat trickled down his face in torrents as he desperately looked around in search of any means of escape. "A compliment" Flash had said, but at present neither he, nor anything remotely suitable was in sight. There was the jewelry store—too cliche and insignificant—the muddy street, a few village houses, and a rusty lamppost. Comparing Rarity to any was a certain hoof in the muzzle. "It's a pleasure to see you in this quaint little town." He coughed the words out, barely stringing them into a sentence. That didn't sound too bad. The corners of his mouth curved in a content smile. Actually, I did quite well, if I say so myself. "Why, of all the..." Rarity snorted, her face coming so close to his that her muzzle was almost touching his chin. "Wasn't what you put me through at the gala enough, that you now have to mock my home?!" "Y-y-your home?" Ears down, Blueblood started backing away. "Yes!" Rarity stomped forward, pushing him back as she did so. "My home!" She took another few steps, each with enough force to crack the ground under her. "A charming—if slightly rustic—place which was perfectly fine before you showed up!" "Umm... and you definitely make it shine." Blueblood offered an apologetic smile. "Like a star in the morning sky?" There was a sudden pause. Rarity stopped in her tracks, eyes becoming wide as teacups. "Did you just say that my beauty is fading away?" Rarity gasped, equal parts shocked and enraged. "What? No! Nothing of the sort!" Flash, if I survive this, I'm going to tear your mane off! Of all the places in Equestria, you had to pick the one in which my ex lives! "I meant—" "You know what?" The mare turned her head away, chin held high. "I don't even care. I don't expect a rude, despicably pompous excuse of an oaf to understand!" She strode past him in earnest. The action caught Blueblood by surprise, causing him to stumble to the side, trip, and splat in the middle of the road. Ever since Flash had convinced him to go on this "adventure" he had feared precisely this, and now that it had happened he felt ten times worse. His beautiful coat was utterly filthy with dirt! Celestia knows how many hours he would need to wash the grime off! "Oh, Tartarus!" he sniffled as Rarity trotted away. Crashing into the closest thing he had to an ex was among the worst things that could have happened, especially since she was fetching in a minor-bourgeois type of way. "I should have commented on the Galucci," he sighed. At least it was all over. Finally, I can get back the palace and— "What did you say?" The question reactivated Blueblood's fight or flight instinct, abruptly bringing him to his hooves again. With the flexibility of an unwilling marionette, he looked up. Rarity was several steps away, staring him intently over her shoulder. Stars! Blueblood swallowed. What did I say?! "Did you just comment I was wearing Galucci horseshoes?" Rarity halved the distance between them. "Do you even know what a Galucci is?" A skeptical glint flashed in her eye. "The second best hoofware fashion house in Equestria?" He asked. Rarity's eyes narrowed. "But first for mares!" Blueblood hurriedly added. The clarification seemed to have an effect, for the mare's expression softened. The aggression she projected melted away, making her appear, for the first time since the gala, like an actual mare. "I mean, there's no compromise regarding materials, and the designs are made exclusively to add a degree of beauty and sophistication, but the angle of elevation of the rear shoes stresses the ankle and ruins the posture." Blueblood started without thinking. "You wear them quite well, despite the constant pain they're causing you." "What?" Rarity glanced at her hind legs, then back at Blueblood. "There's no such thing!" She insisted, her ears perking up. "You're good at hiding it, but it's obvious." Blueblood let out a smug snort. "The way you twist your hind legs and extend your neck as you walk." Rarity pouted, giving him a warning glare. "Not that you have to. Your derrière and posture are perfect without you having to resort to high heels." "I'll have you know that—" the mare suddenly stopped, as if struck by lightning. The faintest of tints covered her cheeks. "Is that so? Please go on, darling?" "You've chosen a good colour combination—though I'd go for a darker shade of amethysts—but if you want to walk normally you really need to make some adjustments." Without warning, Blueblood took hold of Rarity's left hind leg and lifted it up. The mare trembled from the sudden experience, but didn't resist his efforts. "The problem is with the heel." The Prince continued in stride. His horn flashed in blue, picking up the expensive looking horseshoe from the ground. "Great for events in catwalks and the stage, but quite useless for if you have to walk for more than a few hours." A ray of light emerged from Blueblood's horn, falling right on the horseshoe. "But, but..." Rarity's face twisted in pain and horror as she watched one of her favourite accessories be warped into something different. "That was a designer horse—" "Don't worry," Blueblood smiled, his focus on the horseshoe. "I watched Cadence do this all the time." A hole formed on the sole of the horseshoe and started slowly growing. "She did that all the time, when we were growing up. You won't believe the amount of shoes she ruined when she was dating Shining. She reached three sets per week at one point before Auntie put her hoof down and forbid her to buy any more." The horseshoe had lost most of its lower half, comparable to a common piece of hoofware but still fashionably brilliant. Rarity didn't say anything, but the nervous smile on her face indicated she was still going through her options: politely understanding, or furiously enraged. "I expect it'll be noticed if you go to a ball." Blueblood levitated the horseshoe in front of his face, giving it a critical lookover. "But only if a pony is focused on it. And, from personal experience, I can guarantee that won't be the case. "Really, darling?" Rarity's blush spread to other parts of her face. "Undoubtedly." The horseshoe spun a few times as Blueblood did the final few changes he saw fit. A small edge that had to be smoothened here, a bump that had to be taken care of there. "Most would have their eyes glued to your flank and tail. Those, with a grain of sophistication and good manners, would be lost in your eyes." "Well, now..." Rarity smiled, for the first time at a genuine loss of words, it would seem. "Are you talking from personal experience as well?" "Oh, absolutely," Blueblood replied without thinking. "That's why I invited you. The dating book I used though was an utter disaster." He levitated the horseshoe on the ground and gently placed her hoof in it. "I've no idea how Cadence managed to get Shining with it. How does that feel?" There was a moment of silence. Rarity's leg moved a bit, getting used to the new sensation. Her rump and back muscles visibly relaxed, as if the weight of a mountain had been taken off them. "It feels..." Rarity began. Her muzzle changed several expressions, as if searching for the words capable of expressing her thoughts. "It feels absolutely magnificent, sweetie. Although, maybe you might let go of my leg now?" Blueblood's ears shot up. He looked down at his foreleg... which was still holding Rarity's. In this light, her fur seemed more brilliant than his by far—a gentle white, almost incandescent glow surpassing anything he had seen before. Did I just...? His glance moved up slowly, eager to confirm that his mind wasn't playing tricks on him. I'm holding Rarity's hoof... which is attached to Rarity's leg, which is attached to Rarity's rump— "Stars!" Blueblood let go, a splash of pink appearing on his own face. I'm dead! "I didn't mean anything by that!" He backed away, his mouth spewing words faster than he could articulate. "What I..." Blueblood started gesticulating. "The horseshoe! And then the pose. Galas are important, so I—" "Shh," Rarity said gently, placing the tip of her hoof on his lips. "Don't ruin the moment with such horrible sounds." She then brushed a lock of his hair behind his ear. "A casual Canterlot accent suits you astoundingly better." "A-all right," Blueblood stammered, incapable of thought. "You're quite nice when you want to be," Rarity whispered in his ear. "My prince," she added, then kissed him on the cheek. Blueblood's mind exploded. It was as if he had gone out expecting a gentle breeze, only to be snatched by a level five hurricane. "Unfortunately, I have a few errands to take care of, but would love it if you come by the boutique later today. Day for afternoon tea. I still have three more horseshoes that need fixing." The mare winked then trotted away, leaving the Prince dumbfounded. For nearly a minute, Blueblood just stood there incapable of movement, staring at the empty spot in which Rarity had stood. For some reason, he felt like he had been run over by a sky of thunderclouds. Then, a single thought popped into existence. What in Equestria just happened?! Blueblood's mind was a blank. The last few hours seemed like one of those dreams that were too good to be true. For the first time in his life, he wasn't upset that his mane was unkempt. "Err... and if you happen to pass by Canterlot—" "Oh, I'll definitely go through the palace." Rarity smiled, her eyes closing halfway. Her usually perfect mane was quite messy as well. "And as it happens, I have a boutique there, so expect me often." Blueblood muttered something of little importance, then—as all the dating guides suggested—attempted to kiss her on the cheek. The attempt failed. Instead, Rarity snatched his lips with her own, proceeding to suck half the air out of him before releasing control of his senses. I can taste petunias, Blueblood thought, almost crashing into the doorframe on his way out. A dopey smile on his face, the unicorn straightened his posture, then took a deep breath. Everything seemed so much more beautiful and full of colour, as if he had entered a whole new Equestria: the grass was greener, the air was sweeter, even— "Wow, Blue!" A hoof slammed down on Blueblood's shoulder. "Way to go! I can't believe you pulled it off!" "Uh-huh," Blueblood said, still in a state of euphoria. "Terrible start. I thought you'd blow it," Flash Sentry started explaining, dragging Blueblue off along the road. "Horrible pickup line. Like, I've seen worse wrecks in the cloud factory's rejection room." Blueblood glared at him. The effects of the euphoria were wearing off fast. "But that horseshoe comment—" Flash waved his left wing in the air. "Solid gold! Next time start with it, though." "If you want to know, I—" Blueblood suddenly stopped. His ears did almost a full rotation before locking on to Flash. "What do you mean 'next time?'" I already—" he coughed, flustered "—have a special… significant other." "Blue, pal, you can't quit at just one," the pegasus laughed. "You gotta get at least a few more. That's what waifu stealing is all about. Besides, everyone has a herd these days," he added, matter-of-fact. "You're one to talk," the prince grumbled. As if I need anything of the sort! "Not to brag, but I have the biggest herd in Equestria." Flash said, polishing his forehoof in his chest, the smuggest possible expression on face. "You're the most hated stallion in all of Equestria." Blueblood trotted forward. He was already planning how to get home. The center of Ponyville wasn't too far from Rarity's boutique. Just a quick trot to the train station, a pair of first class tickets, and they were off on their way to Canterlot. "Only by the male population!" Flash sentry corrected, catching up. "Well, mostly by the male population. Anyway—" "Anyway, nothing!" Blueblood cut him short. Wow. I never knew I could do that. Feels remarkably good, actually. "It was an... interesting experience. I managed to get back with Rarity—no thanks to you or Cadance's dating book—and I'd very much like to keep things that way!" He snorted, lifting his chin high. "Also, I’m in dreadful need of a bath." "I don't know, Blue." Flash shrugged. "Don't you want to try? Just think about it." "I have thought about it." Blueblood remained adamant. "And the answer is no. We’re going home." "And you're sure about this?" Flash said, stepping in front of Blueblood. "Like, really, a hundred-percent, pinch-of-salt-in-the-coffee sure?" "Yes!" Yuck! You have the most abysmally atrocious taste, Flash! Blueblood flinched at the thought. "And there isn't anything in Equestria that you or..." the prince's words trailed off. Straight ahead, furious as a pack of Timberwolves, a mare was moving towards them at a steady canter. She seemed enraged, she was yelling, and she was drenched from the top of her hat to her hooves. Normally such a sight would be unremarkable—rain showers were a common weekly occurrence, and often one pony or other would forget the weather schedule and end up getting soaked. In this case, however, there was one significant difference: the mare in question was a dashing blond, and a rather fetching one at that. This is ridiculous, Blueblood thought, incapable of looking away. She's just a farmer, a common earth mare, a— He swallowed. "When I get ya, Rainbow Dash," the mare shouted towards the sky as she cut between both stallions. "I'll pluck ya wings like a hen at sunset, then I'll be makin’ me a cushion an’—" "There isn't anything that’d change your mind, eh?" Flash whispered to Blueblood with a snicker. "Oh be quiet!" Blueblood clenched his jaw. "Come on, it's a perfect opportunity!" Flash 'helpfully' turned him around to get a better view of the mare. Damn it! Even her tail is seductive. "You don't have to do anything extreme." Easy for you to say. Blueblood snorted. It's not your butt that'll get hurt! "Just use what you've learned and show her you're boyfriend material." Winking, Flash nudged him in the shoulder. "Easy peasy." "Easy please my left hoof," Blueblood's grumbled. In his mind, however, he was already going through possible scenarios. Should I compliment her mane? That's a safe bet. Any mare likes having her mane complimented. But what if she thinks I'm making fun of her? "Bro." Flash pointed at the distancing mare. She was already a fair distance away. "Think too long and you're gonna lose her." Blueblood looked at the road, then at the mare. I'll need a hoofscure after this. He sighed, then galloped after her. At this point he had completely no idea what to say. According to Flash's advice, mares liked when a stallion "acted naturally". Problem was, though, could he act naturally without any of his servants around? "Excuse me!" Blueblood shouted. Despite his best attempts, the distance between him and the mare remained mostly unchanged. As much as he hated to admit it, at his rate he would never catch up to her. "Excuse me, Mademoiselle!" No response. Is she ignoring me? he wondered. Or maybe she doesn't understand French? "Ex-excuse me, Miss!" He tried again, gasping for air as he did. Stallions weren't meant to gallop! If Auntie wanted us to gallop she'd have put wings on our hooves! "Ex—" The mare in front of him suddenly stopped and turned around. There was so much anger in her glare that for a split second, Blueblood considered if he shouldn't pretend he'd mistaken her for somepony else. "Tartarus has no fury as a mare enraged" the saying went. On the other hoof, she was a blonde rural beauty. "Excuse me, Miss," the unicorn clambered up to her, trying to hide his lack of breath. "I couldn't happen to notice that you're dripping wet." "Ya don't say?" The mare narrowed her eyes. "Heh, eh, yes, well… What I meant to say is..." I knew I should have thought if something better! Should I go for the hat? Or the saddlebags? "Of course you're wet. Anypony could see you're wet, because there's water dripping from your mane." Blueblood attempted a smile. The only thing he got in return was a deathly glance. So much for the humoristic approach. Thanks, Flash! "I mean to say—" "Look, if ya want to tell me somethin’, just go ahead an’ say it!" the mare snapped. "Ah ain't got all day!" "I think your mane is beautiful and I wanted to to know if I could help in some way," he said in one breath. Damnation! Blueblood cursed internally. He was hesitating between complimenting her mane and offering help, but like an idiot had mangled the two together. "Well, that's mighty kind of ya." The mare smiled, the deathly intent in her eyes having vanished, which was soon replaced by minor annoyance. "Ah always could use more help at the farm. Right this way." What? Blueblood blinked. Work? Me? I didn't sign up for this! I'm a prince! I don't do work! "Name's Applejack, by the so." The mare grabbed his hoof then shook it... along with the rest of his body. Whatever one might say, she definitely was strong. "Eh, Blueblood," the prince said, pulling back his leg white he still could feel it. "What is this farm you mentioned, Miss? We won't have to dig up plants or anything of the sort?" "Just AJ is fine," she guffawed. Definitely not a Canterlot chuckle, and yet it somehow suited her. "And no, we ain't touching plants one bit. In truth we ain't doing any real farm work. Ah just need somepony to keep an eye out as I load a wagon of apples and make sure no critters come close." "Thank the stars," Blueblood said, relieved. "I mean, I wouldn't want to ruin any of your hard work. After all, you seem like a pony who prefers to take care of business personally." "Right you are!" Applejack trotted along, drops of water falling off her mane with every step. "There ain't a task that ah can't handle! Was supposed to get Rainbow Dash to help me, but of course she had other things in mind." "Pranking, I assume?" Blueblood suggested. It wasn't difficult since she had been shouting about it just a few minutes ago. "When I get her, I'll..." the mare growled. Well, no question where the sore spot lies. Pranks and humour were definitely no-nos when it came to this mare. From this close Blueblood could fully admire her figure. Unlike most mares he had met, Applejack's body was all muscle and not the fake type that one gets from weightlifting and gym sessions. In comparison most of the Royal guards seemed quite relaxed, almost flabby. Musing on the matter, Blueblood levitated the mare's hat off her head. Applejack stopped dead in her tracks. The unicorn didn't even notice, casting a soft-dry spell—careful not to damage the material in any way—then started levitating it back down. Only at that point did he notice that the mare was no longer beside him. "Is anything the matter?" he asked, puzzled, trotting to her location. The hat followed, floating in the air until it landed safely on Applejack's still wet mane. "That's..." Hesitation was written all over Applejack's face. "Mighty kind of ya..." "Well, I couldn't in good conscience leave a beautiful creature such as yourself in such a dreadful state," Blueblood said casually. Do I brush a lock of mane off her face? It should work. But if it's too soon, I might get a slap in the face. "Say what now?" The mare arched a brow. By the stars! She's as dull as a brick in winter! "I was giving you a compliment," he added. "You're quite beautiful, and extremely hardworking—" I assume "—and I thought it would be a shame to not at least make you look slightly more respectable while we go to the farm." Applejack jaw fell open. "Shouldn't I have?" Fear crept into the prince's voice. If he was scared what Rarity might do to him when upset, he was utterly terrified what pain Applejack could inflict. One kick alone might well land him in the royal Canterlot hospital for weeks. "No one has given me a compliment before," she whispered, eyes staring blankly forward. "Seriously?" Seriously?!? Maybe coming to Ponyville wasn't such a bad idea after all. "A mare like you, I thought there'd be dozens of stallions after your flank. I mean... just look at you." "To be honest, there was a fella' who was following me around all constant like..." Applejack snapped out of her sudden trance. "But all he be after was an understandin’ of farm life. And sure, there were a mighty number of stallions who came to me, mostly for help getting things done, and saving them some cider in advance." She frowned, scratching her chin with a hoof. "Truth be told, ain't nopony come to me friendly-like. Well, nopony other than Rainbow, but with her it's different." She laughed again. "The two of us fight just as much as we make up." "Does that mean that I'm the first?" The question made Blueblood feel unusually happy and anxious at the same time. "Sugar cube, ya’ll the first and only who's treated me ladylike since I was in Manehattan." Applejack slapped him on the side. The experience startled Blueblood slightly, but not enough to move away. Blue, you got this!“This will never work!” Blueblood hissed from behind the corner. “I’m not submitting myself to such potential embarrassment!” “Blue, buddy, you got this,” Flash Sentry whispered with a conspiratorial smile. “Just do as we practiced and you’ll be fine!” He tapped Blueblood on the shoulder then shoved him unceremoniously into the street. The white unicorn stumbled a few steps forward, barely regaining his footing. In front of him, a group of three young mares were giggling in front of the jewelry store, window shopping. Blueblood's face twisted with fear. He turned around, seeking a way to flee. Instead, he saw Flash waving a hoof towards him, half forcing, half encouraging, his lips shaping a clearly identifiable "Get on with it!" "Humph!" Blueblood pouted. Easy for you to say! You just go out there in your flashy uniform, flap your wings, and mares start swooning! He looked at the mares. Despite himself, he had to admit they did look rather attractive, even if they were nowhere as refined as those in Canterlot. All this just feels wrong! Mares should be wooing me, not the other way around! I'm a prince, after all! There are bound to be herds of— "Excuse me." One of the mares—a fetching pink coated blonde—turned at him. "Could you help us for a moment?" Blueblood froze. His ears perked up and his pupils became as small as pinpricks as he returned the mare's glance. She's smiling at me! His tail whooshed in panic. Why is she smiling at me? "We're having a small argument," she looked over her shoulder at her friends. "And could use a stallion to resolve it for us." Be calm, Blueblood. You can do this! Take a step forward and accept their challenge. Put your vast knowledge of literature to good use! Make good of the words of Browning and Wordsworth: compliment their eyes, their mane, their hooves, then calmly and gallantly accept their request with three-eights of a smile. "Umm, uh-huh." Blueblood nodded. Drat! "Great!" The mare almost immediately pulled him in front of the store window, where several items of jewelry were displayed. "So, tell us. Which of these would most suit an earth mare?" Okay, I was off to a rough start, but I can do it! I know more about fashion and jewelry than half of Canterlot! It'll be a breeze to point out that the sapphire horn-ring is clearly the most exquisite of the trinkets on display by far, its radiance nearly as beautiful as their eyes... "Umm, I dunno," he muttered. Somewhere behind, Blueblood heard the unmistakable sound of a facehoof. "Umm, the brooch." He pointed at the first thing that caught his attention. "Really?" The mare tilted her head. She was no longer smiling. "Uh-huh?" Sweat trickled down Blueblood's face. This is a disaster! I feel so embarrassed! I knew it was a bad idea to go to this backwater village! Last time I let Flash talk me into— "Ha! There!" The mare stomped her hoof on the ground, her eyes narrowed in a smug expression. "Told you it's the brooch!" One of her friends pouted, while the other rolled her eyes. "Thanks," she added gently, then pecked Blueblood on the cheek. The Prince tried to react, to thank her, to make a compliment, anything, yet his body didn't budge. His eyes stared forwards, refusing to blink... until a wing gave him a sharp slap on the side. "Blue, what's wrong with you?!" Flash frowned. "Those were prime dating material! The blonde one even did all the talking, and you still choked!" Well, if you hadn't shoved me out there like a common peasant, maybe things would have gone better! Blueblood raised his chin indignantly. In truth, though, he had his doubts. As much as he hated to admit, his dating—and social—skills were non-existent. He was the highlight of social events and balls, but a few minutes in private would make even the most forgiving mare leave. Flash, by contrast, had been with so many mares that he had been forced to transfer to the Crystal Empire to get a pony of female persuasion even talk to him. "Look, it's really simple," Flash began. "All you have to—" "Will you stop bringing up 'the good old days'?!" Blueblood snapped. "We’re not in school anymore. I'm not Shining Armour, and I'm definitely not you!" He added a slight snort at the end of the sentence. "I can't just go and start a random conversation. I need to think a bit. Plan things." "Blue, all you need to do is be spontaneous." Flash placed his wing on Blueblood's shoulder. "Just look at a mare and compliment the first thing that grabs your attention. You bump into somepony? Great! Tell her how you have to stop meeting this way. You're waiting in line for something? Offer to exchanges places with the cute mare behind you, as long you get to chat with her. If she has a nice mane—" "Yes, yes." Blueblood removed Flash's wing from his shoulder. "Eloquently put, yet utterly pointless. Let's just go home. I've had enough for one day." "Buddy, you've tried to talk to one mare!" Flash frowned. "Seriously, trust me! You can't go wrong! All you need to do is say a few words. The moment a mare hears your Canterlot accent, she'll become putty in your hooves. These small towns are all alike. Tell them you're from there and they think you're related to Princess Celestia." "I am related to Princess Celestia," Blueblood grumbled. "So what are you worried about?" Flash nudged Blueblood in the flank. The Prince gritted his teeth. "Now focus, take a deep breath, and give a compliment to the first mare that comes out of this jewelry shop." "This is laughable," Blueblood moved a step away. Nonetheless, he did glance at the shop door. Oh, to Tartarus with it. He's already dragged me this far. What do I have to lose? "Just one try," he said adamantly. "Absolutely." Flash nodded in faux support. "And I just give her a compliment of some sort?" "Yep, yep." "And if she ignores me, we go back to the Palace?" "Bro, I'll fly you there myself!" Well, that sounds reasonable. Blueblood looked at Flash, then back at the shop. Door. Mare. Compliment. It sounded so simple in his head. The "perfect infallible plan" as the pegasus would put it. Blueblood closed his eyes, then trotted forward in the most dashing trope he could muster... smack into somepony. The strong smell of lilac perfume told him it was a mare. "Oh, dear me," he carefully articulated every word, making it sound as Canterlotean as audibly possible. "We have to stop meeting like—" he froze. "Rarity?!" "Oh." 2. RarityBlueblood's mane stood on end. Flashbacks of the catastrophe that was the gala filled his mind; flashbacks of cake—huge, messy, sloppy cake—splashing all over his pristine coat and meticulously groomed mane— "So?" Rarity glared at him. "Are you here to give me your grooming bill?" "Pardon?" Blueblood took a step back. Of all the mares in Equestria, why did I have to bump into her? What are the odds? "Are you here to mock me again?" She squinted, glaring at him as if he were a pile of undercooked thistles. Blueblood swallowed. Sweat trickled down his face in torrents as he desperately looked around in search of any means of escape. "A compliment" Flash had said, but at present neither he, nor anything remotely suitable was in sight. There was the jewelry store—too cliche and insignificant—the muddy street, a few village houses, and a rusty lamppost. Comparing Rarity to any was a certain hoof in the muzzle. "It's a pleasure to see you in this quaint little town." He coughed the words out, barely stringing them into a sentence. That didn't sound too bad. The corners of his mouth curved in a content smile. Actually, I did quite well, if I say so myself. "Why, of all the..." Rarity snorted, her face coming so close to his that her muzzle was almost touching his chin. "Wasn't what you put me through at the gala enough, that you now have to mock my home?!" "Y-y-your home?" Ears down, Blueblood started backing away. "Yes!" Rarity stomped forward, pushing him back as she did so. "My home!" She took another few steps, each with enough force to crack the ground under her. "A charming—if slightly rustic—place which was perfectly fine before you showed up!" "Umm... and you definitely make it shine." Blueblood offered an apologetic smile. "Like a star in the morning sky?" There was a sudden pause. Rarity stopped in her tracks, eyes becoming wide as teacups. "Did you just say that my beauty is fading away?" Rarity gasped, equal parts shocked and enraged. "What? No! Nothing of the sort!" Flash, if I survive this, I'm going to tear your mane off! Of all the places in Equestria, you had to pick the one in which my ex lives! "I meant—" "You know what?" The mare turned her head away, chin held high. "I don't even care. I don't expect a rude, despicably pompous excuse of an oaf to understand!" She strode past him in earnest. The action caught Blueblood by surprise, causing him to stumble to the side, trip, and splat in the middle of the road. Ever since Flash had convinced him to go on this "adventure" he had feared precisely this, and now that it had happened he felt ten times worse. His beautiful coat was utterly filthy with dirt! Celestia knows how many hours he would need to wash the grime off! "Oh, Tartarus!" he sniffled as Rarity trotted away. Crashing into the closest thing he had to an ex was among the worst things that could have happened, especially since she was fetching in a minor-bourgeois type of way. "I should have commented on the Galucci," he sighed. At least it was all over. Finally, I can get back the palace and— "What did you say?" The question reactivated Blueblood's fight or flight instinct, abruptly bringing him to his hooves again. With the flexibility of an unwilling marionette, he looked up. Rarity was several steps away, staring him intently over her shoulder. Stars! Blueblood swallowed. What did I say?! "Did you just comment I was wearing Galucci horseshoes?" Rarity halved the distance between them. "Do you even know what a Galucci is?" A skeptical glint flashed in her eye. "The second best hoofware fashion house in Equestria?" He asked. Rarity's eyes narrowed. "But first for mares!" Blueblood hurriedly added. The clarification seemed to have an effect, for the mare's expression softened. The aggression she projected melted away, making her appear, for the first time since the gala, like an actual mare. "I mean, there's no compromise regarding materials, and the designs are made exclusively to add a degree of beauty and sophistication, but the angle of elevation of the rear shoes stresses the ankle and ruins the posture." Blueblood started without thinking. "You wear them quite well, despite the constant pain they're causing you." "What?" Rarity glanced at her hind legs, then back at Blueblood. "There's no such thing!" She insisted, her ears perking up. "You're good at hiding it, but it's obvious." Blueblood let out a smug snort. "The way you twist your hind legs and extend your neck as you walk." Rarity pouted, giving him a warning glare. "Not that you have to. Your derrière and posture are perfect without you having to resort to high heels." "I'll have you know that—" the mare suddenly stopped, as if struck by lightning. The faintest of tints covered her cheeks. "Is that so? Please go on, darling?" "You've chosen a good colour combination—though I'd go for a darker shade of amethysts—but if you want to walk normally you really need to make some adjustments." Without warning, Blueblood took hold of Rarity's left hind leg and lifted it up. The mare trembled from the sudden experience, but didn't resist his efforts. "The problem is with the heel." The Prince continued in stride. His horn flashed in blue, picking up the expensive looking horseshoe from the ground. "Great for events in catwalks and the stage, but quite useless for if you have to walk for more than a few hours." A ray of light emerged from Blueblood's horn, falling right on the horseshoe. "But, but..." Rarity's face twisted in pain and horror as she watched one of her favourite accessories be warped into something different. "That was a designer horse—" "Don't worry," Blueblood smiled, his focus on the horseshoe. "I watched Cadence do this all the time." A hole formed on the sole of the horseshoe and started slowly growing. "She did that all the time, when we were growing up. You won't believe the amount of shoes she ruined when she was dating Shining. She reached three sets per week at one point before Auntie put her hoof down and forbid her to buy any more." The horseshoe had lost most of its lower half, comparable to a common piece of hoofware but still fashionably brilliant. Rarity didn't say anything, but the nervous smile on her face indicated she was still going through her options: politely understanding, or furiously enraged. "I expect it'll be noticed if you go to a ball." Blueblood levitated the horseshoe in front of his face, giving it a critical lookover. "But only if a pony is focused on it. And, from personal experience, I can guarantee that won't be the case. "Really, darling?" Rarity's blush spread to other parts of her face. "Undoubtedly." The horseshoe spun a few times as Blueblood did the final few changes he saw fit. A small edge that had to be smoothened here, a bump that had to be taken care of there. "Most would have their eyes glued to your flank and tail. Those, with a grain of sophistication and good manners, would be lost in your eyes." "Well, now..." Rarity smiled, for the first time at a genuine loss of words, it would seem. "Are you talking from personal experience as well?" "Oh, absolutely," Blueblood replied without thinking. "That's why I invited you. The dating book I used though was an utter disaster." He levitated the horseshoe on the ground and gently placed her hoof in it. "I've no idea how Cadence managed to get Shining with it. How does that feel?" There was a moment of silence. Rarity's leg moved a bit, getting used to the new sensation. Her rump and back muscles visibly relaxed, as if the weight of a mountain had been taken off them. "It feels..." Rarity began. Her muzzle changed several expressions, as if searching for the words capable of expressing her thoughts. "It feels absolutely magnificent, sweetie. Although, maybe you might let go of my leg now?" Blueblood's ears shot up. He looked down at his foreleg... which was still holding Rarity's. In this light, her fur seemed more brilliant than his by far—a gentle white, almost incandescent glow surpassing anything he had seen before. Did I just...? His glance moved up slowly, eager to confirm that his mind wasn't playing tricks on him. I'm holding Rarity's hoof... which is attached to Rarity's leg, which is attached to Rarity's rump— "Stars!" Blueblood let go, a splash of pink appearing on his own face. I'm dead! "I didn't mean anything by that!" He backed away, his mouth spewing words faster than he could articulate. "What I..." Blueblood started gesticulating. "The horseshoe! And then the pose. Galas are important, so I—" "Shh," Rarity said gently, placing the tip of her hoof on his lips. "Don't ruin the moment with such horrible sounds." She then brushed a lock of his hair behind his ear. "A casual Canterlot accent suits you astoundingly better." "A-all right," Blueblood stammered, incapable of thought. "You're quite nice when you want to be," Rarity whispered in his ear. "My prince," she added, then kissed him on the cheek. Blueblood's mind exploded. It was as if he had gone out expecting a gentle breeze, only to be snatched by a level five hurricane. "Unfortunately, I have a few errands to take care of, but would love it if you come by the boutique later today. Day for afternoon tea. I still have three more horseshoes that need fixing." The mare winked then trotted away, leaving the Prince dumbfounded. For nearly a minute, Blueblood just stood there incapable of movement, staring at the empty spot in which Rarity had stood. For some reason, he felt like he had been run over by a sky of thunderclouds. Then, a single thought popped into existence. What in Equestria just happened?! 3. Applejack"Don't forget to pass by whenever you're in Ponyville, Bluey," Rarity chimed as the boutique's door swung open. "It would be most enchanting to spend more time together." "Uh, of course." Blueblood's mind was a blank. The last few hours seemed like one of those dreams that were too good to be true. For the first time in his life, he wasn't upset that his mane was unkempt. "Err... and if you happen to pass by Canterlot—" "Oh, I'll definitely go through the palace." Rarity smiled, her eyes closing halfway. Her usually perfect mane was quite messy as well. "And as it happens, I have a boutique there, so expect me often." Blueblood muttered something of little importance, then—as all the dating guides suggested—attempted to kiss her on the cheek. The attempt failed. Instead, Rarity snatched his lips with her own, proceeding to suck half the air out of him before releasing control of his senses. I can taste petunias, Blueblood thought, almost crashing into the doorframe on his way out. A dopey smile on his face, the unicorn straightened his posture, then took a deep breath. Everything seemed so much more beautiful and full of colour, as if he had entered a whole new Equestria: the grass was greener, the air was sweeter, even— "Wow, Blue!" A hoof slammed down on Blueblood's shoulder. "Way to go! I can't believe you pulled it off!" "Uh-huh," Blueblood said, still in a state of euphoria. "Terrible start. I thought you'd blow it," Flash Sentry started explaining, dragging Blueblue off along the road. "Horrible pickup line. Like, I've seen worse wrecks in the cloud factory's rejection room." Blueblood glared at him. The effects of the euphoria were wearing off fast. "But that horseshoe comment—" Flash waved his left wing in the air. "Solid gold! Next time start with it, though." "If you want to know, I—" Blueblood suddenly stopped. His ears did almost a full rotation before locking on to Flash. "What do you mean 'next time?'" I already—" he coughed, flustered "—have a special… significant other." "Blue, pal, you can't quit at just one," the pegasus laughed. "You gotta get at least a few more. That's what waifu stealing is all about. Besides, everyone has a herd these days," he added, matter-of-fact. "You're one to talk," the prince grumbled. As if I need anything of the sort! "Not to brag, but I have the biggest herd in Equestria." Flash said, polishing his forehoof in his chest, the smuggest possible expression on face. "You're the most hated stallion in all of Equestria." Blueblood trotted forward. He was already planning how to get home. The center of Ponyville wasn't too far from Rarity's boutique. Just a quick trot to the train station, a pair of first class tickets, and they were off on their way to Canterlot. "Only by the male population!" Flash sentry corrected, catching up. "Well, mostly by the male population. Anyway—" "Anyway, nothing!" Blueblood cut him short. Wow. I never knew I could do that. Feels remarkably good, actually. "It was an... interesting experience. I managed to get back with Rarity—no thanks to you or Cadance's dating book—and I'd very much like to keep things that way!" He snorted, lifting his chin high. "Also, I’m in dreadful need of a bath." "I don't know, Blue." Flash shrugged. "Don't you want to try? Just think about it." "I have thought about it." Blueblood remained adamant. "And the answer is no. We’re going home." "And you're sure about this?" Flash said, stepping in front of Blueblood. "Like, really, a hundred-percent, pinch-of-salt-in-the-coffee sure?" "Yes!" Yuck! You have the most abysmally atrocious taste, Flash! Blueblood flinched at the thought. "And there isn't anything in Equestria that you or..." the prince's words trailed off. Straight ahead, furious as a pack of Timberwolves, a mare was moving towards them at a steady canter. She seemed enraged, she was yelling, and she was drenched from the top of her hat to her hooves. Normally such a sight would be unremarkable—rain showers were a common weekly occurrence, and often one pony or other would forget the weather schedule and end up getting soaked. In this case, however, there was one significant difference: the mare in question was a dashing blond, and a rather fetching one at that. This is ridiculous, Blueblood thought, incapable of looking away. She's just a farmer, a common earth mare, a— He swallowed. "When I get ya, Rainbow Dash," the mare shouted towards the sky as she cut between both stallions. "I'll pluck ya wings like a hen at sunset, then I'll be makin’ me a cushion an’—" "There isn't anything that’d change your mind, eh?" Flash whispered to Blueblood with a snicker. "Oh be quiet!" Blueblood clenched his jaw. "Come on, it's a perfect opportunity!" Flash 'helpfully' turned him around to get a better view of the mare. Damn it! Even her tail is seductive. "You don't have to do anything extreme." Easy for you to say. Blueblood snorted. It's not your butt that'll get hurt! "Just use what you've learned and show her you're boyfriend material." Winking, Flash nudged him in the shoulder. "Easy peasy." "Easy please my left hoof," Blueblood's grumbled. In his mind, however, he was already going through possible scenarios. Should I compliment her mane? That's a safe bet. Any mare likes having her mane complimented. But what if she thinks I'm making fun of her? "Bro." Flash pointed at the distancing mare. She was already a fair distance away. "Think too long and you're gonna lose her." Blueblood looked at the road, then at the mare. I'll need a hoofscure after this. He sighed, then galloped after her. At this point he had completely no idea what to say. According to Flash's advice, mares liked when a stallion "acted naturally". Problem was, though, could he act naturally without any of his servants around? "Excuse me!" Blueblood shouted. Despite his best attempts, the distance between him and the mare remained mostly unchanged. As much as he hated to admit it, at his rate he would never catch up to her. "Excuse me, Mademoiselle!" No response. Is she ignoring me? he wondered. Or maybe she doesn't understand French? "Ex-excuse me, Miss!" He tried again, gasping for air as he did. Stallions weren't meant to gallop! If Auntie wanted us to gallop she'd have put wings on our hooves! "Ex—" The mare in front of him suddenly stopped and turned around. There was so much anger in her glare that for a split second, Blueblood considered if he shouldn't pretend he'd mistaken her for somepony else. "Tartarus has no fury as a mare enraged" the saying went. On the other hoof, she was a blonde rural beauty. "Excuse me, Miss," the unicorn clambered up to her, trying to hide his lack of breath. "I couldn't happen to notice that you're dripping wet." "Ya don't say?" The mare narrowed her eyes. "Heh, eh, yes, well… What I meant to say is..." I knew I should have thought if something better! Should I go for the hat? Or the saddlebags? "Of course you're wet. Anypony could see you're wet, because there's water dripping from your mane." Blueblood attempted a smile. The only thing he got in return was a deathly glance. So much for the humoristic approach. Thanks, Flash! "I mean to say—" "Look, if ya want to tell me somethin’, just go ahead an’ say it!" the mare snapped. "Ah ain't got all day!" "I think your mane is beautiful and I wanted to to know if I could help in some way," he said in one breath. Damnation! Blueblood cursed internally. He was hesitating between complimenting her mane and offering help, but like an idiot had mangled the two together. "Well, that's mighty kind of ya." The mare smiled, the deathly intent in her eyes having vanished, which was soon replaced by minor annoyance. "Ah always could use more help at the farm. Right this way." What? Blueblood blinked. Work? Me? I didn't sign up for this! I'm a prince! I don't do work! "Name's Applejack, by the so." The mare grabbed his hoof then shook it... along with the rest of his body. Whatever one might say, she definitely was strong. "Eh, Blueblood," the prince said, pulling back his leg white he still could feel it. "What is this farm you mentioned, Miss? We won't have to dig up plants or anything of the sort?" "Just AJ is fine," she guffawed. Definitely not a Canterlot chuckle, and yet it somehow suited her. "And no, we ain't touching plants one bit. In truth we ain't doing any real farm work. Ah just need somepony to keep an eye out as I load a wagon of apples and make sure no critters come close." "Thank the stars," Blueblood said, relieved. "I mean, I wouldn't want to ruin any of your hard work. After all, you seem like a pony who prefers to take care of business personally." "Right you are!" Applejack trotted along, drops of water falling off her mane with every step. "There ain't a task that ah can't handle! Was supposed to get Rainbow Dash to help me, but of course she had other things in mind." "Pranking, I assume?" Blueblood suggested. It wasn't difficult since she had been shouting about it just a few minutes ago. "When I get her, I'll..." the mare growled. Well, no question where the sore spot lies. Pranks and humour were definitely no-nos when it came to this mare. From this close Blueblood could fully admire her figure. Unlike most mares he had met, Applejack's body was all muscle and not the fake type that one gets from weightlifting and gym sessions. In comparison most of the Royal guards seemed quite relaxed, almost flabby. Musing on the matter, Blueblood levitated the mare's hat off her head. Applejack stopped dead in her tracks. The unicorn didn't even notice, casting a soft-dry spell—careful not to damage the material in any way—then started levitating it back down. Only at that point did he notice that the mare was no longer beside him. "Is anything the matter?" he asked, puzzled, trotting to her location. The hat followed, floating in the air until it landed safely on Applejack's still wet mane. "That's..." Hesitation was written all over Applejack's face. "Mighty kind of ya..." "Well, I couldn't in good conscience leave a beautiful creature such as yourself in such a dreadful state," Blueblood said casually. Do I brush a lock of mane off her face? It should work. But if it's too soon, I might get a slap in the face. "Say what now?" The mare arched a brow. By the stars! She's as dull as a brick in winter! "I was giving you a compliment," he added. "You're quite beautiful, and extremely hardworking—" I assume "—and I thought it would be a shame to not at least make you look slightly more respectable while we go to the farm." Applejack jaw fell open. "Shouldn't I have?" Fear crept into the prince's voice. If he was scared what Rarity might do to him when upset, he was utterly terrified what pain Applejack could inflict. One kick alone might well land him in the royal Canterlot hospital for weeks. "No one has given me a compliment before," she whispered, eyes staring blankly forward. "Seriously?" Seriously?!?
