Our story begins quite some time ago...
The sun shone over the first Summer Sun Celebration since Princess Twilight's ascension during the battle with Tirek that almost destroyed Equestria. Her ascension was already covered in multiple books and articles by the authors of Equestria. Including Golden Justice, the famous author who specialized modern history and myths. Her new pupil Starlight Glimmer stood proud by the purple Alicorn's side, going over a checklist as the final touches were put on the decorations by one overly enthusiastic Pinkie Pie. Great banners of gold, orange, and silver were spread across the town square. Every house was decorated with balloons, streamers, and impossibly placed artworks of the history of the celebration itself courtesy of the local Draconequis. Assorted vendor stalls were set up in a pattern that from the air looked like a sun with a half crescent moon inside, a new symbol created to honor not just Celestia but her sister Luna.
Even the stall canopies and building designs were crafted to reflect the colors and theme of the year. And from the sky one would see a massive star shaped stage out in the meadow, ringed by five other stars that were really the places where events and contests would be held throughout the day. One of the event spaces was filled with cooking supplies and ingredients, some of which were floating in air. A cotton candy cloud raining chocolate milk into a fountain stood on one side of the star shaped ring, Discord had insisted he be allowed to help with this event. Something about chaos magic working perfect with cooking, and his request had been approved because it was not only interesting but saved the town bits. However another reason for the approval was due to the festival being moved at the last minute into the town over the initial venue of choice.
The past few months had been spent renovating the old castle of the two sisters in an attempt to prepare it for the event, but sadly the Everfree had made such attempts difficult. The great wild woodland had fought back at attempts to clear the castle grounds of debris, and two months prior an unfortunate overgrowth had block the path to it entirely. No matter how much magic was tried, no pony could break through the barrier. Even the local Shaman Zecora had been unable to get the foliage to desist, and so the town was left with no option but to move the location. Many had laid bets on the barrier lifting after the festival, claiming that something in the Everfree was pulling a prank on them. But even if this was so, there were few places large enough for the celebration to be held at. It was expected that many guests would be arriving from all over to see Princess Twilight Sparkle, and few options could be found with the deadline so close at hoof.
So instead the event was to be held in Ponyville proper, which in a way was fitting since the new princess was from the small town. As much as the populace of Ponyville refused to admit it, they were a little possessive of their new Princess. In a way the barrier to the old castle had been a blessing, since now they would have more power over how to decorate and celebrate the event. The idea that her first big appearance at an event would be held elsewhere had been a sore spot before the announcement that it would be held in the small town. The mayor had booked multiple talented performers this year, besides their local musical celebrities, this year talent from all across the world had requested to perform. Sapphire Shores, Octavia, The Epiphonies from Griffonia, Stompmouth a famous Yak band, Monarchy, DJ-POn3, PurpleDay, Noctus Wind, Dreaming Humans, The Trans Continental Symphonic Orchestral Group, and many more were all booked to perform. Mayor Mare had had a complete "giddy fit" when she heard that Ponyville had managed to book Supreme Dreams and Tailstorm for the event. It was reported that she had almost defied gravity, and "shrieked like a little filly". A rumored visit by a new group called "The Rainbooms" was causing rumors to fly, no pony had ever heard of them before but Princess Twilight had personally recommended them.
The food and drink was not merely local this year, though the featured beverage and dessert was made from Sweet Apple Acres apples. It was rumored that the Apple Family had been working overtime to meet demand this year, as was evident by Applejack coordinating the distribution of the most recent delivery. A petting zoo and adoption space was featured at the edge of the main festivities, surprisingly it wasn't Fluttershy manning it but Spike. Apparently she had gotten an offer a few days before that in her words "I still can't believe it happened", and had asked the young dragon to take over for her. Carousel Boutique was filled to the brim with special limited designs that would be exclusive to the Summer Sun Celebration, and many ponies were rushing in and out to get their last minute orders for the event. As for the local weather pony, Rainbow Dash would be performing a sonic rainboom and cloud wrangling display. She had also volunteered to head the group that would use the clouds to write out what Princess Twilight would be saying. It was so that those who were unable to hear could enjoy the speech as well. According to Tank, by way of Fluttershy interpreting of course, she had been working nonstop for the past to perfect cloud writing for this day.
All in all the small town had gone above and beyond to make this event worthy of their new local princess, and to showcase that they could indeed throw a party worthy of royalty. Of course that meant that everything had to be perfect, which was a problem at the moment since a certain somepony was late.
"Where is she?" Twilight Sparkle asked in an agitated voice as she walked down the main street towards the valley where the star stage was set. Her new wings causing many to give her a wider berth than usual, the young Alicorn of Magic and Friendship kept glancing left and right searching for some pony. Her body was tense and stiff, stage fright and anxiety beginning to set in as the hour drew closer to her speech.
By her side walked another purple pony, a unicorn with a light lilac purple body and darker purple mane with a blue stripe. Starlight Glimmer had been taking notes all day, and relaying messages through her magic. Sighing, she turned to her mentor and friend to attempt to calm her down. "Twilight I'm sure she'll be here, you're like a daughter to her; to both of them. They are probably just running a little late.."
Twilight Sparkle's wings fidgeted in agitation. She knew that her apprentice, assistant, and friend was trying to help at a logical level. But at emotionally she was barely holding it together, after all the pony in question was like a mother to her. "Starlight, thank you for trying to help. But Celestia has never been late before, not to an event like this. Well not since Luna came back as Nightmare Moon and defeated her, which was what caused me to go out with my friends to find the elements of harmony, which made us the element bearers; and caused us to save Luna with the power of Harmony. That of course would eventually lead to me becoming an Alicorn when I fought Tirek, which is why I'm speaking in front of most of Equestria today, and is why I need her to be here to support me. Because if she isn't, I might have a complete and utter breakdown in front of most of Equestria!" Those last words were said with panic laden emphasis as the worst case scenario started playing through Twilight's mind.
Noticing the signs of one of her friend's classic panic attacks, Starlight Glimmer raised a hoof and patted her friend in a reassuring way. "Twilight calm down, breathe slowly, that's it. You're having one of your moments, remember what you told me? Don't focus on the bad things that could happen, focus on the good things." As she spoke to the Alicorn of Magic her words seemed to have an effect, as Twilight's wings stopped fidgeting as her anxiety lessened.
Starlight kept up her reassuring speech, she had learned over time that you had to stop Twilight before one of her episodes got out of control. They may be rarer now than they were before, but they still happened. "I'm sure Celestia has a good reason to be late, she's princess of Equestria and has duties sh has to attend to. Just imagine all the papers she as to sign before coming here. But take a look around, besides Celestia being late isn't everything going according to plan for the festival?"
Twilight took another deep breathe and looked around, Starlight was right. Everything looked like it was going relatively well, in fact it looked like things were ahead of schedule. Even Pinkie Pie had managed to keep things relatively to plan, though the party cannons on the roofs of the homes disguised as decorations was unusual. The statues and murals commissioned for the event lined the path she and Starlight now walked, and far ahead stood the stage that had been built in a little under a month. Sure her mentor, mother figure, and teacher was a little late but other than that everything was going perfectly. So perfectly a part of her worried something would come out of the Everfree and ruin it, but a magic enhanced quick look in that direction caused her to raise an eyebrow. A line of stone rabbits stood along the treeline, holding carrot spears and swords at the ready. Standing behind all of them waving a generals carrot sword was Angel bunny, turning her head to Starlight Twilight asked in confusion.
"Why is there an army of bunnies at the edge of the everfree?"
Starlight giggled and smiled at Twilight, "Discord insisted he be allowed to ensure that nothing would rampage out of the forest to interrupt today's celebration".
Twilight nodded with a soft chuckle escaping her lips, that did sound like the reformed Chaos Lord. But something still bugged her about it.
"So why rabbits? Why not create an army of soldiers or stone diamond dogs, or even dragons?," she asked with a bit of mirth in her voice.
With a snort Starlight responded in kind. "Discord mentioned something about rabbits being one of the most feared creatures on the planet. Then went on about something involving copying the essence of a Ker Bunnor into the stone bunnies, and that Angel was the only one who could lead them. Who knows though, it is Discord we are talking about after all."
Twilight chuckled, "Yes it is very much like Discord to make an army of killer rabbits to protect the celebration. I'm very proud of him for not going overboard this time."
Starlight grinned, remembering her former goals of world conquest. In a joking voice she said "True, he could have gone with sharks with lasers coming out of their heads or something like that."
That got a chuckle out of Twilight, who gave her apprentice a friendly shove with her wing. "Don't tell me you actually planned to do something like that Starlight. You're not planning to try to take over the world again are you?" She grinned at the unicorn beside her with undisguised humor in her eyes.
Starlight guffawed and then responded with a semi serious expression on her face, and a goofy imitation of the Canterlot noble voice. "Why of course not, I have learned the errors of my ways due to that time traveling fiasco." Then her face broke into a grin "Besides I would have used technologically enhanced proto drakes instead. Or Doom Butterflies, which are far more effective. Besides, nobody expects the butterfly inquisition."
The two mares stared at each other, mouths quivering slightly, then burst into uncontrolled laughter. The stress of the day evaporated as did Twilight's anxiety over the upcoming ceremony. Barely able to keep on their hooves, the two guffawed and chuckled for a few minutes before finally calming down to mere chortles of humor. Twilight was the first to speak as they tried to catch their breath after the laugh fest.
"Thanks Starlight *breathe* I needed that laugh." The purple Alicorn replied as she raised her head to look at the sky still searching for her mentor.
The light purple unicorn followed her gaze and smiled, breathing heavily from the giggles. "You're welcome *huff* Twilight, that's what friends are for. They help each other, especially when one friend needs to relax a bit." The two of them stood just off from the massive star shaped stage, that was a part of the area of the festival that copied the cutie mark on Twilight's flank.
Her eyes still searching the sky, Twilight responded. "I'm just worried you know? What if something happens? This day is not just important to me, but to all of Ponyville. I just," her eyes moved down from the sky to look across the field. As a lone butterfly flew by she continued. "I just want to make sure everything goes perfectly. So that Celestia will be proud of me, and so I can prove that everything I learned from her took you know? She's like a mother to me, I couldn't bear to disappoint her."
Her lavender eyes followed the blue and purple butterfly as it danced across the flowering mid summer fields. Her breathing slowed and returned to normal, as her friend looked at her with an understanding gaze.
"Twilight," Starlight began, her voice reassuring in tone and timbre, "You have done more things in the past few years than any other unicorn I know. You are amazing and brilliant, if a bit spastic at times. With your magic you have done so much good, and even become an Alicorn. To top it off you and your friends saved many lives, including that of a Lord of Chaos. But most of all, you used the power of friendship to save me from myself." The light purple unicorn took a breathe and continued as her friend tracked the butterfly with her eyes.
"Without you, this day would not be possible. This town isn't just celebrating Celestia and Luna today, but you as well Twilight. I think that right now, Celestia is probably thinking about you and how proud she is of you Twilight. You've proven you took all her lessons to heart, and have gone on to teach them to others. A Mother can't ask for more than that of a daughter." The last words were said with a slight sigh to them, as if a memory had been slightly recalled but pushed aside. Her eyes trained on her friends face, the light purple unicorn was shocked to feel a wing wrap around her.
Twilight turned her head, her new sleek form shimmering in the sunlight and a grateful smile on her face. "Thank you Starlight, you are a great friend." She lifted her wing and used it to indicate the butterfly she had been watching. "I think today, both of us should try to be like that butterfly. It knows what it wants, but it is happy and free while doing it. Not letting stress or anxiety plague it in it's forages for pollen, because everything is going perfectly for once and it's enjoying it."
Starlight looked at the butterfly fluttering free and nodded in agreement."I think that's a great idea Twilight," she said with a smile. As the butterfly twirled in the air, flitting to another flower she sighed. "Well I think we should get to the stage to get ready Twilight, do you feel up to it?"
The Alicorn glanced one last time at the blue winged butterfly in the field of many colored flowers, it's lazy yet focused path of flight soothing to her mind. Finally, she turned her head towards the stage where in the near future she would make a speech that would go down in history. A soft smile on her lips she looked at Starlight and nodded, "I think, no I know I can do this. Let's go Starlight, we have a perfect day ahead of us and everything is working out for once. I know Celestia will get here with Luna when she can, but for now we have a job to do." With that she took of towards the stage, her hooves lifting higher than usual as if to convey her happiness to the world as her wings hung care free by her side.
Starlight smiled and took off after Twilight, her hooves needing to take two steps for every one of the upbeat Alicorn's. Inside she was happy as could be, having herself finally put into practice the lessons she had been learning from her friend and mentor.
As they neared the stage Twilight turned her head at Starlight with a glint of mischief in her eyes. "So, Doom Butterflies?"
Starlight just laughed and hurried her pace to catch up to the Alicorn."Hey it was a great idea at the time!"
The two friends laughed together as they raced the rest of the way to the stage, teasing each other as only friends do. The sun shining high in the sky seemed to grow just a little brighter at the sight, or perhaps that was just a trick of the eyes. As the two walked to the backstage area to prepare for the speech that was going to be given in a few hours time, they barely missed a slight change in the sky. It was only for a moment, but in that split second of time what looked like the moon shone alongside the sun. As the moment ended the butterfly out in the fields rested on a flower and began to feed. An unusual multicolored flower of purple and yellow with dots of red in patterns on it's petals.
Back in the town, the festivities began in earnest as ponies from all over arrived to enjoy and celebrate the annual event. As the sun rose performers, celebrities, locals, nobles, and visitors all mingled; enjoying themselves before the main event would begin.
Far away, but not too far, in the city of Canterlot; something began to stir amidst the revelry. So our story truly begins.
Canterlot City, Capitol of Equestria, Royal Suite of Princess Celestia of the Sun.
A whirling blur of white, blue, pink, purple, green, and yellow flew from one side of the room to the other faster than the mortal eye could see. Drawers opened, closets exploded, and pillows flew into the air to the dismay of the ladies in waiting who had pressed themselves up against the door to the royal chambers. As the tornado of colors and magic flew past again a regal yet frantic voice could be heard coming from within. "Where is it, I could have sworn it was here somewhere. It can't be missing, no no no, it must be here. I know it's here, it has to be HERE!" The last word was spoken with the force of the Royal Canterlot voice as the whirlwind caused the blankets on the massive canopy bed to fly into the air and drape over the bed frame above. As the whirlwind stood still for a few seconds to search under the bed, one of the mares unglued herself from the door and spoke to the whirling tornado of the day.
"Um your highness," the young mare white and pink maned mare asked in a nervous voice; "are you looking for an old small chest with a insignia of swirling stars on it?"
The multi colored whirlwind froze, then after gracefully pulling itself out from under the great princess bed spun around and sped towards the maid in question. Stopping before the younger mare, the Princess of the Day looked like a total fashion disaster. Her mane and tail were flying about erratically, and her crown hung lop sided on her head. Her royal heraldic armor is thrown asunder about the room, as her eyes stare at the poor attendant she asked but a simple question.
"Twinkleshine, do you know where it is?" she said in a voice bordering on panic.
The young mare nodded slowly and pointed to the ornate bookshelf on the far side of the royal disaster of a room.
"It's over there where you always keep it your Princess, right by photo album volume XVII of all your students over the years."
The princess of the sun turns her head, as her eyes zero in on the focus of her search she smiles and her mane stops flying everywhere like a chaotic comet tail. Turning back to the young mare she nods quickly and in a more regal voice says "Twinkleshine, remind me to give you a raise for this." With that she near flies across the room to the bookshelf, lifting the chest off of it in her magic she heaves a sigh of relief. Despite it's age the ancient magic has kept it in perfect shape, except for a few dents here and there but they were there before. As the chest is floated over to the blanket-less bed behind her she spots something poking out of the back of the bookshelf. Despite the time, and knowing she is already late to one of the most important events of her life; her curiosity wins out. Moving closer she peers at the unusual object, it looks like a simple rope stuck in the wood of the shelf. Grabbing it with her teeth in less than regal manner, she gives the rope a tug. She is caught off guard by the sudden sound of ancient hinges creaking as the section of the shelf it was attached to swings open. Coughing as dust fills the room, Celestia casts an air purification spell to clear the air. The sound of two more coughing voices remind her of the presence of her maids in waiting; turning around she smiles her best regal smile at them. With her best royal voice she commands their attention at once.
"Twinkleshine, Minuette, would you please take the chest to my sister Luna and have her transport it to Ponyville as fast as she can. Take the letter on the nightstand with you too, tell her to inform Twilight I will be a little late to the Summer Sun Celebration."
The two mares nod, though a little unsure as to why the princess of the sun would put off such an important event. With silence and speed required of their position, each mare heads towards one of the two items. Twinkleshine picks up the chest in her magic and moves it off the bed, as Minuette lifts up the letter; that had in fact been blown off the nightstand and into a plant by the earlier whirlwind search. As the two turn to head out the door, Twinkleshine looks back at the Princess of the Sun, who is peering into the hidden corridor behind the bookshelf. Something feels off about this, and she momentarily contemplates asking the Princess to wait till later to investigate. But then Twinkleshine remembered it was not her job to question, just to do as she was told. Besides, based on the way Celestia had searched frantically for this chest it must be very important. After a moment of indecision Twinkleshine follows Minuette out of the royal doors and into the hallway, leaving the Princess of the Sun alone to investigate a mystery hidden under her very nose for ages.
As the two maids trot briskly down the hallways towards the wing of the castle where the Princess of the Night resides, Minuette speaks up.
"So Twinkleshine, do you think we might get to go to the Summer Sun Celebration with Luna?"
Snapped out of her thoughts the white mare shakes her head, still carrying the chest behind her in a magical grip. "Maybe? I don't know Minuette, what reason could Luna have to take us with? Besides it's not like Twilight would even..." her voice fades off as she remembers why she hasn't attended a celebration in Ponyville for so long.
Sure when the Princess of Magic came back for short visits she sometimes hung out with Twinkleshine and her old friends. But for all those years she had never kept up with letters, even though the mare was the Princess of Friendship. There were times that if it were not for Twilight remembering Twinkleshine, Minuette, and their other old friends she could have sworn that she had forgotten the friendship they had. But that wasn't important right now, her mission to delver this chest to Luna was. Once that was done she would go to downtown Canterlot to celebrate, after all there was little to no chance Princess Luna would ask them to com with.
As she comes back out of her thoughts Twinkleshine notices her friend staring at her, a worried expression on her face. Glancing about she realizes they had made their way to Luna's room while she was thinking.
Minuette pokes her friend lightly, worry on her face and in her voice. "Twinkleshine, are you alright? You were thinking about Twilight weren't you?"
The white mare with the pink mane moves the chest closer to her and nods affirmative in response. "It's just..What if Luna takes us with and Twilight doesn't recognize us?"
Minuette's expression changes to a sad smile of understanding as she replies to her friend. "Well if that happens, then I guess we'll have to enjoy the festivities together. Remember Twilight is really busy now, being a Princess and all; so if she doesn't recognize us right away I understand. After all we don't see her much these days, but I don't think she's forgotten us."
Twinkleshine reached her up to knock on the ornate door of the Princess of the Night, hesitating she asks her friend one last question.
"You don't?"
Minuette smiles back at Twinkleshine, "No I don't think she's forgotten us. I can pretty much guarantee the next time she sees us she'll freak out and give us a big hug. So do you want to ask Luna if we can go with her? It's up to you Twinkleshine, I'll stand by you no matter what you choose."
Her hoof paused in air in front of the door, Twinkleshine thinks hard for a few seconds. A smile grows up her muzzle as she responds, her mind made up by the hope of an old friendship being renewed. " Minuette, let's ask Luna to take us with her".
As the two smile Minuette's hoof comes down on the door in a loud knock. Not even a second later the door flies open to reveal the tall form of the Princess of the Night grinning. As her dark purple body and mane filled with the colors of the night sky fill the entrance to her quarters, the two mares are struck with a sudden feeling that they might have been overheard. Before they can ask the Princess of the Night speaks.
"If thou wishes to accompany us to the festivities in Ponyville, thou may. We will not stand in the way of dreams of friendship." Her voice more formal than Celestia's and with that slight old accent to it is not what stuns the two mares. The fact that they were not only overheard through the door, but that the Princess of the Night answered the question they had yet to ask does. Staring, jaws dropped for a few moments; the two mares take in the fact that their wish has been granted by the Princess of the Night.
Luna stares at the two mares before her curiously, they seem to be struck dumb by her proclamation. Sighing internally, the dark Alicorn tries to wake them from their state of shock the best way she knows how. With a softer voice Luna inquires, "Since thou art to accompany us to the Summer Sun Festival in the Ponyville, we wish to know why thou bring these objects to our door as well." Using her wing she indicates the ancient chest and freshly sealed letter the two maids are carrying.
Shocked back to reality by the inquiry by the Princess of the Night, Twinkleshine stammers back a response as quickly as she can. " Well you see your sister, her Highness Princess Celestia, wanted us to bring these two objects to you. They are both to be delivered to Princess Twilight in Ponyville, though she only indicated the chest should be given to her in person."
Tilting her head Luna searches behind the mares for her sister, not spotting or sensing her anywhere in the vicinity she turns her gaze back to the two maids before her. "Where then, is our sister? Why is she not with thou?," Luna asked.
Twinkleshine begins to speak, "Well umm.. you see.."
Minuette interjected, saving her friend from having to explain anything else in her nervous state. "She told us to inform you she would be late to the festival your Highness, Princess of the Night, Luna. But that you should go on ahead and deliver these two items to Twilight." The mare levitated the letter over to Luna, as Twinkleshine did the same of the chest that had become quite heavy in her magical grip.
Luna took both with ease, and upon seeing the letter was addressed to Twilight Sparkle personally cast a message delivery spell which caused it to disappear in a wisp of smoke and fly out of the castle. With that done she turned her attention to the chest, and gasped when she saw the insignia on the top. Such a treasure to be given to Twilight Sparkle, she had known her sister viewed the young Alicorn as her daughter yet she never expected Celestia to give her this. Moving out into the hall, she nodded at the Minuette and Twinkleshine while levitating the chest behind her. Walking forwards with intention to go to where her bat ponies awaited with a ready chariot and her gift for the new Alicorn, she turned her head back to look at the mares who stood still by the door.
With a chuckle at the realization they were still in some sort of shock, Luna called back to them. "Minuette, Twinkleshine, thou are both to accompany me to Ponyville. So thou should keep up, we are leaving."
The sound of the Night Princess's voice breaking them from their state of shock the two mares trotted as quick as they could to try to catch up to Luna as she led them towards where the chariot awaited. As they got inside, Luna placed the chest on the seat next to her as her mind wondered why would Celestia give Twilight this gift so early. Twinkleshine and Minuette on the other hand chatted happily to each other about what they would do at the festival, and how they both hoped Twilight Sparkle remembered them. As the chariot took off towards the small town where the celebration was to be held, a sudden change in the air around the palace was felt just as they left it's boundary. It wasn't something that the two mortal mares though much of, tossing out the idea of air currents crossing or a young Pegasus playing prank on the area. For the immortal Luna however, it brought a sense of dread that for the first time in centuries caused a shiver of fear to travel up her spine. Shaking her head, the Princess of the Night decided to focus on the celebrations they were flying towards instead. After all it was probably just a trick of her imagination, this was far too perfect a day for anything so horrible to occur.
Twinkleshine, Minuette, Princess Luna and the chest left in the chariot with the heraldry of the Night Princess; with well trained night guards pulling them towards the town of Ponyville. As they left the castle grounds a shriek broke through the sky, and for a few seconds both the sun and a moon were in the sky simultaneously. The moon disappeared as quickly as it came, but Luna could not shake a chill in her bones. When they landed at the Summer Sun Celebration grounds in Ponyville they were in awe of the event. Minuette and Twinkleshine got their wish, Twilight Sparkle remembered them. For the rest of the day after her speech, which is still remembered as the most important in recent history, they hung out with their old friend. The two old friends of the Princess of Magic and her new ones, the Elements of Harmony, got along as if they had always known one another. Everything was going perfectly.
As the day wore on though, the feeling of dread grew in Luna. She grabbed the chest from her carriage and searched high and low in Ponyville and beyond for Twilight Sparkle. When she eventually found the elements of harmony and the other two mares, it would be too late. The poor girls were sorely beaten, describing something even the elements couldn't stop. It had taken Twilight Sparkle, and flown away with her over it's shoulder. Fears proven to be true, Luna would call all those in Ponyville to evacuate. With little reason some refused to come, but most of us followed her to the Everfree. It is said that Discord, the reformed lord of Chaos refused to come with and cast a grand spell to displace the cottage and property of his beloved Fluttershy and part of the Everfree. He has not been seen to this day, so there is no way to confirm this. But we do know what happened next, once Luna had most of Ponyville and any others who had managed to escape their towns and make it to the ancient woods in one spot; she went deep into the forest to cast a great spell. Those of us who were within the proximity of the affected area were protected, and a great silver sheen covered the sky. It is said by those that witnessed it that upon completion of the spell, Princess Luna our savior, faded into a pool of shadows and disappeared, She has not been seen since that day, the day when the Two Royal Sisters fell and the outside was taken by the False King.
To this day it covers what we call our home, from the edges of Ponyville proper and the Library all the way around in a circle. We have all the lands of Everfree, and though we can leave the world outside is not the same as it was. Don't get me wrong, it's only been four years; but a lot can change in four years when you are not on the outside. I remember what it was like before, and I suppose we should be happy that the spell covered part of Ponyville as well as our Everfree woods. After all, if it hadn't many thing we take for granted would likely be destroyed. Like those apples grown by the Apple family, it was sheer luck their entire farm was affected; can you imagine a world without them?
Outside of our home, outside the Barrier of the Moon itself; the world has changed for the worse. Or at least that is what they say, so few leave the safety of the barrier so we don't know for sure. But those who return describe a world that none here would recognize, personally I know they are right. But I don't want to believe them, after all if it is as bad as they say it is; is there anything left to save on the outside?
This has been your recent history lesson with Bon-Bon, signing off from The Castle of the Two Sisters. Stay tuned for the newest music with your host DJ-P0N3, special guest singers tonight are the ever youthful Rainbooms.
Stay safe every pony, may the Moon protect you and the Barrier ever hold.
Eight years after the Grand Return of His Grace of the Infinite, Bringer of Progress, and True King of Equestria
Trottingham, Equestria
Rain splattered against the window of the brick and mortar building, crafting intricate patterns of screaming faces on the weathered glass. Outside the air is thick with a smog like substance that floats just above the streets like some sort of ethereal sentinel. The streets are empty at this hour, something that would seem odd almost a decade ago is the new norm. What ponies do mill about all bear the standard of his Grace of the Infinite, his hand that reaches across this land coats their hearts. None dare go out until the Hand of the Infinite are gone, so they do not leave till it is time for the populace to wake. Their sharp pointed ears shift back and forth as seemingly blind eyes stare ahead of them, Milky white pupils filled with twisting forms of grey, like parasites of the eye. Their once thick manes are covered by plated armor, tubes inserted at intervals pump multi colored fluid into and out of their bodies. Coats that may have once been normal seem more like scaly latticework now, impervious to magic. Their hooves are hidden beneath great metallic shoes that reach to just below their knees, where they merge with the false skin. These are His Hands, His eyes, and they ensure that this kingdom of Equestria stays under his control.
Many of these Hands were once those known by the locals, residents of this town that is now a small city. Once known for it's fine armor and playwrights, Trottingham is now a city of factories. Most of Equestria's power comes from this now filthy polluted area. And many who once chose to live here wish for nothing more than to leave. Old families hide what remains of their kin from the Hands as best they can, and whisper tales of the time before in hushed words under the streets. Vendors are no longer on the streets selling their wares, but stuffed into buildings where they are allotted a specific time to sell and create. That is if they were lucky enough to be allowed to continue to craft, many of the residents now work in the factories. The great monsters that belch this forsaken substance that coats everything in a veneer of grime and muck, turning even young foals coats a muddy dark hue.
The great power factories purify energy brought to Trottingham from all over, and distill it for use before it is transported along the great metal pipes that cross the land. Shuddering and sparking, the substance within cannot be called magic or natural by any sane mind. Those who work the pipe lines seem to age at double speed, their bodies poisoned by it's presence. Some say they hear whispers from the purification tanks, and rumors of spread of what happens to workers who can't make their quota. However rumors are just rumors, and to the public's knowledge no worker has ever been tossed into the processing vats.
Then again, there is very little information that is untouched by his Hands so rumors could be more than they seem. The dull coats of the factory workers have turned varying shades of grey, with hints of their once lustrous colors barely peeking through. Foals born after His Return mostly have coats that are naturally oily and slick, hairs that look more like latticework scales are not uncommon. It is seen as a sign of His blessing, and for those whose who give birth to such gifts they are taken from the factories and Trottingham itself. Though that is if they are lucky enough to bear foals at all. Many in Trottingham speak of other things being borne in place of foals. Monstrous freaks that are cast out or hidden away, such things did not happen before. But then again, there is no reason to dwell on the past.
The grimy cobblestone of Trottingham is his domain, as is the rest of Equestria. There is Manehatten, where great advances are made as grand devices are crafted in his name. All fashion is designed to please His eyes, and the once vibrant lifeblood of the city has dimmed to a quiet pulse. It is rumored that old ways have resurfaced, and that fiends in pony form walk that city that never rests. But rumors are merely rumors, what he says is truth and he speaks these rumors not.
Hoofington is supposed to have been wiped out three years ago after an attempted rebellion, the inhabitants refused to bow to his law. Where the township once stood great trees now grace it's land, none can enter that wood for the cursed ones still walk within. Other towns met similar fates, though the reason why his forces cannot combat the trees is not known. It could simply be that he cares not to destroy these trees, as he did the rest. Every king needs a forest to hunt in after all.
Canterlot is His home, little is known of it outside the grand dome and lights that can be seen from afar. Most of the power generated in Trottingham is routed there, though to power what few know. According to the news Canterlot is the most advanced of all the cities. A paradise where all residents are given whatever they need to live, and ponies don't need to scrounge for food. It is said that the old squabbles of nobles were crushed by the King, and a new system of nobility exists in it's stead. However in Canterlot all have a chance at a good life, and so many plead to gain entrance. However those who enter the King's City never may leave, for their own protection of course. Then again if the news about it is true, why would anyone want to leave?
Outside the cities and towns most of Equestria is now a barren land, with factories and factory farms dotting the landscape. Dead grass cracks under hoof, and lines of criminals clear and construct new areas for His Grace the Infinite. The griffin lands have barred travel to Equestria, and none have heard from the outside in a very long time. The Crystal Empire has not spoken or responded to calls for aid, and is presumed lost. It is possible the words the King spoke are true and he is the only reason Equestria still stands. No news or information is printed or broadcast without his say, his Hands see all. The radios spread his voice and more to the lands, as all live in tune to the new rules he set.
Obey and move towards the future,
Do not question the King or His hands.
The False Diarchs are gone, Order has returned.
Work for Order, strive towards Order.
The Monstrous and Wild shall be Purged or Altered.
Every time of the day, do as the schedule bids, do not deviate.
Bring forth the new world of progress, the infinite kingdom, the future of Equestria.
Do not rebel, for loyalty to his Hands shall bring prosperity to all.
All shall bow to The Infinite King of Equestria, true heir to the throne.
This is the world ponies know now, and some are too young to recall what it was like before.
In a simple hovel on the far edge of Hoofington woods, eyes stare out of greyed windows with one way panes. Time has passed strangely for her, each year while other move forwards she remains the same. The world has changed much when she left the Sanctuary of Everfree to see what lay beyond. That was four years ago today, and to her knowledge the plan has gone smoothly. Her hoof turns an old dial upon a great machine, it's existence is the key to changing things. The False King has taken control over everything, information is all altered to suit his plans. It has taken years to crack the code on the radio signals, but finally she has done it.
Sitting down upon an aged studio chair, she pulls out a series of CD's and inserts them into a banned device. Her favored instrument, a gift from her mentor in the sanctuary. A pink and purple mane is styled in a way her sister would find appalling, falling over her back in great waves and braids on one side. It contrasts with her off white pearl coat, that though well maintained is slightly shaggy in some places. Her hooves are covered by a pair of DJ gloves, and her eyes hidden by a pair of black designer glasses. Indeed she is far from chic, then again fashion hasn't existed for almost a decade.
Adjusting the dial once more, she flicks a switch. Static fills the air as lights blink to life, finally the screen flickers before her. An icon indicating success finally shines through. With a flourish she brings forth a microphone from the tables edge, turning it on she clears her throat.
In a smooth dulcet voice with an edge she does her best to mimic her mentor, DJ-P0N3.
"Hello Equestria, this is the Radio Rebel coming to you live from Revolution HQ. It's been a dark near decade, with the False King on his throne and monsters in the streets. Today it might change, or perhaps tomorrow. But either way here are some sweet, illicit, tones and tunes to light a fire in your heart. Music will always set you free my friends, so here is a sweet dose of freedom just for you!"
Her hoof flicks a switch as a great sound echoes through the nearby town. Radios are turning on by themselves and broadcasting her message and melodies. The Radio Rebel thinks she has prepared a wonderful lineup for today. Starting out with the classic Dancing in the Sun, it will quickly loop to music designed to excite and instigate. One of her own personal songs, Sweet Revolution, is in the queue today. It's based off of an old family song, she hopes her audience likes it. Not like she will ever know if they do.
Her eyes glance to a series of pictures on the walls, one in particular makes her give a sad sigh. In it is a younger version of herself, standing next to a gorgeous unicorn mare with a white coat and purple mane. The mare's cutie mark is three diamonds, and her eyes are smiling at the camera. It is one of the few things she took with her from the sanctuary. She glances out the one way window and whispers to no one.
"I'll find you sister, if it takes five or ten more years I'll find you. Just hold on till I get there, wherever you are. Tell the others to hang on too. We are trying our best out here, Equestria isn't lost yet. Deep down I know you are still out there, so don't give up. Help is on the way."
The Radio Rebel turns back to her music system and continues her musical rebellion, the hope of a nation thought lost renewed as she continues her work. This is her part of the plan, it is up to the others to do the rest.
