The first time I destroyed something innocent, I was seven years old.
Behind my parents' house, there was a small garden. My mother grew vegetables. For the longest time I was not sure why. Even with magical assistance, unicorns can barely grow anything edible. Plants, flowers, and vegetables are all quite beyond us. All that grew in that pitiful little garden were tiny, malformed carrots, tomatoes that were the wrong color, and peas that leaked a strange green puss. My mother should have known her garden was hopeless. She wasn't an Earth Pony, she couldn't grow food. That's how it works.
But she kept at it, year after year, and when her plants grew sufficiently big, she would force my father and I to choke down the revolting product. She would beam with pride, even though she herself must have been aware of how disgusting it tasted.
“Eat your greens, Rarity. They're good for you,” she would say. “And Celestia knows you could stand to lose a little weight.” I have never had a corpulent figure. But my mother would throw out the insult anyway, simply because she could.
She would dote on her pathetic vegetables, taking more pride in them than she ever did in me. Why? Was she that desperate for a hobby? Or did she want to cultivate something, enjoy watching it grow, without the resentment she felt whenever she looked at me?
I would guess the latter, but my mother was such a simple-minded creature, I am not sure that she was ever capable of such a level of self-awareness.
The garden served another purpose as well. It's where I would go after my father was finished with me. No one would go there at night, which is usually when he came to my bed. And I knew I couldn't risk letting either of them see me cry.
On most nights, after he was done with me, he would climb off of my bed and shuffle off to his room without a word. I would usually lie there for a few minutes, utterly motionless.
Once I had recomposed myself, I would climb out of my bed and leave my room, making sure to take my pillow with me. At night the only light in the house came from Luna's moon, bathing the narrow hallway between my room and the back door. I would step out of my dark room and into a moonlit corridor, trying my best not to let the wooden floorboards creak too loudly as I went.
Once I was outside, in the garden, I would head to the end of the yard where my mother kept a pile of fertilizer. I would squat over it, and finally unclench my nether muscles. Only then would I allow my father's leavings to finally drip out of me, and as they did, a part of me would feel strangely cleansed. The act was part ritual, part retribution. That pile of dirt and animal feces was the only place worthy of my father's seed. I was just a container, I had told myself, charged with transporting his filth to its rightful place.
Perhaps calling the place a garden was a bit too charitable. It was more akin to an oversized patch of dirt, dotted with strange growths that resembled tumors more than vegetables. It was also the only part of the yard which either of my worthless parents bothered to care for. Between the garden and the end of our property lay only weeds and overgrown grass.
I would sit there on the back door stoop, my cleansing ceremony complete, and I would wait for my feelings to return. I had learned to cloak myself in numbness whenever my father entered my room; I would separate myself from the world, and let his abuse pass. It was the only way I remained sane.
But once he was done, my feelings would begin to assert themselves. It took a little longer each time, but my emotions always came back, creeping from within me like ravenous insects. And when they did, there was always a moment, like a kick to the gut, when the full horror of what had just been done to me became fully realized in my mind.
And then I would cry. My second cleansing ritual of the night.
This was why I brought my pillow. By sobbing and screaming into it, I could release my pain and fear without the risk of waking my parents.
Much like I was the vessel for my father's seed, the pillow became the vessel for my emotions. It was a dumping ground, a place to rid myself of the horrible burden of feeling. Once I was done crying, I would no longer feel sadness, pain, or even numbness. I would be completely empty and cold.
I was looking up at the moon on that particular night. It was full that evening, and in those days still branded with the silhouette of the traitor princess. I often wondered, is she awake? Does she sleep endlessly within her beautiful shining prison, or does she live eternally upon a vast, lifeless rock, forever freed from the gaze of other ponies?
I hoped it was the former, because the latter scenario filled me with a strange envy. If I were on the moon, no one could harm me, I thought. But it was not Luna I envied most of all. It was the moon itself. It shined beautifully, brilliantly, admired by ponies everywhere. And yet it was empty, dead, and cold.
It was everything I wanted to be.
If I was beautiful, I thought, they would all love me. If I was cold, I would never have to love them.
To be barren of feeling, of sadness, of remorse, would that not be the greatest freedom? If I felt nothing, no one could harm me.
And no one could stop me.
I was a child then, you understand. It was only years later that I realized that to be free from feeling was its own prison, that the key was not to extinguish one's self, but to take total control. Control of self, control of others. Make the world yours, and it can never harm you. And even better, you can harm it all you like.
But on that night, I had not yet reached that epiphany. It was simply a night like any other, a night of rituals: crying, cleansing, and moongazing. I recall that it was unusually still on that summer night, so I had closed my eyes, shutting out all possible stimuli in an attempt to make myself hollow.
My meditation was intruded by a rustling in the grass. I opened my eyes. Something else was in the garden with me.
A rabbit emerged from the grass. I would love to say that there was something special about this animal, some unique quality which I remember all these years later. But there was nothing. He was a small brown rabbit, and nothing more.
The animal looked about, in the nervous manner that rabbits do, and hopped over to one of my mother's deformed carrots. He took a sniff of the thing and immediately backed away. The fact that a dumb animal had more sense than my mother did not surprise me.
I observed the rabbit with some annoyance. He had interrupted my silence, yet he had not done so out of malice. Was he even capable of malice? Rabbits do not hunt. They live their entire lives without harming other beings. Instead, other animals eat them. They are perpetual victims.
The rabbit took notice of me at last, and rather than run away, he hopped over to me, stopping at the base of my front hooves. In my young mind, this action was baffling. The rabbit had never seen me before. He did not know what I was capable of. I had learned long ago to fear others. The danger posed by strangers was drilled into us at school (though they never spoke of the danger posed to us by those who knew us best.) This rabbit, however, had no problem approaching a stranger. Rabbits are timid creatures, yet he had no trace of fear in him. Something had driven him to come to me, some quality within this beast which I could not understand. But then I looked in his eyes and saw it instantly:
Innocence.
He was small, probably quite young. I understood now. He did not know fear, because he had never BEEN afraid. In his short life nothing had ever threatened him harm, and so he still believed that the world was a safe place. He believed he could come and go as he pleased, and only kindness would be shown to him.
I tried to remember if there had ever been a time in my life when I had felt that kind of freedom, that kind of security. But I could not. Had I lost it before I was intelligent enough to recognize it for what it was? Or had I never had it at all?
Suddenly my jealousy of the moon was gone. My envy had found a new target, in the small creature which stood ignorantly before me. But unlike the moon, the rabbit was within reach.
And what I saw in his eyes disgusted me.
I moved my hoof toward the rabbit. I was no longer thinking. It cocked its head to the side, inquisitively.
I placed my hoof on the rabbit's back leg. And then I applied pressure. I didn't want it to move.
The animal let out a squeak. It was a short, quiet sound, almost polite. He was not crying for help, but simply informing me that my touch was hurting him. Surely I would stop immediately, the creature's logic must have went. It was unthinkable for one creature to intentionally want to harm another.
I pushed down harder with my hoof. The animal, still staring at me, needed a moment to register what was happening. I could see his eyes widen as some sort of primitive realization went off in his little mind. That thing within him that I envied so much was being rapidly destroyed.
I put all my weight on my hoof, and felt a tiny snap. The rabbit convulsed in pain, panicking at his sudden inability to move his ruined leg. He no longer looked at me. Good.
I stood over the beast, and concentrated. My horn lit up, as I formed a glowing magical field around the rabbit's thrashing body. This was no longer about extinguishing the creature's innocence. That had been done. Now I had to know what I was capable of.
How far could I take this without feeling anything? How close could I come to my ideal?
The magical field now surrounded the animal completely. I raised the rabbit up so he was now hovering at my eye level. Then I mentally chanted an incantation, and the field fashioned itself into a bubble.
An airtight bubble.
I stood and observed. The stupid animal was panicking, breathing heavily. It did not take long for him to use up all of his air. And then I watched, as the rabbit's eyes went blank with horror, as he gasped for air which wasn't there, as he slowly suffocated to death before my eyes.
I did not look away. My gaze held fast, as the rabbit's thrashing became more desperate. As he began to kick the bubble in a hopeless attempt at saving himself. And finally, I watched as he turned those same once-innocent eyes back at me. They had changed in those few short minutes.
There was a question in those eyes.
My answer was, “because you approached me.”
I looked at the rabbit until his movement had ceased completely. Only then did I dissolve the bubble. A limp, lifeless object fell to the ground at my hooves. I stared at it for several minutes, not sure what I was expecting.
I no longer felt angry. My anger had vanished the moment I had broken the rabbit's leg. I felt no sadness either, no remorse.
Did I feel enjoyment? I admit I did. Somehow the convulsions of the crippled animal had the most fascinatingly amusing quality to them. But more than that, the sense of power was intoxicating. I did that to him. His entire world was being consumed by pain that I had caused. At that moment I was at the center of his existence.
But that enjoyment had vanished once he began to run out of air. Whatever amusement the rabbit offered was now replaced with a single thought, repeated over and over in my mind:
“What a waste.”
I had forced myself to let him die, I admit it. I needed to know if I could kill, and so I had. But what was to be done with him now? I could no longer hurt the rabbit. I was no longer the center of his existence, now that I had snuffed it out. He was nothing but a rotting piece of meat now. His value as an experiment, as a victim, and as a source of amusement, had all been foolishly squandered.
For a moment, I considered burying the poor creature's remains. Then I thought better of it, and instead tossed it into the tall grass on the outskirts of my family's yard. It was never found. Some carrion birds had most likely came by and disposed of it for me.
What had I learned about myself that night? I was not sure. There was another test I had to give myself before I could be sure of what exactly I had become.
The following evening, my father came to my room again. The routine was the same as always. But that night, I did not remain in the garden after cleansing myself of him. I wandered out into the grass, past our property, and into the field. Before long, I had found the warren from which the rabbit had strayed.
I sat calmly in front of the burrows, until another rabbit approached me, much the same way as the first. In him too, I saw innocence. And once again, I knew, instinctively, that I had to destroy it.
When I left the warren, all four of the rabbit's legs had been systematically crushed. I left him where I had found him. I had crippled him, I had made him afraid. And then I had let him live.
That night, beneath the gaze of the Mare in the Moon, I realized who and what I was. For years, when my father violated me, I would fantasize about killing him, but somehow those dreams had never really satisfied my anger. Now I knew why. It was not my nature. Killing was for those who lacked creativity and ambition. Death was too final, too simple.
Too merciful.
When the time came, I would not kill him. I would destroy him.

I awaken in my beautiful room, kissed by the rays of Celestia's sun. I am surrounded by luxury and finery, so very far from the despicable squalor of my childhood.

Such a strange little rabbit has wandered into my garden.
I allow her the honor of bringing me to orgasm. Her talent does not disappoint, and I find myself crying out as I climax, something I rarely do. The little wreck of a foal beneath me takes notice of this, and smiles warmly.
“I love you,” she tells me.

Qualcosa l’aveva spinto a venire da me, qualcosa dentro l’animale che non riuscivo a comprendere. Ma poi lo guardai negli occhi e la vidi all’istante:
L’innocenza.
Era piccolo, probabilmente anche molto giovane. Allora compresi. Non conosceva la paura, perché lui non era mai stato spaventato. Nella sua breve vita niente l’aveva mai minacciato, e per questo lui credeva ancora che questo mondo fosse un posto sicuro. Pensava che potesse andare ovunque volesse e che gli sarebbe stata mostrata solo gentilezza.
Cercai di ricordare se ci fosse mai stato nella mia vita un momento in cui avessi provato quel tipo di libertà, quel tipo di sicurezza. Non ci riuscì. L’avevo persa prima di essere abbastanza razionale da riconoscerla per quello che fosse? O non l’avevo mai posseduta?
Improvvisamente la mia gelosia nei confronti della luna scomparve. La mia invidia aveva trovato un nuovo bersaglio, la piccola creatura che stava ignorante di fronte a me. Ma a differenza della luna, il coniglio era a portata di zoccolo.

Rimasi lì ad osservare. Lo stupido animale era nel panico, respirava a fatica. Non impiegò molto a finire tutta l’aria disponibile. Ed io guardai mentre i suoi occhi si riempirono d’orrore, mentre cercava di respirare aria che non c’era, mentre soffocava lentamente sotto il mio sguardo.
