The Monoliths, probes constructed by their creators to observe fledgeling civilisations and gather data on how they may fit in in the galaxy as a whole. Monolith #47,130 was posted on a quaint little world that it's sentient life forms referred to as Equus. It had been here for approximately 12,017 years silently observing the native species evolve and change over the millenia. It had a complex mind it was sentient and had emotions to better understand it's objective, long dormant, waiting patiently, until it was needed for whatever purpose, all it did now was simply make reports to send home to notify someone of its findings.

The Equestrians have been steadily developing, albeit slowly by comparison, the reason: the Equestrians can bend the universe to their will to some extent, therefore progress is slower and disproportionate due to the reliance on what the natives call 'magic'.
