Hoyt rose from his bed with a yawn, the day he had been waiting for had finally come. Today he was finally going to become a mage, and he was ecstatic. He hopped out of his bed and landed on the floor with a soft thump, pivoting around slightly, Hoyt flicked his hand and let his magic flow through his body. A deep purple light flashed from his palm as his bed began making itself. After his bed was made Hoyt snapped his fingers and the room filled with magical light. Hoyt walked over to his dresser and slipped on a black shirt and dark blue jeans. Moving to his left he grabbed his spell-book and began flipping through pages. After deciding everything was in order, Hoyt walked to his rooms door and gave the knob a gentle twist. Opening his door showed a large octangular room, the walls were made of grey stone bricks and the floors were made of polished dark oak wood. All around the room were door's similar to his own.
The room looked like it always had, except for a white chalk circle in the center of the room. Within the outer white ring was a smaller red ring, the red ring glistened as if it was on fire. In the center was a singular golden rune, the rings were comprised of multiple large runes. Each one was evenly spaced, and glowed slightly in the dim light of the room.
Standing at one side of the ring was a man, he was clad in a dark purple robe, the sleeves were long and wide towards the end. His hands were clasped together, the sleeves concealing them. His hood was drawn over his face, completely masking his identity. On the hood, right above where the man's forehead was a white triangle. The man himself had an almost ominous aura, the man looked up slightly, and seemed to peer through Hoyt.
"Greeting's Hoyt, I will be your proctor," said The man.
"My proctor," questioned Hoyt curiously.
"Each of The Awakened are tested individually, right now we stand in a pocket dimension of my own creation, here I will commence the ritual that will make you a full fledged mage," said the man with a flat, booming tone.
"I am ready when you are master," said Hoyt respectfully, giving a little bow to the senior magician.
"Good, I can tell you are eager, I must tell you to please pace yourself, we have a long day ahead of us," said the man with a slightly softer tone.
"Right sir," said Hoyt with a more level tone.
"Now, I must ask you to stand in the center of the magic circle, on the golden rune," said the proctor gesturing towards the center of the circle with one arm.
Hoyt nodded curtly and began walking towards the center of the circle. The second Hoyt crossed the white runes he felt a large amount of pressure pushing down on him from above. Hoyt's breathing increased and deepened as he tried with all his might to stay on his feet.
"You must push through it, this is a necessary evil," said the proctor coldly.
"Y-yes sir," choked out Hoyt.
Hoyt continued his walk, with every step the pressure grew. Finally, after what felt like an eternity Hoyt finally reached the red ring. Right when he though his pain was over a deep agonizing burning feeling ripped through his body. Hoyt cried out in pain, all the while the proctor just gazed through him. As Hoyt forced himself to go further the burning feeling grew and increased, but as this happened the pressure lessened.
Hoyt finally made it to the center, he was panting heavily and sweating buckets, but he still made it.
"You did that faster than I thought you would," said the proctor with a flat tone "I honestly didn't expect you to succeed."
"What," asked Hoyt with a tone of disbelief.
"I thought you'd crack and give up, anyway we should begin the ritual," said the proctor.
The proctor spread his arms out wide and began chanting.
"Exors detho egre launk drecos plethy brethos mo-de-la extrusum bleth OMUNDUS," bellowed the proctor.
The circle's around Hoyt began glowing and shimmering, the sound of thousands of bells filled the air. Before long the light became blinding.
"W-what... this isn't what's suppose to..." the proctor tried saying but was cut off as the light from the circle turned him to ash.
The light kept growing in intensity, soon the light was so intense it actually began burning Hoyt's skin. Hoyt stood in silent terror as he awaited what he thought would be his inevitable doom.
But his doom never came, Hoyt stood with his eyes closed, waiting for something to happen. But nothing did. Hoyt slowly opened one eye and was surprised to find he was now in a dense dark forest. Panicking Hoyt rapidly glanced all around himself, trying to find something that was familiar, but found nothing.
Hoyt was about to sit down but he heard a loud feminine scream come from his left. Reacting on instinct Hoyt ran to where the scream came from, only to find a small, pale purple, trembling unicorn.
"Aren't unicorn's mythical," questioned Hoyt.
"S-stay away," said the unicorn with her back turned towards Hoyt.
Hoyt wondered who she was talking to, but quickly noticed the five wooden wolves standing across from the adorable little equine. Hoyt rolled his eyes and jumped over the pony, landing right in front of her. She seemed terrified of him for a moment but Hoyt quickly cast her a comforting smile. The little pony seemed to understand he wasn't a threat and tried to relax. Hoyt turned back towards the wooden wolves and quickly began channeling his magic, raising up both his hands Hoyt watched as fire began dancing across them. With a quick motion Hoyt pushed his palms out facing the wolves and released spouts of flame at them. The wolves were consumed by magical flames and within seconds they were nothing more than smoldering mounds of ash.
Hoyt turned back to the equine.
"Are you okay," asked Hoyt worriedly.
"Y-yes... I'm fine," said the equine warily.
"My name is Hoyt, what's yours," asked Hoyt trying to start a conversation.
"Starlight Glimmer," said Starlight more confidently.
"Do you by any chance need anymore help," asked Hoyt.
"A-actually... could you by any chance walk me back to Ponyville, I don't feel to safe going back alone," said Starlight bashfully.
"Why'd you come out here alone in the first place," asked Hoyt.
"I was helping a friend, she had run out of herbs and asked me if I could get her some more," said Starlight with a smile.
"You seem to be a very trusting individual, I am a stranger after all, and an alien, " said Hoyt.
"Most, if not all, stranger's are merely ponies you haven't befriended yet," said Starlight with a smile.
"In that case, which way are we going," asked Hoyt.
"It should be this way," replied Starlight pointing to the left.
"Shall we," asked Hoyt politely.
"Mhmm," replied Starlight merrily skipping down the path.
Hoyt followed her, standing to her side with his hands in his pockets.
"So.... what do you do for a living," asked Hoyt awkwardly.
"I'm a student," replied Starlight cheerfully.
"Me too," said Hoyt with a smile.
"What are you exactly, and where are you from, I know it's rude to ask, but I must know," asked Starlight curiously.
"It's no problem at all, in fact I completely understand, Human is my species, and I think it's safe to say I'm from another world, or well, plane of existence at least," said Hoyt smiling.
"Wow," said Starlight in awe "so I could very well be the first pony to ever meet, and hopefully befriend an alien."
"I guess, I don't really know, but I'd like to be your friend, you seem interesting," said Hoyt chuckling.
"Really," exclaimed Starlight excitedly.
"Of course," said Hoyt smiling.
Hoyt and Starlight continued their back and forth conversing for about thirty minutes, and Hoyt started to really like Starlight. She was sweet, kind, and honest, but also determined, open minded, and outgoing. Traits he'd really like in a girl, if only she were human.
Hoyt and Starlight finally made it out of the forest and were immediately surrounded by six other ponies. All but one of them didn't even notice his presence. And the pony that had seemed very very interested in him, she was yellow with a pink mane and tail. She continued to stare at him, a curious smile plastered on her face, all the while her friends scolded Starlight for going into the Everfree by herself. The small yellow equine took four cautious steps towards him.
"H-hello," she said in the smallest, and sweetest voice Hoyt had ever heard "my name is Fluttershy, you are."
It was then that the other's noticed his presence, their reaction's were mixed, but most showed shock and even fear towards his presence.
"My name's Hoyt, it's a pleasure to meet you Fluttershy," said Hoyt trying to sound friendly.
"Oh my, where are my manners, girls this is my new friend Hoyt, Hoyt these are my friends, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, and I guess you already know Fluttershy," said Starlight.
"Hello all, it's a pleasure to meet you all, I seem to be stuck here in this dimension, could you lot by any chance help me," asked Hoyt hopefully.
Twilight nodded eagerly "of course, though I'll have to send a letter to Princess Celestia, but I'm sorry to inform you that... if you're from another dimension we... we have no way of helping you," Twilight was close to tears at the end.
"She genuinly cares about my well being... how could I be upset, I mean yes I'll probably never get to go home but... it could be worse," thought Hoyt glancing around at his newly acquired friends, he felt warm... almost like, despite his obvious differences, he belonged. It made him greatly happy.
Hoyt held Twilight's gaze and smiled "thank you for giving it to me straight Twilight, I feel much better knowing how things really are."
Twilight brushed a stray tear away and sniffled "r-really, aren't you mad or at least upset."
"Of course not, how could I be, I've known you ponies for just about five minutes now, and yet I feel we've already became VERY close friends. For example, you Twilight, you knew that you couldn't send me home, and instead of lying to me in order to keep me from freaking out, you told me the truth outright. For that, I am grateful," said Hoyt with a comforting smile.
"If you need somewhere to stay, my castle has a plethora of spare rooms," said Twilight with a chuckle "I wouldn't mind having you stay there till we can figure things out."
"I wouldn't want to be a bother," said Hoyt shaking his hands dismissively.
"Nonsense," said Twilight firmly "I insist."
Hoyt knew he wasn't going to win this argument "fine."
Starlight squealed with glee, attracting Hoyt's attention.
"What," asked Hoyt with a confused expression.
"You said you were a student too did you not," Hoyt nodded "then we could study together, it'll be fun, study buddies forever," said Starlight with a dramatic flare.
Hoyt could only chuckle at the display, it was going to be a bumpy ride, but he was going to be happy.
Though he still didn't know why he was so trusting of the ponies, but he chalked it down to their overwhelming kindness.
Or contagious personalities.
Chapter 2: One Week Later
Author's Note
Alright, slow chapter, things'll get more interesting later, promise.
Chapter 2: One Week Later
A week had passed since Hoyt appeared in Equestria, and a lot has happened. Starting off with quick recap, in the past week Hoyt has moved into Ponyville and was starting to slowly settle in. The ponies were a little wary of him at first, like REALLY wary. For the first four days they'd run away at the faintest sight of him. A few, namely a mint green unicorn, were able to come out of their shells and approach him, only to find out their fear was misplaced. Which leads us to the second thing that happened, Hoyt was approached by the Princess of the sun herself, she was a lot nicer than he thought she'd be, like a LOT. She, thankfully, showed sympathy to his plight, and offered to grant him full citizenship and help him integrate into pony society, on the one condition, he has to write her a 'Friendship Report' once a month. The Friendship Reports he's suppose to write are very similar to the ones Twilight wrote, the main difference is, Celestia was more interested in what happened between Hoyt and his friends, rather than what he learned.
Hoyt, of course, agreed and that leads us to the third thing, the party. Scared the living hell out of Hoyt, you're probably wondering how a party scared him. Well it wasn't the party itself, so much as it was the way it was presented. Hoyt was just walking back into the castle, minding his own business, when out of nowhere the little pink devil, named Pinkie Pie, popped out of no where and yelled surprise. At least the party itself was nice, if a bit childish, but he had fun, and that's all that matters. With that, we're now back to the present.
Hoyt sat in the castle library across from his best friend, Starlight Glimmer, they both had their noses buried in books and were reading the evening away.
"Hoyt," questioned Starlight putting down her book.
"Yeah Stary," said Hoyt eliciting a blush from Starlight at the mention of her new nickname.
"Why were you so.... alright with being stuck here, I mean you're in a completely different dimension, amongst completely alien creatures, and you're completely alright with it," asked Starlight with a worried expression.
"Why are you just asking this now," asked Hoyt looking up from his book.
"Because I didn't think it was my place. I didn't feel we were close enough friends for me to ask you such a personal question," replied Starlight, her ear's pinned back and a sad look on her face.
"Starlight," said Hoyt sadly as he put down his book "you're my best friend, you were the first pony I met when I first arrived here. You've helped me get the ponies of Ponyville to approach me long enough to realize that I'm nice and only want to co-exist. Not only that, you also helped me come to terms with being stuck here, despite how I acted, I was very erratic minded and scared at first. You helped me though, your friendship, your kindness, your honesty, and most of all your support, have helped me come to terms with all that has happened. While everything has happened so fast, and we've only known each other for a week, you are already irreplaceable to me, you can ask me anything, or say anything to me, and I won't get offended or think any less of you. Besides, there's no reason to fight something I have no control over, this is how things happened, and I'm content with that."
Starlight listened wide-eyed to what he had to say, completely enraptured. Every word made her heart soar, and the emotion put into the words only served to widen her smile. She tried to, but couldn't fight the persistent and faint blush that placed itself on her cheeks.
"Hoyt, I feel the same way, I was at one point a rather bad pony, but your friendship has helped me to put what I did in the past where it belongs, it's nothing more than a bad memory now. You too, have become irreplaceable to me, I honestly think I'd lose my mind if I lost you," said Starlight grinning widely.
"I'd like to stay and continue chatting and reading with you, but I have a Friendship Report to write. While Celestia didn't give me an exact date, I feel she wanted the first one as soon as possible," said Hoyt with a grin of his own.
"I understand, here," said Starlight levitating over a blank scroll, an ink well, and a quill to Hoyt.
"Thanks," said Hoyt with a polite nod.
"Here we go, first Friendship Report, no pressure," thought Hoyt nervously.
Dear Princess Celestia,
It has been two days since you had come to me to assess my situation, and I do not believe I have truely thanked you for your kindness, your understanding, and most of all your sympathy, I'll get to you on that later, I give you my most sincere promise. Anyway, as per requested, this shall be my first, in most likely a long line of Friendship Reports.
Today started off as what had become the usual, Twilight greeted me in the morning as she always does, I had tea with her (which I was kinda reluctant about at first) and as usual that ended off stunningly. But something took a turn after that, when I met up with Starlight (like I do everyday), she seemed kinda worried, and also distant. When we had breakfast together, she was completely silent, usually she'd ask about event's of days prior, but she seemed kinda nervous. I was, of course, curious and ~~a little bit~~ very worried about my very close friend, but figured she was just tired. After breakfast, we headed to the library, as we always did after breakfast and began reading, while this was of course normal for us, she still seemed quiet, distant, and aloof.
Instead of asking for my opinion on something she was reading or had read before, she just sat there, almost isolated. I was REALLY starting to get nervous at that point. Luckily, she finally spoke, but what she said confused, and hurt me. She had asked me why I was so at peace with being stuck here, not realizing the impact she and her friendship had had on me. After explaining that she was the main reason for me being so at peace I could... feel us growing close together.
I know this must me a lame excuse for a first Friendship Report, but it's all I got, and I figured you'd want the first as soon as possible. Anyway I hope you enjoy, and I promise to make a better one next time.
Sincerely Your New Friend, Hoyt.
"All done," said Hoyt placing the quill on the table with a happy sigh.
"Hey Hoyt," said Starlight getting his attention.
"Yeah Stary," said Hoyt smiling.
"Instead of doing what we usually do after we finish reading, what do you say we go down to Sugarcube Corner for some sweets," asked Starlight hopefully.
Hoyt's smile widened "of course, I'd love that, any excuse to hang out with you is good in my book."
Starlight blushed "g-great, we should be going now, so we can beat the afternoon traffic."
"Right, just gotta give this to Spike," said Hoyt standing up, completely confused by what she meant by 'traffic.'
And as if the universe had heard him, Spike walked in.
"Spike, just the guy I was looking for," said Hoyt walking over and bumping Spike's fist with his own.
"Twilight figured you had started writing your first friendship report and sent me down, I have no idea how though," said Spike taking the scroll in his claw and igniting it.
"You're a gentleman and a scholar Spike," said Hoyt happily.
"Don't you forget it," said Spike with mock authority.
Hoyt turned back to Starlight "shall we."
Starlight merely nodded and hopped from her seat.
It took fifteen minutes, but Starlight and Hoyt made it to Sugarcube Corner, only to find Pinkie eagerly waiting for them.
"HEY YOU TWO," yelled Pinkie excitedly.
"Pinkie," said Hoyt chuckling "calm down."
"Okie-Dokie-Lokie," said Pinkie happily.
"Oh hello dearies, what'll you two be having," asked Mrs. Cake from behind the counter.
"I'd like a double fudge brownie.... and a Dr. Pupper," said Hoyt tapping his chin.
"I'll have the same, except I want a Para-Sprite, preferably not the animal," said Starlight giggling at her own joke.
"Right away," said Pinkie giggling as she shot off into the kitchen.
"Go ahead and grab yourselves a table dears," said Mrs. Cake.
"Thanks," said Hoyt with a smile.
Hoyt looked out into the small cafe/ bakery, and saw a booth right next to a particularly noticeable mint green unicorn, and a cream colored earth pony. Hoyt walked over and sat with his back facing the mint green mare, Starlight sat across from him, smiling in anticipation about what she know's he's about to do.
"Hey, you got the stuff," asked Hoyt mimicking the stereotypical drug addict.
"In Faust's holy name Hoyt," said the mare annoyed, but she still had a smile on her face "would you let that go."
You're probably wondering what she's referring to, well, after Hoyt had met Lyra (the mare he's speaking to) they agreed to meet up to hang out, as she found him enjoyable to be around. She had told him to meet her at her marefriend's candy shop, and lets just say his timing couldn't have been more perfect. When he walked through the front door of the store, the first thing he saw was Lyra, she also just so happened to have her muzzle covered in powdered sugar. All the while her eyes were bloodshot because she accidentally squeezed a lemon into them, her mane was also disheveled, she honestly looked like a drug addict. Ever since then, he's taken every offered chance to make a drug joke, which she says she hates, but he knows she loves. After that he met Bon-Bon, and after a misunderstanding (she thought he was trying to steal Lyra from her), the two became close friends. They also discovered they like the same kind's of candy. Enough of that though, back to the present.
"As soon as it stops being so damn funny," said Hoyt chuckling.
Lyra groaned in mock annoyance "you're intolerable."
"Down with drugs legalize marijuana," said Hoyt.
"You two... I swear," said Bon-Bon shaking her head with a smile on her muzzle.
"Hey Bonnie, what are you two doing here anyway, trying to scope out the competition," said Hoyt waving to the cream colored earth pony.
"Oh nothing much," said Bon-Bon with a smile "just taking this dastardly drug dealer of a mare out for our one year anniversary."
"Aww, congratulations girls, I'm super jealous," said Starlight dreamily.
"You two are by far the cutest couple I've ever seen, and I've seen Twilight and Celestia when they were being, ahem, affectionate," said Hoyt smiling.
The two mares blushed and thanked them for their complements. After that, Bon-Bon and Lyra moved over into the same booth with Hoyt and Starlight. Much to their dismay though, the young couple didn't stay long as they had other things to attend to. After they left Hoyt's and Starlight's food finally arrived, though they didn't mind the wait, it gave them an excuse to talk to dear friends. After they finished eating, Starlight attempted to pay, but was stopped by Hoyt.
"I'm the gentleman in this situation, I should be the one to pay," said Hoyt smiling.
Starlight blushed and nodded at his chivalrous kindness. She liked chivalrous stallions, and Hoyt was just that.
You're probably wondering how Hoyt got the dough though, well it's simple really. Noticing his organizing talent's, as well as his advance coordinated way of thinking, Twilight hired him as one of her personal 'helpers.' And honestly, after all the hell she's put him through, Hoyt felt a whole new level of respect for the little purple drake that he has come to call friend.
Hoyt happily paid the bill, and offered his hand to help Starlight from her chair, which caused her blush to deepen, she REALLY liked a chivalrous stallion. Hoyt also held the door open for her, which only served to make her even happier as the two began their calm walk back to the castle.
Hoyt thought back to how he came to be here.
"Was it merely an act of fate, was I destined to meet this gorgeous mare," though Hoyt, silently looking over to his equine companion.
....There wasn't a doubt in his mind, this was fate.
Canterlot Castle Shortly After Hoyt's Letter was Sent
Celestia sat in her throne, looking through petitions when she heard a light popping sound to her left. She used her magic to levitate the new piece of parchment over and unfurled it eagerly. What she read brought a large, happy smile to her face.
"It pleases me greatly to know my little human is settling in nicely, and that he is growing closer to his best friend," said Celestia her smile never wavering.
Celestia rolled the scroll back up and set it to the side for later.
"Now, back to the nightmare that is ruling a kingdom," said Celestia with a sad sigh "I do hope Twilight brings an extra helping of snuggles tonight, I'm gonna need them."
