Humanity's Salvation
Chapter 0 - Prologue
Load Full StoryA deep sigh escaped my lips as i stared at the sun as it rose over the mountains. I had done it so many times before but i never paid any attention to it as I am today. The sun rose and as it did color splashed over the bleak sky, filling the deep blue with beautiful shades of pink, orange, red, and yellow.
It was breathtaking, watching the colors merge and mix as if some artist had mixed them himself.
With a peacefull sigh i stood from the rock i had used as a seat and stretched, my back popping blissfully with the motion and began to gather my things. I packed my camera, laptop, solar charger and tools into my bag before sliding my phone into my pocket as well as my knife and throwing my black backpack over my shoulder, sliding my other arm through as i had any other time.
I began to make my way to the mountain side i had just climbed up minutes before when A strange sound caught my ear.
It didnt match the sounds of the mountain i had come to know. It showed no signs of being one of the call for the many birds that filled the surrounding trees, nor did it sound anything similar to the gentle crunch of the fallen leaves that coated the ground in a devine layer of browns, oranges, and reds.
Rather it sounded almost like a loud whistling sound. I looked around for the source only to find a small dot in the sky that seemed to be coming closer by the second.
Confused at first, i decided to look closer and pulled out my binoculars, looking throuh them only to find out that the object in question was a large metal canister that was soaring through the air quickly getting closer and closer to my location. Innitially confused, i explored the object with my eyes.
It clearly wasnt any sort of drone as it was more of an oval shape. It couldnt be cargo of any sort as it seemed to small to hold anything! And it surely wasnt any form of transportation as it was far too small. Looking closer i noticed writing on the side. "TI-83." I whispered to myself.
I thought on it for a second. "Where have i heard that before? I know i recognise it from somewhere..." i thought, only for the pieces to click in my mind.
I remembered an article on the newse earlier that morning. Something about one of the enimies of the united states creating a new warhead far more powerful than any known before called the TI-83. It was said to be able to flatten every piece of land in the surrounding one thousand miles.
I paniced and turned to run down the hillside, sprinting down the mountain as i felt the branches smacking my face and the rock and dirt beneath me give way under my force. I tore down the mountain and through the weed line, my breathing harsh as i turned and sprinted down the rode to my house.
I saw it, a simoke trailer that myself and my family occupied. My mom and dad were on the sidewalk outside my home looking at the bomb that continued to soar to my location as both of my brothers sat there with them, trying to solve what it was.
"Run!" I screamed. They turned and looked at me, giving me a fearfully confused look.
"Matthew what is that thing?" They shouted back, myself only two hundred metes away now.
"A bomb now run! Get in the bunker!" I shouted as they finally realised what was happening.
My words held effect as my family immediatly reacted, my brothers rushing to the shelter as my mom and dad rushed into the house.
I continued to sprint, now only one hundred meters away as they came back out of the house, food and water in their hands as they ran to the shelter. I turned into the driveway, now only fifty meters away as my dad climbed into the bunker we built for just this situation. My mother turned and looked at me, tears running down her face as i approached quickly.
"Hurry!" She shouted in a voice full of fear as the bomb closed in on us.
I came closer and closer.
Forty meters.
Thirty.
Twenty now.
Only fifteen more and i would be there.
Just as i reach for my mother it happened.
The bomb hit just between us. I saw it make contact with the ground, time seeming to slow to a halt.
In that moment i saw everything.
I saw the face my mother made as she realised we would all never see eachother again. The face of my father that showed he knew he had failed to protect his family. I saw the bomb exploding, flames claiming everything as a bright flash began to fill the air. I saw the ground crack beneath the metal shelling that was beggining to part and give way to more of the hellfire that seemed to show no end.
And lastly, i saw the black void absorb my body just as a searing heat caught my back before i vanished, never again to see the ones i loved.
