Chapter 1: You've Got Mail!
Law Jensen, former cadet of Manehattan's Police Academy, had gone out to his mailbox to collect his daily mail. He expected the usual, bills, promotional articles, coupons, and the occasional letter from his remaining family member. He found none of these things in his silver mailbox. In fact, his mailbox was completely empty, for the first time during his residence in his current apartment. He would have to pay a visit to the local post office.
After getting ready, making himself presentable and such, Jensen set off to the post office. It wasn't all that far from his apartment, just a quick trot away. He was greeted by ponies in the local area but didn't acknowledge them in the slightest. Jensen's mind was still on the events at the Academy. He remembered being top of his class, specifically excelling in the physical tests. Yet the instructors had said otherwise. He had almost walked past the post office, lost in his thoughts. 'Oh, I'm already here it seems.' Jensen thought quickly while entering the building. Inside there was a single Pegasus behind a service desk.
"Hello sir, how may I be of service to you?" Greeted the lavender pegasus as Jensen walked up to the counter. He had a hat on his head that stated "M. Mail Service", in cursive letters. Behind the stallion was a mirror. Jensen could see his own reflection quite clearly, his messy mane and tail, and the sharp point of the horn on his head. It was a reassuring sight to himself, to know he was all there.
"Hey there, I came down to the office to check if I had any mail?" The dark cyan unicorn replied to the initial greeting.
"Mail should've been delivered this morning sir. Nonetheless, I'll take your name and see if we have anything here for you. Your name is...?" He held a pen with his right wing over a piece of paper.
"My name is Jensen, Law Jensen. There should be something there, I never received my daily mail." Jensen yawned quietly. He had almost forgotten that it was fairly early in the morning, or at least, fairly early for his schedule. The pegasus scribbled his name down and put the paper through a slot behind him. The pony mumbled something quickly to the wall, presumably there being another pony behind it. While this went on, Jensen noticed a new pony had entered the post office while looking at himself in the mirror. It was a mare, who looked to be slightly older than himself. She too, was a unicorn, who had a dark lavender body, with darker hair that had a single pink stripe going through it. He couldn't see her cutie mark due to the full body black suit she was wearing including and white undershirt and tie. Lastly, she had a dark pair of sunglasses that adorned her face, covering her eyes.
"Sorry sir, according to Burnie back there, there's nothing here for you. Now if you would kindly move along so I can address the mare beside you, that would be lovely." The stallion nodded in Jensen's direction as the dark-colored unicorn turned around and walked to the exit of the office. He was about to leave when the voice of the pegasus rang out. "Mr. Jensen! Mr. Jensen! You have mail! Don't leave yet." Jensen turned one-eighty degrees and walked back to the counter, passing the exiting mare along the way.
"I could've swore you just said that there was nothing here for me." The unicorn looked at the pony behind the desk skeptically.
"Well there wasn't until that nice mare just dropped off a letter for you." He used his right wing to push it towards Jensen. The unicorn picked it up with his magic and walked off without saying another word, not caring for anymore interactions with the mail pony. The envelope was enshrouded by a faint blue glow, which signified the use of his magic. He opened the doors with his magic and walked out onto the sidewalk. Without looking where he was going he walked into the middle of the street, his attention on the letter. A loud honk sounded and the noise brought him back to reality. There was a small, blue, one-seat car to the left of him. The stallion hurried over to the other side of the street, while memories of the first automobiles flooded into his mind.
They were quite ingenious, the first cars. Some of the most brilliant unicorns of their time had discovered a way to convert magic into a source of energy. This energy, the put inside gems, or runes as they had called them. These gems were able to do all sorts of things, such as create a light source or keep a watermill running. They were able to use these gems to manufacture what they at first called, 'Poniless Chariots'. The runes acted under voice commands, allowing ponies to tell them what they wanted them to do. Nowadays they use them to power cars, telling the rune what destination they want to go to, and the rune will control the components of the car such as the wheels and speed.
Jensen's focus soon left the thoughts of cars and went back onto the letter. With a few seconds using his magic he got it open and pulled out the page inside. It was a short letter, not what he was expecting.
'Dear Law Jensen,
It has come to our attention that you have 'flunked' out of M.P.A.. There are some things you need to know. Meet me next to the fountain that's located near your home, by twelve P.M.. Sharp.
~T'
Jensen had stopped walking along the sidewalk altogether after reading the letter. At first it had seemed so formal, as if it would have been some sort of agency. But as he read the second sentence, he was caught off guard. The unicorn didn't expect the sudden change in writing style, for the letter was hoof written, not typed up as most of the mail he usually gets is. After collecting his thoughts, he remembered the letter. It had said to meet 'T' as twelve P.M., but what time was it now? He trotted to the nearest pony he could find and tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.
"Yes? Can I help you?" Said the chestnut-colored pegasus, looking up from the newspaper he was holding with his wings. On the front cover there was a headline stating, "LOCAL FOAL GOES MISSING," and the rest was covered by the pony's wing.
"Excuse me, but do you happen to have the current time?" The pegasus looked at Jensen for a moment before lifting his hoof up to look at his fancy Rolex. The unicorn couldn't see it from where he was standing.
"Ah yes, it's a quarter until twelve. Wh-" The pegasus was interrupted as Jensen galloped off down the street without saying a word to the older pony. "Foals these days." He looked back down at his newspaper and continued to read the article about the Wonderbolts.
Meanwhile, Jensen was trying to get to his apartment as quick as he could. It wasn't long before he could see it. Next to it there was a small park, in the center of it was a decorative fountain. As he drew closer to the park, he could make out a pony standing near the aforementioned fountain. It wasn't long before he had reached the spot where the mare was. It was the same unicorn from the post office.
The mare had heard the clacking of Jensen's hooves against the sidewalk as he trotted up to her. She turned around from facing the fountain, and used her magic to take her shades off to look the other unicorn in the eyes. "Hello, I'm Twilight. Twilight Sparkle, but you can just call me T."
Chapter 2: Do You Serve Coffee Here?
The mare in front of Jensen showed a small smile for a split second before starting to look serious. "Mr. Jensen, why do you think you failed out of Manehattan's Police Academy?" She's asked the male unicorn slowly.
Jensen had been slightly caught off guard. For one, he didn't expect the mare to become serious within a short amount of time. As well as he never really considered why he didn't make it through the M.P.A.. "Well...Er...Because I wasn't 'good' enough to become a cop?" He looked at the lavender unicorn questioningly.
"Precisely!" This earned a new look of dismay from Jensen to her. "Well, not exactly that. It was because you were fit to do something else." Twilight paused to look at Jensen's flank, finding that he didn't have a Cutie Mark. "You see, you still have a chance to be something else. Did you ever think you weren't destined to be a police-pony?" The small smile returned to the mare's face, and stuck this time.
"Well uh...No, not really. It had always seemed the way to go. I am physically and mentally strong enough to be even the lowest of officers...What are you playing at here?" The unicorn asked the more feminine pony. He had an odd sense of nervousness taking over his body, yet he had no clue why. Twilight's smile grew slightly larger.
She simply said, "Come with me," before taking off towards the street. Jensen, at first, just watched the mare walk away, considering his options. 'Well. She seems nice enough, what do I have to fear? Also...she is kind of cute...' He shook that last thought out of his head before hurrying to catch up to Twilight. Using her magic, she pulled out what looked to be a simple button on a box out of her pocket and then placed it onto the ground. With one swift movement of her hoof, she pressed the button and backed up. The box started to morph, slowly growing in size. It quickly transformed from a medium sized, two-seat car.
"Wow." Was all that Jensen could say. It was the first time he'd seen anything like it. With a swish of her tail, Twilight walked around to the driver side door and got inside.
"Are you getting in?" The mare said, looking at the blue unicorn, who was still gawking at the sleek black car in front of him.
"Oh...Yes. I will, Twilight." He said as he snapped out of his trance and got into the passenger seat. The chair was quite comfortable, made of a material he couldn't name.
"T."
"Right. T." He looked at the mare for a second before turning to look out through the windshield. Jensen was surprised to see that they were already moving, and quite fast at that. The stallion couldn't recall T issuing any commands to the rune. All manufactured cars operated the same, the only difference being the aesthetics. "Uh...Did you tell the car to go to a destination? And where are we going anyways?"
"You could say that." Twilight winked at Jensen. "We're heading to the Empire State Building. Ever been there? I used to love it as a foal."
"Yes, I have, but why are we going there?" The unicorn looked at her questioningly.
"You'll see." And not another word was said in the car. The mare used her magic to grab her shades out of her suit pocket. They were enveloped with violet magic, the same color as her eyes before they were hidden behind the tinted glass. They arrived the skyscraper shortly. "Follow me." She said once again before exiting the car and walking towards the tall building. Jensen did the same. As they entered, the stallion took notice of the amount of people that were waiting in line to get inside the elevator that lead to the top. T walked straight up to the reception desk and simply nodded at the mare behind it. The receptionist rushed over to the elevator and pushed all of the ponies inside out back into the line.
"After you, Ma'am." The orange earth-pony said quickly. She had a sort of "cowboy" accent, as if she grew up on a farm. T walked into the elevator, beckoning Jensen to follow her, without acknowledging the receptionist again. After they had both entered the elevator, Twilight hit a button on the small console and the doors closed, shutting out the yells of "How come they get to go alone?!" and "Those bloody parasprites!". A bright blue light feeding in from the cracks of the elevator door before they started to head down. The blue unicorn sighed and looked up at the meter that told you what floor you were on at the top of the elevator.
"Are...are we going down?!" The meter showed '-8' when he looked, implying there were eight stories down, and it kept on going lower. For all he knew, the elevator only went up to the top of the skyscraper, and nowhere in between.
"Yes, we are. What, did you think we were go-" She caught herself in time, realizing that this was all new to Jensen. The mare bit her lip and pretended to study the elevator. The elevator stopped, and as the male unicorn noticed, they were already at floor '-30'. The doors opened and they walked out onto a balcony. This balcony overlooked a huge, sleek silver, room. Ponies were everywhere, carrying files, typing at what looked to be computers, but there were no keyboards, only floating blue holograms. There were also...other things. Monstrosities that seemed to come out of fairy-tales or sci-fi movies, and before the stallion could take a better look at them, a visor that reflected his face shut over the balcony. The "balcony" then proceeded to move to the right, slowly picking up speed.
"Where are we? What were those things?" Jensen asked Twilight.
"We're at the PiB headquarters. Those 'things' you saw earlier were aliens. We're an organization which watches aliens and keeps them in check in Equestria."
"What."
"Yep." T giggled for a few seconds. She quickly returned to her reserved persona. "I am serious, though. You were brought here to be recruited into our ranks."
"Give me proof, of these so-called aliens." Jensen was really skeptical, even though had seen something in the lobby earlier.
"Okay. Want some coffee?"
"Uh...sure..." Twilight waved her hoof in front of the reflective glass and a holo-keyboard showed up. She typed in 'B73' and the keyboard disappeared. "What was that?" She just smiled at him, and the moving platform came to a stop. The mare took off through the exit, with the male in tow. They walked in silence, until they reached a door that said 'Breakroom 257'. 'Why is she taking me for coffee?' T opened the door with her magic and walked on through. Jensen hurried to match her pace, and found the oddest sight he had ever seen inside. In the corner table sat two anthropomorphic aliens. One had a head not dissimilar to that of a Blue-jay, with wings where it's arms would be. The other had a large head with one eye on it, with hands for feet and feet for hands. Looking through a fridge was a dog-like thing with mandibles on it's head and four bug eyes.
"I'm gonna need that coffee right about now."
