Turning Conversations Around and First Lesson

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Warning, this chapter has Rainbow Dash trying to explain how wings work. I'm not sure how I did.

Dash thought quickly. "You bucking idiot. Try to change the conversation." Her face immediately lights up. She smiles. "Hey, Scootaloo, do you want me to teach you how to fly?" she asks, hoping the young filly would forget about the conversation.

"Really? You'd teach me to fly? Oh, thankyouthankyouthankyou!" Scootaloo yells, jumping out of the bed and hugging Rainbow Dash tightly. Too tight, in fact.

"You're... You're crushing me..." she says, her ribs starting to ache. Scootaloo loosens her grip and chuckles nervously.

"S-sorry, Rainbow. So," she says, releasing her idol, "When do we start?"

Dash cracks her back, and thinks for a moment. "I'll take you to ground level, and we can start there. Wing control." she says. As if on cue, her wings unfurl one at a time, showing off her wingspan of 6 feet. Scootaloo watches in awe. "Without wing control, you can't fly. Same thing with fuel... Wait here." She folds her wings in. She walks into her kitchen, and grabs some sandwiches, two glasses, and a bottle of cotton candy soda. "Shouldn't keep that next to the dandelion wine..." she thinks to herself. She wraps the food and bottle in a cloth, and walks back into the living room with it hanging from her mouth. "Get on my back." she mumbles through the cloth. Scootaloo obliges, and she flys them to ground level.

Dash sets the cloth down. Scootaloo smiles. It is late into the afternoon, and the sun is low in the sky.  A beautiful day. "Dash, how did you become so good at flying?" she asks, sitting on her haunches.

"I already told you the story about the sonic rainboom, what more do you want to know?" Dash answers. She takes out the glasses and pours both her and Scootaloo a drink. She walks over to the filly and sits next to her.

"Well..." Scootaloo starts, "How can you fly so fast?"

"Angle and velocity. Next question." Dash quickly replies. Scootaloo giggles.

"Okay, hotshot, how do I control my wings?" Scootaloo asks. She could unfurl them simultaneously, but not one at a time, and what little flapping she could do was lackluster.

Dash smiles. "You ever notice how in situations of extreme emotion, they unfurl automatically?" Scootaloo nods. "That's part of our instinct to either fly or act. Like if we are attacked," she says, turning towards the filly menacingly. She pounces at the filly, stopping only an inch in front of her. Her wings explode outward. A trickle of sweat goes down her face. Dash smiles. "Well, you got your instincts up and running, it seems." she says with a chuckle.

Scootaloo frowns. "You... You wanted to see if my wings could move at all?" she asks, a veil of disappointment obvious. Her wings fold back inward.

"Yes and no. I wanted to make sure your instincts worked. Have you ever noticed that during an event that some may consider... Sexy..." Dash says, hesitating on the last word, "That your wings extend?"

"Yes?" Scootaloo says, unsure of what she's about to be taught.

Dash sees Scootaloo's face and chuckles. "Oh, don't worry. I'm not going to talk about THAT. Anyway, this is caused by a rush of blood flow caused by our hearts beating faster. Same thing with our instincts. However," she continues, flapping her wings slightly so as to hover above the ground, "You must learn to control these instincts to a degree. Try to only extend your right wing."

Scootaloo sighs. She tries to extend her wing, but instead extends both. Dash frowns. "Well, looks like I got some work to do." she says with a sigh.

Two hours later...

"Okay..." Dash says, somewhat annoyed at the amount of time it took to teach the young filly. "Try it again."

Scootaloo smiles. She knows that this will be the time she finally completes the lesson. She extends her right wing, then her left. She shows just as much flourish as Rainbow Dash did. She laughs with excitement. "Dash, I did it!" she says, grinning. She folds her wings back into place one at a time.

Dash claps her hooves together. "Well done, kid. Well done. Now, then, let's eat."

Scootaloo smiles. They walk over to the small tablecloth and start to eat their lunch. Afterwards, they lie down on the cloth and stare up at the clouds. Scootaloo asks, "Dash, do you have any siblings?"

Dash is startled by the question. She never talked about family in front of anypony. But, of course, she could make an exception for the young pupil. "Kinda. Fluttershy and I are close enough to be considered sisters, but we're not related... I did have a sister, but she left home shortly after I was born. She feared that I would take away all of the attention she was getting from our parents." Dash sighs. Scootaloo yawns. Dash looks over at her with a sly grin on her face. "You tired, squirt?" she asks, knowing it will annoy the young filly.

"Yes..." Scootaloo answers, too tired to be annoyed. She lays her head on Dash's stomach. Dash looks at her in surprise as she starts drifting off to sleep.

Dash smiles. "Good night, CGH." It was only two in the afternoon, but she didn't care. She was happy to be with the only pony on the planet who loved her for her. She was content. She starts to drift off. It had been a long day. She falls asleep, and begins to dream...
