Journey Of the Undead
Chapter 2: Blood Wood Forests discovered
Previous ChapterPain, That's all any of the undead felt as they covered their eyes blocking out the sun with whatever they could. Devar had pulled on a old silver crown similar in design to the fire keepers. Though the silver was slightly tarnished from time makeing some parts purple, a small crack on it allowing him to see a small amount without being blinded by the sun. As it turns out being underground for who knows how long tends to make your eyes painfully vulnerable to sunlight. Leaving the party of undead practicly helpless as the ponys driving the Lizard drawn carts to their intended destination while the undead tryed to get used to the suns light trying burn their eyes to dust.
"Sorry if we cant do much at the moment, i don't think we expected the sun to try and kill our eyes" Devar stated rubbing under the silver crown letting out a groan as he sat behind Twilight and Thorax at the lead cart.
"That's fine, its to be expected when traveling through darkness for a unknown amount of time, your eyes adjusting to intense darkness and all that." Stated Twilight as she lightly pat his shoulder giving a friendly smile he could barely see.
"Well what kind of place is your home? equestria was it?" He asked once the mild burning sensations in his eyes faded somewhat, the fire keeper exhausted from healing many of the changelings was asleep with a pillow over her head to muffle the noise around her and block out the light.
"It's mostly a calm peaceful land surrounded by numerous nations that aren't as peaceful, making equestria a welcome refuge for those seeking a more peaceful life. But that doesn't make ALL of equestria peaceful, such as this Forrest we're in, most places are usually peaceful enough that Thorax and i could travel on our own without any major problems. But this forest got its name the Blood Wood forest for two reasons, One being the beautiful Redwood trees that grow towering almost as tall as mountains and thicker than as most as nine houses placed in three rows of three or four houses in two rows of two. but the other reason is the large number of Dire Wolves and dozens of prides of mantacores in small areas, which is why we had 20 royal guards with us, to keep them away." twilight gave a deep inhale, somehow managing to say everything in a single breath, which surprised Devar, though thorax chuckled lightly.
After thinking for a while Devar asked her something about one of the two Creatures she spoke of. "I am Curious twilight, what are these Dire Wolves like? They sound somewhat like the Great Wolves of our homelands." he looked around through the crack in his silver eye covering crown.
"Well they're usually Somewhat small when regarding them, the smallest are the pups, and they tend to be 2 maybe even 3 times the size of your average pony, but they grow quickly to about the size of a manticore, or about 2 times the size of your Lizards pulling the carts. The biggest anyone had ever manage to record was the size of a house, they're believed to be biologically immortal and continue to grow though their life, though they would need to Eat a very large amount of food to grow bigger and bigger, eventually growing to the point that they couldn't eat enough to grow very quickly. There was actually a legend of a Dire Wolf that lived near the cave we found you in. The legend Says that it was As large as several houses, with a hide so thick nothing could pierce it, and jaws so powerful even a dragon couldn't compare, and no hydra or mantacore could compete in strength. That one day it fought a hoard of Elder Dragons for Days defending a Small town that prevented hunters from killing the main prey source of the wolves and offered a safe home, and after a week of endless fighting, it killed the last of the Dragons. some think it killed dozens of dragons, some say hundreds or even thousands of dragons. But its wounds were so great that the villagers were celebrated for all of Five Minutes when it collapsed dead. The villagers Tried to tend its wounds any way they could think of, but it eventually passed on. And in reverence to the great wolf they created a statue for every Dragon that it killed on that day, each statue being so lifelike that any dragon who came near them would think the Wolf's Pack members to be as large as it, and that they all stood watch over the village, causing the dragons to flee at the sight of the statues." twilight spoke Adamantly of the wolves and a famous legend of them, here eyes tearing up a bit at the story as she imagined what a noble beast would be like in modern equestria. "Sorry if i was Droning on, I'm somewhat of a teacher at heart."
Devar Chuckled lightly scratching twilight's ear, causing her to squeak in surprise before relaxing. "Its alright twilight, there was a Great Wolf somewhat like that from our home, though no were near as big, her master always said He were a pup even when He died, The Wolfs Name was "Sif, The Great Grey wolf" and was a loyal and caring companion for His master a god knight who became known as Artorias The Abyss Walker, or Wolf Knight Artorias. I personally would like to have one of these wolves as a companion, it would be nice." he lightly sighed at the though, continuing to scratch twilight's ear, while thorax looked a bit jealous of the attention, resulting in having his own ear scratched making him let out a buzz as he relaxed, twilight was curious of this Artorias though decided to ask later in hopes of getting drawings of what he spoke of so she could write a book of these newcomers.
"Can these statues be found or is it just a legend? if they can be i would love to see them." Devar inquired somewhat hopeful.
"they can be found, though Archaeologists say that many were lost to time, and the remains of the village were never found. I personally believe that there was a circle of the statues, we just need to find them all to find the village as there have been pieces of what looked like a map on the back of them that was magically enchanted to never erode or Chip, so they are as flawless as when they were made." She stated as she took the reins from Thorax and turned the Cart Line in a different direction Devar couldn't tell due to his current near blindness. "the Statues arent verry far away from here, as the cave you were in was the Wolfs Home."
"Did no one ever Name the Wolf? or is that its name "The Wolf"" Devar chuckled lightly continuing to scratch Thorax and Twilights ears.
"I believe the wolf was named Fenrir, or maybe it was Fenris? I'm not entirely sure, it was one of the two i know that much." Twilight stated, a hoof on her chin in thought.
The line of Pony and Undead filled carts Traveled on, Twilight was playing with one of the Young Crystal Lizards that decided to ride on the cart. Thorax was looking around for signs of the statues, When Eventually they saw them, Gigantic Mountains of stone carved in the shape of Enormous wolves.
"Wow, those are Huge, And you said Ponies carved them?" Asked a Bewildered Devar.
"As far as my study's have gone, Yes" Confirmed twilight with a nod.
Devar Hopped off the cart to examine the statue, it was nearly 10 stories tall, and if twilight was right that these were Life sized of the wolf they were modeled off of, then he could imagine it could easily fight even the ancient dragons From his home.
They began to search for the next statue and once they found it Devar noticed a small change, a certain runic symbol was different from the last statue. When he pointed this out to twilight her eyes grew almost triple in size as she began examining all her detailed drawings of every statue. Immediately she began using her Encyclopedia of everything that was her brain and began to look for translations until she remembered the ancient runic language of the dragons and when she translated it her heart sank.
"I, I cant belive it, the runes are of the dragons of olden times, but they don't tell the location of the village, they tell of its fate." "Through fire and claw we saw, through night and day we stayed, when the howling ended and the roaring stopped many had forgot, safety was gone and so we moved on, to find a new home we began to roam, ever thankful of our guardian we hopped to see him again."
they sat and stewed this information for a short time before deciding to continue their journey to Canterlot and once loaded onto the carts again they set off.
