The Lantern's Light
The Ring
Load Full StoryEmotions.
It is what makes each living individual unique. There exists a ton of emotions in the universe. But there is a way to use it for these emotions to be weaponized.
For spread throughout the universe are various corps based upon the spectrum of emotions. Will. Hope. Love. Greed. Compassion. Rage. Fear. Even the ideals and beliefs of life and death itself. Each representing a different color.
Green for Will. Blue for Hope. Pink for Love. Indigo for Compassion. Red for Rage. Orange for Greed. Yellow for Fear. White for Life. Black for Death. These colors are weaponized as Lanterns. The most prominent of these corps are the Green Lantern Corps.
The Green Lantern Corps protect various sectors across the universe. But as well-known as the Green Lanterns are, there are the other corps who use their own emotions for their own purposes beyond protecting the known universe. Not all are supposedly judicial like the Green Lanterns themselves.
Lanterns such as the Sinestro Corps, who feed upon the yellow emotion of Fear. And the Red Lanterns, who are fueled by rage and vengeance and have no known alligence, have no desire for one single alliiance and choose to govern matters in their own way.
But with these Corps came many wars and conflicts. The Sinestro Corps war, the War of the Lanterns. Even when Nekron invaded and used the power of the Black Lanterns. These emotions can also be used as weapons, deadly and powerful. All throughout the universe the spectrum exists, but even some sectors and areas among the vast cosmos have yet to be exposed to the many Lanterns and their power.
There exists a sector unknown to the Green Lanterns. Even to the Guardians of Oa. Formerly unknown, but somewhat close to Sector 2814 in Frontier Space, the designated sector of the Green Lanterns of Earth: Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, who are known heroes among the Corps and even members of the Justice League. But it exists in an area they have yet to patrol deep wthin Frontier Space.
A green streak flew across the cosmos, a lone ring flew through the reaches of outer space. A Green Lantern ring. No doubt one from a fallen Lantern from a battle.
The streak entered beyond Frontier Space and finally arrived in the atmosphere of a single planet.
Equus.
Equestria was a calm planet, the nation ruled by two alicorn sosters. But they were unused to extra-terrestrial activity. The heroes, the former Elements of Harmony who resided in Ponyville, had protected it for years now. The land of Equines had been usually calm, minus the occassional threat.
But the ring flew on by Ponyville. For its next user was not there.
It travelled far and wide, reaching beyond a snow-filled region and even breaking itself through a dome, erecting a green barrier within itself to reach where it wanted. A lone green streak hovered along the calm night sky.
Shining Armor sighed in content, wrapping the covers over his body. Cadance had a few more important diplomatic matters to tie up, and he had just got done putting his daughter, Flurry Heart, to sleep after so many futile attempts. His eyes were baggy and his blue mane was a little messy.
But in the end, no matter how weird things can get, especially with an alicorn daughter, Shining knew that he was lucky. He rose to become captain of the Royal Guard, married the Princess of Love and had a beautiful daughter, and was related to one of the greatest heroes in the land, his sister Twilight Sparkle. He blinked, staring at the ceiling, a growing smile on his face.
Shining Armor tossed around, his small migraine finally leaving his head. He spent the whole day filling out papers, checking andtraining the guards and being a husband and father. Every now and then, he thought to be draining, but moments in peace reminded him of what he truly had and he was forever grateful.
Cadance had to speak with Princess Celestia and Luna, over ehat? He was unsure of.
But Shining was ready to fall asleep at this point. His body a little sore and his eyelids heavy. He was ready to snore. But something green flew through his window, which he left open to allow the cool night breeze into his room.
But a green light came into his closed vision. Slowly opening his eyes, Shining Armor saw a floating green ring.
"Um..." muttered the white unicorn.
The ring flew on the unicorn's horn as the stallion sat up, seeing a green aura surround him.
'Shining Armor of Planet Equus. You have the power to overcome great fear...'
The unicorn blinked, suddenly feeling himself be removed from the comfort of his bed. "Wha-Huh?" he blurted out, flailing his hooves around in confusion. He wondered where the voice was coming from, noticing the source was coming from his horn.
'...Welcome to the Green Lantern Corps.'
Wondering what was happening, Shining Armor suddenly propped back on the bed, rubbing his now sore flank as the bed creaked slightly. "Ow... What the hay was that?" he wondered quietly, rubbing his horn, feeling the ring.
"...And why do I feel something on my face?"
Now awake, Shining Armor stepped off his bed and looked at the mirror in his room. Using his magic, he created a small light that allowed him to see easier. Looking in his reflection, he saw that something was indeed off about him with the ring on his horn.
For one, he wore a tight green and black spandex suit. On his chest was a symbol, a circle with two lines on both ends. Over his eyes was a domino mask. "Okay... What the heck is going on?" he finally asked, tapping his horn.
'You are chosen to be a member of the Green Lanterns Corps.' the rin answered.
The unicorn gave a deadpan stare, "Right... You can talk. Okay, I'll bite. What are Green Lanterns. Or am I in some kind of fever dream?" he wondered.
'The Green Lantern Corps are the known proectors of the universe. They are designated in sectors and trained on Planet Oa. But those chosen in Frontier Space have their ring train them.'
"Alright then was I chosen?"
The ring answered, 'Because you have the power to overcome great fear. A Green Lantern represents the emotion of Will. Anything you can will, can become a green construct from the ring.'
"That's odd... Okay, what are constructs then? You gotta fill me in on the details here."
'Constructs are objects made of hard-light created from the ring. Your only limit is your will, and the energy within your ring.' the ring elaborated for the dumbfounded unicorn.
"Then is there anyway to recharge it or something?"
Suddenly, a small green light appeared. And once it dimmed, revealed a green lantern. "Okay, I get the name." he admitted, "So, I just put my horn in here and then it recharges?"
'Yes, but you do not need to right now, but you will need to say the oath to supercharge the battery. There is still plenty of energy left.' the ring added. 'The oath will be told to you soon.' at that, the lantern vanished, hidden away in a pocket dimension.
"Anything else?" asked Shining Armor.
'Try to create a construct.' the ring ordered. 'Focus your will in order to create something from your mind.'
Shining pursed his lips, "Um, alright then, I guess." he closed his eyes and focused, feeling an unknown energy overtake his own magic for the moment. A green streak of light formed over his head and then something was seen on the ground.
A glowing green crib that rocked and he let out a quiet chuckle upon seeing what he made. "Huh, I guess I got Flurry on the mind then. So much for being tired."
'It takes practice to master constructs, Lantern Armor. As a Lantern, you will grow stronger with your mind. Since you are in Frontier Space, going to Oa is not required, but if you wish, perhaps training with a fellow Green Lantern would aid you easier.'
Shining chuckled, "And leave my family? No thanks. I got other things to take care of. Maybe when things clear up, I'll take a visit to meet these other Green Lanterns. Any idea as to why a ring came down here anyhow?"
'A Lantern's ring is removed by death. When a Green Lantern falls, their ring is taken and brought to choose another wielder. You were chosen, Shining Armor.'
"Oh, I'm sorry." apologized the unicorn. "Can we move on? Like, can I give the ring to someone else?"
'No. You have already chosen to wield it. Unless they too are chosen, only you can wear the ring.' the ring replied.
Shining Armor nodded and sighed, "So much for that. Can I not be a Green Lantern? This all sounds rather difficult to live up to."
'Do not worry, Lantern Armor. Many Lanterns think the same upon receiving the ring. It takes training and dedication. With more practice, you will be a better Lantern.'
Shining hummed, "Training and dedication? Already did enough of that."
'Very well, Lantern Armor. Perhaps we should practice flight now.' the ring suggested.
Shining tilted his head, "Flight? But I don't have wings."
The ring continued, 'Wings are not necessary with the ring. Again, will the ring for flight. Focus.'
Closing his eyes for a moment, Shining felt the ring take control. When he opened his eyes, he saw a green light surround his body. The unicorn felt himself weightless as he moved above the ground. "Woah! Okay, that's something!"
The stallion turned his head, "Okay. Now whhaaaaaaaaa--!" he sped off out the window.
"Aaaaahhh!" Shining nearly screamed, flying over his garden at an alarming speed.
The stallion turned, the green streak behind him moving in his every direction with him. "This... Is actually pretty cool! Woo!" he cheered, extending his hooves outwards like a superhero would fly. The unicorn focused himself and was now better able to control his flight. He looked down, seeing the Crystal Empire from above.
"Huh. I could actually get used to this."
That moment didn't last long, as when he raised his head, he was heading directly towards a castle wall. "Oh crud!" he screamed, unable to change his flight direction with how fast he was moving.
Cadance sighed, sitting on her throne. Celestia and Luna had left sometime ago and the Princess of Love was sitting down, drinking the last of her tea. She hummed lightly, "Perhaps I'll head to bed soon, Shiny must be wondering how the meeting's gone." she said to herself, debating on what to do.
"Maybe I should get something to eat. Diplomatic relations is quite exhausting." Cadance lightly chuckled to herself, finally standing on her hooves. The guards were outside, leaving her for a moment to herself without being overly watched.
Before the princess could do anything else, however, the sound of crystals shattering surprised her, causing the alicorn to yelp as fragments of crystals fell from the sky.
"Woah!"
A thud. Cadance used her magic to protect herself from the crystal fragments. When she looked down, she saw her husband, stunned and lying on the ground. Shining's green suit faded away as he shook his aching head.
When he looked up, Shining saw Cadance, a stern look of unamusement and worry on her face. Upon seeing that, he smiled sheepishly.
"Hi, honey. Um, I'm alright?" he didn't know what to say. "Oh, uh, I mean, are you okay?" he asked awkwardly.
Cadance tilted her head, now wondering what Shining was up to. Perhaps an explanation was in order.
