Long ago, in the not-so-magical land of England, a man who at the time went by the name of Merlin met two Alicorn sisters travelling across universes, and befriended them, especially the elder sister, Celestia. Through the long years, they kept up correspondence through a pair of linked magical books. Millennia later, that man was known only by his title, the Emperor of Mankind. Through his friendship with Celestia, he kept a better grip on what it meant to be human than he otherwise would have, and his Great Crusade to recover his genetically-engineered sons, the Primarchs, went better than it could have.

Now, his quest is complete and has recovered them all, and is beset by a conundrum: his eighteen remaining sons (well, nineteen, but acknowledging that would spoil the secrets of two of them to the others) have developed potentially disastrous rivalries, and some of them weren't that stable when he found them. He is ready to begin his next great work, but leaving them to their own devices as they currently are could cause problems for the Imperium he has worked hard to build.

And so, he asks a favor of his old friend Celestia... The services of her protege, Twilight Sparkle, Princess of Friendship, and her friends, to help build stronger bonds between the Primarchs as a buttress against the forces of Chaos.
