Moving To Ponyville

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

I nodded in understanding, "Alright, on the bright side, I at least have a choice to pick right?"

"That's the spirit, now where would you like to go?" Petunia asked.

I held my chin and looked at the photo's, "Hmmm...." I point to the Ponyville photo, "Ponyville looks like a quiet town just from the picture itself. I lived in big towns before and I just got bored of them over time, it would be a nice change."

Twilight clapped her hooves together with a quiet squee of excitement, "This is perfect! You could live with me until you find a home to settle in."

I look at her with a concerned face, "You sure I won't be a bother?"

She shook her head, "Not at all, I only have two friends and a baby dragon currently; plus I have plenty of guest rooms as well."

Petunia cleared her throat to get my attention, "Well, if that is your choice," She levitated a piece of paper to me, "You'll fill this paper out like you did for the immigration papers and you'll be talking to Mayor Mare about your living accommodations, and what job you're going to get to sustain yourself."

As I analyzed the paper, I filled out the information as best as I could and put it on the desk. Petunia then teleports the paper, "Alright, that went straight to Mayor Mare's mailbox at the town hall."

I nodded as a golden glow flashed on the top of Twilight's horn, "Oh?" She questioned as she levitated it in her grasp and opened it. When she read it her jaw dropped as she passed the letter to my hands, I decided to take a read, despite how cute Twilight's reaction was.

Dear Emerson,

While it has been your second day in Equestria, several Noble's are questioning about what you were. Luna said that if you encounter a snooty Noble, it could lead nothing but trouble. So, as sisters, we decided to appoint you Duke of Earth, a representative of your people. Now I know it's a lot to take in, but this will help you in the long run. If there is anypony with a Noble title giving your grief, just flash this magically protected card signed by myself and Luna. Now with your new title, you'll need a bank account, head over there after you check how the moving situation is, there will be a nice surprise and something to help you get started.

Your new friends,

Celestia and Luna

My eyes widened when I finished the letter as I pulled the card out. I look at it and the card had a gold color with a royal seal of a sun and crescent moon at the back, then the front had my information on it. Emerson, Duke of Earth. I gulped as I sheepishly smiled, "So I guess I am appointed as a Duke..." I scratched the back of my head.

Petunia seemed unphased by the news, but Twilight was still shocked. I got her attention when I closed her jaw for her.

"You're a Duke now!!!!??" Twilight shouts a little.

I shrugged, "I guess, I mean Celestia and Luna are looking out for me in case of any conflicts right?"

Petunia sighed, "Yes, the Noble's, ever since the Festival of Friendship, has been more and more distasteful with the species that have been coming to Equestria, especially Canterlot. While your title will help you out while you're in here, it won't help you in Ponyville unless the Nobles happened to show up around there for a reason."

I nodded in understanding, "Well that clears things up for me, I don't exactly what kind of power that a Duke has at all."

Twilight spoke out, "Well if you want to talk to the Princess's, you can use your title to basically speak to her before anypony else."

"Plus you have the power to ask an officer to help you in a time of need, and you're almost unaffected by anyone accusing you of misdeeds that you have not committed. Depending on the misdeeds, the Princess's are the ones with the final judgment." Petunia explained further.

"So, I have power, but not over the Princess's?" They nodded, "Alright then, that's all I need to know." I put the card in my wallet, "Well I think we'll leave this new title as a secret until there is a need." I said.

Twilight smiled, "Alright Emerson," She turned to Petunia, "We'll be heading out now if there is nothing else that we need to fill out."

The mare in question shook her head, "No, other than saying hi to Mayor Mare for me. We've been friends since college."

I smiled as I nod, "I'll make sure to do that Miss Petunia." Twilight and I got up as we said our goodbyes and walked back out into Canterlot.

Twilight and I headed back to the apartment complex to find pony's packing up my belongings. I was a little concerned about how they were handling my items, but Twilight spoke.

"These ponies were hired by Luna herself, so don't worry about anything getting mistreated or breaking." Twilight informed.

I sighed silently, "Alright, sure."

A pegasus stallion, wearing a black baseball cap and saddlebags, that had a blond mane and a brown coat was holding a clipboard with one wing and a quill with the other. He noticed us and smiled, "So you must be the human that came from the sky?" He chuckled lightly.

"Yes, I have the tendency of falling out of skies, but that's my luck. So, who am I speaking with?" I wondered.

He had a hearty laugh, "A funny guy here huh? I like you already, the names Crafty Crate." He put his quill to the clipboard as he offered his hoof for a bump, to which I complied, "The boys and I have packed everything inside the unstable room you had. Now a friend of mine is coming to look at the architecture of your room, then another friend is going to destroy and rebuild it back to what it was before."

I nodded as Twilight stepped forward, "I have a destination for you to where his belongings will go."

Crafty pulled his Quill out again, "Go on?"

"Please deliver this to my castle in Ponyville, I'll inform my assistant that you're coming and he'll open up the door for you. Just put them in the royal courtroom, my friends and I will take care of the rest." Twilight informed him as he wrote down the details.

The stallion smiled, "Alright, the packages should be coming to your castle this afternoon."

"Sounds good to me, right Emerson?" Twilight smiled.

I smile back, "Yep."

"May I have a piece of paper, quill, and inkwell?" she asked Crafty.

He passed Twilight an extra quill and parchment from his saddlebag, "The Inkwell is on the truck, now if you'll excuse me, I have to over watch my employee's." We nod as he went back inside the apartment complex.

Twilight quickly went to the inkwell and wrote a letter, probably to Spike and her friends, and sent it off with her magic. "With that out of the way, let's head to the bank and then to the castle where we head to Ponyville by Chariot."

"I thought that Canterlot and Ponyville were connected by a rail?" I said as we walked down the street.

The mare ruffled her wings a bit, "Yes, but it takes a good two hours to get from here to there, going by Chariot only takes 30 minutes to get there."

"Is there a fast bullet train here in Equestria?" I raised an eyebrow.

Twilight giggled, "No, we'll be flying via Chariot."

"Oh... Like a rollercoaster?"

She smirked, "You could say that."

When Twilight and I went out of the bank, my eyes were still wide from the number of Bits that I had deposited from the Princesses. In my hand, was 50 platinum Bits in a bag, 1 platinum Bit equals 50 gold Bits, which I had 2,500 Bits in this bag altogether. A house in Ponyville is only around 500-900 gold Bits, so I had enough to last me for awhile.

"So...." Twilight's ears swivel to my direction, "Celestia herself gave me 5,000 gold Bits for compensation for being a Duke of Earth and getting a 200 gold Bit stipend once a month from the Royal Bank."

Twilight sighed, "Yep." She turned her head to face me, "It certainly sets you up to look for a job and to get a house."

"You sound like you're trying to grasp why I suddenly gained a Duke status," I said noticing the tone of her voice.

Her ears went flat for a second, "Well, I understand why, but I'm just trying to take in this information in small bites. I mean, you're not reacting like a pony would when they gain a Royal status or earned a small fortune." She tilted her head, "Are all humans like this when they are given things like this."

I laughed lightly, "No no Twilight, most humans would just run around and act like they won a million dollars or use their status to get anything they want. There are some humans, like myself, would not know what to do with their money and power. How could I?" We passed the gates of Canterlot Castle as I spoke, "I've been in a family that had bad luck and if we earned anything that would improve our lives, it's immediately taken away from us. After dealing with that on a daily basis, my family, what's left of them, and I have become emotionless when it comes to surprises."

Twilight was silent as we walked down the courtyard and into the area were the Chariots were. There was a bus or Chariot stop sign and a bench that she hopped on to sat a seat as she pats her hoof on the empty spot. I sat next to her as we waited for what I guess is our ride to Ponyville.

"That is a unique experience Emerson, so all your life you've been unlucky to the point where you just accepted it?" I nodded as she continued, "Well, I'm sure that you're bad luck is going to change then. I mean we didn't run into any Nobles along the way back to the Castle and the bits you have, they're not going anywhere." She put her hoof on my hand, "As a friend, Emerson, I will help you in any way to let you be happy. So if anything bad happens, you let me know and I'll try to help out." She giggled as she pulled her hoof away, "If anything I'm sure my friends will help you make your day a little brighter with little surprises along the way."

"You mean your friends that showed up at my room?" I asked.

She nodded, "The very same."

I gave the purple Alicorn a light smile, "That's certainly something to look forward to."

A Chariot pulled up with two Pegasus Royal Guards harnessed at the front. Twilight hopped off the bench and got on the bench, "Coming?"

"S-Sure," I said as I followed and took a seat next to her. "This Chariot will take us to Ponyville?"

Twilight smiled, "Yep," She turned to the guards, "To the Friendship castle please." Both nodded as their wings extend out as they sprint, making my body shoot back against the seat. Their wings began to flap and the Chariot began to gain air? Both of my hands tighten the only handle to my left as we went past a cliff. I closed my eyes as I thought we were going to fall...

...

...

My eyes open as we still stayed level in the air. I gulped as I looked over the edge of the Chariot. Below was the ground while I was in 1000+ feet in the air. I turned to Twilight who was enjoying the view with a smug smirk.

"Y-You didn't tell me that this Chariot was going to be in the air." I stuttered as I felt the warmth of my blood come back to my face.

Twilight giggled, "I did say I wanted to give you little surprises along the way, and I enjoyed your reaction."

I chuckled, "Alright, you got me, but make sure it's nothing dealing with...." I look over the bar and flinched, "...Heights."

She nodded, "We're not going to take Chariots every time, they're only available via Canterlot and they're a one-way ticket."

I sighed as I lean back and looked at the scenery, "If anything else, it's a nice view at least." From the way I was high up, I saw Ponyville in the distance as I saw a purple colored castle. It's probably Twilight's Castle and to the left was a vast deep forest meshing with an apple orchard and a barn.

"We're about to land Princess." One of the guards in front said as we began to descend.

It wasn't a graceful descending mind you, it was definitely a steep rollercoaster down towards the grass. Twilight was shouting with glee, "Weeee!!!" I have been through rollercoasters before, but this coaster without a rail was making me scream with Twilight as we went down. Then after about 20 seconds of descending we slow down and stop at the ground.

"We're here," Twilight said getting off.

"Where?" I was still shaking from the falling sensation.

"Here. A small step for ponykind, but a giant step for us. All ashore!"

"Get me off this Chariot!" I said scrambling to get out as Twilight and the guards were snickering, "Ha, ha, very funny guys," I say as I get up and check my pants. Nope, still dry. I guess I didn't wet myself.

Twilight turned to the guards to say her thanks and goodbyes as both guards flew back up into the sky towards Canterlot. I joined her as we walked to the large castle and the big doors, with Twilight's magic, opened wide for us to enter.

"Nice to see you return Twilight." Said a voice.

I look down to see a small green scaly lizard walking towards Twilight and gives her a hug. I guess this is the baby dragon that's Twilight's assistant. Behind him were two more unicorns. The one in the forefront is a unicorn with a purple mane with an aquamarine streak and has a light heliotrope coat. The one behind her is a unicorn wearing dark purple armor with rose color mane and a dark orchid coat, her horn seemed chipped and broken plus she had a scar that is on her right eye. I looked at it for a few more seconds as Twilight spoke up.

"Emerson, this is Spike," She points to the heliotrope unicorn, "that's Starlight," then to the dark orchid unicorn, "that's Tempest."

I raise an eyebrow, "The Tempest?" I asked in a certain tone.

The unicorn in question spoke, "I suppose that the news has no bounds coming around." She walks up to me, "I suppose you're the human that was summoned by the Storm King?"

I nod as I cross my arms, "Yes."

Tempest twiddled her hooves on the crystal ground and is blushing as she sighed, "Why is it so hard to do this?" She took a deep breath, "I know that it was my fault that the Storm King gained so much power, and I apologize. If there is anything-" She stopped when I placed my hand on her shoulder.

She looks up, eyes were shimmering, "You wouldn't have known that he would cast that kind of spell. Don't get yourself down for something that wasn't in your control." she was about to speak, but I continued, "If you still feel this way then I wouldn't mind a few simple favors to pay me back."

Tempest stayed silent for a bit then gave me a small smile, "Sure, I think I can work with that."

I smiled, "Good." I turn to Starlight as Tempest told Twilight that she would return to her post, "Wait you're in Twilight's Royal Guard?"

Twilight nodded, "Since we forgave each other, I hired her to guard and patrol the castle. Last time somepony got in she tried to change the space-time continuum." She looks at Starlight who sheepishly smiles, "So, seeing that Tempest was a commander, I gave her the position of Captain of The Friendship Castle."

Starlight chuckled, "Yeah... I just remembered I have to visit Trixie for some magic tricks." She teleports away as Twilight shook her head.

"Yep, she was embarrassed," Tempest commented, "now if you'll excuse me." She said as she resumed her patrol.

"Only because Twilight had to mention it." Spike crossed his arms and gives Twilight a look.

Twilight scratches the back of her head chuckling slightly, "Right...." She clears her throat, "Anyway, Spike, you've been informed of who's coming and I believe you've informed Tempest as well." He nods, "Great! Emerson and I are going to head to Town Hall to meet with Mayor Mare."

Spike raised an eyebrow, "Um, you forgot that you need something to take care of."

Twilight looks at her assistant then puts her hoof on her forehead, "I forgot... I need to take care of important paperwork to keep this castle a public library."

"Really?" I asked.

"Yep," Spike spoke, "Since our old home was destroyed, Mayor Mare hasn't really established this castle as the new Library. In fact, no pony knows that this part Library, thinking that it's just a palace that only she and her friends can be in. So, while I took care of the minor papers, Twilight needs to review said proposal to make her library as a public one."

I rubbed my chin, "Then who will join me to Town Hall?"

Spike elbowed my shin lightly, "I got you covered, I'll be joining you."

Twilight didn't protest and sighed, "I'm so sorry Emerson, but Spike is right, the paperwork is important for all of Ponyville. So, I'm putting Spike in charge."

He salutes Twilight, "I won't let you down Twilight."

I smiled, "Well, lead the way, Spike."

We said goodbye to Twilight for now and we walked to the Town Hall in Ponyville.

Spike and I finally get to the Town Hall and the one thing that I noticed around Ponyville is that not a lot of ponies were staring. The baby dragon opened the door for me as I walked in. The place was wide open and had two balcony's, I'm guessing that this location is used for celebrations of some sort. The reception desk is to the right of me and I started to walk over there.

Once Spike matched my pace with me, I look down to him, "Question Spike."

He looked up, "Yes?"

"Unlike Canterlot, Ponyville seems to be more.... calm and they're staring less. Did something happen or were they informed I was coming?" I asked as my thought about it.

Spike waved his hand, "That's easy, since the Festival of Friendship, a lot more species came into Equestria, and Ponyville was the first one to get visited. Ponies are now making business with them in the marketplace, so they're used to seeing new types of creatures, but they don't know that you're the only one."

I nodded, "It gives me a little comfort of knowing that I won't be stared at or discriminated when I'm around here."

We got to the desk and there was a mare who had a yellow mane, an orange coat, emerald eyes, and a typewriter cutie mark. She was typing away on her typewriter, but when she saw us two, she smiled.

"I was informed from Twilight that she would be here as well?" The mare asked.

Spike shook his head, "She has to do the Public Library paperwork, so she left me in charge Note Record."

Note nodded, "Understood," She turned to face me, "Mr. Emerson was it?"

"Just Emerson, Note Record," I replied.

"Right, Emerson, Mayor Mare is waiting for you in her office down the hall." Note informed us.

"Do you need me to go with you or would you like me to stay here?" Spike asked.

I shrugged, "I'm sure I'm good from here Spike, maybe you could bring one of your friends here while I'm inside. I didn't leave the best impression on Twilight's friends the first time I met them."

"Sure thing!" He smiled as he rushed out of Town Hall.

I chuckled lightly when he rushed off as I walked toward Mayor Mare's office. I knocked as I heard her say come in. I open the door to the office was smaller than Petunia's, but it definitely had a charm to it. I stood behind the desk as the mare herself was taking care of some papers. She had a pale light amber coat with a light bluish gray with a lighter streak on top and had violet colored eyes.

"Please have a seat, Emerson." She said as she pushed aside her own paperwork to the side.

I did as she told me and I sunk into the cushions a little as she continued, "Now I know you filled out the paperwork in the Immigration center,"

"Which Petunia says hi by the way," I added.

That made her have a small smile, "Thanks, but you have to get a job here in order to sustain yourself. Now the house's here are cheap, but I'm guessing that you're going to stay with Twilight for the time being."

"Yes, she offered me to stay until I find the proper housing," I say.

Mayor Mare nodded, "Of course, well, I happen to have three jobs for you to choose. Since the Festival of Friendship, a lot more species have lowered the unemployment rate of Ponyville, so there are three opportunities left for you and once you pick one, I'm sure the others will be filled in sooner or later."

"Huh, first the housing in different towns now employment rate, it seems that Equestria is booming with immigration, not that I'm complaining though," I say as the Mayor pass's me three sheets of paper.

"Indeed. Now for your opportunities: First is a Traveling Job where some letters or packages have been stuck in the postal service for too long, basically, you'll be taking these sorted packages to different town locations throughout Equestria. While the pay is good, you'll be in Ponyville for a short time before traveling to another town. Second is a Construction job, while you won't be involving yourself with building an actual up-to-code house, you'll be doing most of the labor work. This requires a lot of endurance and communication for your team. Your pay will be more than enough to sustain your lifestyle, but your muscles will be sore due to the amount of work you'll be doing. The last one is an odd job hunter. Ponies are asking others to help them with their odd jobs and while the pay might be questionable, there is just an abundance of them. The only downside really is that you need to take on more odd jobs to be able to get the amount of pay you want." Mayor Mare explained while I looked at the papers.

"It's a lot to take in." I say.

She nodded, "Would you like me to step out for you to think about it?"

I smiled, "Yes, that would be great."

Mayor Mare leaves her desk and closes the door behind her, leaving me alone to my thoughts.

I sighed, "What to choose."
